"Night Shift" may be short and nasty, but it's also morally and emotionally troubling: it kept me wondering how far the characters would go kicking the can down the road till they decided they had enough - and I was a bit shocked to find that their moral tolerance was quite high, and only until the climax of the story (pun intended LOL) did they take action. The ending turned out to be completely unpredictable, perhaps even hilarious, and certainly begging for a sequel. This is a tale full of twists and evil surprises!
Combining job horror with the mood and the sensibility of a crime thriller, the story begins innocently enough (new guy's first day on the job), and then derails, totally out of the blue, into a sinister revenge tale (a former employee wants payback) planned out as a depraved game show. What follows is brutal, horrifying, and disturbing - to the point that I often wondered if it might have played out better as horror comedy rather than outright, sick office horror.
Either way, it's an absorbing, unsettling piece of work, and I eagerly recommend it.

DL Winchester presents a novella that is full of workplace horror. Trey's first day on the job is his last when a disgruntled former employee decides it pay back time for the horribleness he witnessed while there. It's play his sick game or die.
What I like about DL's work is he keeps it simple. There's a story to tell and he's one of the masters of short stories. He gets down to business, leaving the fluff that pads a novella into a novel on the cutting room floor. The story is straight and to the point - great set up, action, adventure, death, blood, sex - then an ending that leaves you satisfied but also intrigue to see if there will be a sequel.

Like a Country version of Squid Games meets The Office, where the prize is your life...
I am a big Winchester fan, and this one was like a judo chop to the face of murder, mayhem, and people behaving badly in the workplace. This one had a ton to enjoy, and I can’t say I was a fan of any character for long, but boy, was it fun to read about. This definitely has the feeling of a Jason Statham movie, only in print and with a better script. Great read for adrenaline junkies!
