Christy Barritt is an author, freelance writer and speaker who lives in Virginia. She’s married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she’s hilarious—but only when she’s not trying to be. Christy’s a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who’s known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado. She’s only won one contest in her life—and her prize was kissing a pig (okay, okay… actually she did win the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery also). Her current claim to fame is showing off her mother, who looks just like former First Lady Barbara Bush When she’s not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.
Escaping Peril, by Christy Barritt quickly turned into a "can't put it down" kind of story. Naomi King moved home from New York City, determined to put a past that she couldn't fully remember behind her. Sheriff Micah Sutherland just had a knack for being in the right place, at the right time. Or, it seemed to be whenever Naomi might need a rescue. Throughout this book, danger literally haunted Naomi from all sides -- whether she wanted it there or not. Instead of being the one in need, or the rescued, she decided she wanted to be helpful in her own ways. Defying the odds, Sheriff Micah and Naomi attempted to make the area around her home, and her hometown safer. One day at a time, one hour at a time, taught them that their faith in God was growing - despite the dangers even an itsy bitsy baby could bring. Escaping Peril was more than about escaping the past -- it was was about securing the present for the innocent in the present as well as in future. I loved the sweet complexities of this story, as well as the ever present dangers. I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars for the innocence, dangers, and total completeness of this story. Can't wait for the continuing book!!
Escaping Peril is the second installment in this series. Naomi and Micah's story has a mystery, danger, suspense, a dog, and a baby. Naomi, who was attacked in New York, cannot remember her attack or why she was attacked. I enjoyed the chemistry between Naomi and Micah, who has his own personal struggles. Great read.
The problem was, Naomi King couldn't remember anything about the viscious attack that could have killed her if bystanders had not intervened. Leaving her New York City lifestyle behind, she moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains and settled down to help her family manage Refuge Cove, a safe place for women who needed to remove themselves from danger.
Now it seemed that a different kind of peril was confronting Naomi, not only did their immediate neighbors begrudge the fact that the King family had acquired their family property, but they were telegraphing their hostility in dangerous ways. In addition, one of their recent guests had betrayed their trust and now needed help; could Naomi add taking care of a newborn to her growing list of responsiblities? And what about those forgotten memories?
Enter Sheriff Micah Sutherland. Calm, consistent, protective Micah whose steady presence kept grounding Naomi when she needed him the most. Beyond that, Naomi kept battling her own insecurities and Micah was clearly keeping their frequent inter-actions in the category of totally professional.
A wonderful, multi-layered romantic suspense with a potent blend of characters and perplexing plot threads!
Micah and Naomi were thrown into the fire, danger was coming from all angles and their past was closing in. Micah lives up to the biblical meaning of his name-"Who is like God", living a life centered on God, justice, and compassion. Micah is protective of everyone around him, he carries the responsibility of protection and justice. Naomi also lives up to the biblical significance of her name, embodying grace and kindness, how she faces life challenges including loss and hardships. She uses these characteristics in her mission with the refuge, transforming women's personal trials through hope and restoration. Together they a force to be reckoned with. This series deals with hard topics in a way to give encouragement and hope to hopeless situations and the good guys win. Thank you Ms. Barritt for using your creative mind to share stories that keep your mind engaged while allowing the reader to feel as part of the story.
I’m really enjoying the Refuge Cove series and already look forward to returning to this setting.
In this installment, the story centers on Naomi King. After her sister Sarah was murdered by an abusive husband, Naomi came to Refuge Cove to help support the shelter and honor her sister’s memory. With her financial skills, she helps manage the refuge while also trying to move forward after a brutal attack in New York City erased her memory of the previous twenty-four hours.
But as fragments of those lost memories begin to return, it becomes clear that the past she left behind may still be catching up with her.
The story also introduces growing tension in the community, including a neighbor who believes Naomi’s family stole land from his family. These threats soon bring Sheriff Micah Sutherland into Naomi’s life in ways neither of them expected.
This book shifts some of the focus away from the domestic abuse storyline introduced earlier in the series and instead explores Naomi’s past and the danger surrounding it. The combination of romance, suspense, and multiple threats makes for an engaging read.
I’m looking forward to seeing where the next book in the series takes the story.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the author but was under no obligation to provide a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Naomi King left her successful career in finance in New York to join her family in operating a rescue shelter following an attack that almost stole her life. The blows to her head did leave gaps in her memory, but she has moved on and is fulfilled in her new life. However, deadly issues from the past pop up to haunt her. Her brother and the local sheriff try to protect her, just as she tries to protect a newborn whose mother can’t keep her. The tension builds quickly, and the intriguing plot keeps readers glued to the rapidly flipping pages. The endearing characters make you care deeply about what happens in their lives. This exciting thriller can stand alone, but reading book one in the series sets the stage for this novel. I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.
This is the second book in the Refuge Cove series but it is a stand alone read. After reading this one, you will want to read the entire series! Naomi King moved back home after surviving an attack in NY. Even though she can't remember that night, she knows coming home was the right thing to do. After she makes a very difficult decision, things begin to happen. Sheriff Micah Sutherland is determined that Naomi and Refuge Cove will stay safe. Can they discover if everything is happening because of her decision or does it relate to her attack in NY? There are so many directions to go but they must choose the right one. Their lives may depend on it. If you like mystery, suspense, action and a touch of romance - and did I mention K-9s as well?! This book is for you!!!
Christy Barrett again delivers another book in the Refuge Cove series that holds suspense, love, and, most importantly, the power of faith in God and His gift of Grace.
Personally I do not enjoy a series in which each book ends with a cliffhanger. escaping Peril is a continuation of book 1 and reveals more depth in the main characters and how their compassion and strength through faith deepens no matter how much turmoil there is in their lives. Well worth reading any of Ms. Barrett’s novels.
If you’ve read Refuge Cove 1 this is Naomi’s story - how she came to Refuge Cove - the peril that upended her world and brought her back to Refuge Cove. Naomi has lost a key part of her memory - major trauma occurred to her in NYC - she wonders who she can trust or even if she should trust anyone again. Micah, the town sheriff has had his own share of trauma - can he effectively protect Naomi? Perhaps together they can solve some mysteries and learn to trust and love along the way.
Naomi King was attacked while living in New York City afterward moved to refuge Cove with her family to help run a women’s shelter. Sheriff Micah Southerland keeps others safe and takes Naomi and the child she is fostering under his wing to protect, but they start developing feelings for each other complicating his reactions the threats against Naomi. This is a touching book with intrigue and great characters. I highly recommend reading it and the first book in this series.
You won't want to put this down - realistic setting and characters stand out as the biggest thing I enjoy about Christy Barritt's books. You find yourself falling in love with the main characters and I love that you get to see references to characters that made debuts in prior books in the series. Without giving too much of the book away: there is mystery, there is romance. Nothing over the top gory, or too romance centered - just the right amount to keep you engaged in the read.
I really appreciate the way Ms. Barritt delivers realistic characters and edge-of-your-seat suspense without all the gore and foul language of so many authors. Naomi and Micah seem so real and they struggle with believable walls in their respective lives. Add in the twists and turns of the villain (villains?) and you’ve got a great story!
I am engrossed in what is going to happen next and can't wait to see Refuge Cove finally be free of the evil around them and to see our couple married Missy and caleb.a.d Noami and Mikah. They have come through so much, so keep the happy endings coming and gives me and epilog
The story continues in Refuge Cove with all the staff trying to keep the sanctuary running to help women in trouble. This was Naomi's story. She returned from New York hoping her memory would return. It follows with her connection with Sheriff's department. Another excellent novel in Barritt's series.
I couldn't put this book down. I've read almost all of Christy Barritt books and they just keep getting better. This book has so many twist and turns. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good clean story about a dog a baby and some crime. I truly would recommend this book and any other books by Christy Barritt.
Christy Barritt had been a favorite fiction author for quite awhile. There are very few books I haven't read.
I love that you can't figure out what's going to happen next. The characters of Naomi and Micah were fun getting to know. I also love the theme of grace...something we can never deserve.
I love the way Christy grabs your interest from the very beginning, and holds it till the end! Escaping Peril doesn't disappoint! Naomi has a wonderful desire for helping others, even to her own detriment. I loved seeing Micah gravitate to that!
The Refuge Cove series is amazing! It’s filled with everything a suspense should, it kept me intrigued so much that I couldn’t put it down. It’s filled with kept me wanting to try and solve the mystery.
Escaping Peril is a fun return to Refuge Cove. It’s fast-paced with overlapping stories, suspenseful, and has a sweet budding romance. There’s no cliff-hangar, but there is unfinished business that has be waiting anxiously for the next book in the series.
Escaping Peril this is a such a great read that I couldn’t put it down. The story seems to move quickly from someone having a hard life to mystery to a little romance.
Buckle up for this wild ride. Page turning suspense that will keep you up until the book is finished. Definitely worth the read. Romance, mystery, suspense and more. Another great book, #2 in the series, by Christy Barritt.
Christy Barrier is one of our favorites. First and foremost, she keeps the book clean without language or sex. We appreciate this. She always has a theme and carries through with excellent writing.
What a great story of grace and seeing a tough sheriff with a soft heart for a newborn. Swoon. Barritt did a great balancing the suspense and twisting multiple plots together.
What a wonderful work of Christian fiction. This series is incredible exciting and could hardly put it down. Nothing like reading a crime story from one of my favorite Christian authors.
I have read many books by Christy. She never disappoints! Stories are fresh, characters are interesting and believable. I can't wait to read book 3 in this series!
What I liked most about this book besides the action-packed story, was how the author wove God's abilities to direct people's lives, by providing examples of strong Christian characters.
I purchased a copy of the romantic suspense Escaping Peril by Christy Barely and this review was given freely. While the couple find a semblance of peace, and love, there is way too much violence and darkness for me.
Naomi’s life is marred by trauma on every side. However, in the midst of this trauma she finds grace and beauty rising from the ashes. An incredible story from an incredible author!
