She hunts monsters.
I am one.
The only question is, which one of us will break first?

Every serial killer has an MO.
Mine is a little more selective.
I kill those who aren't afraid of consequences, whose money and influence put them beyond the law's reach.
Each person is chosen with purpose, each death earned.

However, my rules mean nothing when someone starts copying my work, twisting it into something grotesque. Bodies begin to pile up, each one more brutalized than the last.
Even worse, the gruesome spectacle attracts the eye of Detective Sawyer. She has a gift of seeing through lies, reading deception the way predators sense weakness. She's cold. Intelligent. Impossible to fool.

Working beside her is a dangerous game.
She's falling for the man I'm pretending to be.
I'm becoming obsessed with the woman who could one day destroy me.

The copycat is escalating one step at a time.
Detective Sawyer's getting closer and closer to the truth.
And I’m caught between two identities—the killer hiding beneath the surface, and the man who's terrified he might actually be falling for her, too.

Very kindly I was sent an ARC copy by the author, I enjoyed this book my only small qualm was that I felt it jumped too quickly from the enemy stages to the lovers and I felt a slight disconnect, could probably have done with a couple filler chapters to make it feel more believable to me. But none the less it’s a well thought out storyline and I’m intrigued to see what book 2 brings!

This book is FANTASTIC!! I started and finished it today and have already recommended it to 2 close friends and my husband! It gives “Dexter” vibes without the gore. I love the relationship that blossoms between the MMC and the FMC during the first part of the book. I love the puzzle aspect of it and how things ultimately click into place. I absolutely CANNOT wait for the next book!!

I received this book as an ARC and am leaving this honest review in return.

So that’s was an absolute whirlwind of an adventure that we just went through and I need book 2 right now because what just happened!

I think this book was pretty interesting and the plot was so well down. I honestly couldn’t tell which direction the dark romance was going to take. I was thinking it was going to be your more sillier type of serial killer romances similar to the Ruinous Trilogy or Lights out type of humor but it has a way darker turn of events.

There’s a strong moral code in our FMC and the amount of manipulation that I just experience from the MMC had my jaw dropping. Like what in the world. But alas I do want to know what happens next because I’m left confused to be honest. Also I do think that Shay and Tom’s relationship did progress pretty fast for two people who seemed like they didn’t want to be in one in the first place. I mean at first I didn’t even know that they truly had any attraction or crush on each other LOL.

But I did enjoy their little moments together and I am curious to see how this will work out.

Wow! I went into this read blind, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it wasn’t that! First, I’d like to say thank you for the advanced copy. This was my first ARC, which I was excited to receive, and boy it was a great book to start off with. Now, to give a review without spoilers. When I first started the book, I thought it was giving vibes like the Ruinous Love series by Brynne Weave, then it started to feel more like a love story. But then the tables turn again and you kind of get a vibe like “You” by Caroline Kepnes. This story had me at the edge of my seat, staying up through the night, just to see what would happen. I knew this was the first book in a series, so it wouldn’t wrap up here, but man does it leave you wanting more! I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Thank you, Isobel Bishop, for a great story! Please don’t make us wait too long for the next book. LOL. I’m ready for more!

Cause of Death pulls you in fast and doesn’t really let go. The tension kicks in early and keeps building, making it hard to put down. It reads almost like a crime show you’d binge in one weekend — steady pacing, sharp twists, and just enough surprises to keep you guessing. While there’s a hint of romance in the mix, the real focus is on the investigation and the psychological edge that keeps everything feeling intense.

Detective Shay and Medical Examiner Tom make a great team, and their dynamic adds an extra layer to the story without taking over the mystery. The twists feel fresh, not predictable, and the character growth makes their choices feel believable. Just a heads up: it ends on a cliffhanger. If you don’t mind waiting for answers, you’ll probably be excited for what comes next. If you love twisty crime thrillers with strong leads, this one’s definitely worth checking out.

Okay, so mindfuck series but make it somehow more twisted it feels wrong that I absolutely fell in love with Tom i kinda agree with hot morals an im not sorry about it. Shay annoyed me up on her high horse seriously why did she not agree with him. ffs girl! im honestly mad about the cliffhanger I need more now and to knit hour things end you can leave a book life that if him & shay don't end up together and you put me through that ending for nothing I may have to send Tom after you.

Title: Cause of Death
Author: Isobel Bishop
Rating 4 star

This book was about a serial killer who kills bad people and a detective that is hunting him. This book was a good cat and mouse chase and gave real dexter vibes.
To me the book was well written and kept my attention, it did slow down a little bit but there were also a few twists that I did not see coming. One of my biggest issues with this book is that it states it is a slow burn and started off more of an enemies to lovers…this did NOT feel like a very slow burn, and I could have used more of slow tension that brought the main characters closer, instead it was just kind of BAM they are together.
This book was fast paced and also an entertaining read. I would recommend this to anyone that is wanting something that is fast, easy, and enjoyable.

ARC Review ✨

Ok to start off, I really really loved this book. I flew through it. I really enjoyed the writing, it was the perfect amount of detail, not so much to the point where you just want the story to move on, but enough so it's easy to picture. I really loved all the complex emotions this book gave me. The characters were deep, and the spice was great.
I'm going to order this on Amazon right now actually so I have a physical copy because this was truly a great read ☺️ I'm super excited to finish off the series and see where it goes!!

Slight SPOILERS

The only thing I'd wish for would have been a little more information on Shay putting together the pieces of the murders before she connected them to Tom, like her mind while she's working on it without him nearby. I also wish we got a little more push from Shay when it came to her building a relationship with Tom, because there was that enemies to lovers trope. But this is just me nit picking. I'm hoping we can get a little more information on Tom's past, his relationship with Shay, and Julia in the next one! OH and another thing I LOVED, was how calculated Tom was. He wasn't like those stereotypical smart guys in TV shows where they magically know the answer to everything, or voice everything. He's very quiet and calculated and doesn't make immediate and rash decisions until he is absolutely desperate, which was one of my favorite things about him honestly. I loved that he thought things through, and I loved the way he cared for Shay. Tom's definitely crazy, but honestly I felt really bad for him, and the way the author wrote this, I actually wanted Tom to win and be with Shay (I'm a lover girl at heart🥲)

⚠️ Check trigger warnings before diving in.

I went into Cause of Death without many expectations, and it quickly turned into one of those “just one more chapter” reads that kept me hooked far later than planned.

If you loved the psychological pull of Dexter or the twisty energy of the Mindfck* vibes, you’ll likely devour this one.

The novel is structured in a way that feels incredibly cinematic. It genuinely reads like a suspenseful crime series, complete with mounting tension, sharp twists, and that ever-present sense of something simmering beneath the surface. Every time I thought I had solved the puzzle, the story shifted direction and reminded me I absolutely had not.

While there is romance threaded throughout the narrative, I would categorize this more as a thriller with romantic elements. Readers who enjoy psychologically driven stories, particularly those with morally complex situations, will likely find a lot to appreciate here.

Detective Shay and Medical Examiner Tom are compelling leads, both professionally and personally. Their evolving dynamic was one of my favourite aspects of the book. The author does an excellent job of presenting both perspectives in a way that feels believable, even when their viewpoints conflict. I found myself understanding each side, though admittedly leaning more toward one than the other.

The twists deserve special mention because several genuinely caught me off guard. Nothing felt predictable, and that unpredictability kept the pacing strong from beginning to end.

The chemistry between the characters is also well handled. The intimate scenes are impactful without overwhelming the plot, allowing the suspense to remain the primary driving force of the story.

And then there’s the ending.

Without giving anything away, it is a true cliffhanger. The kind that leaves you both impressed and slightly frustrated because you immediately want answers. I’m incredibly curious to see where the next instalment takes these characters and how the larger story will unfold.

Overall, Cause of Death is a suspenseful, intriguing read that blends thriller elements with emotional complexity. If you enjoy dark, twist-filled narratives with compelling character dynamics, this is absolutely worth adding to your list.

Thank you to the author for the ARC. I will definitely be continuing with this series.

Cause of Death is a dark, compelling read that hooked me quickly and kept me turning pages. Isobel Bishop does a great job building a tense, unsettling atmosphere, and the story leans into some of my favorite tropes—morally gray characters, dangerous minds, and the uneasy pull between people who probably shouldn’t trust each other.

I really enjoyed both the main female and male characters and found their dynamic intriguing, especially given the subject matter and stakes. That said, I did find myself wishing we got more of their relationship development on the page. The chemistry and potential are absolutely there, and I wanted to see more moments where that connection had time to breathe and evolve in real time rather than feeling implied or rushed past. I wouldn't call it enemies to lovers, more like coworkers to lovers to enemies.

The book does end on a cliffhanger, which left me equal parts frustrated and excited—in the best way. I’m really hoping the next installment dives deeper into his psyche and explores more of the other serial killer as well, because those elements feel ripe for further development and psychological depth.

Overall, Cause of Death is a strong start with an intriguing premise, dark themes, and characters that left me wanting more—which, honestly, is exactly why I’ll be continuing the series. If you enjoy dark romance, suspense, and morally complex characters, this one is definitely worth checking out.

Thanks for the ARC!
I went into Cause of Death expecting a gritty, "Dexter-style" dark romance, and while it definitely delivered on the atmosphere, the execution left me with more questions than answers. The book opens with a very cinematic, moody vibe, almost like a Max Payne noir film, and I was immediately intrigued by the premise of a forensic pathologist who is secretly a serial killer. However, as the story progressed, the "noir" aesthetic often slipped into "purple prose." There were pages of heavy, over-descriptive scenery that felt like filler rather than plot-driven tension.
Another big struggle was the logic of the procedural elements.
The relationship between Shay and Tom also gave me major whiplash. They went from being enemies for years to falling into bed and love within just a few chapters.
Then, in the third act, the pacing completely stalled. The "big reveal" that Shay uses to figure out Tom’s secret felt incredibly coincidental and it led to a long, dragging sequence in a basement that lost the rhythm of the first half of the book.
Ultimately, I found myself rooting for the "bad guy," which is usually the goal in dark romance, but the way the story concluded left me frustrated and confused. Between the FMC’s sudden "discovery" and a prologue that felt like it belonged in a different book, meant as a cliffhanger, I’m not sure I was supposed to be on her side or his.

I received this an ARC and review is voluntary. Cause of Death by Isobel Bishop is a gripping, suspense-driven thriller that pulls you in from the very first chapter and refuses to let go.
The story maintains a steady, cinematic tension throughout, blending psychological suspense, crime investigation, and emotional depth. While there are romantic undertones, the novel leans firmly into layered mystery and character-driven intrigue.
Detective Shay and Medical Examiner Tom are compelling protagonists whose professional partnership adds authenticity and emotional weight without overshadowing the central mystery. Their evolving dynamic deepens the stakes and enhances the overall narrative.
The pacing is addictive, with well-timed revelations and genuinely surprising twists that keep the plot from feeling predictable. Beyond the suspense, the novel explores themes of grief, loyalty, secrets, and moral complexity, giving the mystery meaningful emotional depth.
The book concludes with a significant cliffhanger, making it especially satisfying for readers who enjoy ongoing storylines and eagerly anticipate the next instalment.
Overall, Cause of Death delivers an engaging mix of tension, strong character development, and twist-driven storytelling. Fans of atmospheric, character-focused thrillers will find this an excellent and compelling read.

I really wanted to love this. The prose had me hooked- detective falls in love with a serial killer. It’s very Dexter Morgan/ Joe Goldberg and Mindfck series coded. Everything I would have wanted out of a serial killer romance. The story was interesting and I loved the twist and suspense at the end, but BOYYYY both Tom and Shay were getting on my nerves 😩.

!!!***spoilers & rants****!!!
Don’t read past this point if you haven’t read the book!!!!

The amount of times Shay could have just stabbed the man and ran, but obviously we wouldn’t have a book 2. For example, when she had her hands finally untied and given the needle—- she had the perfect opportunity to stab this man in the throat and be done with it 😩😩😩.

Also Tom, poor Tom, I don’t think this man realizes he is a sociopath and tries to convince himself this whole time he’s in love. I feel like Shay became more of an obsession. I felt no chemistry between the two really. They just went from co-workers to lovers in an instant with little bonding time. The part that chilled me was when Tom said, “I had hurt her…but it was too late now to feel any regrets. If I were brutally honest with myself, somewhere deep down, I didn’t feel any.”
WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN TOM 😭.

It was a great story. I don’t know what I thought it was going to be, but I was very happy! I loved the story arc and the insight into Tom’s past.
Although he’s the ‘bad guy’ I couldn’t help but love him. I completely get why he does what he does and was gutted for him with the outcome. However, I did appreciate the fact that Shay stuck to her moral compass and wasn’t just another law enforcement officer willing to blur the lines for love (I’m looking at you Mindf*ck 😂 no matter how much I love you! 👀)
I do think there was quite a quick jump from being coworkers to being in love considering how uptight and reserved Shay is with connection and intimacy. I feel there should have been a bit more added to break down a few more of the walls before they became intimate however I do understand how a good one night stand can completely make you spiral, unravel and make you act in a way that you wouldn’t normally - I married mine! 😂🤭

All in all, a read I really enjoyed and 4 stars just because I would’ve liked a bit more back and forth with Tom & Shay to start. I absolutely cannot wait to see what comes from book 2!

I received this ebook as an ARC from the author and this review is my own, honest opinion.
Thank you Isobel 🫶🏾

okay so… I genuinely don’t know what to say because my brain is lowkey completely cooked. I was WAY too on edge. why did I have a pulse?? why was I stressed?? I’m honestly still stressed???

and the prologue. at the end. BRO. SIR. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK WAS THAT???
it was so wildly not what I thought it was going to be, but somehow also… so much better??

I am ridiculously excited to keep reading because I have no fucking clue where this is going or how it’s supposed to end. I see ZERO light at the end of the tunnel 😔✋🏼like I’m fully staring at a doomed-as-hell love story and I have SO many questions. so. many. questions.

also questioning myself and my moral compass because why was I annoyed at Shay?? like objectively the ONLY reasonable one here and I was still like “ehhh give him another chance, he’s only murdered a few bad guys.” my moral compass is absolutely not pointing north 🤪🤪🤝🏼🤝🏼👍🏼🤷🏼‍♀️🥸

anyway. I’m unwell. obsessed. stressed. and fully strapped in for whatever emotional damage comes next.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (ARC Review)
This book had me in an absolute chokehold.
A perfectly unhinged mix of dark romance, mystery, and thriller, with a morally gray MMC who gives off major something-is-not-right vibes and a FMC who immediately clocks it. Their dynamic starts off tense, uncomfortable, and borderline hostile—and honestly, that just made it better.
What really sold this for me was the plot. Yes, the spice is there (and it hits), but it never overshadows the story. The investigation, the mind games, and the slow, dangerous shift in their relationship kept me glued to the page. Think You meets Criminal Minds—dark, psychological, and addictive in the best way.
I devoured this in under three hours and could not put it down. And that ending? Absolutely rude. I love a good cliffhanger, but this one left me staring at the wall, immediately needing the next book.
If you like morally questionable characters, tension you can feel in your chest, and a story that actually balances spice with substance—add this to your TBR. I’ll be waiting (im)patiently for book two. 🖤📖

I was incredibly lucky to be chosen as an ARC reader for this book , huge thank you to the author for letting me read it early!

This one completely pulled me in. Thomas and Shay’s relationship starts with tension, sharp edges, and plenty of dislike, and watching that slowly unravel into something deeper was so satisfying. The slow burn was done brilliantly – the chemistry, the build-up, the emotional conflict… it all felt natural and intense in the best way.

I especially loved the dual POV chapters. Being inside both Thomas and Shay’s heads added so much depth to their dynamic and made the twists and emotional moments hit even harder.

If I had one small critique, it would be that after the big reveal, the ending felt a little rushed. I just wanted more time in that aftermath because the twist deserved to fully breathe.

Overall though, I genuinely loved it. I’m already desperate for book two and would absolutely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a slow burn, detective x serial killer dynamic packed with tension, angst and twists.

I received an ARC of Cause of Death by Isobel Bishop and I ended up reading it in a single day. It’s a quick, engaging read that pulls you in right away. From the start, I truly had no idea where the story was going, which made it even more enjoyable.

Tom, the introverted medical examiner, and Shay, the overworked detective, were both compelling characters. I found myself genuinely liking them individually and rooting for them together. Their dynamic felt natural, and the romance had just the right amount of steam without overpowering the plot.

The twists and turns kept me guessing, and I appreciated how unpredictable the story was. It’s a strong debut, and I’m excited to see what the author writes next. My only critique is that I would have liked to dive a bit deeper into Tom’s trauma and backstory to better understand his motivations and I hope book 2 delves into this more.

Overall, Cause of Death is a fast-paced, twisty read with great character development and a romance worth following. I really look forward to what the next book brings.

I don’t want to give away the story …. But I absolutely devoured Cause of Death by Isobel Bishop. From the very first chapter, I was hooked by the dark, gripping atmosphere and the flawless dual POV storytelling. The psychological tension is masterfully done — every chapter pulled me deeper into the morally gray world Bishop created.
What truly stood out to me was the character development. The complexity of the vigilante killer paired with the sharp, determined detective created such an intense cat-and-mouse dynamic. The chemistry, the emotional layers, and the constant twists kept me on edge the entire time. It’s the perfect blend of thriller and slow-burn tension.
The pacing was addictive, the writing was immersive, and the ending left me reeling in the best way possible. I’m already counting down until I can get my hands on the next book.
I cannot wait to read more from Isobel Bishop — if this is just the beginning, I know the rest of her work is going to be incredible.

I went into Cause of Death not knowing what to expect, and wow… this one pulled me in fast. Isobel Bishop delivers a tense, emotional read that balances mystery with deeply layered characters.

From the start, there’s this underlying sense of unease that never really lets up. The pacing is steady, with just enough twists to keep you questioning everyone’s motives. I loved how the author didn’t rely on cheap shock value—instead, the suspense builds naturally, and when the reveals come, they actually feel earned.

The emotional depth surprised me the most. It’s not just about solving what happened—it’s about grief, secrets, and how far people will go to protect themselves (or someone they love). The characters felt flawed and real, which made the stakes hit even harder.

If you enjoy mysteries that are more character-driven with a darker, emotional edge, this one is worth picking up. I’ll definitely be reading more from Isobel Bishop after this.

Y’all. Just read this book. It’s that good. I was hooked from page one and did not come up for air.
The story follows Thomas Hayes, a medical examiner, and Detective Shay Sawyer, who’s working a brutal string of murders. From the beginning, Shay has this uneasy feeling about Tom — an instinct she can’t quite explain or shake. Something about him just doesn’t sit right… but she can’t prove why.
One drink turns into more, and before she knows it, lines start to blur and a relationship begins.
This book has serious cat-and-mouse energy. You’re constantly questioning everything. Will Shay uncover the killer? And what role does Tom really play in all of it?
It’s packed with twists, tension, psychological mind games, and yes — there’s definitely some spice. Just when you think you have it figured out, it flips on you. And that ending? Total cliffhanger. Be ready.
I need the next book immediately. 👀🔥

Wow, this book was not what I expected. I mean a serial killer and a detective lover who would’ve thought it would work but it did!

This would’ve been a five stars for me but it jumped too quickly from enemies to lovers back to enemies, I would have liked a bit more in between but still a strong four stars.

It is a very fast-paced book with great main characters. It has a great psychological Paul that draws you in and makes you want to read more! It makes you question yourself time and time again!A few times throughout the story I found myself caught off guard.

I really like the chemistry between Shay and Tom and thought it was written beautifully I really hope it’s not the end for them!

This book on a cliffhanger and I cannot wait for the next book! Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this as an advanced reader copy.

I have to admit, I did not see the book taking the path it ended up taking. I am so used to characters (especially FMCs) leaving their morals at the door and going with whatever happens for the sake of love, passion and dark romance. I did feel the relationship between them progressed rather quickly considering she had a feeling something was off about him and neither of them seemed to be interested in a relationship. I thought the plot was great and the characters development was good. I was confused by some of Shay’s choices as they just seemed out of character for her, especially considering her profession. I was 100% behind her final decision at the end of the book and am so curious to see what the next book brings. Judging by the final chapter, I have to believe there is more to the story.

If you like thrillers that slowly pull you deeper into a mystery, this one is worth picking up!!
What begins as a seemingly straightforward case quickly becomes more complicated as the investigation digs deeper and hidden motives start surfacing.
The writing pace leans toward a slower, investigative style rather than constant action, so it’s easier to analyze clues and watch the mystery unfold step by step.
The characters are written in a way that makes it difficult to fully trust anyone. As the story progresses, you begin to see different sides of them, and it becomes clear that nearly everyone has something they’d rather keep buried. Which definitely adds to the mystery!!
You will keep guessing until the very end!!

Thank you to the author for the eARC copy of the book! 😊🖤

Cause of Death follows FMC Detective Shay Sawyer & MMC Dr. Tom Hayes M.E. While Dr. Hayes is the medical examiner he harbors a dark secret, he’s also a serial killer but, he’s selective in he only takes out the worst of the worst, criminals. Ones that the government can’t touch and ones with crimes against children. Will she figure out one of her coworkers is one of the people she’s trying to catch?

The plot of this story is very good. It feels fresh with them being coworkers. The world and story are very immersive. The relationship between the MCs is engaging and it keeps you wanting more. I can’t wait for more books in this series! 😊🖤

Honestly, this book took me by surprise! I did not expect it to be so good from beginning to end. Every chapter there was something keeping me reading more and more. The book isn’t short or long I think it’s the perfect amount for a day read. The female character being the detective is great! I always love seeing women strive in male dominating fields. The main male character is an examiner but also a serial killer. The story had me conflicted! I was on both their sides. Putting myself in her shoes I went through all the emotions. But I also understand why he does what he does. I feel like this was very well written and easy to read. The story flowed through my mind like a thriller romance. Only problem I have is now I have to wait for book 2!

This story gave me so many moments of questioning who is right and wrong. Everything seems so fine in the beginning. Tom truly thinks nothing he does is wrong. He is morally grey for sure. You fall in love with his quirks in the first half of the book and leaves you confused the last half. I love Tom but he is allll bad. Bad choices when it comes to Shay.

Shay is very black and white. Right and wrong. After she starts to fall for Tom, she is trying to stick to her morals but dear Tom is so confusing.

Shay is so mfking strong. She is that bish. There were some slower parts of this book but I'm definitely drawn in. This being the first book Isobel Bishop has released shows me that the story will just get better and better.
