True Devotion

Rate this book
Find out if rock sensation Simon can break through tough-girl Devon’s steely exterior—if he can keep his head on straight, that is—in this second sizzling romance in the True series!

Devon Jenkins is a feisty blonde, and Simon Cole is the arrogant, sexy guitarist playing in her brother’s band. When they met for the first time, it went something like this: He hit on her, she shot him down, he made a lewd joke, she told him he was an idiot.

In the two years since then, not much has changed. From the way Simon flirts shamelessly with any set of ovaries within a 100-mile radius, Devon knows the smartest thing she can do is keep an impenetrable wall between them.

But sometimes the smart choice isn’t necessarily the right one…

“Only you. Only me?”

I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to pick this up, especially after devouring Simon and Devon's story in one sitting. I don't know how she does it, but Liora Blake has now managed to create two men I completely adore. First, Trevor from True North and now his bandmate, Simon. Cereal addiction aside, he might be the perfect guy. Seriously, can I just take a moment to gush about how amazing I think Simon is?

I can’t tell you how refreshing it is in a genre rife with manwhores and bad boys to have a guy that’s just so normal, down-to-earth and willing to be vulnerable and honest - at all costs. And did I mention Simon loves to read and is a killer guitar player? I don’t know about you, but that’s a ton of boxes checked on my list of book boyfriend requirements.

Have no fear - there are no games being played here either. Unless you count Simon’s nerdy rambling, flirty innuendoes, random silliness or shameless taunting when he’s trying to rile up Devon. These two might be different on so many levels, but somehow someway it just works. And their banter - it’s truly stellar. Have I mentioned how crazy I am for funny and snarky banter?

True Devotion is told through the eyes of Devon, Trevor’s (True North) little sister. Sure, we’ve all read a version of the girl falling for the brother’s friend, but this felt different somehow. It really boiled down to how unexpectedly sweet and genuine Simon turned out to be. He wasn’t the typical guy in a band, which I have to say, threw both Devon and I off. From the beginning, their connection was obvious, but what wasn’t clear until he made it so, Simon wanted it all. Not just a random hook-up or a few nights together, but every. single. thing. Do I have your attention yet?

There's no denying, Devon makes some boneheaded and infuriating decisions along the way. All of her self-doubt and self-created drama aside, there was a part of me that was immediately drawn to her character. Struggling with the past and weary about giving up even a tiny piece of herself for a relationship, she's one tough chick. Aggravating or not, once you get to know her history it’s easy to see things from her perspective. And appreciate her growth over the course of the story.

I can’t stress enough how refreshing this series is. It’s fun, full of characters that are easy to fall for, but still with enough depth to not be considered fluff. I was convinced that the next couple in the series couldn’t possibly top Kate and Trevor, but now I’m not so sure. I’m torn. Even more so with the stolen moments of those two sprinkled among the pages of this addictive story. Enough that I kind of want to go back and relive their unlikely matchup. Or should I move on to Kate’s sister’s story? Decisions, decisions.

True Devotion is a strong follow up after True North with the secondary character we met previously, Simon and Devon.

Devon is Trevor's sister who is a tough nut and Simon is Trevor's band's guitarist. They have known each other for two years, but all they ever did was trading sarcastic, jabs and sexual innuendos. Is obligatory for them to have hidden attraction towards each other, but it never progress due to their relationship with Trevor. There's this whole bro code about not messing the sister.

Liora Blake had a knack for creating the perfect kind of swoony book boyfriend. Devon always assume Simon is the one-dimensional flirty manwhore cum idiot, but once she gave herself the chance to know the man, she found out that Simon is more than what he seems. I love finding out all of Simon's hidden layer. What I'm surprised the most is he's such a closet geek. I didn't even know my favorite cartoon the Roadrunner's coyote had a full name called 'Wile E. Coyote'. Thanks for that little fun fact, Liora.

As oppose to the perfect hero, Devon is a flawed heroine. Even with Simon's honest declaration, she is always second guessing her self-worth. She is one stubborn woman. She keep thinking them being together is just a pit stop for him before he find the perfect socialite wife. How many times do she needs Simon to prove himself? Gah! She did had some stupidity moment, but thank God she didn't cross my hard limit and manage to redeem herself. Although a bit more grovelling will be better on her part. I guess I did understand where she is coming from, growing up as a white trash in the ghetto make her felt as if she don't deserve to have the perfect guy to love her unconditionally. Despite her flawed though, I still like Devon and I just wish she can see that she deserve to have the best.

This book can work as a standalone, but I just need to gush a bit that I love Trevor's slightly story more. As with Liora Blake's style, she delivered the laugh of loud humor, sexy romance, heartfelt moment and true love to seal the deal.

p/s: I keep waiting for Simon to serenade Devon with his mad guitar skill, but it didn't happen. Why?!

True Devotion (True #2) by Liora Blake

GAH! I just love this author! Can I just stop and tell you how gratifying it is to read a rock star romance where the guy is not a dick? Not covered in groupies, with some kind of addiction, acting as if he owns the world.

Simon is the man every girl should be lucky enough to find: smart, caring, educated – oh,

and did I mention sexy with a side of beefcake? It’s obvious to everyone but Devon that he has been in love with her for years. And Devon? Well, she’s the one with a host of insecurities and self-doubt that has her questioning the ever-charismatic and slightly arrogant Simon.

Funny, snarky, romantic humor. It has excellent chemistry and is a winning addition to the True series! I am a fan of this young author and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

5 ROCK STARS!!

True Devotion? Yeah, probably not from everyone involved in this book. I'll start right away explaining what i liked and what i hated in this read. Some aspects were very beautiful and romantic and others were plainly pitiful.

Devon and Simon share a little slow but sweet romance at least until everything goes up in flames. Devon is the sister of Trevor the singer in the band Simon plays guitar. Simon, is a charming, hot and down to earth geek with the looks and charisma of a model.

Sometimes in a book like this the heroine has every reason to act like an asshole, well not in here. Devon and her badass attitude -which was laughable- were so frustrating that at approximately around 90% i was hoping for Simon to see it and run away from her. Yeah, she is petty, insecure, a pushover and totally bereft of any kind of backbone. Just because your skin is adorned by many intricating tattoos doesn't mean you are mysterious and passionate and daring. Sorry i heard a lot about all of those traits, but i saw none of it.

Simon on the other hand is awesome, i liked him from the beginning. He is so cute, funny and genuine. And although he is such a kid sometimes, he exudes prowess and sexuality, couple all those with a golden heart and you have an awesome combination.

From what i can gather, because i haven't read the first book, something resembling this one happened there too. Everything was going alright until the heroine believed some absolutely circumstantial evidences and started whining about everyone, cut communication and acted so poorly. The same here, can you say blunt and annoying? Over and out!

THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOK

- Stacia and Preston are great.. I like those guys..
- I loved the tattoo Simon got.
- I liked many of their sex scenes.
- Who cares about Lucy?
- I liked that Simon had a cool geeky side.
- Some thing were too random to make sense.
- Trevor and Kate were nice.
- I won't even go near the whole "characters coming in from nowhere and then they disappear" situation.

5 hopelessly devoted stars to Liora Blake's True Devotion. I just keep running around sighing Simon, Simon, Simon. The man is everything you could ever desire and hope for. Blake weaves Devon and Simon's story beautifully with the skill of a master weaver.

Devon and Simon are equals, matched in both passion and wits. Devon doesn't do emotional attachments because of a past that she'd rather forget. She's independent, witty, sarcastic, and blunt. She verbally spars with Simon on the regular and swears she's not attracted to him until two different moments present themselves to which she attempts to throw herself at him. Simon is charming, witty, snarky, and has a filthy mouth. He knows he is a hot commodity but also knows what and who he wants. He wants a relationship and wants it with Devon.

I have to say I have a lot of feelings. This book made me sigh, laugh, snort, and pant. The chemistry between Devin and Simon is off the charts. It was great to see how they progressed from screwing like rabbits to genuinely becoming a part of one another. Simon was so patient and caring that it gave me chest pains. If you can't tell, I'm so totally in love with Simon. The story grew and evolved, taking the characters along with it and shaping them, and ended with the almighty happy ending. If you're looking for a more emotional read which holds you within its clutches, this is the novel for you.

Leigh's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

True North, Ms. Blake’s first book in the True series, was such a treat that I could not wait to get my hands on this second book. My expectations were high because True North was darn near perfect, and thankfully, my wishes were granted. True Devotion was wonderful. With beautifully written characters dripping with sincerity, sweetness and emotion, this book has shown me that her first book was not a fluke; Liora Blake is truly gifted.

For a book where the main character, Simon, is a rock star, I found it interesting that the story was not set on the stage, on tour or anywhere near the spotlight. The story took place in those hours in between when Simon was a real person.

Professing his love and devotion for Devon, the sister of his band mate, Simon was just about as perfect a hero as you could get. He was funny and silly and a world class flirt. But when Devon dug deeper, he was also intelligent, sensitive and level headed. He didn’t play around with emotions but rather laid all of his cards out on the table and let Devon figure out what she needed without any pretense or games on his part.

Devon is similar to her brother, Trevor. Trying to make a life for herself after escaping a childhood of growing up in a poverty, Devon feels that she doesn’t deserve the relationship that is being offered. She is strong and independent, but doesn’t trust what is being handed to her and is reluctant to hand over her heart and expose her vulnerabilities. But without even trying, Simon manages to work his way in. He starts as the man with whom she could not have a conversation without it ending in barbs and sarcasm. But all the passion they put into their snark was a cover for the real feelings that lie beneath.

The chemistry between these two is scorching, and yet the true emotion is beautiful.
Simon doesn’t demand her love, which would scare Devon away. Instead, he listens, he is genuine, and he gives her what she needs simply by paying attention. He is the dream lover everyone hopes to find.

True Devotion can be read as a stand-alone. Simon and Devon were not so integral to the first book that you need to read that to understand anything happening here. But when you find a series with writing this beautiful, I don’t know why you wouldn’t start from the beginning. Creating a story with a love that is at the same time sexy, sweet, dirty and beautiful, I am in love with the True series.

Favorite Quote: “If I wanted to be sexually assaulted by a bottle of awful body spray, Simon, I’d go hump a cologne display in a drugstore.”

Devon Jenkins, sister to famous rock star, Trevor “Trax” Jenkins, has been playing a game with her brother’s sexy infuriating band mate for two years. Every since they met and he tried to lay some cheesy lines on her, it has been an antagonistic relationship in which Devon and Simon bicker, snark, and try to to avoid taking that final step into the unknown. When Devon is hurt in an accident and Simon is the one to care for her, Devon sees the complicated layers that belay his goofy playa’ personae and her resolutions towards him weaken considerably.

Simon Cole is a fun loving, sexy, intelligent, wealthy rockstar whose reputation paints a far different picture than the man we get to know. He has wanted Devon for a long time but her pricky nature and the fact her brother is his best friend has him keeping his distance. When Simon decides to let Devon know his intentions towards her are serious, he finds himself having to not only prove he’s worthy of her love…but that she’s worthy of his.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series-True North. A humorous, sexy, swoony romance that erupts between a rockstar and a widow. I was happy to see Simon and Devon were the next couple to be featured as the antagonistic chemistry between them was intense and begged to be explored. I will be honest and let readers know up front I was not as taken with this book as much as the first one, but I still enjoyed watching the fireworks explode as these two seemingly opposites’ attract each other like moths to a flame.

A groan tumbles out before I can stop it. I just let some poetry reading rich kid eat me out, and I loved it.

Heavily character driven, it’s the vibrant characters and realistic emotions and situations they face that makes the story come to life. Witty banter, steamy sex scenes, and the quiet introspective moments create a romance that perfectly showcases Liora Blake’s appealing voice and talented writing. I enjoy that Blake chooses to explore what is behind the mask of her characters, choosing not to give in to tired tropes and easy predictable behavior. She, like her characters, work hard at showing us the little nuances and quirky behavior that we all experience when striving to find and be in a relationship.

I’m scared to death I might want this. For real. Until it makes us whole again.

Our heroine Devon Jenkins has issues. Serious issues. Stubborn, passionate, snarky, and troubled, Devon hits first, then runs. Raised in a trailer park and referred to a ‘white trash’ growing up, she has self-esteem issues that eat at her day in and day out. Though she, like her brother, managed to claw her way out and make something of herself, she forever sees herself as undeserving, flawed, and unworthy. Able to maintain professional relationships with no problem, it’s the personal ones that give her the hives. Factor in she was in an abusive relationship for three years and her walls are thick, high, and covered in thorns.

Simon Cole was a joy to meet. Though he puts on a good show as the typical womanizing, opportunist, rock star; in reality he is smart, geeky, romantic, very talented, and comes from an upper crust background. He’s a multitude of contradictions. One minute he’s whispering erotic nothings in her ear and the next he’s reading her obscure poetry. He plays hardcore guitar and classical piano. He’s worth millions but sleeps on pink cotton unicorn sheets. He is honest to a fault and gives with his whole heart.

Watching these two fall in love is both funny and sad. Sexually they are in their element. Explosive chemistry leads to some pretty incredible mattress dancing and lots of laughs.

Dear Fellow Board Members:

I take full responsibility for making Simon late for your fancy meeting.
The problem is he’s a sex goddess. Yes, goddess. Sometimes he giggles like a schoolgirl when we’re through. He tried to leave this morning, at a very responsible early hour, but I had to have him again. The man can fuck like nobody’s business.
Please send him back as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Ms. Devon Jenkins

Their journey to their happily ever after is littered with man-made pitfalls-aka-Devon. Her multi layered self-esteem issues play a recurring role in her attempts to self sabotage her and Simon’s relationship. No matter what he does, she always waits for the other shoe to drop. For him to realise she is not worth his time. Heartbreaking and frustrating, you can’t help but want to shake her, hug her, and make her understand that she is worthy of Simon’s time. Worthy of his love. Worthy of happiness.

“I’ve been trying to be patient with you, not push, but we can’t grow this thing if you won’t let me in. I just want you to give me something-”

We see old and new friends aplenty though I did feel this one focused more on the couple then book one did. Kate and Trevor are a strong supporting cast along with Miss McKenna who is firmly Team Simon. I loved the introduction of Stacia and Preston and I hope we see more of them in the future. Their love of freshly made bread is quite amusing. Family continues to play a strong role in the series which I love. Too often, especially in rockstar romances, family members are often portrayed as leeches or screw ups who bring down rather than lift up their famous relative. I like that Blake shows family can be supportive and relatively normal.

The book does slow down considerably due to Devon’s issues. Devon’s internal monologue about her insecurities and jealousy does get a bit irritating because she rehashes the same issues over and over with no real steps of moving forward. I felt at times her issues overshadowed the storyline and Simon. I was disappointed with both the plot devices introduced towards the end to push Devon into making a decision about her and Simon. One didn’t make any sense and the other was nothing more than a manipulation that felt a little wrong considering what we knew of them. I would have understood more if there was a real defining moment or epiphany gleaned from the ordeal.

Regardless, True Devotion is an entertaining follow-up to True North; proving Liora Blake didn’t fall victim to the sophomoric slump. Fans of troubled heroines and adorable heroes will enjoy this snarky, humorous, antagonistic, and sweetly dirty romantic story. I look forward to the final book in this series-True Divide- is Kate’s sister Lucy’s story. YAY!! True Divide releases October 15, 2015.

4.5 Crazysauce Stars

28 year old Devon Jenkins, sister to the famous Trax aka Trevor Jenkins from True North , has a wall around her. And for the past two years she's used that wall and her snark to keep any potential relationship at arms length. That wall definitely extends to resident manwhore and her brothers guitar player, Simon. In fact they seem to revel in their banter. But at her brother's wedding to Kate, feeling a little lonely and infused with a bottle of champagne, Devon takes a chance and offers herself to Simon for one night. To her utter horror and embarrassment, he declines. Avoiding him for a few months afterwards, they are thrown together again, when he helps her out after an accident. Devon makes one more effort at seduction, where Simon explains that he doesn't just want one night with her. When she can give him what he wants, he will be ready for her.

This starts some fun and wacky moments of great one-liners and funny banter between the two of them. Hiding their relationship from Trevor, but getting to know each other in every way. Devon learns that Simon isn't just an idiot, manwhore musician. Simon learns that he may have found what his father had with his mother, but Devon has deep seated issues from her past that need to be worked through. Can he get the woman he wants? Can she move beyond her past to have the relationship she deserves?

"God doesn't give with both hands, baby. But I think you just discovered that Simon does." ~ Simon

I loved Devon's relationship with Stacia and her husband, Preston. The scene with the bread was priceless.
"I have to go find some butter and a quiet space to eat myself into a coma."

Getting a little more of Trevor and Kate was great as well. I laughed my ass off when she won Devon over with by her getting Simon to stop dousing himself with cologne, getting Trevor in line from acting like a child and just pretty much being sweet Kate.

I really liked this installment. The books are definitely getting better, and I liked the first one. I really like Ms. Blake's style of getting the couples together. Although I still have issues with their conflicting moment, as I did with the first book. The conflict doesn't seem so big that it should cause the problems it does. They seem to be so good at communicating until the big conflict then it all just falls apart. But since I'm not in a relationship, I guess I have no point of reference. ;-)

I also love all the cute references. Like the cupcake text and the poetry reading. I could use so many gifs to reference this book, but I didn't because it would be crazy long...though I wanted to.

I'm definitely looking forward to the last book in the series and hoping the author is writing other stories. She's becoming an author I will have to check out as new material is released.

Yea! This book is really lovely with a reluctant, witty, assertive massage therapist heroine and sexy sunny hot nerdy rock star hero in pursuit.

This is a wonderful character driven romance that sides steps drama until the end where it stumbles a bit with plot moves that were not needed but overall the chemistry and banter between the couple is so delicious.

A very satisfying romance.

I loved this book there was humor and Simon who can be cocky, "no need to crucify me just because you got caught eating me up with your eyes, baby. I didn’t mind one bit." He's one of those men that don't like when their women sneak out of bed in the middle of the night, "which required you to get dressed and leave? Maybe you didn’t notice, but I have running water. You just needed to trot your a** out to the kitchen and turn the tap on. Then get back in bed with me." He's a take charge kind of guy when it comes to protection , "are you on something? We can’t have any little Simons and Devons running around yet." He doesn't mind asking the hard questions, "on a scale of one to ten, how screwed up is it that all I want to do right now is eff like mad until we’re both dizzy and covered in sweat?" He can be a little kid at times, "with a little grin, he waits for me to give him a nod. “Can I screw you over the back of my dirt bike sometime?" I really loved this book it kept me entertained

I liked the first book, and I wanted to like this one too. But I just couldn't get past the sample. The h is way too potty-mouthed for my liking. Yeah I don't care about some swearing at tense moments etc, but a h who just frequently drops all of these words in everyday conversation. Just no. I know this one isn't for moi.

I loved this book! I am a sucker for a wonderful romance and this book has everything you love about a love story. A wonderful guy who truly is devoted to his woman. A woman who is looking for the right guy but just doesn't know it yet.

While this story does have some drama, there is only one small section and it is over rather quickly. I love the way the author gives the guy the all in and this book showcases the fun and teasing humor of the characters. There are some great laughs and smiles to be had in this book. It is a wonderful, good feeling read that offers a ton of steam and heat, but some love and tenderness too. Destined to make you sigh a few times!

Both characters have some baggage to deal with but they are learned to trust and work together for the long haul. I just loved how they work together and I think the author has created awesome characters that you would want to actually be around, if they were real people. Liora Blake is one to watch for sure. Pre-order and pick up this new release along with the first one, True North. Plus, keep your eyes out for the third stand alone coming in the fall! I cannot wait!

I wouldn't call the start of the book to be a romance per-say as the heroine isn't with the hero till a long way off and we basically see who she is. Hell we even read about her going on dates & sleep with another man (but h/H are not a couple and she only finds him attractive--not a detailed scene btw). The heroine has a very limited view of the hero, but as the book goes along she has to let go of her blinders and see he is not just a pretty face that women fall over, he has felt loss, is smart, sweet and kind. Honestly, the hero was way more nice and pleasing than the heroine. He is upfront that he isn't looking for a wham-bham thank-you-mam and is nice to her even when she does a hit-and-run their first time. He was way more nicer and patient with her than she deserved. The heroine with all her confidence was basically a very insecure small-town girl still being haunted by her teenaged relationship and I hated how she treated the hero at the end, allowing her ex to stay with her etc. and freezing out the hero. He should have made her grovel more.

True Devotion is the delightful second installment in Liora Blake's marvelous True series featuring Devon Jenkins and Simon Cole (secondary characters from book one, True North). It is another charming romance with deliciously witty banter and smokin' hot love scenes but it also features a thought-provoking storyline that is poignant and heartwarming.

Devon and Simon have known each other for two years and their interactions have been limited to exchanges that are witty, sarcastic and full of sexual innuendo. Believing that Simon is nothing but a flirtatious manwhore who is not looking for anything more serious than a quick lay, Devon stays away from him as much as possible. Of course, underlying all of their encounters is a simmering attraction that Devon ignores until she drunkenly propositions Simon at her brother's wedding. Gentleman that he is, Simon politely declines her offer, but now that they have acknowledged their mutual desire, it is inevitable that they will finally act on it.

Devon is independent, feisty and snarky, but underneath her hard exterior, she is also vunerable and a little fragile. Although she now has a successful career as a massage therapist, she still carries a few scars from her poverty-stricken childhood. An abusive relationship was the impetus for her to follow her brother to California, but she has never really dealt with the emotional fallout from her past and when things are going well with Simon, she lets her fears get in the way of her happiness.

Simon is a fantastic character. He is fun, flirty and playful but he also has hidden depths that Devon has never bothered to discover. Beneath his surface charm is a man who has suffered a tremendous loss but he does not let this define who he is or keep him from taking emotional risks. He is comfortable with himself and this confidence is very sexy. Simon is patient with Devon but when he needs to, he pushes her to be as honest with him as he has been with her.

The relationship between Simon and Devon is absolutely wonderful. There is plenty of chemistry between them and their encounters are lusty and playful but there is also an underlying emotional connection as well. Devon is initially uncomfortable with this unexpected closeness, but she gradually begins to enjoy this aspect of their budding romance. However, right from the start, Simon is much more invested in their relationship and it is almost painful watching Devon remain emotionally distant from him. When doubts creep in, she reverts to old habits and she comes very close to letting her unresolved issues destroy their chance at happiness.

True Devotion is a scorching hot romance that has appealing characters and an entertaining storyline. The main protagonists are multi-layered with realistic flaws and issues to overcome. It is a super sweet and delectably naughty addition to Liora Blake's True series that old and new fans are going to love!

PJV Quickie: Coming off the high of True North, I was worried about the dreaded Sophomore Slump. I am happy to report this was not the case and I adored True Devotion!

Review:
You'd never guess now, but Devon Jenkins has lived a hard life. She grew up in poverty, but since her brother Trevor's band (Trevor is the hero in True North) hit the big time, she's living in L.A. now. She's turned her life around and gotten away from some bad decisions in her past - she's a massage therapist and she loves to bake in her spare time. She loves her brother and puts up with his band-mate, Simon. Does she have a thing for Simon? Well, sure - Simon is hot, so hot, but he flirts with anything in a skirt. So, no, she's going there and getting her heart broken.

Simon Cole is in Trevor's band, Trax. He's had a thing for Devon, but he knows she's off limits because she's Trevor's sister. Instead he takes what is offered by willing women, but they're nothing real for him - Devon could be. When Devon offers him a drunken one-night stand after Trevor's wedding, Simon tells her no - not until she's ready to make it real.
~~~~~
I loved True North, the first book in this series, and couldn't wait to read cocky, flirty Simon's book. I wasn't too sure about Devon, as she seemed kind of angry and stand off-ish, but that really was not the case here. Once you understand her background and her feelings for her brother, her actions in True North make much more sense.
OMG y'all - Simon and Devon had CHEMISTRY: Simmering, smoldering, sensual chemistry. I loved the back-and-forth between these two, and how they both have a great sense of humor. Their personalities were well-matched, and once they both decided to go for it, they were fabulous together. Simon only had eyes for Devon, and all he wanted to do was make her happy. Devon had a few bumps on the way - her past made her resistant to relationships and she didn't feel worthy of Simon's love and affection. And while I didn't understand her turn towards self-destruction, I do know that it happens in real life and it felt authentic to this reader.
True Devotion had a tiny bit more of the "rock star" life in it than True North did, and I enjoyed seeing the guys doing their thing. We also get to catch up with Trevor and Kate, so that was like seeing old friends again. (Don't worry, it can be read as a stand-alone.) My only complaint with the story is that it followed the same type of story arc as True North, although the different characters were enough to keep it interesting for this reader.
Liora Blake is on my "writers to watch" list and I am excitedly looking forward to the third book in this series, True Divide, which will be out in October.
Is it October yet?
Review by Karen
I loved True Devotion (True Series Book #2) by Liora Blake, as the book has a realistic quality to the characters that is lacking in a lot of girl meets rocker books.  This is the second book in the True Series, but the first book True North, does not need to be read to understand this book. There are crossover characters from book one, but the plot is independent of the first book.  The plot of this story revolves around Devon Jenkins, the sister of Trevor Jenkins, the rockstar brother featured in True North and Simon Cole, Trevor's bandmate and guitarist.  Devon and Simon verbally spare with each other in the first book and the verbal sparing and sexual tension is more than evident in their story.  Devon does not want to get involved in a relationship with the manwhore Simon, in fact the girl does not want to be in a relationship with anyone, and hasn't been since she moved to L.A. five years ago.   Simon on the other had is supposed to be a manwhore, and yes in book one he made lewd and dirty flirty comments in the book; but his manwhore ways were never adequately established.  In this book Simon is anything but a manwhore, and it is Devon's preconception of him; that she used to keep herself isolated from him.  The way Blake has written Simon, makes him the ultimate book boyfriend, except he can't cook; but who needs this considering what he can do in the bedroom, study, kitchen, bathroom...... I'll just eat some cereal!
Here is where I hang my head and whine, as the book up until the end was a five star read.  Then I had a 'what the hell' moment when I was ninety percent done with the book.  I thought the last ten percent of the book, was useless, and ruined the story for me.  It took this book from five stars to four, it downgraded it so much; because yes I could understand Devon's anxiety; but then she goes and does something completely out of character; I was stunned and horrified.
So what to do, I adore this book, but be warned about he WTH, moments at the end of the book.  The WTH moment felt contrived, and inserted for no other reason, than to throw angst into a wonderful story.
True Devotion (#2) was a take it or leave it read for me. There were parts of the story that I liked and parts of the story that I was ready to take a break on. I found it to be a bit raw, a little repetitive, and slightly annoying.
About the Characters ->
Devon: This character was fiesty, stubborn, passionate, and troubled. She had a hard time moving beyond her past and her mistakes. She felt unworthy and did not think she deserved better than what she grew up exposed too. She was assured with her personal interests, yet she lacked confidence when it came to having a meaningful relationship with Simon. I liked her a lot, but she also got on my nerves...a lot.
Simon: This was such a cool character. He had so many layers. One minute he was hardcore sexy and the next he was a sensitive romantic. One minute he was a giant pain and the next he was an endearing poet. He was loyal, devoted to his causes, and definitely enthralled with Devon. I loved this guy. He was so brave and caring and honest and just straight up. I really liked that he was not afraid to get up in Devon's face, while at the same time, he respected her and was mindful of her limits.
Devon and Simon as a Couple: These two certainly had chemistry. They seemed to have fun together after they legitimately took a step toward each other. They were different but that did not work against them. They really did not have major conflict in the way I would have thought they would.
Kate & Trevor: I loved these two from jump. It was cool to see them again in this story. They added flavor to this story.
Kyle: What a butthead! Hello. Goodbye. The end.
Stacia & Preston: Even though these were minor characters, they were interesting. Stacia grabbed my attention. I would love to know her story.
McKenna: I loved the way she described Simon. She seems like such a cutie pie.
All in all, this was a fairly good read.
I loved Devon and simon even more then the last book when they were introduced. They have funny banter and you can tell they are a lot like each other. Simon is just the sweetest and so adorable with Devon. I liked that finally you get to see a different side to Devon and realize that she isn't as tough as she seems. I was hoping to see who the next book would be about but they didn't really make it noticeable. This is a bother great wonderfully written book in this series and I'm so glad I decided to read it. I love the characters and how they all connect and come together.
4.5 rounded up to 5, and I very seldom give 5 stars to begin with, only to those books I feel I'll want to read again.
*sighs* The writing, people, the WRITING was so good! It checked all the boxes for me, witty dialogue, hot & sexy hero, witty and strong heroine, great writing, just everything to me was IT.
Liora Blake, I don't know where you've been hiding, but you have a new fan in me. LOVED this, can't wait for the 3rd book in this series!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND to any romance fan.
Not as Good as First
While this story was good, it wasn't as good as book one. The story seemed to drag in the middle. It does though pick back up at the end.
Excellent 2nd book
Devon and Simon are great! He's amazing for/to her. I love getting to know more about characters we met in the first book. Simon is so much more than we saw in book one, although we got some good peeks into him...
★★★★ 1/2
After reading True North, I knew I had to read True Devotion because I have become addicted to this series.
True Devotion focus's on Simon and Devon (Trevor's sister) and it is absolutely amazing. This book starts at the wedding between Kate and Trevor, and Devon trying to ignore her attraction to Simon, something she's been doing for the past two years. These two definitely have an interesting way of showing their feelings, because they are always fighting and bickering and making sexual innuendos.
When these two finally decide to give it a go, you can see how resistant Devon is to feel anything for Simon, where Simon really does wear his heart on his sleeve. I fell hard for Simon's character. He may have a reputation, but the way he is with Devon makes you swoon. When he goes after her, and takes her on a date, I was like YES, but Devon keeps a part of her hidden, and this part is self destructive and ends up causing problems between these two.
I loved how patient Simon was with Devon, he knew what he wanted from her, and her catching up to him was wonderful to read. These two definitely have chemistry, and they are definitely compatible (even if Devon can't see it) and their banter is quite hilarious at times. I did want to yell and scream at Devon though for how she treated and pushed Simon away a lot through this book. I understand why she was as guarded as she was, having been through what she had been through, but Simon was nothing but honest with her and what he wanted.
One of my favorite parts of this book was when Trevor finds out about these two. The shock and anger he showed was crazy, but it was how Simon reacted that finally drove home how much he really cared about Devon. I enjoyed getting peaks into what was going on with Trevor and Kate as well, but I truly loved Simon and Devon's story. Each of them have a past that is brutal, even if it's for different reasons, but one of them deals with them a lot better than the other.
These two definitely belong together, and even if it takes a while for them to get there I'm glad with how things ended with these two. Simon is not that big bad rock star that he comes off as, he is a geek and I think that made him even more lovable. I kind of want sheets like his are described in this book, because they are kind of amazing!
Loira Blake has written a series and characters that are hard to forget, and as much as I loved True North, I loved True Devotion even more. Simon is just amazing, and Devon is a strong character who just needs someone to give her a push to live how she should be and to feel again. This series is amazing, and I love how each book can be read as a stand alone, but we get glimpses into the previous couples life as well. If you're looking for a hot read that will have you laughing out loud and falling for the hot guitarist, definitely pick this one up today. This series is stunning and I can't wait for Lacey's story!
I was so excited to read this book after loving the first book in the series, True North. While there were some minor issues, I really enjoyed the book and this author’s writing.
Devon Jenkins has a pretty sweet life right now, courtesy of her rockstar brother, Trevor. It’s a far cry away from the way they grew up in the ghetto, but she still can’t shake the lessons learned there. In the ghetto, you learn to keep everyone at arm’s length because you never know their agenda or what they want from you.
Simon Cole has been half in love with his best friend and bandmate’s prickly sister since he met her. Respecting bro code, he’s kept their relationship to an endless supply of half-baked come-ons and snarky banter. Simon is hopeful to try to finally make things real with Devon after seeing Trevor let down his shields and find happiness in marriage. Simon knew that trying to prove to Devon he is serious about a real relationship would be difficult, but he never thought she would have to be convinced that she deserved love.
Devon will not be everyone’s cup of tea. She’s surly and emotionally handicapped and does a bang of job of jettisoning herself. I, myself, have a soft spot for those type of women. Devon has had a rough life, some of it by circumstance and some of it by choices she made. Her scars are very deep. Once you get past the rough exterior, there is such fragile vulnerability you can’t help but want to help and hold the person.
This is exactly what Simon sees in Devon and he is just the perfect match for her. Simon was an absolute joy to read. He’s smart and funny and just a ray of sunshine. He opens himself fully and immediately to Devon, even knowing she may very well crush him. Their sexy times are hot and very sexy.
The main issue that tripped me up was Devon’s internal narrative got completely in the way of letting the story play out. I understand she was dealing with heavy emotional baggage but saying the same thing for the 15th time just gets boring. I also thought the conflict device was out of character and a bit of a cop-out.
Loved seeing Trevor and Kate in the mix of the story and the addition of Stacia and Preston was adorable. It was interesting to see more of Trevor and Kate’s mom and how alike Devon is to her. The next book features Lucy, Kate’s sister, and her past lover – I can’t wait!
Though I didn’t like it as much as True North, this was certainly a solid and enjoyable read. I recommend this book for those who enjoy snarky sexy contemporary romance with a charming indefatigable hero and his complicated vulnerable heroine.
My Review:
Okay, this is another winner, but I will admit to being doubtful for the first 15% of the book. For some reason, I had a hard time getting into this one, but once I hit that 15% point, I didn't want to put it down anymore. So the moral here...keep with this one...because the payoff is really, really worth it. OMG, I cannot tell you how much I love Simon...but I'm going to try.
The book is told entirely from Devon's point of view, but it's Simon who makes this book. For two years, Simon has been trying to get into Devon's panties. He's in her brother's band and is an unapologetic man-whore. According to Devon, he will bang anything with a vagina. But it soon becomes clear that Devon has some preconceived notions that are so, so wrong.
I loved the way that the author wrote Simon. No, you never get to visit his mental state, but you see so much of what he's feeling just through what Devon observes...even when she doesn't see it. He comes across as this laid-back player, but he's so into Devon and wants her so much. She's never even considered him, but as the story develops, it becomes obvious that he's thought about her a LOT over the last two years. His interest in her is real...it's not just about sex and that's so freaking attractive. I loved Simon.
But as more and more is revealed about Simon, Devon changes her tune about him. Now it's not that she doesn't want to get involved with a player, it's an issue that she's not good enough for him. I love that he seems like something so different from what he is. Simon has a ton of layers and each one makes him more and more attractive.
I really, truly enjoyed the book. I hated what Devon did at the end (don't worry....no spoilers), but I wanted to cheer when Simon pointed out the reality of her actions. So, so true. I also loved the influence of the tattoos on the story. For both of these characters, their tattoos are a huge part of who they are and how they've gotten to where they're at and the visuals of them...both on their bodies and getting them were a great detail in the story. I also loved Devon's baking...her cookies and breads. There were just some great little details to this story.
I highly recommend this one!
4.5 Fangs
Devon Jenkins is trying to move forward. She dates guys who don't intimidate her. She stays away from anyone who can really hurt her. She has scars from her last real relationship when she placed her trust in the wrong hands. For the last two years, she has been attracted to the guitar player from her brother's band, Simon. However, she keeps him at arms length to avoid developing feelings for him.
Simon Cole is Trex's manwhore guitarist. Or so he wants people to think. The reality is different. Simon has experienced loss, he has a good heart and he volunteers to help people in need. He likes to read, play the piano and has a geeky side. He also has been waiting for the chance to make Devon really look at him beyond the guy who she likes to spar words with. Simon has been patient and he knows his reward is coming.
~~
I love True North and I knew I liked Liora Blake's writing style. I couldn't wait to read Simon and Devon's story. I knew some things about Simon but in True Devotion, I got to know him pretty well. He was sweet, tender, smart and nothing like the player I thought he was.
Devon was scared of getting hurt again. She had trouble with her self worth and was constantly second guessing Simon's intentions. It takes someone as patient as Simon to show her that she could open her heart to love again. He was truly devoted to making her feel special. He was also pretty hot, making their love story pretty spicy.
Cliffhanger: No
