SO. I actually loved this book. Like, ABSOLUTELY loved it. I haven’t read a crime thriller told from the detectives’ POVs, so when I say I was hooked… I was hooked.

The story follows a brutal murder that quickly reveals itself to be far from random. As detectives uncover a disturbing video tied to the victim, it becomes clear that this case is part of something much darker and that whoever is responsible isn’t finished yet. As the investigation unfolds, secrets surface, patterns emerge, and the past starts creeping into the present.

What really stood out to me was how immersive this book felt. I genuinely felt like I was on the journey with the characters, like an outside investigator trying to piece together clues alongside them. The way information is revealed makes you think and question everything.

Both Greyson and Lyra are such compelling characters. They each carry ghosts from their pasts, and you can feel that in their personalities, their instincts, and the choices they make throughout the investigation. Their internal struggles added depth to the story, and I loved how that emotional weight was woven naturally into the case.

And the slow-burn chemistry between them? So well done. It never overshadowed the investigation but instead ran quietly beneath it, adding tension and intrigue without feeling forced.

One of my favourite things was that, with the information we’re given, I actually felt like I nailed the reveal right alongside Greyson and Lyra, and I loved that. It was like a lightbulb that went off and it was satisfying.

The epilogue was perfect and now I’m sitting here hoping and praying that we get to explore THAT case in a book two, because I am not done with these characters.

I’d 100% recommend this to anyone who enjoys crime thrillers especially if you like investigative stories that make you feel involved rather than just along for the ride. It’s an easy, gripping, and very enjoyable read.
Would I reread it? Absolutely. BUT I need to know what happens next! 🤣

I found this book through the author messaging me on TikTok to promote the book & I’m so glad she did!

This book had me absolutely hooked!

The overall plot was insane, the pacing was never boring and not once did I think “can we move it along?”- in a lot of murder mysteries, sometimes it can feel repetitive or boring, not with this book. Each chapter added to the mystery and had you guessing constantly.

The two main characters both had their own pasts which were dripped in slowly to the story and added further questions as the story went on & really kept you thinking.

Mixing romance elements into a thriller was something I haven’t seen before but worked so well, and didn’t take away from the thriller aspect at all!

Overall, smashed this book out, the end plot twist was great, I had a great time reading this

I feel as though I devoured this book.
I have just finished it and my heart rate is yet to return to normal. Often I find that thrillers rarely thrill, but this one really stressed me out (In a really good way!)
I loved that the author drip feeds you enough information that you gradually peel away the clues and come to identify the murderer along with the characters. The book didnt hide any action from the case off page, which as a reader I love as it kept us along with the whole journey.
The story was so compelling, the main characters were both so interesting and I'm so ready to read more about them and their past lives. I particularly enjoyed the dual pov which I havent encountered much in this genre but it really added to the case progression and the progression of their partnership.
The subject matter is intense and the crimes in the book are brutal. That being said the author handled this with sensitivity and the ending of the book has a sense of being a hollow victory for our protagonists.
Women are placed firmly at the heart of this story, their pain, suffering, anger and strength are solid themes that the author explores. As mentioned above, it is one to take note of the trigger warnings, but it is a great example of the genre. Excited to read more from this series!

Heart beating fast, pulse racing, not sure what is coming next………. Not the characters in this book, but me reading it. A killer is on the loose, always one step ahead, why? How? WHO?? This gripping suspenseful thriller left me questioning everything and everyone. When everything finally gets revealed, the surprise was WTF?! How had I not figured it out? I am normally good at guessing the real murderer straight away, but the way this was written proper got me. A really good read, gruesome and full of action. Read it with care as it does contain sensitive topics, but my god, was it a good read!

This was an incredible psychological thriller that kept me hooked from beginning to end. The author did a remarkable job of building tension and creating a deeply immersive atmosphere, where every twist felt both surprising and believable.

The sensitive topics were handled extremely well and you could tell they were well thought out. Rather than using them for shock value, the author explored them with care and nuance, adding emotional depth and authenticity to the characters. This made the narrative not only gripping but also meaningful.

The character development was compelling, and the psychological elements were executed brilliantly. The romance element added another layer to the characters, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I would absolutely love to see this adapted into a Netflix series, it has all of the elements for a gripping watch. Very excited for the second book!

I really enjoyed this book- it has everything you would want from a book of this genre.
It’s obvious Kate is knowledgeable in this area as everything was correct and made sense- nothing was unbelievably dramatic.
The characters were all likeable apart from a couple.
It was fast paced, action packed and kept me guessing right till the end.
Really looking forward to her next book 💗

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from the very first page; it was an addictive read from start to finish. The story is told through the dual POVs of two detectives working a murder case, and the slight slow-burn romance between them was a fantastic touch. The plot twists were incredible, I never knew what was coming next. Every chapter ended with so much anticipation that I found myself racing to find out what the duo would uncover next. This book was truly amazing, I was completely hooked! I only wish I could forget everything just to experience reading it for the first time!

What a wild ride this book was!
I love a good mystery thriller, and this one has definitely earned a place on my favourites list. I genuinely could not put it down — I stayed up until midnight just to finish it on a work night, and that says a lot!
The plot was brilliantly written and kept me guessing at every turn about who the murderer might be. When the reveal finally came, I was actually right about who it was! Not going to lie, it felt pretty amazing to know my detective instincts were on point. Maybe I was a detective in a past life. 🤣
Alongside the mystery, we also get a developing romance between the two main leads, Greyson and Lyra. The story dives into their pasts as well, touching on elements of trauma and giving more depth to their characters. I'm really hoping we get to explore more of their history in the next book.
The other characters in the book like Billy and Luke were also very likeable.
There are some sexual themes in the story, but Kate handled them well and they fit naturally within the narrative.
Overall, this was a fantastic read and I can't wait for the next book in the series. 👌

I was very lucky to have received an ARC of this book.

Sinister Innocence by Kate Hopcraft completely hooked me from the start. I genuinely couldn’t put it down — the tension builds so well. I loved how it explores innocence and the grey moral reasoning of the characters, which made them feel so human and real. It’s dark, psychological, and keeps you guessing. I kept thinking about it long after I’d finished and I can’t wait for the sequel. Such a gripping, twisty read — I flew through it!
P.S Greyson is a hotty which is always nice…

Well.. where do I start?

I absolutely devoured Sinister Innocence by Katie Hopcraft.

From the get go, the start of this series has been gripping and fast-paced, following DCI Greyson Spencer and his “rookie” partner, DC Lyra Fellows. I am HOOKED.

What started as the murder of a “prominent businessman” quickly untangles into something far more disturbing and substantially darker, raising the urgency and the stakes with every passing chapter.

As the pressure mounts on our MCs and another body appears, the race for answers and justice becomes incredibly intense and has left this an impossible read to put down - I’ve been on the edge of my seat for most of it!!

As mentioned previously, the story is dark (so definitely check the trigger warnings!), twisty, and heaving with momentum. And that twist - THAT TWIST!! I was genuinely both shocked and thrilled; I thought I had it all figured out… turns out I was completely wrong, and I loved every second of that realisation.

The characters are beautifully crafted: relatable, layered, and easy to root for. The mentor/rookie dynamic works beautifully, the police work feels well researched, and the way Hopcraft explores and approaches these darker topics has been brilliant.

My favourite quote sums up the tone perfectly: “If you’re going to make me a piece in your game, don’t be surprised if I decide to play.”

Sinister Innocence was such an incredible read, sharp and emotionally charged, and I’m genuinely so excited to return to these characters in the next books.

A young woman’s murder draws detectives into a dark, twisting case where secrets run deep, everyone is a suspect, and the truth is far more disturbing than it first appears.

If you love a crime thriller that completely pulls you in, Sinister Innocence by Kate Hopcraft is one to add to your list immediately.

From the very first page, it gave me major BBC crime drama vibes—honestly, I’d watch this in a heartbeat if it ever got picked up (and it absolutely should👀). It’s immersive in that way where you don’t feel like you’re just reading—you feel like you’re working the case alongside the detectives, piecing everything together clue by clue.

The plot is packed with twists and turns, but what really stood out to me is how natural and well-earned those twists felt. Nothing was thrown in just for shock value—it all builds in a way that keeps you questioning literally everyone. Even when I started to suspect the killer(s), it didn’t take away from the experience at all (if anything, it made it more satisfying watching everything unfold 👏).

The writing itself is genuinely beautiful and polished, especially for a debut. It flows so easily that you’ll probably end up doing the classic “just one more chapter”… and then suddenly you’re halfway through the book.

One of my favourite elements was the slow-burn romance running quietly underneath the investigation. It never overshadows the main story (which I loved), but it adds just enough tension and emotional depth to make you even more invested in the characters. That balance is so hard to get right, and Hopcraft absolutely nails it.

Character-wise, this book really shines. Greyson and Lyra feel layered, real, and shaped by their pasts in a way that adds depth without over-explaining everything. Their dynamic—mentor/rookie with a hint of something more—is honestly addictive to read.

The dual POV makes the investigation feel richer and more dynamic

The pacing is tight and never drags—every chapter adds something

It handles dark, heavy themes with sensitivity, not just shock factor

There’s this underlying psychological tension and moral grey area that keeps you thinking even after you finish

And honestly… it’s just so hard to put down

Overall, it’s a gripping, twisty, emotionally layered crime thriller that feels like the start of something big.

Fantastic British Crime Thriller

It has been a while since I’ve sat down and read a crime thriller novel, and I tried to go in without expectation. The storyline and subplots gripped me in Sinister Innocence, and I can’t wait until Gentle Ruin is out, because we definitely have a case to work on!!

Having the story told from the perspectives of DCI Greyson Spencer and DC Lyra Fellows felt engrossing and different from what I’ve read before. You truly felt what they felt, and I loved the detail behind the psychology of all the characters. You could tell a lot of thought went into Lyra and Greyson, particularly in how their partnership will evolve. I’m also big on a character’s past and how it shapes their present, and I feel like Katie managed to subtly showcase what Lyra and Greyson went through that makes them behave the way they do, without actually throwing it in the reader’s face. I think that’s why you don’t really see the twists coming until they’re just about punching you in the face.

I love a book that I don’t want to put down because I know something is about to happen, and Sinister Innocence is exactly that. I finished it in less than two days, and honestly, if I didn’t have a day job, it would have taken me even less time.

There were sprinklings of British humour, which I personally love (tea is the answer). I found myself smiling at the small interactions between the characters, which really broke up the tension of what actually happened in the book. I resonate with Billy and his love of food.

I would like to state that, due to my many, many, many hours of binge-watching Criminal Minds, Inspector Morse, A Touch of Frost, Miss Marple, and Bones (the list is honestly endless), I did (partially) guess whodunnit—but it didn’t feel like everything was leading up to that as the answer. Whilst I kind of figured it out, it still shocked me, as there were parts I did not anticipate.

I’m so excited to share my thoughts on Sinister Innocence – the first book in a brand new series by Kate Hopcraft (and yes… I’m part of the street team 🖤). With book two, Gentle Ruin, releasing on 31st May, this is the perfect time to get started!

Let’s talk characters…

Lyra Fellows – instantly likeable, sharp, and knows her stuff. I really enjoyed being in her head and watching her navigate this case.

DCI Greyson Spencer – efficient, moody, gets results, and definitely doesn’t take prisoners. He’s got that guarded, “I don’t do feelings” energy because of his past… but the chemistry? Oh it’s there 👀 The slow burn potential between him and Lyra is real. The looks, the tension, the thoughts… they’re not fooling anyone.

Billy – honestly, everyone needs a Billy 😂 Old school, carefree, and on his fourth breakfast of the day. One of my favourite characters without a doubt.

There were some brilliant moments in this book! I genuinely laughed out loud at the driving scene (you’ll know when you get there 😅), and lines like:

“If you’re going to make me a piece in your game, don’t be surprised if I decide to play.”

🔥🔥🔥

The tension really ramps up as the story progresses, and by around 75% I was fully invested. There are so many twists and turns, some I had my suspicions about, others completely blindsided me 👀

The story is told mainly through dual POV (Lyra and Greyson) in first person, with the occasional chapters from the culprit woven in… which adds such a chilling layer to the story and gives you just enough insight into their motives.

Overall, this is a fantastic start to what I think is going to be a seriously addictive series. I’m already ready for book two!

Sinister Innocence by Katie Hopcraft is a gripping psychological thriller that plays with the idea that appearances can be dangerously misleading. The story builds tension slowly but effectively, drawing readers in as trust begins to unravel and hidden motives come to light. Hopcraft’s characters feel layered and unpredictable, which keeps you questioning who to believe until the very end. Her writing is clear, immersive, and perfectly suited to the dark tone of the novel. Overall, this is a compelling and unsettling read that will appeal to fans of suspenseful stories with strong psychological depth.

I was very grateful to receive and arc copy of this book.

Sinister Innocence by Kate Hopcraft was delicious! I devoured this book in a day! This book is a psychological thriller that has you on the edge of your seat! As the book unfolds the past catches up with the main characters, lies and secrets unfold. There is also a romantic element with the characters that gave great depth that keeps you emotionally attached and engaged! The character development was compelling to read about. The story is suited for those who love a good twist!!! It has me shook but I loved it and it was done so well!

I cannot wait for the next one to see this play out!

Not usually a indie reader/reviewer but I discovered Kate on tiktok and found her book there and was instantly intrigued.
I absolutely loved it and devoured it in 2 days. There are some dark themes throughout and plenty of feminine rage, an excellent touch to a thriller. We get the perspectives of DCI Spencer and DC Fellows, and the killer plus a range of other characters to keep the interest and storyline going.
There are characters who are made to look suspicious but the final twist is delivered so well. Although I did guess who the killer was, it was fun to read and I loved the slow burn chemistry between Greyson and Lyra.
We need the next book now please!

An ARC read that completely took me by surprise.

This mystery thriller had me hooked from the very beginning—I genuinely couldn’t put it down. I even abandoned my other reads because I needed to know how it ended, and it definitely didn’t disappoint.

The story is written in dual POV from two detectives, which felt like such a fresh and interesting approach. I really enjoyed seeing the case unfold from both perspectives.

The book does explore some heavier topics, so I’d recommend checking trigger warnings beforehand. That being said, it kept me completely engaged from start to finish.

Up until the very end, I was constantly trying to figure out who was behind everything and why, which made it even more addictive. The story flowed smoothly, and the plot twist was done really well.

Overall, a gripping and fast-paced read that I’d definitely recommend.

Sinister Innocence is a dark and captivating read from the start.
Told from perspectives of DCI Greyson Spencer, and DC Lyra Fellows, we follow them on their investigation into a brutal murder, that quickly uncovers some disturbing crimes. When a video turns up in evidence, it is clear that this is just the beginning.

Revenge, justice, morally grey actions, vigilantism, the full works.
Both of the MCs in this book are developed and introduced so well. Despite taking their jobs seriously, they are so very clearly human and it made me find it so easy to connect with them. The slow burn romance building as well.. mhmmm.

The crimes described in this book are truly disturbing and I don't say that lightly as an avid crime/thriller reader. However, they are written with sensitivity and allows the readers to explore some important themes.

I don't ever highlight/note kindle reads, but this one had me highlighting every chapter.

"Just because she carried it well doesn't mean it wasn't heavy"

"Denial can be a form of survival"

I cannot wait for the next DCI Spencer Greyson novel.

I absolutely loved this book from the very first page and could not put it down. It’s so beautifully and skillfully written, and the characters have this fascinating mix of vibes — some slightly off, some instantly likeable — that makes them feel genuinely real. Lyra, especially, is an outstanding character. She’s crafted with such depth and detail that you feel as though you truly know her, as if she could step right off the page.

I was hooked from page one! Sinister Innocence had gripping crime, plot twists that made me gasp, and a slow burn romance that left me wanting more!

The crime element of the story was truly gripping, with more information about what happened being dropped into the plot at a pace that kept me reading to the point I struggled to put it down at night. I found myself questioning everyone's motives—and at times, even questioning the victims themselves. I went from shocked and angry to thoroughly disgusted and horrified. The twists genuinely caught me off guard!

The slow-burn romance chemistry was peppered in at the right time throughout the book, it was the perfect amount to have me hoping something would develop without it distracting me from the investigation. It was grounded and realistic, I miss this style of romance.

As a reader with aphantasia (meaning I can't mentally visualise scenes), I really enjoyed Kate’s writing style. It wasn’t filled with dense, overly descriptive padding. The characters thoughts and logic were relatable and I could completely feel the tension and atmosphere of every single scene.

An incredible, immersive crime thriller that balances dark, high-stakes mystery with a brilliant, slow-burning dynamic. Roll on book two!!!

On a personal level, this book got me through one of the hardest weeks of my life, it gave me the escape I needed and Kate’s characters will live with me for a long time after this.

I was lucky enough to be able to read Kate Hopcraft’s latest novel, Sinister Innocence, before release.

This book is the first in a series which follows DCI Greyson Spencer and Lyra Fellows — the rookie detective he’s taken under his wing.

In this story, they pick up the case of a brutal murder of a prominent businessman, which unravels further when they get hold of a disturbing video of the victim with four other men assaulting a woman — all identities hidden. The detectives are fuelled by their passion for their work, along with past personal trauma, to find not only the killer, but the men in the video too. As another body turns up, they realise they’re under pressure to crack the case before the killer strikes again and they lose their chance to serve justice to these monsters.

This story is fast paced, gripping, dark (check your TW) and full of twists you don’t see coming. There is a romantic undertone which is tastefully done, not taking away from the main plot. It’s clear Kate has put a lot of effort into researching police procedure to make the storyline realistic, and has thrown in some humour to lighten up the tone in parts. The characters are relatable and loveable; I’m looking forward to getting back to them in book two (and three, and four…).

This book was so much fun to read and I’m excited to see where Kate takes the story next.

What can I say about Sinister Innocence?
Katie knows how to write an opening chapter!! So much so I just had to read it aloud online for others to hear.
I haven't read a thriller in so long that I forgot just how good they are - that, or Katie has just done an exceptional job of gripping me from the very first page.
Any chance I could get, I was there engrossed in the world of DCI Spencer and DC Lyra, and if I wasn't reading, I was pestering Katie about who the killer could be (sorry Katie lol).

I not only enjoyed this from a reader's perspective - but also from a craft-level perspective.
As a writer myself - who is a natural editor on not only my own work, but others - I found very little at fault with the pacing, structure, world-building and character development.
Katie really knows how to write a good book! And seeing as this is her first, I just can't wait to see what other's she has in store, as I know she is only going to get better.

She's found a life-long fan, and any books she writes, I will be waiting with bated breath!

Thanks again Katie for such an awesome book!

Sinister Innocence grabbed my interest right from the start. I enjoy police crime thrillers and this one certainly delivered.
The pacing is consistent and kept my interest all the way through and made me want to keep reading.
The strength of this book really lies in its mood, there’s an eerie, unsettling tone throughout that keeps you slightly on edge, even in the quieter moments. The book covers a very sinister topic, but is done well and you really root for justice. You’re just not sure if you want it from the police or the one they’re chasing!
The characters are layered enough to keep you guessing, and I loved how nothing felt entirely black-and-white. Trust is constantly shifting, and just when you think you’ve figured things out, the story nudges you in another direction. There was a good twist that I did work out, but it still added impact the story. The twists weren’t wildly shocking, but they were satisfying and well-earned without feeling added just for shock value.
Overall, a gripping, well paced thriller with a haunting edge, perfect if you enjoy stories where innocence isn’t quite what it seems and you want justice to prevail in whatever way it can!

From the very first page, I was completely hooked—this book is instantly gripping and doesn’t let up. The tension, pacing, and atmosphere kept me fully invested the entire time.

Lyra and Greyson completely stole my heart. Both are carrying the weight of their past traumas, yet they’re fierce, protective, and impossible not to root for. Their slow-burn chemistry was so satisfying and added such a great emotional depth to the story.

I did have an inkling about who the killer might be, but honestly? It didn’t take away from the experience at all. There were still plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing and fully engaged.

I can't forget about Billy, as a side character he still might be my favourite 🥰, completely stole my heart.

Overall, this is a brilliant crime thriller, and I’m already excited to continue the series. Highly recommend if you love suspense, strong characters, and a touch of slow-burn romance 🔥📖

Just wow!

Sinister Innocence is a gripping and brilliantly crafted read that pulls you in from the very first page and refuses to let go. The story masterfully balances suspense and emotion, keeping readers constantly guessing as the plot unfolds with unexpected twists and mounting tension.

The author's writing style is polished, immersive, and wonderfully fast paced, making the book incredibly difficult to put down. I found myself completely devouring it.

With its perfect blend of intrigue, atmosphere, and heart, Sinister Innocence delivers a thoroughly satisfying reading experience while leaving just enough mystery to eagerly anticipated what comes next. I am already counting down the days until book two.
