I would have rated this book at least 4 stars for being an engaging story, but for the fact that the WHOLE book was riddled with spelling mistakes, poor punctuation, missing and transposed letters and words and more, all of which seriously detracted from my enjoyment of this book. In fact, towards the end of this marathon read, I found myself looking for the errors instead of enjoying the story.
I don't know whether it's a result of a poor spellchecker, bad proofreading, an AI that doesn't understand colloquial English, or a combination of all three, but the overall reading experience left a lot to be desired.
I have been a big fan of John Walker and enjoyed reading the booked he writes but Conscript is not the best series he has written IMO. I found it hard to work out who was who and thought there was too much going on in the story that I found it hard to follow at times. Though they are up to fighting some really had aliens there is one person at home who is pulling the strings. The idea of swapping someones ID did not work for me as face it you cannot change your DNA. It would have been nice to know how the integrated with the Friendly aliens as well.. Hope the next set is better
Hi, I enjoyed the series, I bought it as a complete series, but it could have been so much better if it had been edited. There were many instances where the wrong word was used, ie. them instead of him, and words put in twice or the wrong place. Frustrating but not enough to spoil the plot. I would have scored higher if not for this.
Good grief - typos every third or fourth page. Who's editing this?
Good storyline and good characters. Writing is good but this definitely needs editing for spellings, incorrect words, past and present tense, etc. The further into the series the worse the typographical errors. Very distracting while you read.
This story never stops giving. Sometimes its a little too wordy but overall it's an outstanding read for folks like me who like their aliens mean and thier humans and allies just a little meaner,
The quantity of wrong word errors makes portions of the otherwise interesting story line hard to wade through. Not an exciting book, but still worth the read.
The story started out with a lot different characters m. But little by little they began to come together. Lots of scrapes and fighting and battles but in the end everything came together. Good ending!
Weaving a skein of threads and bodies into a compelling story is never easy, but John has done it. Well done, sir. Thanks for sharing the story with us.
Wanted to get back to reading it. Looked forward to reading more a good space opera. Some confusion with character jumps but enjoyable may read more from author.
