After years of feeling alone, raised apart and in the wrong world, the twin sisters reunite, discovering their home and their To restore the world, they must overcome the twist and turns of their new world to travel to the Center of Magic, resetting the balance.
Awesome book. Amazing magical adventure with a great story to go along with it. The characters and I mean all of them are very interesting and loved getting to know them all
I really enjoyed the twins finding each other not knowing that the other existed. They seemed to have instantly bonded. Family is very important especially when you don't feel like you are part of the family you are living with as each twin felt. They had an incredible journey to complete and cut off from Queen June, their mentor, they had to learn to trust what they had been taught and keep going forward. They met many along the journey that helped them even though it might mean the end of those strangers lives. I look forward to book 2.
Today, I am reviewing the YA portal fantasy story The Mansion’s Twins by Rose Channing. The first in the At The Crossworlds series, we get pulled into the lives of two ordinary teenagers who discover they have extraordinary powers. Fleeing from their unpleasant and borderline abusive home lives, Ellie and Savannah, aged 14, learn that they are unwitting refugees from a world of magic, and that it lies in their hands to save it from itself. I give this book a solid 4/5. Here is my breakdown.
Characters: 4/5. I found Channing’s characterizations interesting and well played. She added a large cast to the story, which can get a little confusing when they’re introduced rapid-fire, but did a good job of delineating and clarifying who is who and what each of them could do. I could have used more clear descriptions of the gifts and magical talents that each knew, but overall I feel this is a strength of the novel.
Plot/Storyline: 4/5 Classic portal fantasy – kids brought from our mundane world into a magnificent, wondrous place filled with magic, but they have to save it, and they’re the only ones who can do so. But classic doesn’t mean boring, and the world that Channing has created weaves itself into the storyline like a tapestry. I enjoyed it very much.
Flow: 5/5. Another strength, and always a pleasure when done right. This book was fairly long for a YA intro book, but it blew by very quickly. Channing does her pacing right, keeping us in suspense just long enough before the reveals, and ratcheting up the tension at the right times. Well done!
Spelling/Grammar: 3/5. I noticed several typos, many that could be attributed to autocorrect error or which were simply missing words. Another run through by a good proofreader would clear up almost everything.
Overall: 4.5. A real treat. I haven’t read YA in a long time (most of my submissions are adult fantasy/sci-fi) and I’m pleased to recommend Rose Channing and The Mansion’s Twins. Pick up this book if you want realistic characters, an intriguing storyline, and a great time.
The Mansion's Twins is a children's story about twins Ellie and Savannah who have unique abilities. Together, they venture into a world of magic, coming to a special mansion where their abilities are nurtured. Unbeknown to them, the twins have a purpose to fulfil, once they are ready to do so. The world is in great turmoil and only Ellie and Savannah can restore the balance and calm the storm. Their destiny is to venture to the mysterious 'centre of magic' to accomplish this goal.
This book is a portal fantasy in the vein of The Chronicles of Narnia, and while it never quite hits those heights, it certainly has its charm. The writing is basic in a way that is necessary to appeal to youngsters, but in doing so, will probably deter most adults. This is one of those kids books that is definitely just for the kids.
The characters ooze charm and the development of Ellie and Savannah from children into heroines is well-handled. Events are imaginative enough to maintain interest levels, but there is little we have not seen before.
The Mansion's Twins is a book your girls will probably enjoy, and the protagonists make for good role models. That alone is enough to make this one worthy of checking out.
An enchanting and enjoyable story, which I imagine, would appeal to younger teens and the simplified writing style suggests that this is the intended audience. Although at just over 400 pages, it may be a bit long for young readers.
There were a lot of different characters, with different magical abilities, which got a bit confusing at times, although they were brought to life quite well. The main characters, Ellie and Savannah, were well written and grew emotionally (and magically) through the book. I'm sure that teenage girls will find them easy to relate to.
The plot was well thought out and had enough action and intrigue to keep me reading.
This is definitely a YA read and I know my younger self would have just loved this when I was starting to get into the more fantasy books. The pace of the book was pretty good, you learn about what happened the Mansions world in the past steadily though out the book and you get to know the characters well. As it is written for younger people I found there were times I would skim read a bit however I think any young person looking for a great fantasy read would love this. I only wish there was a bit more to them finding the center of magic as it felt like it was only a small part of the book even though it was so pivotal? but still a great read.
I really enjoyed reading the Mansion's Twins. The idea of having a long lost separated twin, and then finding out you have magical powers is a child's dream. This book really brought out my inner child. It had me laughing, crying and wishing it would never end. The amount of characters at times confused me, but I soon learnt to remember who was who and what powers they had. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who like magic.
Ellie was my favourite of the twins. She's more outgoing than her sister Savannah, but also mischievous. It finished with a cliffhanger, leaving me wanting more.
Not knowing this book was more for children I had a hard time inching into it. It reminded me of The Chronicles of Narnia with its use of magic and this new world opening to the two main characters Ellie and Savannah. They leaving an abusive family to find this new world opening up them with a great new purpose. They must journey to the Centre of magic. It was good read over all but again more for kids then adults.
I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review. It was a little confusing in the beginning but I found it to be enjoyable overall. I would recommend it for young adults and up. :)
I loved this book! The two main characters Ellie and Savannah who are twins are on a quest to save the world. Need I say more? If you love magic and quests, excellent writing and strong female characters then this is the book for you.
