Binged it in one sitting. I liked how this book started, but I LOVED how it ended. Talk about setting healthy boundaries, way to go, Riley! I liked that Riley and Jake were on "different" sides, but working toward the same end goal. Riley was so quirky and sweet, and I absolutely loved the way her brain processed everything. I liked that the attraction was almost immediate, but nothing happened between them for a while. The spice was nice, not too sweet and not overpowering; it really made sense for the dynamic between Riley and Jake. Without giving away spoilers, I will say that the last bit of the book was my absolute favorite. Self-advocacy, mental health, healthy boundaries, friendship, and self-acceptance, yes, yes, YES!

Thank you to Cracked Pepper Books and Kate Wilder for the ARC!
Thanks @crackedpepperbooks for the ARC! What a wild ride this was! I felt like the romance was incredibly realistic, and the writing puts you right in the heat of it all! Would definitely recommend!
This follows Riley, a Fire Behaviour Analyst who is placed with the Bitterroot Brigade to collect more data and analytics for Project Phoenix. With the help of Jake Sullivan, a Superintendent who has been asked to take her on board, things start off very rocky. Can she survive his grumpy behaviour?
This was a good read. I loved how it revolved around Dr Riley Smith, a woman in STEM who is trying to have Project Phoenix implemented across fire stations. She is smart and highly intelligent but struggles with the social side and reading people. The story also explores guilt, grief, and emotions. Jake is a very complex character who has built strong walls over the years. He can be harsh at times, but it comes from a place of wanting to keep her safe. Once you understand why he is the way he is, you can see the weight he has been carrying on his shoulders. I was glad the last 20% explored him getting help and working through his struggles to get the girl in the end.
I do want to mention a few things. For the first 30–40% the story revolves around multiple fires and being at the fire station most of the time or working constantly. I think I wanted to learn more about the characters and more vivid descriptions about scenes so I can picture what it looks like in my mind. The first spicy scene also felt a bit like a business transaction with the lead-up. It was good, but I honestly didn’t expect him to ask “pill or condoms?” so bluntly it actually made me laugh.
Now for the unrealistic element. I enjoy reading books that feel like they could happen in real life, and I just felt there were too many fire incidents happening in such a small town. I understand it’s central to the story, but it felt a bit heavy-handed.
Overall, this was a good read that kept me engaged and wanting to see how it would all end.

Riley will prove grumpy Jack that while she's new at the job,she knows what she's doing.Firefighter Jack don't need scientist Riley to tell him how to do his job,and those two don't have a nice start working together. But there's more to Riley then her data, and there's more to Jack then being bossy and grumpy.
Will they figure out this attraction between them?
I can honestly say that this book set me in flames. It was not just a firefighter romance, both characters struggling with something added such a emotional depth to the story, that it made me few times tear up.I liked Riley, different from most FMC I read about, she's on point, not playing games and quite blunt. And then there's Jack,I mean someone hose that guy down, because he is a walking fire, grumpy, hot and then tender and sweet. Both so fun to read about, with this tension filled moments, the grief and guilt filled ones,I got a story that is not pretty or perfect ,but it shows a deep connection and understanding that Riley and Jack feel and then fight for.Tiny bit of spice was really something else,on front with expectations Riley and Jack made this moment not only sexy but also so cute. Without spoiling the book,I can only say that this story will stay with me for a long time, definitely a re-read for me.
If you looking for a romance that is not perfect but filled with a lot emotions,I would 100% recommend this one.
Thank you Cracked Pepper Books for arc,my review is honest and my own.
Thank you to Kat Wilder and Cracked Pepper Books for allowing me to be part of the Arc Team and for giving me a free copy of this book.
It’s a 4.5 🌟 from me!! What a read!! I absolutely loved it!! A spicy romance with a heart stopping theme of wildfire fire fighting! It has ALL the feels!
We have a grumpy MMC suffering with his mental health due to a past trauma and spunky FMC who is intelligent, exceptional, funny and determined but with her own tragic past.
The detail in this book makes it irresistible, it is so immersive and the pacing is spot on! There is an element of slow burn and some romance drama written so well that you feel it in your bones.
All of the characters are extremely likeable but Riley is by far my favourite character. Her synesthetic brain is so unusual and shapes her quirky personality so well.
The only reason for not going with 5 stars was the ending…. It’s bittersweet because although I felt it to abrupt for my liking it does set the scene for the next book.
I love this authors writing style and attention to detail. I will defiantly be keeping an eye out for more books from her!
I was given an ARC of Forecasting Flames by Kat Wilder, and I went into it expecting a solid firefighter romance. What I did not expect was the level of detail around forest firefighting. The knowledge woven into this book was seriously impressive. You can tell the author either did deep research or has firsthand insight, because the wildfire operations, strategy, and risk all felt authentic and grounded. It added a whole extra layer of intensity to the story. And yes — the slow burn (don’t mind the fire pun) was absolutely superb. The tension between the two leads simmered in the best way. Nothing felt rushed. Every interaction built naturally, and when things finally did spark, it was earned.
One of my favourite aspects was how the characters handled boundaries. In a genre that sometimes leans heavily on drama-for-drama’s-sake, it was refreshing to see two adults communicate, respect each other’s space, and still maintain chemistry that practically lit the page on fire. Healthy dynamics are attractive — full stop.
This book genuinely made me want to read more forest firefighting romances, which is not something I thought I’d ever say. Kat Wilder may have just opened up a whole new niche for me.
If you like: Slow-burn tension Competent, capable leads Realistic job detail that enhances the romance Emotional maturity alongside heat
…then this one is absolutely worth picking up. Highly recommend — and I’ll definitely be watching for whatever Kat Wilder writes next.
This book was a 4.5 star read for me! I loved the deep emotions throughout this book. Both the MMC and FMC have experienced loss and it continues to affect them in their current and future choices till the end. I loved Riley’s “synesthetic ability” as it was a new take on a story I hadn’t read before. The tension between the two main characters was perfect, the spice was light, and overall you understand the ending (no spoilers). I would have given it 5 stars but I wanted a little more at the end of the book. However I am definitely looking forward to Kat’s next read! I received an advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.
I took a gamble on this book and author, since I’ve never read their work before! This book effectively broke open my heart, and stitched it back together again. The character story lines were well written and cohesive, I could understand why they were making the decisions they made! There is so much tension and drama from the fire fighting aspect of it, the stakes were real.. and I felt them deeply! I loved this book, even though the ending made me want to throw something with how abrupt it was 😭
I received this book as an arc and boy I’m glad I did. First off I love me a firefighter romance. Pair that with a nerdy woman in STEM? Hell to the yes. Loved the instant attraction, but the slow burn. Healthy boundaries, setting goals & achieving them, overcoming grief and trauma. This book had it all. It had me laughing, sweating and going “awwww” all at the same time. Can’t wait for the next bitterroot instalment.
I typically read romantasy, but was looking for a contemporary romance palate cleanser and this book was exactly that! The FMC and MMC are both very endearing and it was refreshing to read about mature characters. I loved the FMCs quirky, awkward, science-nerd personality and how the grumpy MMC loved her for it. The fire science drew me in and kept me interested and the romance felt realistic and believable. This book was exactly what I needed!
I received an arc copy of this book from the publishing company. Such a great read! This book is so full of details, imagery, and the descriptions had my heart racing like I was on the scene! The relationships and the self awareness that shows out in this book are so heart warming and so real. There’s some spice here and there to keep me on my toes but such a great story line, plot, and overall read!
I look forward to what comes next for these characters!
I received this book as an ARC and boy am I glad I did! I thoroughly enjoyed Riley & Jake’s story! The yearning, the forced proximity, the woman in STEM, and the boundaries set by Riley - so good! I read this on my kindle on the way to work each morning (no worries, my hubby drives since we work at the same place) and I always hated putting it down when I had to walk inside! Cannot wait to read what is in store next for Sage and Ryan!!
ARC Review: Riley is the kind of FMC I instantly connected with. As someone who doesn't always find socializing easy, I loved how authentic she feels. She's strong, self-assured, and not afraid to stand her ground.
And the slow burn?? Immaculate. The tension is amazing and I can’t look away. I loved the growth and personal strength within Jake. I would love to read more by Kat.
I received this as an ARC and read it so fast! I love Ali Hazelwood and love that this book also has the same intelligent main characters. I ate this up! The only thing I wish I would have seen more of was the connection between the main characters grow before they admitted the attraction. That being said, I recommend this book and will be reading more from her!
color. In shapes. In living, breathing patterns thanks to her synesthesia. Weather data turns into a private light show in her mind and she reads it like prophecy. She is brilliant. Precise. A little socially adrift. I loved her instantly. A scientist who lives in her head, stepping into a world ruled by instinct and muscle.
Enter Jake Sullivan. Fifteen years on a hotshot crew. Scarred by flame in ways that go beyond skin. He trusts sweat, grit, and gut. Control is his religion because he knows exactly what happens when things spin out of it. He does not need a data whispering analyst telling him where fire might go.
The friction? Immediate. Delicious. Sparks snapping in every conversation.
The Montana fire season backdrop is relentless. You feel the heat crawling up your spine. The urgency. The unpredictability. Forced proximity hits different when you are sharing smoke choked air and sleeping in the dirt while mountains burn around you. The stakes are not cute. They are life and death.
What wrecked me was watching Jake’s past stalk him while Riley tries to prove she belongs in a world that measures worth in blisters and bravery. She has to fight not just the fire but the quiet doubt that she is too different, too cerebral, too much. And Jake has to face the thing he buried under layers of discipline and silence.
Their slow burn romance is perfection. It builds like a backburn line, steady and strategic, until suddenly everything ignites. He is alpha, yes, but not in a hollow chest beating way. His redemption arc feels earned. He learns to trust her mind the way she learns to trust his instincts. Brain meets brawn and instead of canceling each other out, they amplify.
There are moments so tender they almost hurt. Jake seeing the world the way Riley does, even just a glimpse. Riley realizing that strength does not only live in data but in scarred hands that refuse to quit.
This book is high stakes suspense wrapped around a love story that feels elemental. Fire as destruction. Fire as rebirth. Two people forged in heat choosing to stand in it together.
Forecasting Flames is the first (#1) book in the BITTERROOT HOTSHOT CREW series.
Superintendent Firefighter Jake Sullivan has spent well over a decade on a hotshot crew. He trusts his team, he trusts his equipment, he trusts his gut. Experience has taught him the dire consequences of losing control, so he’s determined to keep everything locked down.
When Fire Behaviour Analyst Dr Riley Smith arrives with her synesthesia and her brilliant mind, she turns Jake’s life upside down. Despite his initial animosity towards the socially awkward woman who seems to live in her own head, Jake quickly finds himself drawn to her. But with Riley struggling to fit into a world that doesn’t understand her and Jake fighting his own demons, can they find a way through together?

This was my first read by Kat Wilder and boy was it great. I’ll definitely be looking out for more of her work!!
With intense, well written firefighting action right from the off, this book gets your heart pounding and your pulse racing from the very first page to the last.
The descriptions of the firefighters actions and the reasons behind it were really helpful in picturing the scenes. I really enjoyed all the firefighter scenes.
I REALLY enjoyed the depiction of Riley’s synesthesia, it was really detailed and the insights into her thought process were fascinating. It was clear that the author had a real insight to how it feels to live with synesthesia.
I truly couldn’t put this book down and the pages were turning themselves!
There are open door spicy scenes but they are very tastefully done.
I read an ebook copy of this book, with around 260 pages, great editing and a colourful, artistic cover.
With thanks to the author and Cracked Pepper Books LLC for a chance to read this book.
⭐️🌟⭐️🌟 keep in mind the star review is based off of MY interests!
Where my STEM ✖️ girls at?? This one’s for you!
Riley is a little different, she sees colors 🌈where one sees numbers and she’s a little awkward. Riley is not a “vanilla character.” She doesn’t always think before she speaks and doing that in front of the big man in charge 👀👀👀. Jake runs a crew 🔥 and does literally everything to make sure things run smoothly. His mind is set that computers have no place in firefighting.
Both Riley and Jake have both lost someone to the flames. They pour their heart and soul into their work, leaving little room for friendships or relationships. They found each other though. They fight, they make decisions that frustrates one another. There is confusion and dare I say it… feelings 💙.
I felt the interest between Riley and Jake didn’t really have a build up.. it was casually slipped into the narrative, but was redeemed with the rest of their interactions through the book. The two find a unique way to show each other love. I LOVED that they each stick up for themselves.
The growth of the characters in this book 💥 exceeded all expectations and were very realistic. Forecasting Flames digs into and busts wide open how hard it can be to be ready for a relationship after loss.
The secondary character have a small but interesting addition to the story, setting the book up for a sequel!!
It will help reading this book if you know some fire terminology. Even if you don’t, you’ll still understand what’s going on!
You should read this if you enjoy: wildland fighting, small town romance, slow burn a little 🌶️🌶️, comeback story, minimal spice but some.
Triggers: mental health, grief.
Thanks for the advanced copy Kat Wilder and Crackedpepperbooks!
I am voluntarily leaving this review, all my thoughts are my own!
I received an ARC from Cracked Pepper Books, and I start by saying that I am so so happy I requested it after seeing a post from the Editor on Facebook! Seriously, I could have read this in one sitting, but unfortunately, life does not let me sit down as much as I would like. Sooooo, I devoured it at any chance I could.
The book follows the story of Riley, a weather scientist, and Jake, the superintendent at the station she is placed to test her forecasting system to help firefighters better react to weather changes during wildfires, ultimately saving lives. Both of them have traumas in their past, and although Jake struggles to let people in, he starts to lower his walls around Riley, and they become friends who share what feels like an unavoidable connection.
What did I love the most? Riley´s quirk and smart brain, her synesthisia, her being socially awkward and all the analogies with the way computers and softwares work: "Now I was more aware of my own heartbeat than I´d been in years. Maybe ever. I ran a quick internal diagnostic:I wanted to do this again" or "My brain usually running a dozen background processes, had narrowed to a single input stream. Jake.". I LOVE IT!!
What did I value the most? The emphasis on mental health and the path one must take to heal, to not hide from the hurt, but face it. It takes work, it takes courage, it takes making yourself a priority so you can love yourself and others. Such work was very well portrayed by Jake´s story.
The writing is fluid, and the pace is very good. Every time I started reading, I didn´t want to stop....that´s always the best sign.
I wish Kat Wilder all the best. May this story reach a lot of readers, and may they be as happy as I while reading it. Can´t wait for Ryan and Sage´s story!
This is a dual POV, forced proximity/workplace, medium burn, "enemies" to lovers romance with themes of PTSD, grief, self-acceptance, and healing. Women in STEM & neurodivergent representation as well :) This was honestly such a great read! I really liked Kat Wilder's writing style and storytelling & I'm looking forward to book #2 <3
My EPICS rating system:
Enjoyment: 10/10; I really enjoyed the MCs, the storyline, and the growth throughout
Plot: 9/10; I liked the high-stakes setting and that Riley and Jake came together with different backgrounds but similar goals. The firefighter & fire analyst duo worked so well! I didn't have any serious issues and felt like the main conflict and ultimate resolution was completely justified. I do wish the ending was expanded just a little.
Investment: 10/10; an easy time commitment and I found myself thinking about the book when I wasn't reading it
Characters: 9/10; Jake is a hypervigilant veteran turned firefighter. I enjoyed his grumpiness and protectiveness throughout but really glad he put in the much-needed work at the end of the book. Riley is an overanalytical scientist with synesthesia (possibly autistic) who struggles with human connection, quieting her mind, and trusting her body (same girl). I thought Jake and Riley complemented each other well.
Spice: 7/10; this was advertised as a slow burn, but it's definitely more of a medium burn imo. The spice was *hot* (pun intended lol) and written pretty well, I just wished she made us wait a little longer. Nothing cringe or over-the-top <3
Thank you to Cracked Pepper Books and Kate Wilder for an advanced copy of Forecasting Flames 🔥
There’s so much to enjoy about this book, from a cute romance, to fantastically written grief and mental health rep. Riley and Jake’s romance gets off to a rocky start but each of them gives the other a place to heal and ground themselves, almost like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle slotting together. I really liked how Kate explored the concept of someone’s mental health struggles affecting a relationship and how well “resolved” it came to at the end, and Jake’s new career is the perfect way to round this aspect of the book of. It was also really well done how Riley came across as not your typical FMC, how she worked based on data and research and observations rather than emotions, and I liked how she comforted via facts because to her, data and facts are comfort.
One thing I’ve never come across in a book before is synethesia but I liked how it worked in this situation and how Riley put it to good use to develop PHOENIX, it was a refreshing addition to the story that wasn’t a cliche trope we usually see with female main characters.
The side characters around Jake and Riley were so well written and it’s clear that Kate has put so much time and research into writing this book, and hopefully we get Sage and Ryan’s story soon!
Again a big thank you to Kate for the ARC ✨

This book was such a surprise for me, my first Kat Wilder and now I absolutely need more.
I adored Rylie. Her inner thoughts felt incredibly real, the constant analysing of every interaction, trying to interpret what people mean, always feeling just a step out of sync but still making the effort. That sense of knowing your brain works differently yet still wanting to connect landed hard, because underneath all her intelligence and overthinking she just wanted genuine human connection.
The push-and-pull between Rylie and Jack built beautiful tension, but honestly the real magic was in the quiet moments. Watching Jack recognise how her mind works and not seeing it as “too much” but as something worth understanding and celebrating that was what made this romance feel special.
The firefighting scenes added another layer entirely. They were intense, heart-pounding, and you could feel the adrenaline coming off the page.
But the real depth of the story came through Jack’s PTSD journey. His growth felt authentic and earned, and I loved that Rylie didn’t fix him, she wasn’t with him but she was present, steady, supportive. It made their relationship feel grounded and mature rather than idealised.
I genuinely couldn’t fault this one. An unexpected favourite and I’ll be picking up more from this author immediately.
Just finished this ARC read and I’m sitting somewhere in the middle with it.
The premise of this story was great and honestly what pulled me in to begin with. Riley and Jake had really strong chemistry and you could feel that tension between them from early on.
But when this book says slow burn… it really means slow. Nothing really started picking up until about the halfway point, and getting there felt like a bit of a struggle. Riley spends a lot of time in her head, and while I can relate to that in real life, it made it harder for me to stay connected to the story.
By the time things finally started moving, I was more invested in Jake trying to get his life together. What confused me though was the ending direction with that. I didn’t really understand why he had to go through that process completely alone or why Riley couldn’t be there to support him. That part just didn’t sit right with me.
The spice was also pretty minimal. There were only two scenes and they felt a little clunky and awkward rather than natural.
Overall, I liked the concept and the chemistry between Riley and Jake was definitely there. It just didn’t quite deliver the way I was hoping it would.
From the very start of Forecasting Flames, I was completely hooked. There was no slow build needed — the story grabbed my attention immediately and refused to let go.
Right away I could tell the banter between the MFC and MMC was going to be top tier, and wow… it absolutely delivered. The tension, the back-and-forth, the little jabs at each other — it all screamed enemies-to-lovers in the best possible way, and I was eating up every second of it.
Riley is such a fantastic MFC. I loved how quirky and observant she is, constantly analyzing the people and situations around her. It made her feel so real and relatable. One line that had me actually chuckling was: "He'd rolled his sleeves up at some point. Forearms. That was a thing I was noticing now, apparently..." Her internal commentary and the way she slowly realizes her attraction and connection was so fun to read.
And honestly? I was not ready for this book to end. When I reached the final page, I genuinely kept trying to swipe for the next chapter even though it clearly said the book was complete. That’s how invested I was.
I will absolutely be continuing this series and reading whatever Kat Wilder writes next. Consider me officially hooked. 👏🔥
Jake is the superintendent of Alpha Fire, has a military background and lots of experience with all things fire and being bossy. He’s struggling after he lost two of his men in a fire that he couldn’t have prevented, no matter what he did.
Riley has a thing for numbers, science and data. She turns her numbers and data into a system that can predict where fires will jump to, where they will blow up, how the weather affects the fires and the safest route in and out. She’s passionate about saving people after loosing her best friend to fire when she was younger.
Her and Jake get off to a bad start, he doesn’t think she’s going to offer anything that will help and will be more of a pain and get in the way. She knows she can help if he will give her the chance. Things get heated when they can no longer put their feelings aside. What she doesn’t know? He was the superintendent in charge of a fire where two lives were lost and she reported on it and how her technology would have made a difference.
Can’t wait to see what happens in the next book, here’s hoping it’s Sage and Torres heating things up!

Forecasting Flames was an enjoyable read with a premise that stood out to me within the firefighter romance genre. I especially appreciated that the female lead felt unique compared to many others in similar stories. Her perspective and the way she approached situations helped give the story its own personality.
One of my favorite parts of the book was watching the relationship between Riley and Jake develop. Their dynamic felt natural, and I liked seeing how their connection grew while they navigated the challenges around them.
The wildfire setting and the hotshot crew added an exciting backdrop that kept the story moving and gave the characters interesting situations to work through. It made the world feel immersive and added to the overall atmosphere of the book.
Overall, Forecasting Flames was a solid and engaging story. If you enjoy romance set in high-stakes environments with strong character dynamics, this is definitely a book worth checking out. I’m interested to see where the series goes from here.
I was given an advance reader copy (ARC) of this book, and these are my honest thoughts.
This was a truly engaging read. I especially appreciated the dynamic between Riley and Jake—their chemistry was filled with tension that made every interaction compelling. Riley’s character stood out in a refreshing way; her quirky, socially awkward nature offered a unique and authentic portrayal of how differently people can interpret and express their emotions.
In contrast, Jake’s Type A personality and emotionally guarded demeanor, shaped by his military background and past work-related trauma, added depth and complexity to the story. Watching Riley break through his hardened exterior was both satisfying and heartfelt.
The slow-burn romance was executed at just the right pace, filled with a palpable sense of longing that kept me invested throughout. One of the most impactful elements was Jake’s growth—his willingness to seek professional help for his trauma, driven by his care for Riley, added a meaningful layer to his character and their relationship.
Overall, this was a beautifully written story about emotional vulnerability, healing, and connection.
This book captivated me right from the beginning. The story is so intense and emotional that I couldn't help but get emotional myself. I didn't put this one down until I finished it.
Riley is a scientist trying to prove her system will help firefighters in the field have better results and less casualties. She lost someone dear to her in a fire when she was young so this is important to her. Jake is the superintendent firefighter struggling with a past filled with two teammates who died in the line of duty. Jake and Riley clash at first but Riley is good at standing her ground. Things start to heat up in more ways than one..
Riley and Jake were sweet together. I especially liked their personalities. Riley's nerdiness was adorably funny and quirky. Jake was this strong leader trying to always keep everyone safe. They brought out the best in each other.
Lots of action, heartwarming slow burn romance and firemen will keep you wanting to read this one. I especially found all the scientific fire stuff interesting! I'm excited for the next book with Sage hopefully!
Thank you to Cracked Pepper Books and the author for this ARC.
5⭐️
I adored this book. The characters were well developed and realistically flawed. This was not a fluffy love story. It was an emotionally gripping, hight stakes romance where the characters seemed so real, you were REALLY rooting for them. Not just their romance, but their success, and their healing.
*Possible plot point spoilers:
Riley was a socially awkward nuerodivergent scientist who struggled to get out of her own head, and just "be" because she saw everything as data points. Her progression as she fell for Jake was realistically represented, not rushed. And when she realized she deserved more, she stood her ground.
And you can't help but feel for Jake. In my familiarity with critical incident management, he was a spot on depiction of post incident trauma/PTSD. His healing journey was heartbreaking, but necessary. I love how they recognized and love each other through their struggles.
Hoping that Sage and Ryan's story is coming soon!
