Judy’s unusual pets—Jaws, Mouse, and Toady—are the center of attention in a new Judy Moody® book for newly independent readers.
Dr. Judy knows a sick pet when she sees one, and Jaws the Venus flytrap is for-sure sick. Time for some urgent care and first aid! Judy Moody, pet vet, will never rest in her efforts to nurse Jaws back to health. In her quest for a medical miracle, Judy finds herself wrangling an unruly toad and seeking help from Mouse, the mind-reading cat. Nothing will stand in the way of Judy’s search for a cure. Not even the fearsome Carnivoria vampira! From Megan McDonald comes this selection of three mini-stories just right for luring young readers into the Moody universe.
"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."
For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."
Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."
More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.
Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.
A short chapter book, with more illustrations, but at about the same reading level as the regular Judy Moody series. After Judy correctly diagnoses what's wrong with her pet Venus flytrap (with a little help from her cat, Mouse), she decides to go into business helping others with pet problems. Trouble is, Stink has a lemonade stand, and the siblings are competing for the same customer base! When Stink's pet frog, Toady, develops uncontrolled peeing, Judy's pet trouble sleuthing is put to its hardest test. As usual, sibling drama zings along side problem-solving.
Illustrations are based on Peter H. Reynolds characters which appear in all the Judy Moody and Stink series, but are by another artist. I wonder why.
In Triple Pet Trouble, Judy's Venus fly trap becomes sick. After she cures him, she decides to help everyone else she knows diagnose and cure their pets as well. This book includes many of the themes kids love in the Judy Moody books: Judy's comical determination in the face of adversity, her realistic relationship with her brother, Stink, and her enthusiasm for all things "rare." It doesn't really offer anything new, but fans of the series won't mind a bit.
Growing up, I loved the Judy Moody chapter books. The Judy Moody and Friends series provides even more Moody adventures with these short picture-heavy chapter books. Each chapter contains its own interconnected story. In this one, Judy tends to a sick Jaws, makes a little extra money with her mind-reading cat, Mouse, and solves the mystery of why Toady keeps peeing in her room.
Fun stories that are simple yet entertaining. These books are more picture heavy, making them a good fit for beginning readers who aren't quite ready for the full-length Judy Moody books yet. These stories also work in some fun facts about various pets, especially the wonders of carnivorous plants.
The trials and tribulations of having pets are covered in this story with Judy Moody and Friends. A lonely Venus flytrap named Jaws, a mystic cat by the name of mouse, a frightened toad named toady, a shedding iguana named Houdini, a parrot named cookie who bites, a disobedient potbellied pig named PeeGee, and several others, and the steps taken to cure and care for them is covered in this story.
Meh, I know these are sort of a classic for kids but I wasn't that impressed. I liked that there were colorful illustrations going along with the story for my 3 year old to look at while reading aloud, but the stories themselves were just nothing special to me and my daughter was not all that interested.
I love this Judy Moody and Friends series! In this one, there is pet trouble for Judy and Stink. Jaws is fighting for his life, Toady is acting berserk, Mouse becomes a fortune teller 😆. This was a fun one.
From Judy Moody and Friends series; Easy chapter book; In this story Judy's Venus fly trap named Jaws is near death. Stink helps his sister figure out what to do. He tries using a goldfish cracker in a fishbowl to fake it out. Very funny parts in this book. Kids will love this series. Recommended Gr. 1-2.
Triple Pet Trouble is a wonderful book starring Judy Moody and her three pets, Mouse the cat, Toady the toad, and her plant Venus-flytrap. This book is about her pets that have caused problems Judy has to solve.
