Rebecca Orchard is the Bride Hunter. She's a 27 year old matchmaker for the wealthy. Becca sort of fell into this job after a complete upheaval of her life and beliefs. So she's taken steps to protect herself while she helps others find their matches.
This is Amy Appleton's debut book and the only one I could find that she had written. I really liked the premise of this book, and it was written quite well. There were so many things going on in this book at one time, and most of them got fair air time. There were some parts I felt were superfluous and would have been better to leave out, or if they had been explained better wouldn't seem to be separate. For example, the bitterness between Becca's mom and her sister Georgie, and the real deal with Heather. It also took me quite a while to get engrossed in the book.
I liked most of the people Becca was trying to match. The romantic twists were nice and surprising. This book is a great summer read nonetheless!
I picked this book on a whim, wandering around the bookshop looking for something light and fluffy to read on that particular day. I was drawn to it by the gorgeous cover and the blurb sounded fun. I had never heard of the author before and I like that - sometimes you can discover hidden gems that way.
So, straight into the plot! Becca Orchard is an ex headhunter turned "bride hunter" - finding the perfect wives for rich men working in the City, assisted by her eccentric aunt Georgie. Becca doesn't have much time for love herself, until the day she takes on her first female client and has to go searching for eligible bachelors instead.
I'll say right off, the sexism in the book did make me slightly uncomfortable, hence my 3-star rating. The men looking for wives were portrayed as nice but workaholics who just needed a woman to make sure they were dressed properly and ate proper meals. Yawn. Sam, the "career woman" in search of a husband, was portrayed as a stubborn, domineering bitch. Such a cliché. We are in the twenty first century, for goodness sake! Why must we have all these stereotypes?
Aside from that, it was a fun light hearted read. I loved the character of Georgie, she really made the book for me. It was a interesting premise for a story as well, and although slightly unbelievable, it did work well. I call this kind of book a "beach read" book, one that you can read and enjoy without having to think about it too much.
This is a solid example of chick lit. If I had a girl friend going on vacation I would happily recommend this as a book to go with her.
The story isn't complicated and you can see where things are going long before they go there. The heroine is given an "every women" feel, not too tall, not to big, not too little, a character that is easy to identify with because she could be any woman on the street. At the same time that leaves her with no real identity but in this case it didn't bother me. Appleton did give her characters flaws and a back story so you do get a sense of personality from Becky. The men in the story fell into two categories hunky/conceited and boyish/self conscious. But her cast of female characters were a fun group with varying opinions of love and lust.
What really appealed to me was Appleton's writing style. Her cheeky British humour had me laughing almost every page. She had me from the first line because any book that starts with, "First things first, I am NOT a pimp (whatever my mother says)." Has an instant endearment factor. Appleton did not lose her sense of humour as the story went on and I found myself mentally comparing it to how a North American author would have written it - a lot more drama a lot less dry wit.
Worth a read.

Becca Orchard spends her working days finding the perfect wives for filthy rich men who are ready to settle down. Until one day, when a woman comes to her asking for help finding a husband. Becca has never had a female client before, and she's not sure she's up to the challenge... or is she?
An enjoyable read. Becca is one of those women that's so busy fixing up everyone else's love life, that she hasn't got time for her own. Well, that's all about to change! Becca finds her task of finding the perfect husband for Sam pretty difficult - she's not exactly the most easygoing of people. A fun and light book from Amy Appleton.
This was entertaining in a way, but the main character did take took long to come to her senses, so to speak. So there was a lot of overdramatization of minor things in the way.
