A very interesting travelling book whereby the author goes to visit part of Iran's train network and uses it to retell the rail history of the country, how it was connected to the then Russian and British empires (via now Azerbaijan/Pakistan), and mostly how the trans-Iranian North-South line was thought, advocated for, built and operated, with the contemporary Iranian history happening in the background.
I'm a sucked for such books, and I must say I'm sad that 1. the book's following of Iranian contemporary history is too unstructured and missed out on the Mossadegh government and the 1979 revolution, which would have been a welcome addition, and 2. the ending is really abrupt and leaves the reader wanting - I would really have expected more. Maybe there were parts that were censored, or the author planned to write a second part, or I don't know, but they could really have developed the last parts a bit more.
