No way this story ends here—I need more Augustine!!
Diana and Augustine together were perfection: her as the animal mage, him cool, controlled, and lethal. Honestly? Both were deadly ♡
This novella was extremely entertaining, as always, and delivered in every way. I loved seeing Arabella as part of the story and where her path might lead. She needs a little more time before carrying her own books, but I can already see it coming—and I’ll be first in line.

So lovely to dip back into the world of Primes and Houses and the Baylors’ menagerie of found family, even for just a moment.
Beast Business went by quick. A cute, simple action story with a small romance subplot. Diana Harrison comes to Augustine Montgomery and asks for his help recovering an animal companion that was stolen from her family. They share a mutual attraction that blossoms, kind of, and stage a rescue. That’s about it.
My main gripe has to do with Diana’s character:
Diana should have been weirder! I wanted Diana to be weirder. She does have animalistic moments, but those mostly seem to serve to awaken new kinks in Augustine.
Why not make her strange and unsociable (autistic, even) if that’s what you’ve established animal mages are like? Seems weak to decide that her magic has specific drawbacks but then not force your MCs to deal with the drawbacks.
On a better note, this novella has only strengthened my need for an Arabella trilogy. Give it to me now please :)

Common wisdom held that animal mages didn’t understand human emotions. They formed bonds with animals through the power of their magic, and that process fundamentally altered their thinking, stunting their emotional development and making their interactions with other people difficult.
Interacting with Cornelius, Diana’s brother, had convinced Augustine that there were exceptions to that rule. Apparently, Diana was cut from the same cloth.

This novella was almost cruel in that it was so short and I want so much more of the characters. The story is well written and I know it took a lot of work and I do appreciate it so much, but I want more and always will. Augustine has more to say and so does Diana. I cannot wait to learn more about the animal magic too. Someone stole something from House Harrison and Diana goes to Augustine for help. But as they work together the sparks between them cannot help but fly.

Diana and Augustine’s novella
A very enjoyable, short novella where Diana, Head of House Harrison, and Augustine, Head of House Montgomery, team up to rescue a gorgeous “kitten” (more like an arcane version of a blue tiger). What I enjoyed most was diving more into the abilities of animal and illusion mages, Diana and Augustine respectively. Turns out there is a lot more to it than illusions and bonds to animals. We also finally find out what Augustine really looks like behind his illusion – not that different after all, but with a scar. Another handsome man.
Arabella’s short story
This is a gift for everyone who has been asking for an Arabella novel. It’s only a glimpse, but it was a great glimpse at her and her character. Now I want that novel (or better yet: a trilogy) all the more.

I had already read “A Misunderstanding” and “A Cool Aunt” on Ilona’s website so I didn’t reread them.
“Marty” was a cute story in Matilda’s point of view. (Young daughter of Cornelius Harrison, Diana’s brother.) What can I say? I really want to be an animal mage.
“Inn Talks” are fun little interviews conducted by Dina (from the Innkeeper Chronicles) and George (from The Edge and Innkeeper), one with Arabella, the other with Augustine. If I remember correctly, both were part of the Andrews’ newsletters.

Book 4 of the 2026 Read Your Hoard Challenge
I was delighted when this book was delivered today and I dropped everything in order to read it. I'll probably read it again before I go back to business as usual.
The Book Devouring Horde loves Augustine Montgomery and has been waiting p*tiently for this novella. It was great fun to learn more about illusion mages like Augustine and animal mages like Diana Harrison. Both magic branches are secretive about their abilities, so Augustine and Diana try to give answers that don't reveal too much. Readers, however, are privy to their thoughts.
We also get a glimpse of the relationship between Augustine and Arabella Baylor. Augustine and Nevada Baylor have swapped siblings to provide internship experience. At the end of the book, House Andrews has included the short fiction about Arabella previously published on their blog. Which is nice, but more importantly, they have also written a short piece that intersects with the primary novella. They know what we like.
Now, I must confess, I thought this novella would be a one and done affair. After all, the Andrews have so many series underway and their Horde is always ready to Devour more. At the end there is enough unfinished business to justify another volume. Of course I will be delighted to read it if or when they care to write it. I am nothing if not chalant.

Ilona Andrews is an autobuy for me, and is one of the very few authors that I will pay full price for on release day. However, Beast Business wasn't exactly what I was expecting.
The novella with Augustine is actually only a little more than half the book, and it felt rushed. I wanted way more relationship development. However, I'll never be mad at an illusion prime showing his magic and seeing him be more vulnerable was really all I needed to be satisfied.
The rest of the book was short stories with the rest of the characters, and I adored those. It made me so incredibly hungry for more Hidden Legacy content that I immediately started a re-read of the entire series. So take that for what it's worth.
Beast Business is worth buying but just make sure you know exactly what you are getting.

I really enjoyed this book and the actual story itself was excellent. As always, Ilona Andrews’ writing continues to be sharp, engaging, and easy to sink into. I loved getting more time with Diana, and a deeper dive on Augustine and his magic. Even though Diana wasn’t a new character to the series, she felt fresh here, and I genuinely enjoyed getting to know her more deeply.
That said, my biggest issue with this book is simply that it was too short. The ending felt abrupt and incomplete, and I finished it wanting significantly more time with these characters. The Diana and Augustine storyline had so much potential, and I couldn’t help feeling disappointed that we didn’t get to see it explored further.
I was also a bit confused by the inclusion of the blog stories in the book. I understand why it’s nice to have them preserved in print, but structurally they felt out of place. Personally, I would have preferred that space be used to expand the main narrative instead …especially given how quickly the core story wrapped up.
All that said, I still really enjoyed this book. The writing was strong, the characters were compelling, and the story itself was genuinely fun to read. I love this universe and this series, and I’ll happily take any spinoff content I can get. I just wish there had been more of it.

It's been a while since we have been in this alternate version of Houston, Texas, but I'm happy to report that the authors've still got it and coming back was like coming home - even if it was just for a very short while.
Augustine Montgomery (the shapeshifter who used to own Baylor Investigations) and Diana Harrison (sister of Cornelius who can talk to animals) are the MCs in this one.
As some might recall, Cornelius bonded with a creature that was summoned from another realm: Zeus.
As it turns out, there has been another creature from the same realm that Cornelius and his sister saved: Celeste.
No, the names are not a coincidence; yes, the joke about that was really very funny; and yes, the two mated and had a little adorable - most improtantly though HILARIOUS cub: Kitty.
What any of this "beast business" has to do with the biggest and most successful PI firm in Houston and why the boss (Augustine) is taking the case himself, I shall not spoiler. ;P
Let's just say that sparks flew in a very low-key (at the beginning) way and I kinda liked it!
As far as I know, the original plan for this series was for each Baylor sister to have her own trilogy. Well, we had Nevada's (awesome) and we had Catalina's (very good but not quite as awesome IMO) - but not Arabella's. I'm pretty sure this and the little teasers (you can't even call them short stories) we had thus far are preparing us for just that.
The writing was once again funny and fast-paced with the occasional cuteness (Matilda) thrown into the mix, the worldbuilding as wonderfully life-like and intricate as before, and the characters are old friends (and enemies) by now. So like I said: it's like coming home. Hopefully, we won't have to wait too long for Arabella's first novel to drop.

LOVED getting back into the Hidden Legacy world! I have always been intrigued by Alexander Montgomery, and Diana Harrison, while a very minor character in the overall series, left an impression on every page she landed on. So, getting a story focusing on these two very enigmatic characters is awesome! Just a note of warning, however. Sadly, the story ends at the 61% mark and wasn’t completely resolved. Hopefully that means more to come?
The rest of the book consists of snippets focusing on Arabella Baylor, the youngest of the Baylor family. Now SHE is a favorite of mine and I hope, hope, HOPE, we get to see her own trilogy soon!

I didn't know I needed an Augustine novella in my life, but I sure enjoyed it!
It's funny how he went from being a bad guy in the first Hidden Legacy book to a reluctant ally and even friend in the subsequent books. This novella explains some of the reasons behind the things he did. And you know what? I wouldn't mind reading more about him.
Arabella's short story was an absolute gem. I laughted outloud a few times while reading about how she dealt with the whole missing teen situation. Now I really want that Arabella trilogy.
Great entry into the Hidden Legacy series.

4.5 More than just a pretty face Stars
Augustine has been a favorite side character of mine since we learned he wasn’t just a man that could put on a pretty face. As Rogan’s best friend from college I knew that there had to be a little more to his backstory and Beast Business is a great set up to flesh out Augustine as a leading character and give the reader some details of his past.
Diana Harrison wasn’t someone I really thought of in the other books. She was Cornelius’s estranged sister and that was about it. Getting to spend some page time with her was eye opening not only to Cornelius’s childhood but also to some of the other concepts of an animal mages magic. I really enjoyed the moments that we got to explore with both characters.
This was such a great set up for a full-length story with them. There is great chemistry between them and while probably not magically compatible it seems that they are really going to be meant for each other in some way we only got glimpses of here. Teamed up Augustine and Diana could definitely compete with some of the other power couples we have already read about. I look forward to possibly meeting some of Augustine’s family and see how the romance between them is going to happen. It is pretty inevitable.

Arabella is such a fun character. She is the wild one, the one most likely to set loose and getting some glimpses of her magic and how she is learning to harness just adds to the depth of her character. She might play flighty but she is really very smart and knows exactly how to press everyone’s buttons. I love that she has decided that she wants Augustine to be her mentor and is working on way to convince him that he wants to mentor her.
I liked her POV and seeing how she decided to make friends with someone you wouldn’t normally think she would try to befriend based of the house she was in. But after they talked it made perfect sense. I could see how they both had quite a bit in common. I look forward to seeing what kind of trouble they are going to get in together.
MATILDA!!! I love that kid. She is such a great character and her page time is full of cuteness. She is adored by the Baylor family and see how sisterly she and Arabella are was fun. I laughed that she has taken to spying on the people she cares about. She is going to be a great addition to the PI firm when she gets older.

First, I need him to write me a letter of recommendation for Rice, because I know that’s the only way I can get in. But it’s more than that. That dude is a fucking shark. He knows everything about everyone. He’s like a surgeon when it comes to House politics. He is in. I want him to teach me how to be like him.

I am so ready for the next one…
It’s sometimes hard to get back into a series after an extended break – so not the case with Hidden Legacy. Every tiny detail regarding Arabella reminded me of my fierce passion for the series, and I truly cannot wait to read more about her in her forthcoming trilogy. She’s such an interesting character! And don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved spending time with each sister so far, but Arabella feels different somehow. More relatable. Likable in a flawed character kind of way. And I am really excited to see what they are going to do with her story arc because she’s starting with a baseline of not being able to measure up to her older sisters, but she also has this fierce determination that doesn’t seem to rely on external validation… I think it’s going to be good.
So I realize I’ve overlooked the technical selling point of the novella: the first hundred pages (Beast Business) which only includes Arabella as a peripheral character. Focusing instead Augustine and Diana – the leaders of two powerful houses, who I imagine will play pivotal roles in the upcoming trilogy. And even though it wasn’t my personal highlight of the read, it was still magic-filled and action-packed. After reading the short stories contained in the back of the book, I realize that Augustine is a character we’ve seen before during various conflicts in the main series, but it has been so long since I read it that he really didn’t leave the lasting impression. So I’m grateful for the refresher here, and getting to know more about his magic and the magic of his ally/presumably counterpart Diana. It also set the stage for the culture of Arabella’s story with Augustine is her mentor. The authors were very, very clear to imply that Augustine is in no way going to be a potential love interest.
And then we get another short story from Arabella’s perspective during the same timeframe. This is the piece of work that has me so excited! I love how Arabella presented in the story as a PI/Fixer type character, who is building her own career based on her ability to accurately psychoanalyze people and contain her own rather hostile magics during the process. I thought it was phenomenal how well she related to the other characters in the story, and how completely I felt the POV immersion into her character (down to unique mannerisms and careful word choices). She’s the type of character who inspires likability from the reader based on the fact that she can inspire likability with the other characters. It’s awesome!
And beyond that are some short stories that have been published before on the authors’ website, most of which I’m pretty sure I’ve read previously. Recommendations: I went into this book thinking I was getting a 200 page Novella. Then it ended at 120 pages and I felt a little swindled… until I read all the good stuff that came behind it. Just go in knowing that this is a collection of pieces and not one long narrative. Also, if you haven’t read the series, please give it a try – it is awesome! There is romance involved as a secondary component, but this is not a romance-heavy series despite what the covers would have you think. It’s a perfect balance of all the elements.

It’s sometimes hard to get back into a series after an extended break – so not the case with Hidden Legacy. Every tiny detail regarding Arabella reminded me of my fierce passion for the series, and I truly cannot wait to read more about her in her forthcoming trilogy. She’s such an interesting character! And don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved spending time with each sister so far, but Arabella feels different somehow. More relatable. Likable in a flawed character kind of way. And I am really excited to see what they are going to do with her story arc because she’s starting with a baseline of not being able to measure up to her older sisters, but she also has this fierce determination that doesn’t seem to rely on external validation… I think it’s going to be good.
So I realize I’ve overlooked the technical selling point of the novella: the first hundred pages (Beast Business) which only includes Arabella as a peripheral character. Focusing instead Augustine and Diana – the leaders of two powerful houses, who I imagine will play pivotal roles in the upcoming trilogy. And even though it wasn’t my personal highlight of the read, it was still magic-filled and action-packed. After reading the short stories contained in the back of the book, I realize that Augustine is a character we’ve seen before during various conflicts in the main series, but it has been so long since I read it that he really didn’t leave the lasting impression. So I’m grateful for the refresher here, and getting to know more about his magic and the magic of his ally/presumably counterpart Diana. It also set the stage for the culture of Arabella’s story with Augustine is her mentor. The authors were very, very clear to imply that Augustine is in no way going to be a potential love interest.
And then we get another short story from Arabella’s perspective during the same timeframe. This is the piece of work that has me so excited! I love how Arabella presented in the story as a PI/Fixer type character, who is building her own career based on her ability to accurately psychoanalyze people and contain her own rather hostile magics during the process. I thought it was phenomenal how well she related to the other characters in the story, and how completely I felt the POV immersion into her character (down to unique mannerisms and careful word choices). She’s the type of character who inspires likability from the reader based on the fact that she can inspire likability with the other characters. It’s awesome!
And beyond that are some short stories that have been published before on the authors’ website, most of which I’m pretty sure I’ve read previously. A fabulous novella plus multiple, wonderful Arabella vignettes
This book is a marvelous gift for fans of Ilona Andrews in general and the Hidden Legacy urban fantasy series in specific. The main novella, Beast Business, offers a terrific romance between two highly sympathetic MCs. They are equally magically powerful and make a dynamic team as they pursue an enormously powerful, evil villain, who has kidnapped an adorable, alien baby kitty.
As an additional treat, there are multiple Arabella vignettes gathered together in one place which first appeared as separate free offerings on the authors' website.
In short, this book was phenomenal all the way through. I will snap up the audiobook the minute it's released, and I eagerly anticipate the eventual GraphicAudio full-cast production as well.

Disappointing. I’ve waited for Augustine’s book for years & we got a rushed instalove half baked novella that seems written to shut up long term readers & a cash grab. This is now the 6th unfinished story series they have started & when the authors get called out on it they get an attitude & lash out at readers says their 7 figure deal is a priority & this is all they can manage. They used to write so much better than what they’ve been releasing & as someone who has been reading & supporting them for 15 years it is frustrating & disappointing.

I do not often rate novella’s five stars; however, I LOVED this book. We learn so much about Augustine and his magic in this book. We knew Cornelius and Matilda are special but we discover how much they outclass other animal mages in this book. We also learn more about the Harrison family and how their magic actually works. I wish the story was longer. I also wish Andrews will write more about Augustine and Diana. This is my all time favorite series and I missed getting new stories in this world. I miss the Baylor’s and want more stories about Nevada and Rogan, Catalina and Alessandro, Arabella, Bern and Runa, and Leon.

In true BDH fashion, the book was devoured in about 2 hours....and now I want more! There is so much information and so many intriguing things that need follow up!

60% of the story is a novella dedicated to Augustine and Diana, an interesting tell and straight the pipeline type in the romantic department. It was interesting to be in the head of a powerful animal mage. Cornelius and Matilda have always been favorites of mine and I always wanted more stories with Cornelius. Now I'm intrigued by the House brother. Anyway, Augustine has always had massive fans, while I never cared much about him either way, but he's interesting enough and this story - while not strong in mystery - was a fun adventure.
After the novella ends we get a few short stories, including a new one with Arabella told in same story and timeline conclusion, and some following ones previously shared for free on the author's website.
I'm really hoping all this Arabella focus soon means Arabella three trilogy full length stories. Pretty please?

I liked it, but I was expecting (and hoping for) more.
I started the Hidden Legacy series hating Augustine, and I ended up loving him. I was very excited to get a novella about him, especially since we get to see more about his powers and how they work. We also get a little more backstory, and I am really hoping for a spinoff series about Arabella that will also feature him, since they seem to work well together.
I find it interesting to have some chapters from Diana’s point of view. It showed how animal mages can adopt animal traits, how they can “shut down” their human side, and how they can rely more on their instincts when they need to. I found it super interesting because that is not something we saw with Cornelius and Matilda.
The plot was not bad, but I often struggle to get engaged in a novella, due to its short length. But that’s a “me” issue, I guess. Still, I feel that the purpose of this novella was to show us Augustine and Diana working together, more than it was about having a complex plot, which I do not mind, except that the “romance” (if it can be called that) developing between them feels more like an insta-love than the layered relationship I was hoping for. The ending also felt abrupt, and I was hoping for a better closure, instead of high emotions, a hint of “fated mates”, and voilà, it’s over.
While I liked reading about Augustine and Diana, I can’t say I felt much chemistry between them. Diana seems to be attracted by Augustine, mostly because her animal instincts (which are more developed than an average human’s) are telling her that he is “her special one” for her. Augustine is intrigued by her and attracted to her physically, but I can’t say I felt a deeper connection between them. I was hoping for more.
The last part, “Arabella saves the day”, was so cool! It shows how much Arabella has matured since the beginning of the series, and how ruthless she is when it comes to investigating. I am repeating myself, but I am hoping so hard for a spinoff about her. First of all, because I like her, but also (maybe mostly), because I don’t tire of reading about the Baylor family. They are just so cute and wholesome.
So, when is Arabella’s book coming out?

If this was just a cover rating, it would be five stars. Wow. Stunning. It's even more incredible considering this author duo is known for their.. well, not so great luck with covers. Can we get a Kate Daniels do-over in this style? Would buy. Anywho.
I think I will probably like this a little more when I reread it post-Hidden Legacy series reread — which I plan to do when all the Graphic Audio editions are out. Because while I remember Augustine, and while I remember Diana’s brother, it’s just that little bit removed to make me not quite as invested in this pairing as I could be. But the reason why they band together? (cue Monsters Inc. Boo voice) KITTY. A kidnapped blue magical tiger cub. My heart. And on the way to rescue said kitten, battles are fought which show just how powerful these two Primes are; not only that but they are both holding back some secrets around the extent of their powers (as one does) but they unbend enough, allow themselves to be vulnerable enough, to reveal some of those hidden talents. Along with some feelings..
And then it just ends.
But as promised we do get a little bit of an Arabella cameo, followed by her version of events that lead to said cameo, so hope is not lost, folks! We really might be seeing the continuation of this series via Arabella soon. Or, well, at least it’s no longer fully out of the realm of possibility.

This seems like a teaser for a future book where we.see.Augustine and Diana deal with their burgeoning relationship. Obviously there are serious hurdles.to be overcome both of them being House Primes of different talents. Diana's talent involves animals while Augustine's skills lie in illusions so match between the two would not be acceptable by either family. But, the pull both of them feel towards each other is strong so we will have to.wait and.see.how it all turns out. Then we have a few.sweet and.fun short stories at the end. They are all.great reads my favourite being the one.where.Nevada gives birth........ I much say it's always a pleasure.to return to this magical world I love every one.of the Baylor family and their friends...............

This was an okay installment for me. After such a long wait for more from this series, it was a little anti-climatic. Here's a bit of what I liked and what I felt underwhelmed by.

Seeing these characters who I barely remember as MCs
The growing interest I felt for Diana and Augustine
The Tigers
The illusions
What I wanted more of or felt underwhelmed by:
The convoluted 'where isss this going'
Where is Arabella, I thought she was going to be in this
The lack of follow through on the chemistry

About 60% of this is the actual story. Then Arabella’s pov. Then relevant shorts that were previously on the website. So good of course. I love when we get to see the intricacies of the different magics.

I loved getting back to this world, learning a bit more about Augustine. I especially loved getting more on Arabella. As much as I enjoyed this book, this was such a tease with Arabella. We need her book!!!

I am truly conflicted on how to rate this book. I am a big fan of Ilona Andrews. The first three books in the Hidden Legacy series, Nevada's trilogy, are god-tier to me. Nevada and Connor, both individually and as a couple, have a permanent place in my heart. Beast Business showcases so much of what Ilona Andrews does best. The story itself—or at least the first 90%—was fantastic. As always, the writing was sharp and engaging, the character work compelling, and the world-building second to none.
Augustine has long been one of my favorite side characters, so I loved getting more insight into his backstory and illusion magic. I’d liked Diana well enough in the main series but hadn’t thought too deeply about her until now. In this novella, she felt fresh and fully realized, and I really enjoyed getting to know her better.
However, the issue with this being a novella was just that—it's a novella, and thus too short and needed room to breathe. I was initially enjoying Augustine and Diana’s relationship arc, but the near-death experience at the end rushed their dynamic far too much. I get it—heightened emotions, imminent danger, feelings spilling out—but it veered uncomfortably close to instalove and “fated mates” territory. They’d barely spent any meaningful time together before these 24 hours, and Diana just "knowing" Augustine was her “special one” because of her animal instincts didn’t fully convince me. Given that both are Primes, Heads of their Houses, and wield incompatible magic, a slow-burn romance stretched over multiple books would have been absolutely delicious. I genuinely mourn what could have been.
I would have accepted the accelerated timeline if the novella had provided a sense of closure, but the ending felt abrupt and incomplete. We don’t get a real emotional resolution—or even a kiss! Yes, we know Augustine and Diana end up together in the main series (and even then, it’s barely a glimpse), but the how is left entirely unexplored. I firmly believe that novellas should still offer a complete, satisfying arc, yet I finished Beast Business with more questions than answers. It felt like being edged and then left with blue balls.
To make matters worse, Augustine and Diana’s story wraps up at just 120 pages, or 62% of the novella, which is even shorter than I’d anticipated. I knew the blog stories would be included, but I hadn’t realized how much of the total page count they’d take up. I do love the blog stories and appreciate having them in print, but their inclusion felt jarring and structurally awkward. Those ~80 pages would have been far better spent expanding the main narrative instead. Another missed opportunity.
Adding salt to the wound, Ilona Andrews stated on their blog that there are currently no plans to continue Augustine and Diana’s story:
I understand that Hidden Legacy stands as a completed series and that the authors have other projects and contractual obligations. Still, it’s hard not to feel disappointed. I would’ve been perfectly fine with Beast Business remaining a novella if we’d gotten a complete arc for Augustine and Diana or at least some assurance that their story would be continued. Instead, we’re left with the possibility that we may never get more of them, or if we do, not for many, many, many years.
Ultimately, having my biggest complaint be that the book was too short and left me wanting more isn’t the worst criticism. It’s a testament to how engaging the characters and world are that I immediately wanted more time with them.
