Rate this book
On the small island of Blackthorn, known for its forbidding trees that look like exotic, menacing beasts and also a bit like several missing children, Paul Gold, one of two identical twin boys, vanishes. He seemingly visits his younger sister Katie, who isn't certain if her brother's a ghost, or something else. When Katie embarks on her first love affair with a handsome, wealthy boy named Julian Bloomfield, she doesn't realize her mother Victoria suspects Julian had something to do with Paul's disappearance. At the same time Victoria starts to believe she is seeing Paul again here and there on the island. Blackthorn is hiding very sinister secrets that Katie is an unsuspecting part of and Julian is an unsuspecting witness to. Quite a few other islanders are involved and the resolution all comes back to what happened to Paul.

I have to start my review off with a bit of cover love as I absolutely love the cover for this book. The black, red and white with the images, make it eye catching and it’s a book I would have picked up from the cover alone.

The story starts off with the disappearance of Paul who is an identical twin on a trip out to the park. You could feel the fear and emotions as his mother realises he is missing and the days that follow when he still hasn’t been found.

We then see Paul’s family as the years go on in the aftermath. It was interesting to see the relationship, more so with the mother and the other two children and how it affected them all. The story focuses more on Katie the sister. It’s hard to say to much without giving it away but through Katie it gives the story more of a super natural feel.

There is an air of mystery throughout with some of the island’s residents as well as the trees. The author feeds us little snippets, keeping the readers interest piqued and wanting to unearth the islands secrets.

The Tree Beasts is a gentle mystery/suspense novel story a bit of fantasy thrown in for good measure. It will appeal to young adults and adults alike. It didn’t take me long to read as it is a relatively quick read for a novel. It has everything it needs though to make for a good solid read and definitely kept me entertained.

My thanks to the author for a readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

I have to hold my hands up and say that I don't normally read science fiction or fantasy type books as the genre just doesn't usually appeal. However they do say that a change is as good as a rest and as I have read and enjoyed other books by this author, I agreed to give 'The Tree Beasts' a whirl. Oh my word, 'The Tree Beasts' was a fabulous read, which I thoroughly enjoyed but more about that in a bit.
I was pleasantly surprised by just how much I enjoyed 'The Tree Beasts'. As soon as I started to read that was it, I was mesmerised by the story and I found that I just couldn't put the book down. The book isn't particularly long and so it didn't take me long to race through to the end of the story. Whilst reading 'The Tree Beasts', I lost all track of time and when I looked up to check on the time, I thought that I had only been reading for an hour or so but I was staggered to realise that I had actually been reading for more like three hours. Unusually for me, I was able to concentrate on the book throughout. Normally I have the attention span of a gnat and I am easily distracted but not in this case. I was able to focus on the story and on the story alone, shutting out all other distractions.
'The Tree Beasts' is really well written. The author certainly knows how to grab your attention with a synopsis that helps this book to stand out from the crowd. Then once she has your attention, she will not let you have it back until the moment you read the last word on the last page. Not that I would have wanted it back until I had finished the book anyway. I felt as though I was part of the story and that's all thanks to E. R. Fallon's very realistic and vivid descriptions and storytelling.
In short, I did really enjoyed reading 'The Tree Beasts' and I would recommend this book to other readers. I will be reading more of this author's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 4* out of 5*.

Sam and Victoria had three children. Identical twins Nat and Paul and a daughter Katie. When they were small and playing in a park, Paul went missing, never to be seen again. The nanny of another child there, Julian, left the island very shortly afterwards. She said she had called the police but was later found to have been lying. Ten years later Katie is very friendly with Julian and there are the beginnings of a relationship. She isn’t aware that he was there when her brother disappeared. Katie has always felt Paul’s presence and she has a distinctive birthmark similar to that of others on the island but does not yet know of its significance. This is a very different read- it's a mystery with a little fantasy and almost supernatural with the trees who “look like exotic beasts and also a bit like missing children”. I liked Julian and Katie, they were determined and down to earth whilst others around them only had their own best interests at heart, pretty much like real life I guess. You reap what you sow…. a clever premise and an interesting read.

E.R. Fallon is an author that is new to me and I was intrigued by the synopsis so I thought I’d give the book a go.

We follow the Gold family after Paul, a sickly child who is also an identical twin, goes missing. Strange things start to happen to them, especially around their youngest daughter Katie. There is so much mystery surrounding Paul’s disappearance and nobody wants the family to find out the truth.

The Tree Beast is a mix of folklore and mystery, creating an almost fairytale like story.

I enjoyed the creepy atmosphere of the island, with all the secrets, weird trees and unexplained happenings.

I can’t say too much more about the story line in case of spoilers but if you like your mystery mixed with a little fantasy/supernatural, I’d say you’d definitely enjoy this.

It was a fairly quick read but I did wish it had been a little faster paced but of course that’s just my opinion.

The Tree Beasts is an inventive and intriguing story that will capture your imagination.

I picked this book up from a group I’m in and it seemed like an interesting read. Paul is a twin and one day goes missing while in a playground. The story is told over around 20 years while the family of parents, his twin brother and younger sister deal with the fall out.
The daughter Katie also has a mark on her face that seems to mirror other people in their island town and she is curious and one day finds out when she is able to see memories of herself and her family.
I was very confused as at no point does the writer advise of the country this island is based in, admittedly due to the stilted writing I assumed Scandinavian but I could be wrong. The book is well written spelling and grammar wise but I felt it lacked emotion I didn’t feel very invested in the characters.
I was glad about the ending in general.

This is the first book of ER Fallon that I have read and it is a great introduction to her.

The book starts off very promisingly with a young boy going missing on a mysterious island, but he isn’t the first child to go missing over the years.

The story then jumps ahead and follows the family as they think they keep seeing the boy in the island again.

His mum and sister, Katie, start to investigate all the strange things happening on the island to try and find out what is going on but the locals are determined to keep it all secret.

This is a brilliant book which kept me hooked and intrigued all the way through as it is a supernatural mystery book, which i really enjoyed.

The book is full of tense evil which seems to come out of the trees and makes the whole feel of the book very dark.

Overall it was a great book which I thoroughly enjoyed

This is such a beautifully dark book.

Blackthorn is a creepy place to live, it has menacing trees and its children randomly disappear. It holds a secret that some people are not going to expose, but the parents want answers, what has happened to their children?

Could the trees and children be linked?

When one of the children is reportedly seen, will the secrets finally be revealed?

A great read that I did in one sitting.
