Callan McWard is a hitman with a conscience. He only accepts contracts to eliminate the worst of the worst and sticks to that code with unwavering conviction. He has a reputation for keeping a crime scene as clean as his conscience. The only comforts he allows himself are a cat named Beckett and the quiet certainty that he's nothing like the men he eliminates.
Tricia Langley, police officer and daughter of a Florida kingpin, recognizes Callan as a man she can use. Callan mistakes her interest for affection, and under her influence, the clinical precision that kept him alive begins to fail.
During a hit in New York, the unthinkable happens: Callan loses control of the room. A surgical strike turns into a violent mess, leaving behind a witness and a trail. For the first time in his career, the ghost has left a trace.
Tricia isn't looking for a way out of her father's criminal empire like she led Callan to believe. She's looking for the perfect tool to help her seize the throne.
Warren is an accountant turned author who writes fiction about the quiet weight of secrets and the violence we do in the name of love, justice, or survival. Based in Edmonton, Alberta, he shares his home with four feline freeloaders and a stack of notebooks full of half-truths and character sketches.
A long time reader of psychology and human behavior, Warren is drawn to characters who live in the gray—men who kill for what they believe is right, women who see too much and trust too little. In Getting Close, his debut noir thriller, he explores themes of emotional repression, moral ambiguity, and the cost of getting close to someone when your past has blood on it.
He started writing as a way to understand people—why we stay silent, why we push people away, and what it really takes to change. He still doesn’t have all the answers, but the stories keep him asking better questions.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers with heart, edge, and a few claw marks, Warren invites you to follow his work, reach out, and stay a while. Just don’t expect the cat to move.
Finished ✅ So, Warren Flynn - Author has done something a bit different with his writing. I’m not going to give too much away, as you should add it to your TBR list. Callan, the main character and assassin, is starting to feel pulled from two different ends of his life. I’m not going to reveal anything, but the writing has many layers in it, giving us an insight to all the characters involved, and without rushing each one. The reason becomes clearer as the layers peel away, leaving you to understand why the characters were, the way they were! It’s a great read, always moving forward, keeping your mind alert for how it’s going to resolve itself. Who can you trust???? Well done 👏 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
We love a good dark story with a morally grey main character that has questionable guidelines and a loveable cat sidekick!! That’s what you’re getting here!! A noir thriller that goes from dark to shades of grey (pun intended because there’s spice) all because he let himself start to care about the people around him. We watch the masterful assassin start to unravel in the best way possible!! A must read if you like edgy masculine characters with a soft side for feline friends!!

The book started out as if Callan just so happened bumped into love. The found out she was a detective. But the detective from what I’ve gathered knew who Callan was and he was a hit man that she finally came clean and wanted to end her father. But then Tricia turned on Callan and Callan and Ellen ran away to Canada. In my opinion the book landed on a cliff hanger.
Callan and Beckett's relationship delivers a twist on a thriller genre that feels genuinely fresh. This book is something far more layered and psychologically engaging with complexity and sharp emotional undercurrents that keep you constantly reassessing motives and loyalties. Rather than relying solely on shock value, the story leans into the physiological tension and character driven suspense. If you are looking for a thriller that offers a unique character dynamic this is a read for you....looking forward to reading more books from this author!
Ever read a novel that you couldn’t put down until you finished it? Phone calls… muted. Emails… ignored. Knocks on door… “Come back later!”
“Getting Close” is that kind of novel. In January 2026, Warren Flynn entered the realm of psychological thrillers with this debut.
338 pages of action, suspense, modern day romance and intense psychological drama. And the metaphors! Oh my! A book a poet can fall in love with!
Do you like cats? You won’t want to skip Chapter 52! I won’t spoil it for you by sharing what it’s about… Just don’t miss it!
For the altruists among us, page 296 holds a gem: “Isabelle didn’t respond right away. When she did, her voice was soft but clear. ‘I always try to leave the world better than I found it.’”
Firstly, thank you to Warren Flynn for the complimentary copy. This review is being left voluntarily and all opinions are my own.
This was an interesting concept. We meet Callan, a hitman who only takes jobs for marks he deems as the lowest of the low. His marks often include those involved in child abuse or trafficking. His character perfectly blurs the lines between right and wrong.
He meets a woman who turns out to be a police detective and suddenly all his discipline goes out the window. He is powerless to her charms, even making Callan question if he could leave his morally-grey life behind and live within the confines of the law.
This story is suspenseful in parts, with Warren making you feel constantly on edge.
One thing I dislike in a book is an abrupt/open ending. I need closure and to round off that story, unless there are more books to come in the series. The ending was a bit too open for my liking.
This would not be my usual genre of thriller, but I know that any readers who enjoy this type of book will really enjoy this one.
If you're looking for a thrilling read, look no further.
Flynn's writing style kept me enraptured, gripping my seat and eager to turn each page as the reader follows killer-for-hire Callan as he navigates love, friendship, family and not getting caught.
Ramping up from the very first page with a kill, Flynn leaves nothing to the imagination as he serves up justice, takes names and changes them and then, of course, runs out of gas. Well, Callan's rental runs out of gas, he doesn't.
When stopping for gas he tries to make small talk with a woman pumping gas near by and the story heats up as he learns she is, on the dark web at least, his mortal enemy. While he debates calling her, life intervenes once again, and then so does death, as he navigates his way in Miami, Winnipeg, and wherever the job sends him.
This was fast-paced, intriguing, and just enough suspense plus romance to keep me guessing, my heart beating and my fingers turning the pages.
A gripping noir thriller with dark atmosphere, sharp twists and an adorable fluffy feline companion that added the perfect touch of charm to the story!
