The series keeps me hooked, but there is some somes of strain in this fifth volume. Kai, the MC, a "magus" secretly returned from the future, continues his march toward changing history in order to subvert the apocalyptic end to life he experienced. The characters are wonderfully drawn and it is great to see how central vital friendships are to the book, but everything has been pretty much asexual so far, though Kai is not being pressured to marry now that he wants to become the king. I understand he is busy, but he is also human, and there are plenty of candidates who obviously love him and are attracted to him. So the absence of any interest in this area seems a little strange. (Then again, for many years while I was growing up, scyfy and fantasy were famous for no sexual expression, being the world of geeky teens.) Also, there were no real big surprises here, with the plot being mostly the unfolding of what has been set up previously. Still, a fun, diverting series.

I was neither fan of the civil war plot itself, it's timing, progress or speed in the first half of the book. I struggled with the second half of the book as i was no fan about the plot development.. In the end i lost interest and decided to move on

Boring

I have enjoyed the series up to this point. It has been written well and the characters enjoyable. This one however was a slog. I didn't finish (40%). The fight for the throne arc was boring and predictable. The amount of convoluted plot devices and plot armour made most soap operas look tame by comparison.
