While a bit convoluted at the start, the twist in this volume was executed so well. I'm quite invested and I'm hoping Volume 4 comes anytime between today and tomorrow.

no words can define the way volume 3 had me on a chokehold. i have no expectations given how much i love the first two volumes but after finishing vol3, i get why Rexy picked this (and vol4) as his favorites. Maharlika Volume 3 did not just raise the bar, it also rewrote the entire series! so fvcking good!!!

Maharlika's world is starting to feel a little too real, the stakes higher and more personal. Now before I spiral into the heavier thoughts, let me just say how amazing of a duo the creators are. Rexy's restrained, almost taunting storytelling paired with John Ray's explosive (pun intended) art is a recipe for chaos & mischief. The panels? wow. Even in greyscale, John Ray's art is loud, mischievous, and so detailed that I found myself flipping back just to take it all in again.

During my first read, I was too wrapped up in the action and plot twists, I muttered praises and accusations at the creators like they could hear me. But rereading volumes 1 to 3 the other day shifted something. It made me realize that if you take away all the cyberpunk tech, the spectacle, and the alternate history, you are left with something uncomfortably familiar. A sad truth: that even in a story where we have the upper hand, we are still on the brink of ruin. We are still doomed as a nation. It seems like no matter the version, our future was always going to be corrupted because the fatal flaw of (most) people will always be believing and supporting dangerous men.

Volume 3 is my favorite precisely because it leans into that discomfort. It managed to reveal some secrets, pull off yet another twist, all while opening a Pandora's box worth of questions. We are in the thick of it, I believe. And there's more chaos to come. To say that I cannot wait is an understatement.

maharlika is the story that keeps on giving. jaw-dropping plot twists, intricate art detail, gripping storylines, you name it and they’ll serve it on a golden platter.
from the moment they mentioned a third prisoner in track 11, something clicked in my brain. fast forward to track 14, i felt proud of myself for guessing correctly. imagine my shock and disbelief, as i slowly turned to the very last page of track 15. silly me thinking i got it figured out??? nothing could have prepared me for that revelation!!!
its an experience where every reread unveils something new. my copies are decked out with post-its and annotations. since i’m using different colored pens each reread its been a more pleasurable experience to see what new things i catch on each time i revisit the volumes.
fair warning, there’s no final answer when asked for a favorite volume. each one has their own brilliance and significance as the story progresses — every new release gets better and better! volume 3 hit the ball out of the park but for sure, volumes 4, 5, and 6 are just going to keep outperforming the other. looking forward to getting my hands on the next ones! <3

With the amount of excitement for its release, I was worried that Maharlika's volume 3 might disappoint me but lo and behold, I was incredibly happy and satisfied with the third installment! So far this is my favorite out of the three volumes. The story just got even more interesting and we got to know the other characters better. I really like Nadiem, Lala, and Mo more now since they have more screen time (screen time?!). The story blew my mind and left me craving for more.
This series deserves the hype and I cannot wait for the next one! 🎉

i cannot stress enough that THIS MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE VOLUME (so far). the build up was deliciously slow, and the pay-off is just ✨TOPNOTCH✨

Now I understand why this one is Sir Rexy's favorite. While it started slow the build up was necessary for the twist at the end. It was so action packed towards the latter half that it overwhelmed me in the best way possible. I need Volume 4 right now!

Vol 1 sets the stage and quietly pulls you in with its bold premise: a Philippines at the top of the world. It immediately makes you wonder how it all came to be. Through characters you cannot help but root for, the story builds its foundation with confident worldbuilding and purposeful pacing. And that ending? It lands with a bang. The kind that makes you pause and realize you are in for something far bigger than a simple comic.
Vol 2 brings you closer to the cracks beneath the surface. The scandals, the secrets, the carefully maintained facade of a country seen as an empire all begin to unfold. Beyond the already immersive art, the political undertones become sharper and harder to ignore. It starts asking uncomfortable but necessary questions. What really happens when a nation begins to see itself as superior? & more importantly, what does that do to the people living within it?
Then Vol 3 arrives & quietly locks the door behind you. Because this is the moment you realize you are fully invested. There is no casual reading anymore. You are in it. Keeping readers hooked when the full series is not even completely available yet is not an easy feat. It takes more than shocking reveals. It requires characters that make readers think, tensions that feel intentional, & a narrative that makes future volumes impossible to ignore. And they did not just manage it. They absolutely delivered!!
I also have to rave about the art in Vol 3. It has always been impressive to me, but John Ray clearly leveled up here. There is a new sharpness to the visual storytelling that makes you slow down and really look. The expressions linger. The framing feels more deliberate.
So yes, you will probably keep hearing about this series. Its one of those series that earns the the conversation around it. You might want to see why. ☀️

Waaaaaaahhhhhh…. that’s the overall feel when I finished reading Maharlika Volume 3. Just when I had it all figured out and things were going where you think it will go, then a rug was pulled under my feet so fast that before I realized landed smack on the floor, face down.
Maharlika is a sci-fi graphic novel / comics where in an alternate world, Philippines is a superpower after winning the revolution from Spain. As with any empire, there are separatist movement and rebel forces destroying the peace. As Maharlika tries to track down these groups, they are also keeping secrets from everyone, secrets that make Maharlika what it is now.
I re-read volumes 1 and 2 before going in to Volume 3. And re-reading those two volumes makes me appreciate the story more and more. Just as I’m preparing myself for what’s in-store for the next phase of the story, I wasn’t prepared for that mind boggling ending. I have to re-read the past few pages, hoping I read wrong, or hoping it will have a different ending. But that ending somewhat gives us some closure in one aspect and in another, it leaves a wide open gate.
Not only this is my favorite volume but this one will stay with me for a long time.. one of the books that can live rent free in my mind! Maharlika is a 6 volume series and it is only halfway through. Go do yourself a favor and read this series, it is never too late!

UNBELIEVABLE, I was proud of myself for following the clues and figuring out some of the reveals before the characters got there. But, then came the last chapter and wow. I don't know what to do with myself until vol 4.
PLEASE read this series if you like anime, manga or just a wellmade mystery. It's ambitious as hell and I hope they stick the landing because I am invested.
