This little book is all kinds of crazysauce. It’s ridiculous and completely OTT, but I was in the mood for that.
Lydia Cantrell is possibly the most sheltered young woman ever. She lives in a small Southern town. She’s the church secretary and has fallen off in love with the minister, Devon Malone. While at a church conference in Atlanta, Lydia goes to Pastor Dev’s room (that’s what she calls him), and finds a dead body. She won’t believe Pastor Dev killed him, by its obvious he knows more about it than he should.
So Pastor Dev says they have to leave, immediately, that someone is trying to kill him. Eventually he explains that he used to be a member of a clandestine Christian organization called CHAIM which rescues Christians in trouble all over the world.
So they go on the run to get away from the killers, taking MARTA out of Atlanta where he buys a pickup and drives them to a safe house in New Orleans. Someone tries to kill Lydia by spiking her lotion with a pesticide. Then on to Texas where the butler starts to smother her with a pillow. Then they fly to Colorado, but are shot at as soon as they land.
Lydia loses some -but only some - of her naïveté by the time they get back home. Of course Pastor Dev has fallen in love (or discovers he has loved) Lydia. Sweet declaration and proposal.
Although this was well written, I don't think the story itself was that believable. This was an easy to read story for anyone looking for a quick read.
I loved the uniqueness of the plot line in Secret Agent Minister. It's not one that's been overplayed or overdone in Love Inspired Suspense stories. In fact, I've never read a book where a minister is a secret agent! When I spotted this at a yard sale, I snatched it up based solely on the title. And the first line sealed it for me "Someone was going to have to explain about the dead body in the bathtub. "
Yep, it had me running for my life right along with Lydia & Pastor Dev as they dodge danger around every corner. Poor Lydia, she was a complete innocent in all of this and I can't imagine her shock at seeing the dead man or learning that Dev had a killer on his trail. Wouldn't that throw anyone off course? It would me for certain! Then my mind tried to untangle the mystery of who was behind it all in a game where you don't or can't trust anyone, not even your closest friend. Not until the very thrilling end that seemed to spin out of control right before my eyes. Whew, what a ride!
I loved this, and knew it would be fun one right from the start. I'm glad it proved to be just what I expected and some things I didn't! A great deviation from the overly done plot lines you often find in books. Some would say this is unrealistic, but that's why I read fiction, to escape the real world!
The first sentence of this book follows: "Someone was going to have to explain about the dead body in the bathtub." If you think that is a good opening sentence and if you like the heroine saying cutesy things like "the VEPs" (Very Evil People) and "the VBGs" (Very Bad Guys) and if you like ridiculous plots, you might possibly like this book.
I really enjoyed this book, but I’m a sucker for damsel in distress. The only thing that irritated me is that she kept referring to him as “Pastor Dev” even after they kissed etc. Weird. No one does that.
When this book started out with a dead body in the shower, and the church secretary in a motel room with her minister, I knew this was going to be a good book. Sharing a kiss in the shower, jumping out of a plane together, and dodging bullets all added to the great suspense. Everything was innocent on the part of the minister and his secretary, amazingly.
The author did a great job in keeping my interest. I never knew what was going to happen next. Though some stuff was a bit unbelievable and over the top, I feel the author did what she started out to do - capture my interest and keep it going until the final page.
The romance was sweet. A few stolen kisses here and there didn't take away from the suspense and romantic tension of the story. The only thing that got on my nerves was Lydia's insistence on saying 'Pastor Dev..."
There are five books that have to do with the CHAIMs men: Secret Agent Minister Heart of the Night Code of Honor Assignment: Bodyguard The Soldier's Mission
Devon Malone is a handsome, quiet, reserved minister. He is afraid to give his heart away, after all, he has seen horrible things in his past and he has been apart of them. He is a retired Christian secret agent and someone is out to get him.
Lydia Cantrell is the church's secretary and has been in love with Dev for a while now, but no one knows. Because of circumstances, both their lives are in danger and they go on the run. This heroine whines all throughout the book and I wanted to tape her mouth shut and shake her until her teeth rattled. I can see a little whining due to the circumstances but continual, beginning to end, was more than I can take. That is minus 1-star.
The fact that this storyline is so unrealistic and unbelievable for me, that is minus another 1-star.
I am undecided as to whether I recommend this book or not. It would depend on your taste because I see others really liked it.
This story was a little slow and disjointed in the beginning and I struggled a bit for the first quarter of the book, but then it definitely got better and more intriguing.
The main female character got on my nerves in the beginning and the storyline of a secret Christian spy agency was a tad far-fetched. That said, I still enjoyed this book and was pleasantly surprised with some of the plot developments that I didn't see coming.
It's definitely an easy read, but also enjoyable and overall well-written.
the book was good, i'll admit. had some great hold-your-breath suspense, w/ lots of adventure. but ...
for some reason, i just kept finding it hard to get around the whole concept of "CHAIM", and a minister being an ex-Christian-secret agent! hence, only 4 stars versus 5
I love this stroy of romance, mayhem, mystery, drama, and adventure. Lenora did an excellent job by adding suspense and action into her Christian Fiction Romance novel. It shows us that Christian stories doesn't have to be just surrounding the church.
