Rate this book
When she lost it all, Jess decided to cope by living a lie.
But you can't keep on pretending forever...
Twenty-one-year-old Jess used to have everything—a loyal best friend, a boyfriend she loved, and a future that was right on track. But in a single night, her whole world changed.
Now, Jess lives for the impersonal connection of drunken hook-ups and to-go coffee cups in the morning. All she needs is one night to pretend everything is fine...until she meets Adam.
Thanks to a sports injury, gorgeous, charming basketball star Adam Carson is stuck in physical therapy at the hospital where Jess interns—giving her the perfect opportunity to see his sweet, considerate nature and making her realize that maybe she does want something more.
But while Adam might be the best thing that's happened to Jess in a long time, letting him past her carefully constructed walls means letting him know what happened...and why he'd never want her for more...

I'm not really sure how to rate this book. On one hand, I really enjoyed the story. Adam was an awesome hero. He is an injured college basketball player who is going through physical therapy. Jess is studying to become a physical therapist and she's assisting Adams PT and they meet and have an instant connection and strike up a friendship. Adam is unlike a lot of the heroes in this genre. He's not a manwhore, he's trying to recover from his injury. I can't say enough how much I really liked Adam. Where I struggle with this story is the heroine, Jess. I didn't hate her but I thought she was incredibly selfish and self-centered. I do feel bad for her and what she's gone through but I still don't agree with a lot of her actions. I did enjoy this story, I just wish maybe the heroine was a little different. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series and more by this author.

It's books like this one that completely ruin me when it comes to men. Because Adam Carson is the ultimate folks. Sigh. He's pretty much my dream guy. He not only plays basketball, but he enjoys watching The Vampire Diaries, is drop dead gorgeous and oh so very patient. He really stole my heart which made me want to throttle Jess all the more for her shenanigans.

While Jess drove me a little crazy with her back and forth, I didn't overly dislike her character. I felt for her. She has endured a very tragic event and because of it she has lost a lot of trust and stability that her life once used to have. She copes by participating in drunken hook ups, becoming blissfully numb to the incredible loss she feels. I was happy when her and Adam's paths crossed, as he is just the kind of guy she needs in her life. She hasn't befriended many people, so watching her interact with him and her roommate Zoe was a big deal. Still, she could be incredibly selfish but at least she owns up to that and tries to make things better. Zoe calls her on that which is why I liked her character so much. She's quirky and a bit nerdy, but she's in Jess's corner and wants to have a friendship with her.

You already know how I feel about Adam from my opening paragraph. The guy is a trooper for putting up with Jess's crap and you have to give him kudos for sticking around when not many would. He is dealing with an injury and my heart broke for him because he just wanted to play basketball. He is realistic and knows this will be his last season but that doesn't make not playing any easier. I did really enjoy how comfortable he was with Jess. The two definitely have sparks flying and every time she friend zoned him I wanted to scream in frustration. I wanted them together and I wanted both of them to be happy. It's definitely not an easy road for them as Jess has some things in her life she needs to put to rest before she can truly move on with her life.

I ended up really enjoying this despite Jess's back and forth. I liked the storyline and watching these two fall for one another. Jess deserves happiness after everything she's gone through so I was happy when she finally decided to let Adam in. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

5 blown away stars!

A.J. Has done it again. One Night was pure perfection!

I always know I'm going to fall in love with a book when A.J. Pine is the author. Her writing style has me hooked line and sinker. Her ability to write sweet romance is mind blowing. And with One Night the H is the sweetest guy. It's not very often you have the heroine be the 1 night stand type. But with Jess, she is a broken mess who can only handle 1-night with somebody. Her past has shaped her into a person who doesn't believe in the happily ever after.

Adam Carson comes into the picture and changes things for Jess. He tries to break past her boundaries and wants to have a relationship with her, but she won't budge. How long will he be able to just stay friends with her?

One Night definitely has more angst than her other books, but it felt right. It may have hurt my heart, but life isn't always rainbows and unicorns. This book left me with major FEELS. My heart was happy. It may have been a sad journey and when we find out what happened in Jess' past you really feel for her.

So if you're looking for a sweet romance with a little angst thrown in, this is definitely your kind of book!

4.5 swoony stars This book was exactly what I needed. It was so up my alley and the romantic in me is so happy. It’s a love story that spoke to my heart and made me fall in love right along side of Adam and Jess. There was definitely a lot of push and pull, but it was done in a way that was realistic and made their journey such a good one.

Jess and Adam both have baggage, and when they meet it’s as if there was a spark got ignited and pushed them both out of their funk. Without even knowing it, they each gave the other a new outlook. Jess is definitely the one who was more resistant to give in, and she still needed to work through the event that changed her. Adam has also had baggage, but he was in a place that was better…thank goodness because I would have cried if Adam gave up on her.

The romance was pretty special and it definitely gave my heart the flutters. Jess and Adam never planned to fall in love, but it was obvious they had something special from the moment their eyes connected. Their rapport was easy, comforting, but went deeper as well. It gave the whole package. It was healing. But that is just one side of the romance…the other part is the physical…the part where every touch is electric, every kiss is so consuming, and sexy pecs and abs scream to be touched just the right amount of smexy times. It was perfection, written in a way that spoke to me.

The secondary characters in this story were top notch. Normally, in so many stories these characters grate on my nerves, but here Zoe, Zach(s), Tracy and Regan all held a special role and I fell in love with all of them too. YAY!

So what didn’t work quite as well as the rest of the story for me? (This is nitty gritty) It was Jess’s personality in the beginning. It just didn’t jive with her character, it’s as if that part of the story was written before Jess was totally fleshed out. I don’t think she was a lady-whore, I would have rather her slept with a few men as a way that was a cry for help, not as this over confident woman that was just about sex, because that just wasn’t her personality. While it was supposed to be an act, it still didn’t flow with her character. While she could have been promiscuous, I felt like she needed to have been written in a different way. However, thankfully that cold act was dropped immediately and we got to know the softer Jess, the one that really was trying to be ok.

The ending was so good and I got to bask in the love and happiness. What made it so perfect was that it wasn’t perfect and there was still a lot of work to be done, but both Jess and Adam were on the same page. I absolutely loved this evolution and the HEA was worth waiting for.

Would I rec this? A huge puffy hearted YES! If you like swoony romance and amazing kisses this is a must for your TBR.

Happy reading!

A.J. Pine’s books have taken a big place in my heart. Forever. They are just so easy to get into. You get swept away by the way of the story and before you know it, it’s over, and you have to wait for more.

Amy is such a great writer. I love the way she gives us unusual characters and turns them into something else. Something that looks like magic in front of our eyes. Adam and Jess were like that to me. When I found out Adam was going to be a basketball player, I was all in. I’m all for sports romances.

Even though the sports part isn’t so big in this book, I get so happy when a character plays a sport. And it was so fantastic to see Adam play! Thank you, A.J..

It was so much fun to watch Jess grow before my eyes, and she was a great character – one whom I love at first sight.

The relationship between Adam and Jess started as friends (I LOVE THIS SO MUCH), but they knew there was something between the lines they didn’t want to acknowledge.

I love these kinds of stories- friends to lovers. It’s just so powerful and amazing to see them interact. The teasing, the looks they gave to one another, the smiles; it all led up to what we all wanted. ;)

It was magical- this book was magical. Also, Amy makes me cry so much with her books, but I forgive her every time, because she always manages to make it worth it. Every single book of hers is worth it. And if you haven’t read a book of hers yet, I highly recommend you to start.

Amy is going to go all big-star on us.

Every once in a while a character comes along that sticks out from all of the others that you have read. This story had one with the character of Jess. Let me tell you I wanted to slap her in to another hemisphere, then drop kick her for her selfishness and all sorts of other horrible things. I was so annoyed with her issues and baggage and selfishness I actually found myself hoping it would not work out for her.

Ok maybe I am reacting a little harsh. She did have a traumatic event in her life and she never allowed herself to heal. I get that but she knew she was toying with Adam's emotions and just continued to do so. There is a fine line between being broken and just plain pathetic and unfortunately she fell in to the latter for me.

On the flip side, I simply adored Adam. He is the perfect book boyfriend and every girls fantasy. For him to be such a stand up guy with all of the crap Jess tossed at him only made me love him more. He was what held the story together and the reason I wanted things to work out in the end. He is what salvaged the story for me.

I also enjoyed Jess' roommate. I hope that the next story is about her as I felt she had a whole lot more substance than Jess and frankly was a more interesting character. Lets hope so as I will be keeping my eyes opened for it.

Thank you NetGalley and InterMix for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The story is cliche and the writing style is decent and an easy read. However, the main character just annoyed the heck out of me. Jess Elliott have issues, I get it. It's not new to me certain characters have issues for example; bad breakups, best friend betrays, traumatic past.. etc. and Jess experienced it. What happened to her is depressing. I understand but what gets in my nerves is the way she handle such situation.

She's surrounded with trusted people who cared and willing to help but she's not not helping herself. She's so whiny and selfish. Such an annoying female lead. Adam Carson, on the other hand is way better. I love his patience and understanding for Jess. I think he deserves some credit for that.

I think what keeps me interested in reading this is Adam, Reagan (Jess' patient) and Zoe (Jess' roommate/best friend). This has great potential, but I just feel underwhelmed by this. Maybe more of the chemistry between the characters and a less annoying female lead.

Good guy hero who is pretty great.

The heroine though - man - I tried realllly hard to like her. She can't commit to the hero because of something in her past - unfortunately we don't learn what that is until the 3/4 mark of the book. I think the readers needed to know this info earlier because she is hard to like.

I like the author's voice and will def read another by her, but I had a hard time with this heroine.

Such an amazing story and it's written so well, because, really, AJ Pine writes effortlessly and flawlessly. Love. this. book.

It's the first time I read a book by A.J. Pine. Big, big, big first impression !!

One night was a captivating read. I couldn't help falling in love with its characters, and really appreciated the quality of A.J. Pine's writing.
I couldn't put the book down, and suffered a huge book hangover afterwards.

Jess and Adam were so special, their story went straight to my heart.
"Be my future, Jess," he says when we break for air. "And let me be yours. We'll figure out the rest together."

Jess' character really moved me. At times, I wanted to tell her everything would be okay, at others I just wanted to tell her to get a grip, but that's what made her character so realistic. She was complex, and her emotions were beautifully and honestly described.

And Adam was so sweet *insert swoon here*. He also had to deal with issues of his own, and nevertheless was always there for Jess, trying to get to know her and help her.
"Jess", he says as he closes his eyes. How does he do that, turn my name against me?

I would love to read this story from Adam's point of view, to know a little bit more about what exactly was on his mind during the whole story.

Special mention goes to Zoe for being one of the coolest supporting characters, and definitely the best roommate possible. She was just perfect and also brought lightness to the story.

I won't miss A.J. Pine's next book in the series, One Life, where Jess and Adam will appear as background characters, cause I absolutely want to know what will happen to them next, and because I will be delighted to enjoy A.J. Pine's beautiful writing again.

I was given a copy of this book for review. All thoughts are my own.

One Night brings us the story of two different people, Adam and Jess brought together by chance. Adam is dealing with a loss of self in away and sees in Jess someone he wants to get to know.

Jess tries to be a loner, keeping to herself, never trying to find out about others, keeping mum on details about herself. But slowly she starts to open up to not only her roommate but Adam as well. At first the three of them sort of find a joint ritual, The Vampire Diaries, and its sort of the catalyst that kicks off things changing direction for Jess.

The Banter between Adam and Jess pulled me in from the start and made me want to see them together. I wanted Jess to confide in Adam and for her to see herself in a good light.

But Jess is struggling with guilt and self-blame and a loathing from past mistakes and therefore remains aloof to the sincere feelings of her friends. It takes a lot of talking and working things out to get her to see what is in front of her face.

One Night is an amazing story that shows that though our choices shape us, they don't have to define us. And also that sometimes the hardest but most important person to forgive is OURSELVES. Jess felt alone because she deemed herself unworthy of having someone feel for her and she struggled letting herself feel as well. Adam brought the swoon and lightheartedness a lot during the book as he tried to be Jess' friend while also not denying he wanted more. I found this story full of unexpected twists and though there were emotional moments, they just brought more love for the characters and what they were dealing with now and from the past.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and I came to not only appreciating the story on a whole (not to mention the topic it explores through the book's main character) but also the inner conflicts of the characters which were written very nicely too. So I would most definitely recommend this book to everyone. I really enjoyed it.

4 I adore Adam Stars!

Source: eARC for Honest Review Courtesy of Intermix/Penguin Group

This was my first A.J. Pine and it won't be my last.

Jess is broken. Very very broken. She's trying to survive the best way she can by running when things get to tough. It's her only coping mechanism otherwise she breaks even more.

Adam has been hurt but the only thing that keeps him going is basketball so when there is chance that he may lose that as well, he breaks a bit too.

A chance meeting and a spark of hope for these broken two is all it takes to change their lives. At first they become friends because that's all Jess can give but that doesn't stop them from falling for each other.

As barriers start to drop Jess starts to let people in her selfish bubble. Normally I'm not a fan of selfish girls but for Jess you understand why she's so clueless and selfish. For her she's barely coping and her problems fill bigger then everything else, which causes her not to see anything else around her.

Thankfully between Adam, her feisty roommate and the vampire diaries she comes out of her shell and opens her heart but once the truth and past come to the forefront she breaks more which causes her to run even faster and farther.

" Give the people who love you a chance. Give yourself a chance. Stop Running."

To move forward she has to face the hard truths of her past and start to move on. She had to grow up to fast with her personal devastation but she has to learn that no one has control of their future. She just has to buck up and live each day to the fullest and accept and deserve love. Especially when it comes from someone so understanding and loving as Adam. His love breaks your heart. He wants to love Jess so much but can his heart take anymore blows before he puts up his own barriers.

Jess's story is a tough story especially for any girl that has to go through that so young, but with this tough life expereince it can only make her stronger and better. I adored Adam and was quite smitten with this story. It was cute and heartbreaking.

This emotionally complex romance is the story of Jess and Adam. Jess has experienced a trauma in her life that has left her emotionally scarred and unable to commit to anything with a man more than a one night stand. When she meets Adam, an injured basketball player as part of her physiotherapy school rotation, his obvious interest in her is something she is unsure how to deal with. It's only a matter of time before the sparks between them lead to something more than friendship. But will Jess's inability to trust Adam with her past ruin their new relationship?

I really loved this story. It starts out strong with Jess revealing her reluctance to commit to any emotional attachment with the men she brings home, but not letting the reader know what is behind her messed up feelings until much later in the story. (Confession, I guessed what had happened right away and was pleased to find out I was right!). All her decisions are made based on events in her past and affect everything about her current relationships with her parents, her roommate and the people she meets, including Adam. Adam is a sweet, friendly man whose knee injury has destroyed his chance at a professional basketball career, though he hopes to give his college team one more winning season. He sees beyond Jess's standoffish demeanor and accepts what she's willing to give him - friendship at the start, though he wants more. I liked how their relationship developed, that it wasn't an insta-love declaration but a true friendship with stronger feelings developing over time. He's very patient with her and though sometimes I just wanted to shake Jess, it's clear that she has problems that have to be dealt with before anything serious is going to happen with her and Adam. The sexual attraction between them leads to some sexy scenes, intense and well written.

Equally as much as their relationship, I loved Jess's burgeoning friendship with her roommate Zoe. Zoe doesn't pull any punches once Jess starts opening up to her. Also, my inner geek rejoiced in conversations involving sexy vampire shows, comic-con, Zoe's new friend 'Spock' and assorted other pop culture references. There is plenty of witty banter and camaraderie in the story to go along with the more serious plot line of Jess's trauma and together it made for a riveting, entertaining and emotional read. 5 stars!

My Thoughts:

One Night is the first book I've read by A.J. Pine and I really enjoyed it. This story was told soley from the leading female character, Jess' perspective. We learn that something heartbreaking occurred in her life, which resulted in her break-up with her long-term serious boyfriend Bryan and the disintegration of the friendship with her former roommate and best friend, Ashley.

Ever since that fateful event, Jess keeps to herself. She avoids relationships, and has frequent hook-ups, so that she can be held in someone's arms, and not wake up alone. Her new roommate, Zoe, seems like an easygoing person, but Jess keeps her distance.

Jess is currently working at the local hospital as a P.T. intern. One day she meets, Adam Carson, star college basketball player, who is currently undergoing physical therapy for a serious knee injury. As Jess begins to work with Adam frequently, they share a mutual attraction, and develop a friendship. It becomes evident that Adam wants more than friendship from Jess, but is it possible for her to let her guard down, and take a chance on love?

I thought that I had figured out what made Jess so adamant against having a serious relationship. Was I ever wrong! When I found out what had happened, it came as a surprise to me, and I was so happy that the situation wasn't a predictable one. Adam's character won me over right away. He was so sweet, charming, easy going, and had a positive light about him. Jess, had a lot of angst, turmoil, loneliness, and pain. I loved how Adam found a way to make her smile, laugh, and let down her guard by just being himself. No matter how difficult Jess was, Adam didn't give-up on her.

I also loved Jess' roommate Zoe, who was a spirited, strong, loyal, and supportive friend. Even though it was clear that she had her own burdens to deal with, she was still there for Jess. I would love for Zoe to get her own story! Another great character, was 13 year old patient, Regan. I loved this sweet and vibrant girl! Ms. Pine's cast of characters were well-developed and very likeable.

My Rating:

I give, One Night, by A.J. Pine, 4 Heartbreaking, Healing, Sweet Romance, New Beginning Filled Stars! I'm really looking forward to continuing this series, and we get Zoe's story next!

Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars

One Night was pleasant surprise, with an engaging storyline and relatable characters I was hooked from the very first page.

Our MC is twenty-one year old Jess, studying to be a Physical Therapist she is struggling to move on from a painful incident from her past, she has regrets and she knows pain but she's also the type of person you'd love as a friend with her kindness, humour and compassion.

Adam Carson was the perfect boyfriend material, smexy, understanding and accepting; he has struggles of his own with an injury which will shorten his basketball career - I adored his kindness and patience and his devotion to Jess, she could be hard work at times but he stood by her side. The chemistry between these characters was wonderful; they couldn't have been more perfect for one another. All of the secondary characters played a key role in this book, the interactions between them all were done very well, and I especially loved Zoe and Regan.

I adored Jess and Adam’s initial meeting, she is interning at the hospital where he is receiving PT, there was a lot of witty banter and cheeky grins shared but she still held herself back, not believing herself worthy of anyone and keeping all relationships impersonal and only having drunken hook-ups, her past was emotional and her feelings understandable.

The mystery behind what had happened with Jess kept me flicking the pages, I had an inkling of what it was and I was right but it was painful to read about none the less. I am pleased the author dealt with Jess’s issues with kindness and compassion and medication, therapy and the necessary help was mentioned throughout without brushing her issues aside.

I enjoyed A.J Pine’s writing, there were a few instances where I had to read back what had happened and I also felt a few things could have been explored further such as Adam’s ex Kim – I still didn’t understand the purpose of her making an appearance without anything coming of it – I was waiting for a bit of confrontation but there was nothing.

Overall, I enjoyed One Night; it did have a few YA Cliches but it was written well and kept me entertained.

One Night follows the story of Jess and Adam. Once upon a time, Jess had the perfect life: a great boyfriend, amazing best friend and a bright future. The sky was the limit. That was until one night, everything changed. Now Jess is just a shell of the person she used to be. She’s damaged, broken, unloveable…or so she thinks. She doesn’t let any men get close to her. They only get one night. One night for her to pretend that everything is normal. The one thing she wasn’t ready or prepared for was Adam.

Basketball was Adam’s life until a sports injury took him out of the game. He was dreading Physical Therapy until he met Jess. There was just something about Jess that made him want to know her more. But Jess has made her walls very high and it’s almost impossible for Adam to get through. He’s tries desperately to show her that she does deserve a happy future and more than what she’s allowing herself. Will Jess be able to let Adam in and tell him the secret that she is hiding? Will Jess be able to give more than just one night?

One Night was a very captivating read. I was hooked from the very first chapter. I was so intrigued, wanting to know what happened to Jess to make her so scared and broken. I loved the chemistry between Jess and Adam. Adam was exactly what Jess needed in her life. He wasn’t afraid to take on her issues/demons. Yes, Jess did frustrate me at times. I wanted her to wake up and see what an amazing guy Adam was and tell her that he was worth the risk. However, once I found out what happened to her, I understood her a lot more.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The story-line captivating and the characters easy to connect with. I will warn you that this story does deal with some tough subject matter. Other than that, this story has the perfect mix of angst, and romance. Another great read from AJ Pine.

One Night went way beyond my all but one of my expectations. My biggest expectation was to cry, with mucus and blurry eyes and fat cheeks, the works, but gladly none of that happened.
Don't get me wrong this book was sad, but it wasn't "OHMYGOSH MY BABIES" sad, it was more along the lines of "Aww my poor babies". Besides that, everything about this beauty was gold.
The writing was spectacular. It seems as if AJ Pine's writing improves every time she writes a book. I can't wait until she's written 25 books and is covered in tattoos, because I know I'll be blown away. The descriptions, the emotions aren't just that, they're more, they're deeper. Some points are confusing not everything is clear cut but that's because Jess isn't black and white, even though she thinks she is.

When you're battling a mental illness it's hard to find peace, it's hard to be happy with where you are in life without having to worry about what's to come. That right there is Jess' situation.

She has her fears like everyone in this world, but her's are amplified. It's not her being dramatic nor is it her succumbing to her illness. One Night is about showing strength in your weakest of times. It's about you realizing that you need people's help; not everything can be done by ourselves even though we want it that way so badly. People are there for us to lean on; we need to take advantage of that support and comfort.

Again I say that One Night was lovely. Everyone needs to read this beauty and bask in its greatness.

Loved this!

5 stars.

Even though it's only March, I know this will be one of my favorite books of the year. I love it so much I can hardly stand it!

Jess had a perfect life until one night changed everything. Now, believing she doesn't deserve anything more, she has a strict one-night rule--guys only get one night with her, and that's it.
He was the one. I saw my life mapped out with him beside me. Instead I have to-go cups and boys with maps that lead only to one place--my bedroom.

She doesn't plan on meeting Adam. Sweet, swoony Adam, who sees her and wants more than just one night.
"I want it all," he says. "This..." He kisses my forehead. "And this." His lips brush the skin above my heart. "But only if you are with me, if you want it too."

These two are amazing. I love this story, the pacing, the secondary characters, just everything. I don't even know how to express my love for this story. Still even days later, I'm tongue-tied and mesmerized. I loved how sweet Adam was and how real Jess was. I love that he didn't give up on her. I love the steam and the swoon. If you love New Adult, One Night by A.J. Pine is an absolute must read for you.

One Night was such a good read! Loved it, so many feels.

This was an emotional and heartwarming read, it had me turning the pages until 4am, I just couldn't put it down until I finished.

Loved both Jess and Adam, they were both characters that touched me and even though at times I wanted to yell at Jess I totally understood her fear and didn't blame her for having those insecurities.

Adam was just perfect, I loved everything about him. He was patient, loving, a great friend and he was the perfect guy for Jess. Adam made me swoon and tear up with how much he loved and cared for Jess.

One Night was one of those books that I clicked with from the first page, I loved all the characters and I'm hoping and crossing my fingers that we get to read Jess's room mate and friend Zoe's story next. Loved that girl! She was funny, honest and just the best friend a girl could ever want.

I'm a huge fan of A.J. Pine's work, love her writing and I highly recommend you read not only this book but all her work.

Thank you NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Berkley, NAL / Signet Romance, DAW for the advance copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.

This book is one of the most intense, touching, gorgeous new adult romances I think I've ever read. Adam is the type of jock we don't see often enough reflected in NA: a guy who loves his sport, who loves to play, who doesn't take advantage of his status as a top basketball player. He's strong and caring, and not afraid to deal with the tough topics, not afraid of Jess who is dealing with her own daemons. I refuse to spoil the amazing secret, but let's just say that it's something we don't see often enough -- unique in the NA books I've read. Jess' struggles, the way she copes with her reality, is beautifully rendered.

ONE NIGHT is a beautiful story of learning to move past the things that have happened to us and embrace the possibility that the future could be different, that love is possible. As always, I just want more and more of AJ Pine's books.

**4-4.5 stars** This is one of those books that I didn't want to put down. I stayed up late to finish and I don't regret it one bit. I'm such a fan of A.J's books. Adam...well all I can say is; if you're looking for a new book boyfriend, here he is. Loved his character. His personality and the way he sticks by Jess through everything and won't give up on her. Jess has some pretty serious things she needs to heal from and it's a battle, but with a wonderful supporting cast of characters, she's got the support she needs to get there.

One Night has been on my TBR for freaking ages. Truthfully, I'm actually embarrassed by how long it took me to get around to it. I enjoyed it, but it just wasn't quite love for me.

My biggest issue with One Night was that I struggled to connect with Jess. I can't pinpoint exactly why I didn't connect with her however. I didn't dislike her character. In fact, the longer the book went on the more I sympathized with her. Unfortunately, I also got a bit annoyed with her back and forth when it came to Adam. Now Adam? I loved me some Adam. He was so sweet and the way he cared for Jess made me swoon. Their friends to more romance was sweet.

One Night was a solid book. It was a quick read. I liked the romance, but missed the feels I think I'd have had if I truly connected with Jess. Sadly, I did not. Now all that said, I'm really interested in Jess' roommate's book, so I did snag it from Amazon after finishing this one.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

FAVORITE QUOTES

"You're beautiful and funny and smart and all of these things. How could you think you're anything less?"

Maybe we can seal some of the cracks for each other. Maybe the next time we break, there will be fewer pieces to pick up.

I adored AJ Pine’s first two books, If Only and What If. She writes great, complex characters with real life issues, and One Night was no exception. One Night is an emotional story about two people who were broken in their own way, but who helped each other learn how to heal.

Jess is haunted by many personal demons. Her life changed two years ago, and since then she’s kept people at arm’s length to keep her heart safe. She never fully let herself heal and recover from the trauma in her past, and it’s affected her entire life, even though she doesn’t realize it. Jess wasn’t always easy to like. I’m all for flawed characters, and while I sympathized with Jess and felt horrible for the things that happened to her, I went back and forth between really liking her and wanting to throttle her. In closing herself off, she became self-centred and almost all her actions had selfish motivations. She didn’t care about anyone else because she was so busy focusing on her own problems - or more accurately, avoiding her problems. That being said,
I fully believe you don’t have to like or agree with everything a character does if there’s a reason for it. Jess learned a lot about herself through the course of the book and changed her self-destructive, hurtful, selfish behaviour. Her first inclination was always to push people away and not let anyone get close, but Adam and her roommate Zoe slowly took down her defenses and forced her to see some ugly truths about herself that made her want to change. I loved that Zoe wasn’t afraid to call Jess on her shit and tell her how selfish she was; sometimes it takes someone to point something out to you before you fully realize it and try to change the behaviour. I appreciated and enjoyed Jess’s growth, even though it took awhile and was frustrating to watch at times.

While I had issues with Jess, I thought Adam was pretty damn close to perfect. He was strong, patient, and determined. Being a basketball star, he had girls falling all over themselves for him, but he was focused on his career and overcoming his injury so he could keep playing through the end of college. He was sweet and funny and his charm and openness drew Jess in, despite her desire to keep her guard up. I loved the chemistry between these two and thought they were great together. Their interactions ranged from fun, funny, and flirty to frustrating to sexy. Despite Jess’s actions making me want to scream sometimes, I never stopped rooting for these two. It was obvious they really cared about each other, and that Adam’s love had a healing affect on Jess’s broken heart.

Other things I loved about this book: the side characters, especially Zoe and Regan. They were fleshed out well, and they each had something important to teach Jess. I loved all the little touches in the book that were like a running joke and kept me grinning, like the shitty coffee, the cake, the Chinese food, and Vampire Diaries. They made me feel like I was part of the story, like I was actually hanging out with Jess and Adam and Zoe. I also loved how depression and trauma were dealt with in a believable, compassionate, respectful manner, and that ultimately Jess wasn’t ashamed to get help and make sure she had the tools to heal completely and live a full, happy life.

One Night was a love story in every sense of the word. It was about learning to love yourself, learning to love others, and learning to let others love you, even when it’s not easy, and even when it hurts like hell. It shows that horrible, life-altering, agonizing things can happen to you, but if you have the strength and a great support system, you can overcome anything. Love and friendship really do have healing powers, and One Night explores that in a beautiful, realistic way. This was another great book from AJ Pine, and I’m eager to read whatever she writes next.
