France, 1312. Queen Isabella is a new mother. Her baby boy secures not only her ill-starred marriage but her own precarious future. And yet, she is terrified. A generational curse hangs over her family. Can she free herself and her child from it?
London, 1865. The corridors of Bedlam Lunatic Asylum move like white serpents around Lois. The women here are all the same—more mad than when they entered its doors. But if sin is the cause of her illness, and her memories are the manifestations of insanity, then who is the little boy who calls her Mama?
Brittany, 2026. Artist Emma is preparing for her wedding in the French countryside, where she and her fiancé have rented a beautiful old castle for the occasion. She hopes the event will help her connect with her sixteen-year-old daughter, Ivy, who has never understood the demons that drive her mother’s life and fuel her art. But soon the echoes of her past threaten to derail not only the wedding but everything she holds dear.
The House of Cursed Daughters knits together seven centuries and three unforgettable heroines as it explores female power and the way it can forge bright pathways through indescribable darkness.

I simply have no words good enough to do this book justice. CJ Cooke has done it again! Her writing is absolutely beautiful and I immediately felt transported into each of these women’s storylines. I was hooked from the first page and haven’t stopped thinking about it since I finished it last week. An absolutely stunning read and an easy 5⭐️ rating from me

"Rainy nights, ancient curses and this haunted heart of mine." (Ann Marie Sleazer)
C.J. Cooke must have a bubbling cauldron filled with those ancient curses just waiting to pour droplets on her next character. And she does a spectacular job in The House of Cursed Daughters. So lean your broom against the wall and definitely partake in this latest offering by one outstanding author.
Cooke splays out the character cards across the centuries. We'll meet Emma in 2026 who is a talented artist elbowing next to her pending art exhibit and a wedding to plan. At forty-six, this is her second time around. She and her sixteen year old daughter, Ivy, have been estranged. Ivy went to live with her father when she was only nine and hasn't seen much of Emma during those years. A lot of fence mending to do.
Cooke heightens her storytelling with the character of Isabella of England. Born in France to her parents King Philip and Queen Jeanne, Isabella is promised in marriage to Edward II of England in 1312. She's but twelve years old and Edward is twenty-four. Edward shows no interest in his young bride. But Isabella will grow into her name of She-Wolf of England during the coming years. Keep your eyes on Isabella.
The story then arcs toward Clara in 1865. Clara wakes to the horror of becoming an inmate in the renowned Bedlam Lunatic Asylum. She has no memory of how she got there or the years prior. But little memory chips will loosen in time.
The House of Cursed Daughters is a treasure chest of strong-willed, dynamic women through the centuries. And laid upon them is a diabolical curse cast upon Isabella when she was just nine years old. It will cling to Isabella and all the females in her lineage to come. The story of Isabella in the 14th century is at the core of this stellar novel. This is where Cooke shines. I could have just crouched next to Isabella and remained there. (You'll find that Isabella and Edward II are true historical figures.) Isabella's story is the greatest chunk of this novel and for good reason.
In addition, the story centered in the Bedlam Lunatic Asylum in 1865 was outstanding. Cooke gives us a panoramic view of how women were cast into its deplorable conditions and treated as subhumans. The story of Clara was heart-wrenching.
Now Emma was a completely different cog in the wheel. Cooke showcases these strong-willed women and Emma certainly did not live up to those expectations. Emma is like a loose string interfering with the flow. Although a talented artist, she is reticent to make decisions or express her needs and desires. But the story pivots in a different direction encompassing Emma. I'm curious as to why Cooke created her as initially so weak. Emma got on my nerves. Her daughter, Ivy, was the far more interesting character here.
The House of Cursed Daughters is an emotionally grabbing, character-driven novel of the highest standards. (Sorry about Emma) Be sure to keep an eye out for this one. I'm mightily impressed with the writing of C.J. Cooke. You'll be, too. A shining spotlight is in order for Cooke. Bravo!

Paris 1307. Four heretics are to be burned at the stake and Phillip IV of France requires his daughter Isabella to witness it. One of the condemned souls is Knight Templar Jacques de Moloy, who she has met and when his eyes alight on Isabella, he begs for mercy. Under the cool watchful eye of her father this is something she cannot grant and thus, he curses her house, her lineage and that her bloodline will be tormented.
1865 London, Bedlam. Lois/Clara is confined to Bedlam, waking in a padded cell with no clue how she’s got there or even who she is. She possesses a red garnet that she knows is very significant but not why.
2026. Emma Harris is an artist and plagued by terrible dreams of fires, so vivid the heat seems to be on her face. Currently, she’s at the Château de Kerbelle near Paris for her wedding to Sam and her art exhibition called The Dress, featuring thirteen women through time, wearing versions of the dress.
Seven centuries. Three women. One blood curse.
Wow. CJ Cooke sure knows how to tell a terrific Gothic tale. The supernatural, curses, ghastly ghostly entities, tarot cards, witchcraft – it’s all here. It’s a dark Grimm style fairytale, watched over by the Château from whose walls the curse seems to come alive. Ash and dust, fire and smoke, blood, inheritance and identity. It’s fabulously atmospheric both in the French and English mediaeval courts, the horror of 19th century Bedlam where women’s rights are overridden and ignored, and in the 21st Century the château positively exudes a haunting aura.
The three timelines work really well. As a former history teacher, I find the Isabella storyline especially fascinating, I know her story but CJ Cooke makes me rethink how HIStory has branded her the She-Wolf of France, and she absolutely brings her to life. The impact of Moloy’s curse is vividly witnessed in the other timelines and via Emma‘s art which connects and brings the whole thing together.
However, much as I really love the book, Lois/Clara‘s story does fizzle out and we only meet the other women in the paintings briefly. That being said, I think it’s a terrific novel. It’s unsettling, tense, haunting and chilling, gritty raw and ghostly, but overall it’s a thoughtful and thought-provoking multigenerational novel. It’s vivid and well written. I think the author has another best seller on her hands!
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HarperCollins/HarperFiction for the much appreciated early copy in return for an honest review.

C J Cooke can genuinely do no wrong. Every book is so compelling, so luxuriously haunting and inspires pure feminist rage. This one has gone right up there at the top with my favourites.
I don’t know how to express how much I loved this book without spoilers. The narrative around the curse was EVERYTHING I wanted and more. There is nothing I love more than a story that plays with time. I adore a dual contemporary/ historical timeline so to be treated to three here and a multi generational supernatural curse was a gift. My brain was doing internal fist pumps as the links between the three women started to come together. I loved all the timelines and the chilling gothic horror through the centuries. Isabella’s story was inspiring and CJC just writes (and rewrites) strong women so well. Adding in some institutional asylum horror was a genius move, building dread through an atmosphere of visceral vulnerability.
I had to physically make myself slow down reading this, there’s an urgency in each timeline and my eyes were tripping over the words as I had to remind myself to breathe. This is the kind of book that reminds me why I love reading, and that makes me mad when every book isn’t this good.

REVIEW
There is just something about C.J. Cooke's writing that is always so atmospheric, and of course I couldn't resist her newest story The House Of Cursed Daughters. The premise sounded SO intriguing with the ancient curse and three different timelines and women affected... And of course C.J. Cooke did it again. While this story starts out as a slowburn, it wasn't long before the plot started wrapping its tentacles around me and before I knew it I found yourself fully invested in the lives of these women. The House Of Cursed Daughters successfully blends multiple genres and delivers us a powerful, atmospheric and at times very dark read indeed.
Like I already said, The House Of Cursed Daughters has three different timelines, each focusing on a different woman and her possible connection to the curse. The present timeline actually has two different POVs, switching between Emma and her daughter Ivy, although the main POV is Emma herself. I personally liked the present POV the least out of the three, mostly because it involved some family/relationship drama and I just didn't find Emma interesting enough for a long time. My favorite POV was without doubt the one involving Isabella that takes us back to the 14th century. Not only is she the reason the curse exists in the first place, but her life is based on historical facts and I loved learning more about her. If you don't like historical fiction, you might react differently to her POV though. The 19th century POV with Lois seemed less important at first, but it was still powerful and I liked what it added to the plot. My only wish would have been to learn more about the other ten women impacted by the curse over time... I'm not always a fan of multiple POVs, but in this case I would have loved to have at least some of them incorporated into the plot instead of only short mentions in the present timeline.
I don't want to give away too much of the plot to avoid spoilers, but what I can say is that The House Of Cursed Daughters has a lot of offer. It's hard to put this story in a neat little genre box, as it blends genres including contemporary, historical fiction, mystery and supernatural horror... There were parts that were darker than expected, but everything involving the curse was simply fascinating and the vivid descriptions only helped setting the creepy and gothic atmosphere. The supernatural horror scenes can be a bit much if that isn't your cup of tea, and especially in the present timeline... But I personally loved what it added to the plot.
The pace can be a bit slow in the beginning and it took me some time to warm up to the present timeline with Emma, but it is definitely worth it to keep reading. It's true that Isabella's POV is the most interesting of the bunch and Lois only appears later on, but for me she appeared at the right time and she had her role to play in the plot. The pace does pick up considerably in the second half when everything truly escalates, and I finished that part in record time. If you enjoy well written and complex stories based on historical facts and don't mind a dose of supernatural horror with your historical fiction, The House Of Cursed Daughters is an excellent read. It might be one of my favorite C.J. Cooke stories to date!

Thank you to Netgalley, C.J. Cooke, and Penguin Random House Publishing for the advanced copy to read. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
The House of Cursed Daughters is my first read of Cooke's many books. I was very captivated by the intriguing cover and title. Originally, I thought this would be a horror story, but found it to actually be a blend of historical fiction, some romance, mystery, and paranormal genres. I found myself pleasantly surprised. Cooke does an excellant job at writing multiple perspectives and alternating stories in different timelines. I liked reading Clara, Emma, and Isabella's point of views. I would have enjoyed reading all of the thirteen ladies' perspectives mentioned in the story to gain a complete understanding of the different lives involved.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. The pacing of the story was consistent amongst the alternating stories. All stories connected perfectly together.
I would have rated this book 5 stars. I gave it a 4 star rating due to the ending as well as some issues I personally had with the Molay character. Without providing too much detail that would risk spoiling the story for others, I found the ending a bit predictable and tied up too easily. There was much build up through out the story and then the ending came fast.
The only character that I did not feel that was well developed is the story's antagonist, Jacques Molay. He fell flat for me. Yes, we recieve his backstory and first interactions with Isabella to understand why he decided to curse her and her entire bloodline. However, through out the story, his interactions with the other characters are brief, feel minor compared to the level of his curse, and are all the same. He did not feel or seem to be that much of a threat to me. I wanted to see more from him that would make him feel more menancing and an actual threat to the main characters. Perhaps his power could have grown over time as the curse strengthened through each member of Isabelle's bloodline?
I would recommend The House of Cursed Daughters to others to read. Fall is the perfect time to read this interesting, spooky, and historical story. I am interested in reading more from C.J. Cooke.

This was all kinds of fabulous! All the different women and their storylines had me gripped and I completely lost myself in the story!
This is the story of a curse, so we get to see when the curse was first set and how that impacted the women over the ages in that family line. Starting with Isabella in Paris in 1307, a Princess, daughter of a King and cursed by a Knight who is burned alive in front of her. We then follow her storyline and the tragedies that befall her and how she ends up in the Tower of London for the next chapter of her story.
And we also follow the storyline of Emma in the present, an artist who is about to be married, and she's plagued by dreams/nightmares and has been estranged from her daughter too. Her latest artwork is images of women wearing a particular dress, an exhibition that feels extremely personal to her
We also have the storyline of Lois in 1865, who has no memory of who she is and she's locked up in Bedlam, and we also have the POV from Ivy who is the daughter of Emma - each woman has such a fascinating story to tell so each of them is given plenty of time within their book so you get a real sense of their personalities and the challenges they must overcome.
I loved the historical aspect of the storyline and there's so much drama to explore over the 13 generations of women that you're always a little shocked with what faced some of these women in how they were treated. Highly recommended!!

The House of Cursed Daughters by C.J. Cooke is a historical fiction novel about a number of women over 700 years, all cursed.
I’d like to thank NetGalley, the publisher Harper Collins, and the author (CJ Cooke), for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This book looks at the trials faced by women over the years. In that way, the book was sad, rather depressing, and if you want to feel rage against men throughout the ages, then this is the book for you!
Actually, most of the men in this book were born 100's of years ago, so you can't/shouldn't be angry at the men of today. Yes, we've come a long way, but the book looked at different centuries, and the women were still treated badly.
Overall, it was another atmospheric gothic tale, from an author who does a lot of research for her books, and this is no exception.
Honestly, I'm not sure why I chose this book, because historical fiction is not my cup of tea. That being said, this is the third book I have read by this author, so it must have something going for it. She writes really well, her historical research is spot on, and even the "author's note" at the end was interesting.
Anyway, until next time ....

I really liked the unusual concept of House of the Cursed Daughters and the idea of a cursed bloodline spanning over 700 years. The story follows 13 women from the same bloodline, although we only get to hear the stories of three of them. I found myself wishing we’d been given a little more insight into the other women and their experiences, as I think that could have added even more depth to the story.
There were definitely some creepy and eerie moments that I enjoyed, and the overall concept kept me interested. However, despite having plenty of potential, I wasn't completely wowed by it.
That said, it was still an enjoyable read and I’m glad I picked it up. A really interesting premise, just not quite the haunting, gripping read I was hoping for.

Another amazing read from C. J. Cooke! This one follows 700 years of a curse along a family line of women and what a fascinating tale this was. I did find the second half of the book to be much more a page turner than the first half, but my interest was maintained throughout learning the fates of these women. Each time period was successful in creating atmosphere and a sense of place which hugely added to the richly portrayed lives of the characters.

Absolutely loved this book. A curse spanning seven hundred years starting from the execution of the Templars up to present day. Told from three POV’s, we go right back to Queen Isabella the wife of Edward II through to Emma on the eve of her wedding day. Witchcraft, historical events wove throughout the story and a glimpse of Bedlam in the 1800’s, I couldn’t put this book down. Wonderful and highly recommended. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC

Brilliant!
Full review to follow on publication day.
I absolutely loved this book. C. J. Cooke is one of my favourite authors. She has obviously deeply researched this book, going back to France 1312. I was so wrapped up in this book, enjoying the story of the curse so much, I dreamt of Isabella. Written in a triple timeline the book was still easy to follow.
“ The House of Cursed Daughters knits together seven centuries and three unforgettable heroines as it explores female power and the way it can forge bright pathways through indescribable darkness.”
I’m including this description as I’m finding it hard to write without giving anything away so anyone who wants to read it will enjoy it as much as I did.
A massive thank you to Netgalley and the author for the opportunity to read this amazing book.

First of all, thank you to #NetGalley, #HarperFiction, and, of course, C.J. Cooke for the opportunity to read an ARC of The House of Cursed Daughters.
This is my second novel by C.J. Cooke, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. While it felt different from The Last Witch, it still carried her unmistakable storytelling style. Once again, the historical details were fascinating, well-researched, and woven seamlessly into the narrative. I already knew a little about Queen Isabella before picking up this book and even recognized some of the places mentioned, which made the reading experience even more immersive.
One of the reasons I’ll continue reading Cooke’s books is that they always leave me wanting to learn more. Whenever she introduces a historical figure or event, I find myself researching the real history afterward, and I love when fiction inspires that kind of curiosity.
Stories with multiple points of view and timelines spanning centuries can sometimes feel overwhelming, but Cooke’s writing makes it effortless to follow every character and every era. I never felt lost, despite the complexity of the story.
Cooke also isn’t afraid to use disturbing imagery or moments of gore to heighten the unease, but it never feels excessive or included purely for shock value. Instead, it strengthens the haunting atmosphere and serves the story beautifully.
With multiple POVs, I often find myself impatiently waiting to get back to one particular character. Here, however, every storyline had me completely invested, and I was equally excited to return to each one. That said, Isabella’s story was definitely my favourite.
The House of Cursed Daughters is a beautifully eerie, time-spanning gothic tale that weaves together history, dread, folklore, and a haunting atmosphere. From the moment a dying knight curses young Isabella’s bloodline in 1307, the novel establishes a dark, sweeping tone that feels ancient, mysterious, and impossible to escape.
That said, it wasn’t quite a five-star read for me. There was just something missing that kept me from loving it completely. I think the ending left me wanting more. I had hoped for a clearer explanation of the curse itself and a more conclusive ending that brought together the stories of all the women connected to Isabella’s bloodline.
Overall, this is another atmospheric and beautifully written novel from C.J. Cooke that blends gothic horror with rich historical fiction. If you enjoy haunting family curses, dual (or multiple) timelines, and stories where history and folklore intertwine, this is definitely one to pick up.

This is my second novel by C.J. Cooke, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. While it felt different from The Last Witch, it still carried her unmistakable storytelling style. Had to DNF around 40% because I realised I didn’t care what was going to happen and found the characters painfully dull.
This is just not my style of writing, I get frustrated when it’s a lot of female chatting and female overthinking. I also found the mention of ADHD a bit of a buzzword, and it made me find the main present day character fairly irritating.
Having pushed through previous CJ Cooke books (the only one I enjoyed was the Haunting in the Arctic) I have come to realise this author is not for me.
Thanks Netgalley and Titan for the ARC

My Five Word TL:DR Review: Absolutely Brilliant. That is All
I practically inhaled this book, it was so good. I started, and for a moment there, I almost thought maybe this one is going to be the book that doesn’t wow me, but no, a hot minute later I was drawn in and it pretty much knocked my socks off.
I’ve read quite a few of this author’s books now and they seem to go from strength to strength. A Haunting in the Arctic scared the heebies right out of me – they still haven’t returned tbh. I haven’t got over that book. Shocking, dark, scary and absolutely compelling. To be fair I think that is still my absolute favourite although The Last Witch was also really good – and now The House of Cursed Daughters. I adored this book and I’m about 99.9% certain this will be on my favourites list come the end of the year.
Anyway. Review.
I don’t usually cut and paste the book blurb description but in this case the three separate paragraphs outlining the three central characters of the story are spot on, so here they are:
This basically gives you an outline of our three MCs. Although Ivy (Emma’s daughter) also has some of her own page time.
What I loved about this.
The story is addictive. I love a story that is told with dual timelines so imagine my glee discovering that we have three timelines here. And they’re all so good and so different. Isabella’s story is really intriguing, to such an extent that I started googling to find out more about her, even whilst still reading. Then we have Emma and her wedding and art exhibition preparations. As a rule I’m not usually a lover of the more contemporary threads but actually this thread is really interesting. Emma has painted what she believes are 13 women, fictional, from different periods, all wearing the same dress, brought together by her painting of Queen Isabella and concluding with her own self portrait. This feeds into the story very well. And of course we have Lois, an inmate of Bedlam with no memory of how or why she ended up in an asylum. Such a hideous place, positively inhumane.
These three lives intertwine more than you will expect and all this becomes clear as the story progresses.
The writing is really good and the pacing is spot on. There are moments of reflection, we have back stories for the three main characters but on top of that there’s always something taking place. And lets not forget the curse, that terrible bloody curse that has followed Isabel and all her descendants. On top of this there’s a feeling of urgency. Everything is hotting up, something is wrong.
And yet these elements, as good as they are, are not the best part of this story. The absolute winning element of this story is the way Cooke writes the female characters. She is so good at bringing these females to life, painting their struggles, the unfairness that they face and then giving them the strength and courage to see things through. And the stories make you so furious. The inequality these women face, the way their lives are manipulated and abused, But they stand up to be counted and they stand together.
In conclusion, you may be able to guess, but I loved this book and I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with next. If you like split timelines, strong females, excellent writing and curses that become intense and scary then look no further.
I received a copy through Netgalley, courtesy of the publisher, for which my thanks. The above is my own opinion.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this novel. I loved an earlier C. J. Cooke novel, The Book of Witching, but this one did not quote come together for me. Emma is an artist and a mother who has painted 13 women from history with the same dress of red rubies, but she does not know why. The story is about the original woman, Queen Isabella of England, and her descendants', including Emma's, cursed bloodline. Emma is about to get married and have a showing of her paintings at Queen Isabella's childhood home in France when everything gets weird. The story briefly explores another woman in the bloodline, Lois, but that story fades away. The novel spends a lot of time with Isabella, which was enjoyable, but it felt more like historical fiction because much of it did not have anything to do with the main storyline. Emma was not nearly as vivid as Isabella, and just seemed bumbling in comparison. The novel just did not feel quite baked, but it was nevertheless an enjoyable read.

A family curse spanning seven centuries focusing on three women of different times.
We follow Isabella, Clara and Emma as they navigate their lives in different time periods with a looming dark shadow following and cursing their every move.
I really enjoyed Isabella's story, and I definitely immediately went to research her and Edward.
I enjoyed Emma, Tilly and Ivy, I think their natural family unit was lovely even when they could be at odds.
Clara I didn't gel too much with but it was interesting to read of bedlam.
I really enjoy the way CJ Cooke can write multiple timelines that seem to naturally merge with reveals and twists.
I can't wait to read her next work, this was a perfect October read!

Absolutely love this book that spans 700 years and 13 women tied to a curse dating back to the 1200’s. The author didn’t leave one stone unturned in bringing their stores together. I honestly thiugh Emma was off her rocker initially when she starts having odd occurrences and sensations after arriving at her wedding location/ art venue. Isabella, Emma, Ivy, and Clara bring their own female rage and fierceness to the story. I couldn’t pick one character I liked more than another. Perfect story to start the fall off with. Thank you NetGalley and Berkley Publish Group for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A fantastic story weaving the history of 13 women throughout the centuries, up to present day. Only a few of the women's stories were told in detail, while others were hinted at, which made for a wonderful read rich in history. I have read a few of CJ Cooke's books, and this is one of my favourites. The present-day characters were just as deeply crafted as the historical ones, with lives of hardship and survival. From the French Queen of England in the 1300s to inmates of Bedlam in the 1800s, it's obvious that a lot of research has gone into this book. A wonderful tale, full of history and intrigue, with a touch of dark magic in it as well. Highly recommended!

Firstly thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the advanced copy of this book in return for my honest opinion.
This is my second book by this author and it did not disappoint. Told from the points of view of three different women in different times in history and how they navigate a curse that was put on Isabella of France and her bloodline by the Grand Master of the Knights Templar at his execution . This story is informative, interesting and also had a horror aspect as the curse affects all the women of the bloodline . I love history so for me this ticked all the boxes - absolutely loved it

I read an eARC of this book on NetGalley so thank you to the author and the publisher.
Another brilliant book from this author who is the absolute master of ‘just one more chapter’. This book is so suspenseful! It’s a really strong historical horror.
We follow three women across different time periods, but connected across the years. We start with Isabella, a French princess who is cursed at the start of the book. We follow her to England where she is given to the King in marriage. Isabella is a real historical figure and I felt like I learned so much about her and the politics of the time from this book. I’ve actually read non-fiction books about the Plantagenets and Isabella was barely mentioned which seems mad now having read this! An absolutely fascinating figure.
We also follow Emma, a woman in her forties who is getting married in France whilst also setting up an exhibition of her artwork, a series of paintings of thirteen different women. Emma has had some troubles, and is trying to rebuild relationships that have suffered. She’s creative, a little alternative and she’s also experiencing something strange that’s leaving her unsettled. I found Emma’s sections had the greatest suspense. Some of the things that she was experiencing were really unnerving. Plus she has the ticking clock as the countdown to the wedding and exhibition happens. This is then compounded by the stress of organising both and dealing with relatives who aren’t happy to see her. Very stressful! But this also leans into a feeling of, what’s real and what’s stress related?
This was such an interesting historical novel but then you also had the suspenseful horror elements that made this a book that was impossible to put down!

C.J. Cooke has done it again! The House of Cursed Daughters was even better than I anticipated, and I just didn’t want to put it down.
Told across three timelines, we follow Isabella of France in medieval Paris, Lois/Clara in Victorian Bedlam and Emma in a French château in 2026, as their stories intertwine through a centuries-old curse.
I love how much research C.J. puts into her writing. The historical detail never feels like an afterthought, and even the author’s note was full of fascinating facts. I quickly became enamoured with Isabella and wanted to know EVERYTHING about her!
The atmosphere was a real highlight. The descriptions of Bedlam were deeply unsettling, while the castle & chateau felt so vivid, I could picture them clearly. C.J. does such a brilliant job of weaving historical events with gothic horror, keeping you on edge while gradually bringing the three timelines together.
One of my favourite things about C.J.‘s writing is how she brings lesser known women from history to the forefront and explores how they were treated by men and society. Jacques de Molay wasn’t particularly fleshed out, but I actually think that worked in the story’s favour. This was about the women, their experiences and their suffering, and they deserved to be the focus.
This book was everything I want from a gothic historical fiction - unsettling vibes, thorough research, and a fascinating historical figure I want to know more about. I definitely recommend it!!

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the advanced reader’s copy.
I've wanted to read C. J. Cooke for the longest time, and The House of Cursed Daughters did not disappoint.
This story is rich with history, specifically the parts that get swept under the rug, and feminine rage. There is a focus on the things that women had to deal with throughout history and, during certain parts of the book (if you know, you know) I felt so much rage at the treatment of women in asylums and I love that Cooke addresses it because it's something that society as a whole wants to forget.
I loved that the idea of a cursed bloodline came from a moment in Isabella of France's life and evolved from there. It was so interesting learning about her through this story that I immediately went to do some research on her the second I finished the book. While it took me a bit longer to warm up to the present day chapters, I did end up really liking them (and the characters). Once all the pieces started falling into place, I was gripped and couldn't put it down. I absolutely devoured the second half in what felt like no time.

Every year around Halloween, CJ Cooke releases a new book, and every year, it's my favourite read that month!
This one felt very similar to The Book of Witching, with the alternative timelines set in different centuries, the focus on female relationships, and something spooky bringing them together.
I love how Cooke blends real history with gothic fantasy and a touch of the paranormal, giving these women a story that will be remembered.
The two stories set in the past are very insightful, exploring how women were treated in these times, linking brilliantly with a modern-day story of a woman who is trying to live a life she thinks she is expected of her to feel accepted.
The use of her paintings to link these timelines is really clever and there are some veryyyy creepy scenes.
Overall, a beautifully atmospheric read with some chilling moments and lots of great historical depth. I will always recommend her books!!

Thank you to the author, publishers Harper Collins and NetGalley UK for access to this as an advance reader’s ebook. This is an honest and voluntary review.
Isabella, Lois and Emma, three women throughout history, cursed to lose what they love. In the modern day Emma’s life connects with the past in strange and unexpected ways.
I’m usually a fan of this author’s blend of historical fiction and modern discovery. But unfortunately this one didn’t hit the mark for me.
It felt a little too heavy on the historical points, like sharing the results of research were more important than the story. Modern-day Emma also felt quite a distant character and one I didn’t feel I had the chance to know - although she should be more of the focal point.
Equally for a story that link backs through 13 generations of women to only focus on three felt like it was doing a disservice to some of the characters. Probably not helped by the fact that the third main storyline character of Lois never really felt like she made a contribution to the overall plot. Without any spoilers she does have a role in bringing things together, but it’s in a way that doesn’t really pay out on the chapters of her trapped in an asylum.
It’s an interesting idea, but just too disjointed in the delivery.

As a young child Princess Isabella if France is taken to the public execution of 4 Knights Templars. One of the men,Molay, asks Isabella for mercy. She's torn as he was a friend but she feels she has to support her father, she wishes him mercy in a quick death. His dying words were to issue a curse. Despite her father's intervention this curse follows Isabella as she becomes Queen of England and reaches through her bloodline along 13 generations, concluding in Emma's story as she prepares an art exhibition featuring 13 women each wearing the same dress.
As per CJ Cooke previous novels she weaves a fabulous storyline. The book is atmospheric and blends history and present times perfectly. The women are all strong characters, showcasing women's power. It's a great read

The House of Cursed Daughters is another amazing story from the author that completely delivers on a wonderful gothic style. I absolutely loved the different timelines, appreciating how distinctive each era felt and how beautifully they all came together by the end of the narrative. The plot covers plenty of brilliantly spooky themes—including ancient curses, creepy psychics, witches, and intense hauntings—making it a perfect atmosphere to get lost in. Beyond the supernatural elements, what made this a truly thought-provoking read was its deep exploration of feminist views through the years, historical mental health care, and the heavy weight of generational trauma. It is an incredibly powerful tale packed with feminine power, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a rich, dark, and meaningful gothic mystery!
