The Unfamiliar Familiar Emporium: A Cozy Pet LitRPG

Rate this book
Anyone can sell a black cat to a witch. But a flaming reptile with a penchant for arson? That takes some finesse.

While most country boys don’t dream too far beyond their fenceposts, Will Henderson doesn’t believe in limiting dreams by location.

And certainly not by species, either.

He knows too well that even the wildest and most ornery magical creatures can become incredible Familiars. So when his chance finally arrives to open his own Familiar Emporium, Will doesn’t hesitate to pack up his humble life— and the local undead Ghost Dog— and head for the big city.

But moving to such a sprawling metropolis doesn’t only mean a shocking change of scenery for Will. It means leveling up his Familiar Handler abilities at last, unlocking access to the portals of adventure, and gathering the very oddest Familiars for his ever-growing shop.

Here’s hoping that city life doesn’t eat him alive in the process. Or the dragons. Those definitely bite.

4,5⭐ if I wanna be picky but I had a great time reading this.

That was actually so freaking cute, what the hell? The writing style was simple but that just left more space for the world building and the main character to shine.

I've never read LitRPG before and I'm so glad I picked this one up. I don't think I would have liked a more battle-centered type of LitRPG with the whole skill tree thing, but because this was more about how Will could improve his skills with the critters, and most of all upgrade his shop for the wellness of the future familiars, this felt more..... Idk, organic maybe?

Also, there was no romance which I'm so grateful for. I'm tired of authors forcing romance plots into stories that don't fit them.

Anyways, cool world building, sweet MC, cute critters, a little bit of adventuring. All in all, a very cozy read.

Delightful

A charming and relaxing tale. If you're one who loves animals and likes the people who card for them , this book should be on your list . I smiled pretty much all the way through and I do hope the author writes a sequel.

Sweet cosy fantasy with mild LitRPG elements (the shop has stats, but it’s not the endless and repetitive stat sheets and item characteristics you get with some LitRPGs—just enough to give a regular overview). I enjoyed both the tropes and the twists, but most of all I just loved the world building and animals we meet. I can’t wait to see what happens to Will, Felix and Nick in book 2 and I have never been so invested in a Good Boy finding his perfect match! If you enjoy lush and varied landscapes, creatures you are desperate to cuddle and a possibly sentient shop out to save the magic system one familiar at a time, this is definitely the read for you.

WOW. This book is truly so sweet and cozy and you know it's a good ready when it's 400+ pages yet you're still not ready for it to end. I would have glady kept reading about the life Will is making, the friends he meets, and ALL of the familiars that become part of his shop and he helps people find the companion that resonates with their soul.
The story line goes at an easy pace but doesn't feel slow and it remains sweet and cozy while still having certain issues in the world that will hopefully be improved as the series progresses.
This was my first read by this author and I deeply hope we get a book #2 on the way soon or at least a release date

My reviews are my own. If you liked this book or not, I respect your opinion.  This is merely my opinion, so let's keep it courteous. My review is honest and voluntary.

I really enjoy the mind of this author and their brainchild. I loved the Tonic Shop at the Edge of the World, and I'm expecting the second book! This one has the same feeling of magic and discovery. Love the magical creatures and the growing system. The characters, even small ones, allow the reader to imagine them based on their personalities. How can you despise someone in a few words and love others? Great writing and world-building. Enjoy the low-to-no angst stories too, as I experience enough stress in real life to have to deal with more on paper. I just had a few minor issues, maybe I'm being too picky, so I apologize ahead of time. I gave the book 5 stars, nevertheless, and can't wait for the next one!

Issue 1 - Does the MC have eidetic memory? At the beginning, he is describing things verbatim from memory, which seems weird. It would have made a bit more sense if he were pulling information from a memory system or something.  He did the same with other beings later on.

Issue 2 - He painted a small store burgundy, which is a dark color and makes things look even smaller and cave-like. The colors in another book were also a bit extreme, so maybe that is the author's taste. Which is cool, just sharing the dark colors versus small places theory. I do get that the stores around the area have extreme colors too.

Issue 3 - A tad repetitive when going over the same descriptions again, for example, when he describes the owl all over again rather than just sharing the "additional information".

Issue 4 - Although the author introduces a gay character briefly, later in the book, when the Lakemer people are discussed, the author talks about men and women being only attracted to the other sex. I believe the authors need to be careful and not enforce social beliefs about heterosexual relationships as the only norm. Love is love and attraction is attraction, regardless of sex. Close to the end, they also talk about him meeting a "nice lady", as if that is the only choice, especially in a magical world, there should not be these preconceptions of what is right or wrong.

Issue 5 - The nobles (Hector Mai) talk about humility at the end, but they are stuck-up characters throughout all of their exchanges. They believe they are magical royalty, and not only he, but all their family. The MC also supports the behavior when both Hector and his daughters are disrespectful to him in many ways. I know he is just trying to prevent drama, but you should never let others step all over you based on social standing. So I would like the MC to be more vocal about it when others put him or his down.

I was incredibly happy that the book focused on adventure and growth, and it did not introduce romance, which was a significant issue for me in previous books. I do hope that the series focuses on him, the store, and all the magical beings, and not romantic drama! That said, I have an inclination that the Kassandra character might be brought back in the future, but I'm hoping strongly that doesn't happen! I would love for Will to get MANY unique familiars of his own, like a dragon, and the doggy!

On to my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!

Don't miss any of this author's books!

Every book I've read by this author has been a joy to read. The characters have distinct personalities, negative or positive, and generally are never just one or the other. The primary character usually faces some hardship requiring trust in himself, and another. Perseverance is always necessary, no matter the obstacles. Faith plays a vital part in much of the adventures. I'm a book dragon when it comes to this author. I chew through his books, usually in one sitting because I can't put them down, even if it means staying up all night!! Pure pleasure in reading.

Heartwarming Bonds and Cozy Adventures—Ready for More!

One of the most delightful parts of The Unfamiliar Familiar Emporium was how familiars formed that perfect connection with people—not forced, but natural. Will’s hands-off approach made these moments feel genuine and cozy. I’m especially intrigued to see if GD might find their match in a future installment—no spoilers, but it’s a fun thread to pull. The mix of day-trip adventures, shopkeeping, and Will’s growth made it a joy to read. This cozy LitRPG left me smiling, and I’ll be ready for the next chapter!

Feel Good

I love feel good stories and this is one of my favorites that I have read recently. Will truly cares for all the animals he encounters and treats them with respect. It’s an attitude I hope to see more in our world. This book has tons of cute critters in it and a protagonist who manages to persevere and grow despite coming from a small village and moving to a big city. He makes lots of friends and finds his spot.

4.5⭐️

Absolutely loved this book. Anything to do with animals and mystical/magical ones at that and I am on board. Will comes off as a warm, strong willed and principled young man. The book seems to follow the monster of the week, or in this familiar of the week format. I enjoyed seeing Will match people up with their other half in the form of familiars and see his shop grow with him. I am looking forward to the 2nd book but I am sad that I have to wait so long for it.

Another Great Read

I don't know how this author does it, but every book I've read has been great. Wonderful characters, intriguing plots, interesting vivid settings and situations, and all well written. Im hoping there's A book 2 coming real soon, because I can see myself getting lost in this series.

This was a sweet book and a nice story, but it lost a star because it spent a little too much time reviewing statistics and "reading" text book entries, enough so that it became difficult to find the plot at times. I do really enjoy cozy slice of life books, but I feel there still needs to be a story arch, and while there was one here, it got a little obscured at points.

Imagination!

Fun, entertaining and offers a new world of amazing animals and magic. A bit too wordy at times but describing something new sometimes needs that. The RPG part wasn’t really necessary to this story (that I could tell, I’m not a pro) but maybe it will be more valuable in the future? Good for young teens and up! A bit of language, a bit of violence.

interesting read

Another shopkeeper novel but this time it’s a seller of Familiars. A magical shop, adventures, and many many creatures. There’s no real climax. The book is the story of about 2 months in a young man’s life and his quest for stock. No real high points or low points. Just an interesting, relaxing read.

Great book

Enjoyed reading this book it was nice and cozy. Light on struggle, but still got to see the main character fighting against the common wisdom of the day which is not taking any risk.

love it

Can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
It was a lovely cozy and adventures read. A bit of everything, leveling, cozy, adventure, dash of future romance.
Just as nice pace, not supper fast and not supper slow that becomes boring, just right.

Fun!!!

Who loves Whom, and what and why. People and critters of imagination. That’s who. In a world where all can get along, and seemingly most do. Some do-not. But then when speaking with Dragons, or each other, this story shows it’s best to be polite!
