Colloquial The Complete Course for Beginners has been carefully developed by an experienced teacher to provide a step-by-step course to Ukrainian as it is written and spoken today. Combining a clear, practical and accessible style with a methodical and thorough treatment of the language, it equips learners with the essential skills needed to communicate confidently and effectively in Ukrainian in a broad range of situations. No prior knowledge of the language is required. Colloquial Ukrainian is exceptional; each unit presents a wealth of grammatical points that are reinforced with a wide range of exercises for regular practice. A full answer key can be found at the back as well as useful vocabulary lists throughout. Key features Balanced, comprehensive and rewarding, Colloquial Ukrainian is an indispensable resource both for independent learners and students taking courses in Ukrainian. Audio material to accompany the course is available to download free in MP3 format from www.routledge.com/cw/colloquials. Recorded by native speakers, the audio material features the dialogues and texts from the book and will help develop your listening and pronunciation skills.
Colloqual Ukrainian is not my first Ukrainian textbook and I was a bit skeptical at first for 4 reasons: - The book is (seemingly) not written by native speakers - The first chapters already start with some advanced grammar - The order in which new subjects are introduced seems mixed up - There seem to be some typos where й is written instead of и with an ` accent above to indicate the stress of the word
However, this absolutely does not mean that it is of low quality. I do see an obstacle here for people with 0 knowledge of the language, so I still recommend Yuri Shevchuk's "Beginner's Ukrainian" for the first steps, which also goes into more detail regarding the Ukrainian culture.
For me, Colloquial Ukrainian was a fantastic book to practise and deepen my knowledge. With its large amount of dialogues, texts, and exercises (including sample solutions!) of increasing difficulty, a comprehensive appendix with grammar and vocabulary, as well as free listening media online, this is a fantastic reference and I enjoyed working through it.
The "Colloquial" book series covers a very wide range of different languages and I might move to a different country soon, so I will diferently come back to them.
