I love whatever Douglas writes. It's a given that her story will be 100% crazy and 100% forbidden. After finishing Five Brothers last night, I'm glad she chose to make this Dallas's story because I seriously couldn't figure him out or why he was such an angry person. He too deserves some love and redemption.

"Midnight Curfew" by Penelope Douglas is exactly why we read her books—it is completely chaotic, gloriously toxic, and absolutely impossible to put down.
I spent half this book completely obsessed with the story and the other half wanting to violently shake Dallas and Callum by the shoulders, screaming, “Are you two seriously okay in the head?!” The chemistry between these two is an absolute powder keg. That constant, aggressive "I want to kill you but I also can't keep my hands off you" energy had me in an absolute chokehold. Watching their real, raw vulnerability slowly bleed through all that pure anger and jealousy was everything.
I will admit, some of the drama felt incredibly extra, even by Penelope Douglas standards. A few of their life choices had me rolling my eyes to the back of my head, and the pacing dragged just a tiny bit in places, which is why it’s not a full five-star read for me. But let's be real: if you want a healthy relationship with zero red flags, you are definitely in the wrong place. If you live for dark, steamy enemies-to-lovers, absolutely forbidden dynamics, and two guys with approximately a million emotional problems burning the world down around them, you will completely devour this. 🔥🖤

я вже звикла, що в подібних романах таємне товариство - це здебільшого збіговисько багатіїв, які маніакально схиблені на своїй владі, дрочать на себе, на всіх навколо і потурають своїм максимально огидним збоченням. і тут пані дуглас відірвалася на повну в описах сцен в лігві.
якщо колись вона надумає написати історію про героїв, яких згадувала у wolfe room. наприклад, про них "the three men – one under, one behind, and one in her mouth – all look alike, just different ages. her husband, her brother-in-law, and her father-in-law" або інших подібних збоченців.. от тоді це буде дійсно страшна. довіру це обійшло стороною 🌚🤭

p.s. ай, а це бажання мейкона, щоб усі жили в одному будинки. та кудиии. там спробуй вийти в коридор, ванну, кухню, басейн і хтось та їбеться. ще той вуаєрист походу 😁

Feels like home to be back in Sanoa Bay with the Jaegers. I loved Tryst Six Venom and Five Brothers, so I was giddy when I heard this book was coming out. Definitely one of my most anticipated reads of the year!

It was intriguing to see how Dallas and Callum interacted and understanding their motives behind choices. Everything was so twisted and so manipulative. Talk about ANGST and power dynamics.

PD did an amazing job writing this so it can be read as a standalone, or part of the Jaeger world. She recapped enough details that you get plenty of understanding about the backstory, but it wasn't too much for the readers who already knew. Note: Beware of the trigger warnings! There were some upsetting situations (but mostly occurring in the past...)

The fact that Dallas was a teacher at Marymount was ironic, and hilarious. This book has a good amount of spice, and after the scene with Aracely, I REALLY want a book focused on her. There was so much tension in these pages, and I loved the part at the end where they inspected the pocket knife. #JusticeForAK (Sophia)

Midnight Curfew was one of my most anticipated releases of the year. Dallas was by far my favourite character in Five Brothers and the little excerpt of his and Callum’s at the end was sizzling hot and very promising. Unfortunately, I couldn’t have been more disappointed by the end result.

Jump to 5 years after Five Brothers, Dallas is 25 and a teacher at the local high school. Surprisingly, he didn't seem to be the same jaded, aggro asshole he was back then, which I loved. Naturally, he grew up and matured some, although we didn’t get to see it. Don’t get me wrong, he didn’t become straight-laced or anything and he still had an edge to him, but he was now a Philosophy teacher, so that didn’t exactly scream “trouble maker”. That said, I loved Dallas’s character. I loved how broken and lonely he was, even when surrounded by all those people, and I loved the unwavering commitment to his community. As the middle child in a huge family, with tons of baggage and trauma, he felt he was never good enough no matter how much he tried to prove himself. I got all that and more out of Dallas, and I loved reading about him.

I never thought I’d like Callum, and rightfully so, but I did. Another broken boy, but in a completely different way to Dallas. Callum was an ultra privileged white guy who seemed to have unlimited power and pretty much every opportunity in life. Contrary to Dallas though, his family was fucked up and his father was a rapist and an abuser who belittled Callum his whole life. Does that absolve Callum of the shitty things he did? Not necessarily, but we at least got to see his side of things and maybe gain some perspective. Also, let’s not forget that he was 17 and still very much confused about his sexuality when he hooked up with Dallas, so that must have fucked him up too.

So, my problem was not with Dallas or Callum. My problem was with the writing, the plot and its pacing, among other things.

Maybe it was just me, but this didn’t read like a typical PD book. The writing didn’t flow at all and a lot of the time I found it confusing. Dallas and Callum’s voices blended together, and I had to go back to check whose POV I was reading multiple times. Some of the dialogue did not indicate the person talking and context just wasn't there. Sometimes a character would be seen laying down, but then 5 sentences later they were made to look like they were standing up the whole time. I was very confused and I’ve never ever experienced that before with a PD book. I always found her writing flowing easily and her books, even those I didn’t like, were always page turners. With Midnight Curfew I felt like I was reading an ARC, like it was a draft of a book that hadn't been proofread yet.

Now, the romance. I love a slow burn; give me an angsty, slow burn enemies to lovers romance any day.
Midnight Curfew was not it.
Dallas and Callum absolutely hated each other until, at 80%, they very suddenly and abruptly declare their undying love for one another.

Neither of them expressed any romantic feelings for the other until then, not even came close. They never even considered it in all the pages of their respective inner monologues. They lusted after each other sure, but that is not enough for them to spurt out “I love you”s after treating each other so horribly. Also, let’s not forget that these guys never really had any history. They got together for a month 5 years ago, they broke up in the worst possible way, and never saw each other until now.
Macon and the rest only knew Asshole Callum Ames, you know, the one who stole their money and almost raped their sister (that one…ooof! I still can’t believe they just blew past it), and for them to risk their hides for Callum just didn’t make any sense. I really loved Dallas and Callum, but that was just stupid writing. I think PD focused too much on the enemies part, she made those two say and do horrible things to each other and then suddenly remembered she had to make them get together. By then it was way too late and unfortunately I didn’t buy into their happy ending at all.
At least it didn’t end with marriage/marriage proposal, which I’m very grateful for.

Also, and I can’t believe I’m saying that about a PD book, the smut wasn’t that great.
There were three FM sex scenes in Midnight Curfew, a marketed MM romance, and I find that outrageous.
All Dallas and Callum did was hate-fuck each other, and while that was fun in the beginning, it got old after a while and I just never got emotionally invested. The scenes at the Den were horrible and completely unnecessary. Araceli continues to be used and abused by all the scumbag men in her world, and I pray she doesn’t end up with Army, another fucktard of a man.

I've never read about a character age-regressing because of trauma before, and I found Sophia’s story very interesting. I would love for her to have her own book though rather than take up half of Midnight Curfew, leaving Dallas and Callum’s relationship underdeveloped.

There is a way to make enemies become lovers slowly and naturally, but this was definitely not it. Dallas and Callum’s characters were so strong and had unlimited potential.
Too bad it was wasted.

This book is everything I could have wanted for Dallas/Callum!! I made the mistake of going back and re-reading Five Brothers very recently and it made me absolutely FERAL to get my hands on this book and I didn’t know how I was going to wait until September. So massive thanks to Berkley for offering ARCs and giving this to me because I flew through this and loved every second of reading it!! I mostly read books by audiobook nowadays so you can understand the absolutely dedication I have to read this entire book in text and do it so quickly. I was HOOKED. I was highlighting everything as I was reading because this book is just *chef’s kiss* I will need to get my hands on the physical copy!!

I think the author does a good job of actually recapping and explaining relevant events that happened in Tryst Six Venom and Five Brothers so this could work as a standalone if you’re jumping into the universe of Sanoa Bay with this one. BUT I think it would be so much sweeter if you get the build up by reading the other two books first. This book is the author’s first m/m book but it’s still very much a classic Penelope Douglas story.

I think if you’re read them before, the story won’t be a surprise to you at all, but if you’re coming into this because you only read m/m and haven’t read the author, do know that there are sharing scenes with women. I think the opening chapter sets the tone really well (like the start of Five Brothers) so readers know what they’re getting right from the start.

And I would classify these books as dark romance because these would be a better fit promoted to dark romance readers than people who only read contemporary romance.

This is subject to change since it’s coming from an e-ARC, but the content warnings included in this book from the author says: This book deals with emotionally difficult topics, including violence, coercion, discussions of mental illness and suicide, PTSD, discussions of prior sexual abuse of a non-main character, underage sex, and dubious consent.

I would also add the following content warnings (note: these seem to have been added to an early ALC I briefly listened to for this book, so these might all be in the ebook/physical versions of the book now): homophobia, racism, and emotional and physical domestic abuse.

Dallas Jaeger and Callum Ames are toxic for one another and I love how they can stand toe to toe and duke it out. This angst is DELICIOUS and a slow burn for the ages. This book had me wondering just how they’d actually wind up together because it gets super intense.

Remember, it’s been building up to this point where Callum’s father is out to steal Sanoa Bay, the part of the Seminole land that’s been in Dallas’ family for generations. What surprised me is that Garrett Ames wasn’t who we had to worry about the most regarding this, it’s his son Callum. I love that we do get a resolution here and I wonder now what the underlying plot would be if we ever get books for the other brothers in the Jaeger family - Iron, Trace, and Army.

There are some flashback characters but nothing explicit in the flashback chapters. I was wondering how this would go since I just finished reading Devil’s Night and felt like anything could be on the table. Callum is 22 and Dallas is 25 in the present day chapters. This book is told from both their POVs and in first-person.

Dallas is dealing with unresolved trauma and guilt surrounding his mother’s death when he was just 13. And Callum is dealing with the weight of his father’s expectations. His father is also an absolute creep and all around TERRIBLE person.

We see a lot of Liv/Clay and Krisjen/Macon, and they’re all as happy as can be in this book. It’s interesting to see them from outside POVs like Dallas and Callum because Dallas is around Clay and Krisjen a lot more now and he was downright antagonistic about Krisjen in their home for most of 5B. Callum and Krisjen used to hang out all the time in high school, he was ready to marry Clay one day, and he still owes Liv the BIGGEST apology for what his part in what happened in T6V.

We get more hints at Army/Aracely and I need their book so bad!! But why do I think we will get their book last??

We see the return of Jerome Watson (who Krisjen was supposed to marry) and he’s slightly less terrible here? He was a creep in 5B. But I don’t know what to make of him here since most of his interactions are with Callum and he’s…not terrible? But maybe that’s because Milo Price is also back and he should’ve been dumped in the swamp 4 years ago like the guys were about to do before they had a change of heart. Callum is also friends with a guy called Vincent but you don’t have to know much about him.

Callum’s stepsister, Sophia but goes by Anna-Katherine, is two years younger than him and a big presence in his life and I actually like her a lot and wonder if we’ll see more of her in future books and see her getting a HEA (but way down the line of course). She’s extremely traumatized from events that have happened to her in the past. We don’t see anything graphic on the page but we do get a lot of things alluded to, and well, we see what it’s done to her. Do take the content warnings for this book seriously!!

Since writing this review, the audiobook narrators have been revealed and disappointing for me personally, the narrator for Dallas is not Andrew Eiden (Teddy Hamilton) who voiced the character's POV chapters in Five Brothers. So, if you're listening to these books back-to-back, it will be a bit jarring. Instead, his part is voiced by Javi Wilder, who is new-to-me. And the part of Callum is performed by another new-to-me narrator, Shawn K. Jain (although I think the initial narrator listed on websites was an entirely different narrator and they are not the same person using a pseudonym from what I can tell).

I did listen to a bit of the audio available on the Penguin Random House audiobook app where they offer early audiobooks to listen to and review, and the vibe of the performances don't really work for me. Javi Wilder was actually okay as Dallas, but I was expecting something more along the lines of the Tempting Venom audiobook by Rina Kent, which had been narrated by Teddy Hamilton and JF Harding. Shawn K. Jain on 1x speed is…okay… but I never listen to audiobooks at 1x, and at my usual 1.7x and 2x, it's just not the same vibe for Callum for me. No fault to the narrators, but just not casting that worked for me here. This audiobook is also only dual narrated, not duet. Which, usually it's fine. But maybe a bit disappointing when you listen to one and go right into another m/m audiobook where the story and characters give the same vibe but the audiobook production is just not the same.

Other than the disappointment of the audiobook, I actually really did love this book and I feel like I want to re-read the other two books in this universe again!! The downside to reading a book early before publication is that I had no one else to talk to regarding this book. But just know that Dallas/Callum are everything and this book absolutely delivered for me, and it'll definitely be something I re-read by text!

I love just how much Penelope Douglas stretches my sanity to a point where I’m contemplating everything that I consider the norms too plain. I loved everything about this. It’s such a fun palate cleanser after reading books that’s more mellow 🕊️👀

Dallas and Callum are AMAZING characters. Love books where both the characters are equally morally black and manipulative where everything feels like a game ❤️🚩 Loved the ending twist with Callum showing just how much he’s capable of.

Do not read this if you like a more conventional story because it’s NOT that. It’s anything but that. It’s dark and delicious so perfect for me

i’m sorry, but what was that? dallas annoyed me for pretty much the entire book. where was the yearning?? the tension?? i mean, we were grabbing forearms by chapter 3! 😭😳

and why were there so many scenes with women? i love mm romances so much, but this felt like a weird mix of mm/ff/mf/idek. i was genuinely confused about what direction we were going in. i understood dallas’s job in the beginning, and i could even understand why he was such a dick at first, but eventually it just felt annoying and almost… performative.😕

i think my biggest issue was that it felt like dallas and the mmc already had a connection before the book even started, and we were just dropped into the middle of it. i never really got to experience that build-up or feel the tension developing between them. the jealousy tactics were kinda cute at first, but they became so repetitive that they eventually lost the plot? 🙃

i love penelope douglas, and i really did love five brothers, which honestly made this one even more disappointing. i would’ve much rather seen army’s story because i was way more interested in him.

I remember reading Five Brothers and being so intrigued by Dallas, I’m glad that he finally got his own story.

“I never let myself want much, because nothing was permanent. I saw everything as something I would lose eventually, but right now-tonight-I have him.”

This was so toxic, messy, full of angst and I loved every second of it! The tension between these two was insane!

Dallas is dealing with the unresolved trauma of his mother’s death. He has a lot of anger and guilt that he needs to work through.
Callum is the golden boy of the town, with the world at his feet. But all the money and opportunities can’t get him the one thing he really wants.

There is a lot of family drama going on and I definitely recommend reading Five Brothers and Tryst Venom Six beforehand.

In the teaser he said he’d be laughing when Callum came back to destroy him except when it happened nothing was funny 😭😭😭😭 he literally went to cry to God about it 😭😭😭😭

Also…..? Why is there little to no Clay in this but I had to see Krisjen every other page…..? I don’t give a fuck about that girl or her pregnancy or her fucking husband. Please, moving forward I want to see LESS of maconkrisjen. LESS. Clayliv got engaged years ago and still not married but Krisjen gets to be? okay sure.

Aracely and Army scene in this 😹 the nerve of him to call her a whore selling herself to white men when he never fucks anyone but a Saint. He’s gonna be sick asf when Ara and Jerome are dating ✌🏽Also Ara really greatest character to ever do it I can’t. The Queen of Sanoa Bay. Also the fact that Army calls her celi is still cute I guess 😒

Sophia Anna-Katherine IS SO FUCKING CUTE we literally have to kill Garrett Ames I’m not even kidding. She’s DC’s first born and we love it 🧸💙💚 I want to see her with Iron I do. Trace is a man who’ll end up with a swamp girl. Or maybe it’s vice-versa but either way there’s too many saints in the Jaeger house. Aracely can’t be the only one.

This is dark, raunchy and the tension is top tier it gave me chills god damn. The jealousy, fighting, plotting, the families, the drama LORD i need a chill pill. With them hate and love is veryyyy thin line and it’s so filthy hot. Page 433 took me out completely. This book was everything and more holy Penelope did it again with this one , just gonna put this beside tryst six venom on my golden shelf❤️‍🔥😩💋❤️‍🩹🥵🔥

3.5 dallascallum are buzzy i fear 🤦‍♀️

dallas actually used to be my least favorite jaeger sibling but pd managed to make me like him a bit. there were some... questionable scenes (in true pd fashion) but whatever i was still invested.

also why did no one in the book make a comment about clay and callum being in the same family now. like is no one going to point out that clay's gay ex boyfriend is kind of her brother in law now

Okay… I’m landing at a 3.75 for this one.

I liked this. I was invested. I absolutely had moments where I was like, “Ohhh okay Penelope, I see what you’re doing.” The tension between Dallas and Callum was probably my favorite part because these two could not simply exist in the same vicinity without making everything approximately 100 times more complicated than it needed to be. I was rather impressed with this being P Doug’s first MM book too!

Now on to the downside… this book is LONG. And unfortunately, I felt the length in places. There were moments where I felt like we were circling the same thing over and over again. Some of the repetition and pacing kept this from being a solid 4 for me.

That being said, I had a good time. It was messy, dramatic, angsty, chaotic, and very much a Penelope Douglas book. And honestly, that’s why I keep returning to her books.

So yeah… 3.75 stars. I liked it. I had fun. I have complaints.
