"The plan had been simple. Have a vacation fling, nothing serious, enjoy the moment and walk away unscathed."
Didn't work like that for me either but we aren't going to talk about that -
☀️ Vacation Fling -> Ongoing Romance ☀️ Teaching an ancient god about modernity ☀️ Found Family Vibes ☀️ Why am I crying
I went in to this expecting like...silliness of the monster romance type variety.
INSTEAD it made me cry?????
It was so good. (High key hit hone with some of my experiences recently....hence the crying).
FMC's life has fallen apart. Divorced, lost her job, daughter off at college. She's tired of living safely and logically and chooses to finally do something for herself.
She takes her dream trip to Egypt.
MMC is just....lonely. Sad. Effects of eternity.
An accidental meeting. Witty banter. Him teaching her about ancient Egypt. Her introducing him to modernity.
It's very sweet and funny, but also has so much depth. I had to pause in the middle cause I was just 😭.
Some quotes for you! Because that'll maybe speak better than my actually writing a review.
☀️ “That is the nature of forever, Jessica. Everything ends except the ending itself.”
☀️ “....You saw a god and still decided I was being a snob.” “You were being a snob.” “If you’re referring to the miniature pyramids, I was being accurate about their provenance.”
☀️ “It does matter,” I said. “Even if it ends. Maybe especially because it ends.”
☀️ "Twenty- seven ounces of coffee?” I said as we found a table. “It’s been a long day. Don't judge.” “I am always judging. It is my nature.”
(Cause he's Anubis judging souls lmao)
☀️ Everything was too fast, too loud, too much. The constant barrage of information from screens and devices drove me to the brink of insanity. I hated the traffic that clogged every road and the way mortals rushed through life, barely acknowledging the sacred in the mundane.
Sweet romance with lots of funny moments that also had an unexpected amount of depth. Themes of found family, learning to live for yourself and love your life, and taking control and picking a new direction when you're already in the middle.
Thank you Lara Reagan for sending me this advance review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
If you were one of those 80's and 90's kids that were heavily into Egyptian stuff growing up, this book will feel like coming home. It brought back so many happy childhood memories.
This was an amazing read. It was ever so cozy, but also so emotionally deep that it will hit you right in the gut. This book did not hold back on the emotions in the slightest.
We delve into so many hard things, but it is done in such a way that it felt completely natural. It flowed well, and the worldbuilding was so vivid.
We get a deep sense of losing yourself from putting others first your whole life from Jessica. It's like being set adrift in the world after everything comes crashing down. Her love and devotion for her daughter is unmatched too.
From Anubis we get both the grief and joy with how much the world has changed in a thousand years. It's loud and overwhelming, and adjusting to that is difficult but fun at the same time. Seeing modern day funerals, and how much history has changed over time is hard to deal with. To him it feels like we have lost respect for out dead, and seeing treasures in museums hurts.
One of my favorite lines in the whole book is "Your pain is not trivial because others have experienced different pain." "Your suffering Matters, Jessica." That resonated all the way down to my soul. I almost cried after reading that, especially as someone who lives with chronic pain and everything that goes along with it.
There is a ton of humor and some really top notch banter to balance out the sadness. It feels well rounded with the little funny bits sprinkled in here and there like brightly colored confetti. Jessica and Anubis are absolutely hilarious together! She is a great counter to his quiet grumpy nature too.
This is hands down a must read, and it is one I will re-read again in the future. So dang good!
I'd like to start by thanking the author for providing me with an advanced copy of this book to read. All thoughts and opinions shared are my own!
I thought this was going to be your standard monster romance with a bit of weirdness and chaos, instead what I got was a beautiful story about finding love in unexpected places, and during a mid life crisis.
Jessica's life had fallen apart when she took the plunge and booked her dream trip to Egypt. What follows is a unique meet cute with Anubis, a discussion about how Egyptian souvenirs should be from Egypt, and a whole lot of learning to live life again.
This was so sweet and had a lot of depth, as we faced the themes of learning to choose life for yourself, taking control of your fate, and accepting that you can start over and choose a new life even when it feels like you're too old.

* mature main characters * she’s a 45 yo divorcee * he’s a centuries old Egyptian god * whirlwind relationship * instalove * arguments about miniature pyramids
Ok, I think maybe the author wrote this one specifically for me? Because just like the FMC, I was OBSESSED with Egyptology in my youth. If I ever get divorced, I too will take a bucket list trip to Egypt and have relations with a handsome stranger. Fingers crossed he’s also a passionate and curious Egyptian god, summoned after a lonely eternity.
This was fun. The world building was simple, but it lacked nothing. Does that mean?Jess and Anubis are an adorable couple and their love for each other was achingly desperate. The primary conflict revolves around the issue of Jess’s mortality - she is, after all, human and destined to die. Anubis is not. How can they make it work?
When Jessica Thomas takes her holiday of a lifetime after her divorce leaves her adrift, she never expected the wonder of Egypt to excel her expectations. Lara Reagan gives us a brilliant insight into the Pyramids and the gods that the ancient Egyptians worshipped. Ancient ways meet modern, a strong woman keeps a strong man on his toes. The strength of love and family. Once you start reading this story your mind is captivated and your attention totally held. Anubis, the Egyptian God of the Dead, is the perfect foil in this journey with Jessica and I don't want to give any spoilers, so please!! read this book, especially if you love Egypt and its history. Lots of heat, romance, spice and drama to please everyone too. I was amazed and so happy I had the chance. ABSOLUTELY loved it.
“She made me remember what it felt like to exist for a purpose beyond duty. She made me feel alive.”
A sweet and beautiful love story. Jessica, the fmc is in her fourties, and in plain midlife crisis. In a whim, after a lot of wine she books her dream vacation to Egypt. In a tour to the pyramids she touched a very special artifact, that called Anubis the god of death. From the first moment she intrigues him so he decides to stay and watch her. Their story is truely beautiful even being fast paced ,with a good world building and loveable characters. I specially liked that the fmc was a mature woman and candid enough to call snob to a god.
We're talking forced proximity, vacation fling energy, protective monster boyfriend vibes, and chemistry that starts simmering immediately. The FMC was funny, relatable, and easy to root for, while the Anubis MMC balanced intimidating energy with possessive devotion and surprising softness toward her. Their banter made the tension fun, and every romantic scene felt charged with anticipation. Perfect for readers who love mythology-inspired monsters, touch-her-and-die energy, emotionally soft alpha MMCs, and a steamy HEA.
Solid E for effort but it's not really Anubis. The MMC is technically Anubis but stays in his glamour. The spice is barely a single pepper. It just glazed over most of the spicy scenes. The only thing that I really enjoyed was the story. It was very well written. Just minus anything resembling spice or actual Anubis.
This was such an amazing and sweet book. I loved everything about it, especially how sweet and loving Anubis is with Jessica. Although I did tear up a few times but it was so worth it. I highly recommend this book!
I wasn't sure what to expect but I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It left me with a happy satisfied HEA. I will definitely read more from Ms Lara Reagan. It was a perfect ending for my day and yes I read it in one sitting.
