The Midnight Wars had pitted brother and sister against each other, one loyal to a tyrannical emperor and the other fighting to bring about change and peace. After the battles had ceased over eight centuries in the past, a new pair of leaders rose to power, and the Empire of Zalyndrya enjoyed peace for hundreds of years. Within the Empire, families of Travelers roam the land, residing within its borders, but claiming loyalty to none but their own. When entire families are slaughtered in the dead of night, however, Lalasa and Lothan Konistav, the empress and emperor since the end of the wars, are prompted to take action, and their investigation leads them to the world to which Lalasa had banished her brother all those years ago. Politics is a tricky business no matter what world one calls home, and when the political tides shift on Zalyndrya, Lalasa's decision to spare her brother's life returns to haunt her, causing the turmoil to spill over onto Earth. Her investigation takes them to present-day Philadelphia, where they expect to find her brother, Seth, waiting. Instead, they find a letter with few instructions on how to get by in a world vastly different from their own. As they begin to dig deeper, they are caught in a web of deception and murder, and they soon become targets themselves. Their best chance for finding answers lies with a human accountant, her undead bodyguard, and a personal assistant who is just learning that the things that go bump in the night are real. A too-curious head of security, a vampire hunter seeking revenge, and an opportunistic assassin only add to their troubles as they struggle to figure out who they can trust in this strange world of lights and technology

I guess this could be considered urban fantasy. Whatever it is, it's not a genre I normally read. I met the author at The Dallas Comic Show, and I stood at her table so long, talking about publishing via IngramSpark versus Createspace, that I felt I should buy a copy of her book. My first impression once I picked the book up to read it wasn't favorable. There was no copyright page whatsoever, and the text was not right justified like most books. So reading it was like reading a manuscript.

The writing was good though, better than most self published books. I enjoyed the story and the characters. The idea of vampires both on earth and on another world seemed new to me.

There were a few minor typos, but not many. I know from publishing my own book that getting rid of all typos is a challenge. I did wonder if the character of Rhonda was male in earlier drafts since there were pronouns referring to her as either "he" or "him" in a couple of places.

But overall, the read was an enjoyable one.

I got a free copy of this book from Voracious Readers Only in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this story, though I do like more of a detailed description of the main characters at least, when they first appeared, I had a hard time remembering who was who at the beginning, because those descriptions were missing so I wasn't able to put faces to names, but as the story progressed, little bits of the their appearance was revealed which allowed me to form a picture of the characters in my mind, which in turned made the story more enjoyable to read.

I was a little confused about the gender of Rhonda, because most of the time this character had her/she pronouns but once in awhile they changed to he/him. I just went with it and started thinking of Rhonda as if they were gender-fluid.

I loved the story line, it was very different to anything I've ever read before, and there was so many twists and turns along the way, I couldn't guess what would happen next. I equally loved the characters too, I couldn't pick a favourite, which very rarely happens, I almost always have a favourite.
