Rookie

Rate this book
Louis is the youngest candidate accepted into the police academy in more than ten years. At just nineteen, he’s immediately marked as an outsider—too young, too inexperienced, and far too vulnerable in a world that thrives on pressure and power.
Nicknamed Rookie, Louis becomes a target from day one

Agents Heath Axton and Scott Wolf are relentless in their training methods, pushing him harder than anyone else, testing his limits, and forcing him to either break or rise. What begins as discipline slowly becomes something far more complicated—charged, unspoken, and impossible to ignore. But the academy is only the beginning.

When Louis graduates and steps into the real world, the stakes escalate. The line between authority and desire blurs, past trauma resurfaces, and the life Louis has fought to build begins to fracture under the weight of expectation, danger, and truth. He’s lost everything once before—and this time, the consequences could be permanent.

Rookie is a dark, why-choose, crime thriller layered with vulnerability, tension, and a slow-burn M/M/M romance that challenges power, trust and survival.

Elise Rose is an Australian author of dark romantic thrillers blending crime, tension, and emotionally intense relationships. Her stories live in the space between danger and devotion — where protection can become possession and love is never simple.

She writes why-choose romance featuring complex characters forced together by circumstance, secrets, and survival. Expect slow-burn connection, high stakes investigations, hurt-comfort, and characters who would do anything to keep the people they love safe.

Her books focus as much on emotional healing as they do suspense, combining thriller pacing with deeply character-driven romance.

When she isn’t writing, Elise can usually be found plotting future books, talking with readers online, or thinking about fictional men far more than is socially acceptable.

I want to start off by saying I really enjoyed the storyline and the story telling in this book. The characters had real depth, the emotional angst/turmoil of the story genuinely made me feel things - which is a feat in itself. The author seems to have a detailed understanding of police protocols and it was easily understandable for someone that does not.

I enjoyed the dynamic between the characters, the wholesome love they shared that goes deeper than just sexual moments (which is again rather rare). The spice was spicing and just enough to make sure that the storyline and character development was at the forefront.

I do feel that there were certain areas that could have had a little bit more focus ie the ending/recovery - but I absolutely understand that with a book of this size, there did need to be some condensing happening. I personally would have liked to have a bit more character descriptions, I feel like I only really know what they look like from the character art that has been posted in the teasers.

I think the length is just right, I am usually leaning more towards a smaller book size, but I didn’t feel as though I was losing interest. I didn’t feel like I was getting lost, the book had me gripped and present while reading.

I am an avid mmm enthusiast and this is definitely at the top of that list. I will absolutely be purchasing any other mmm books by the author and I will be recommending this book to others.

The story started strong but went too fast into the two older MMCs in love with the young recruit. The build up wasn't believable but then the seriousness of their relationship went from zero to 100 in an instant.

The plot points were interesting but felt unfinished. It felt like there was so much more potential in this story.

I did enjoy when Louis was doing his detective work but there wasn't much of it.

I still overall enjoyed it.

"Rookie, another lap. now!" from the first line it had me. The layout of the chapters in this book by Elise Rose is more like a flowing conversation rather than typical structured chapters and I like that. I like that it is so different and so.. fast paced that I don't feel like my attention is falling.. ever.

On the first page Heath come's across like an hard ass "Hurry up, Rookie, you're falling behind!" also here where Heath says "If you need a break, Rookie, I can arrange for a permeant one." I gasped. In this moment I was thinking the sheer audacity of this whole man. But then there is a sweet moment not long after where you see a softer side of Heath which somewhat redeems him in my book this far into the book (Chapter Two).. and we are still on the first chapter!

Personally I like how fast moving the dynamics between Louis, Heath and Scott moved, because it made sense with how long Louis was at the academy, I just wish there was a reconnecting with Louis and Noah.. that still hurts my soul a little.

Going forward the one thing that just itched that spot in my mind that I love when authors write with multiple people within one scene is how wonderfully Elise was able to bring Louis, Heath and Scott and even Rhys's, Cody and Noah. How well the author has described them and built up their personalities if you are a visual reader like me I could picture them all (plus the ither characters in my mind so easily and easily swap between them.)

Elise really knows how to write to keep you on the edge of your seat, your heart pumping and how to make you either fall in love with characters or hate them with so much soul you need a moment after certain chapters. The flow of the story is great I felt while some chapters are chaos in the best of ways the story still bleeds throughout all of them.

I really enjoyed reading this book. A easy five star read because it kept my attention, it kept me on the edge of my seat, between the chaos there were really sweet and emotional scenes that made my heart squeeze just a little bit harder. I look forward to reading the authors other works. I will be recommending this book alone to people I know who like this genre of book.

I jumped straight into this book after reading HEIR and wow. Another emotionally charged, top tier read! 5 stars! ⭐️

I am obsessed with how the author writes. I lose track of time and fall into the story so completely that it feels like I’m in the room with the characters. I swear I can picture Louis, Scott and Heath on the couch together! I cannot stress enough that this author writes such well rounded, intelligent and deep characters.

The conversations, scene setting, movement and character gestures are amazing. The pacing at which the story unfolds has made me, once again (looking at you HEIR), reach the end of the book and wish there was more!

The author has nailed finding the balance of attention to detail and time jumps, without it becoming boring or jarring. To me, this adds more meaning to the character development as the story progresses.

I teared up multiple times during this story. Louis’ grief, frustration and need for control is so heart wrenching and human. I believe many people reading would be able to connect with him whilst finding comfort in Heath & Scott’s devotion and compassion.

This book brings a sense of comfort and validation that you’re not alone. I can tell this will be a re-read for me at times where loneliness ways heavy.

Thank you Elise Rose for sharing this with the world! Now onto ECHO 💕

When i started this book i thought it was really strange to have that kind of fast pacing and to be honest i was kinda scared about the whole book only 'scratching the surface' because in some fast paced stories the backround stories of the worls and characters often seems to fall behind
I was so relieved seeing that this wasnt the case in Rookie!! Ofcourse the beginning is fast paced and it seems a little shallow at first, but to be honest that quick story developement, thats how life is sometimes...
The depth build up pretty quickly without overwhelming the reader, it comes through really natural like getting to know a new friend

You kinda have a little feeling on who is bad and good in that book but you always doubt those feelings... wich is (for me) part of good writing and a good book, not knowing for sure until its said but always having that strange feeling about someone

I was sad with the characters, happy, felt anxious for them and loved with them... thank you lots for that book <3

My heart is still recovering from the intensity of Rookie. I felt like I was in the pages. The world building, the characters, the relationships, the descriptions everything I just couldn’t get enough. Also I am Drew’s number 1 fan. Just putting that out there. I really don’t know how Elise does it but it’s another fantastic read. Five stars across the whole board.

It’s one thing to write about the characters but to write about them and bring them to life is another thing. I know for sure I’ll be thinking of this for weeks to come.

I absolutely loved The Rookie by Elise Rose! I was hesitant at first about one of the main characters being a 19-year-old detective, but once I got to know him, his maturity made sense. What he’d been through in life had shaped him, and I quickly stopped worrying about his age and became invested in his story.

I laughed, I cried, and yes, I called in sick from work to finish reading it. I could not put this book down! It’s one of those reads that takes over your day because you just have to know what happens next.

I haven't read an MMM romance before this one, but i enjoyed the dynamics! I do find the falling in love a bit rushed but still enjoyed it. It was quite the action filled romance with a hopeful ending but not fully wrapped up conclusion. I always enjoy a 3rd person POV, but the sudden switch in POV between the characters took some getting used to. Lots of action and injury were happening very quickly without any pause in the story, which made everything feel like a rushed movie but it was still an enjoyable and fun read for me

The book itself is really touching because it shows different challenges and the reality that the characters have to face. I also learned a lot of lessons from the story that I can apply to real life.
What I liked most is how emotionally memorable the journey was. It’s not just a story you finish, it’s a story that stays with you. Even after reading it, I still found myself thinking about it, and honestly, it was hard to let go.

I really enjoyed Rookie. Louis is such an easy character to root for, and I liked seeing him navigate the pressure of being the youngest and constantly underestimated. The story kept me curious about what would happen next, with a good mix of tension, emotion, and complicated relationships. A quick, engaging read for anyone who enjoys dark romance with a crime/police setting.

I actually really enjoyed this! I don’t normally read books in 3rd person so it took me a bit to get into but I am so glad I stuck it out.
The plot was fantastic, very engaging and interesting. I loved the characters and the relationship dynamic.
My only thing is the ending felt a bit abrupt I would have loved to see a bit more of a conclusion.

This book was so good it is an mmm why choose where we meet Louis, Heath and Scott who are all part of the metropolitan police. Louis's house is broken into and Heath and Scott offer him a place to stay. Let's just say Heath and Scott fall first and hard for Louis. But Louis is struggling to believe it's real. Then their love is put to the test when one bad thing after another just keeps going wrong for them.

If you are looking for work place romance, hurt comfort asthmatic representation and the past begins to haunt you then this book if for you

It was good book, however I just can’t get over the fact that AI was used to write this because it’s so obvious most of the time it hurts. 😭

I absolutely love this book. It is so hard to find MMM books. I have re read this atleast 20 times. Its always a good comfort read. I originally read it when it was on the other platform but with some of the characters name change it felt like I was reading it for the first time again.
