CLEVER!

Rituals and routines are what make delivery driver Lenora Sforza feel safe.

Until the morning that she finds a regular customer bludgeoned to death.

This SHORT STORY reads like a Police Procedural-one where Lenora could hold the key to solving the mysterious crime.

Will you spot the CLUE?

I was unfamiliar with this author or her work, but I have been listening to each of these short stories on my morning walk this week, and it’s been a really good collection so far!

Lauren Oliver’s “A Fatal Delivery” is the 4th short story in Amazon’s new “Deadly Ambition” collection-stand alone short stories written by different authors about greed, control, or the sinister side of making dreams come true.

They can be read or listened to one story at a time or in one bingeable sitting-this one is about 39 pages long!

AVAILABLE now to read or listen to if you have Amazon Prime

Delivery driver Lenora is someone who finds comfort and safety in routines. She loves delivering packages to her regular customers. They are like friends to her. So it feels like her whole world comes crashing down when she tries to deliver a package and notices one of her regulars has just been bludgeoned to death.

An interesting protagonist. A solid mystery with a clever twist. Pretty good, all things considered. Unfortunately, the writing style just isn’t for me. I had trouble staying focused, and it never grabbed me. Personal feelings aside though, it’s still a solid thriller. This short story should work better for the right audience as it does have quite a few things to enjoy.

Unforatunatley the only connection I felt with Lenora was that I myself thrive on order, control and routines.

the setup…
Lenora Sforza is a delivery driver, an ideal job for someone who lives her life driven by order and routine. She’s meticulous about following her schedule and patterns so when she arrives at Anne Bridges home, the woman isn’t there to greet her as is her normal behavior. Lenora finds her bludgeoned to death inside, her nephew arriving on the scene within seconds to later point suspicion in her direction.

the heart of the story…
Lenora’s routines and meticulous records serve her well and lead the authorities in the right direction but will they put the clues together in time?

the narration…
Helen Laser made me think there were multiple performers here! Her voice for Lenora was dead on and her shift to the detective was perfect. No wonder she’s a favorite.

the bottom line…
I knew whodunnit immediately but that’s not the point of the story. The ending is indeed clever but I needed just a little bit more to satisfy my craving for justice. 3.5 stars

Return to Sender
A review of the Amazon Original Stories eBook released on Kindle and Audio on April 1, 2026.
The day that Anne Bridges was bludgeoned to death in her living room, Lenora Sforza had a package to deliver to her.

Well the 4-star streak wasn't going to last forever in the Deadly Ambition series. Fatal Delivery takes some very odd turns in its story of a parcel delivery worker coming upon the dead body of a regular client and taking off without calling the police, putting themselves in the investigation crosshairs while the real culprit is obvious to the reader. It even warrants a 🚨Write Your Own Ending Alert🚨, as the wrap-up leaves the reader at loose ends as to what finally happened.

Soundtrack
As soon as I thought of my lede header (which also hints at a key plot point), the soundtrack of Return to Sender (1962) was obvious. The classic version is by Elvis Presley and you can listen to it on YouTube here or on Spotify here.

This is a very clever short story that could easily be part of a longer saga involving mysterious deliveries and questionable returns. The plot made the mundane intriguing. The narration was well done, adding a layer of suspense. A quick satisfying, entertaining story.

Thoughts
I guess I'm from the minority who didn't like this (?) I was intrigued at first then ended up getting bored 🙈 mind you I kinda gave this book 3 chances as in reread it three times just to triple check if I missed something somewhere since it was only 37 pages so no harm done but unfortunately it did nothing... With that being said I will give this author another go as I do have her other books on my TBR

I thought this was a clever, well-crafted short story in Amazon's Deadly Ambition collection. The characters, especially Lenora, were well-developed for such a short piece and the ending was very creative. My favorite in this collection so far.

Definitely understood Lenora and connected with her (fairly sure she's neurodivergent).. the ending had me Frustrated and wanting to smack the smug smile off the culprit's face grrr 😠.

I like to think karma came around for that character in a big way !

I guessed who the culprit was but it didn't damper my enjoyment of the story.

Imagine telling this story of your work day to others, eep!

A Fatal Delivery
By Lauren Oliver
Rating: 3.75 stars

Lenora is a package delivery driver. She is driven by routine and familiarity. She knows the families on her route and has friendly interactions with them.

Except one day the routine is not so routine. Ann who lives in the Milton House is uncharacteristically absent. She does not answer her door. Lenora listens and hears only the soft sounds of her pet.

She senses that something is off, that something may be wrong. So she opens the door and steps inside. She discovers Ann’s body, her dead body. She freezes, she’s in shock.

She is startled. Ann’s nephew enters the room. He’s been in the shower and is wearing only a robe. He finds the body and screams to Lenora to call for help. Instead, she flees the scene in a panic.

On departure she grabs the outgoing package, a return. Scans it, and slips it to the back of her truck and leaves.

I’m not going to tell how this ends. You’ll need to read to find out. This is a short story and is part of the Deadly Ambition series. Available on Kindle Unlimited.

This was a murder mystery that didn't deliver. The only decent section was the beginning when it described Lenora's thinking patterns because she was obviously on the autism spectrum; the way she coped with her neurodivergent symptoms was interesting. Lenora was a capable delivery driver until she found Anne, one of her customers, murdered. From that point onwards, it is obvious who killed Anne. Soon Detective Rourke, the police officer investigating the crime was also sure who the killer is, but doesn't know how to prove it. Near the end, Detective Rourke appears to be close to solving the murder and arresting the killer, and then the story shifts to a scene that suggests that the killer has successfully disposed of the evidence. The narrative ends. So it is a predictable murder mystery, except for having an unfinished, and consequently, highly annoying, ending. 1.5⭐️

my, so he got away with it? I mean, the evidence was sterilized and disposed of! Oh, poor Annie.

I’m liking this new Amazon series so far, but this is probably my least favorite. Most parts were boring, though it did pick up well at the end.

A tense domestic-suspense short story with a solid premise, following a delivery that quickly takes a dark turn.

The highlight for me was definitely the concept itself. It’s an ordinary setup, but one that works really well for this genre, especially in the way it makes you think about what delivery workers might unknowingly walk in on. I liked how fast-paced it felt, the sense of unease, and the way the ending unfolded.

This one didn’t stand out quite as much as a couple of the other stories in the collection, but it’s still a great addition and worth picking up.

2/5 🌟

I did not enjoy this as much as The Roomate by Andrea Mara (#2 im Deadly Ambition series). The mystery was a bit too simple for my taste. The character ensemble was a bit too small. Also I think I would have preferred reading the story from Lenora's POV which I actually thought would be the case when I read the blurb.
Would definitely classify this as howdunnit rather than a whodunnit mystery!

My rating for Deadly Ambition series-
(Not reading in order)
1)The Roomate(#2 by Andrea Mara)-3.75/5🌟
2) A Fatal Delivery(#4 by Lauren Oliver)-2/5🌟

Lenora is a delivery driver. She lives on routines. That is, until she went to deliver a package to Anne, a regular customer, and found her dead. The police do not seem to have any clues as to who might have killed Anne. Her nephew believes that Lenora killed her. The police don’t agree, but they do think she is the key to finding the killer. Especially because they made her an accomplice.

This is a novella/short story. I mean it’s really short – only 39 pages long. And I think that because it’s only 39 pages it didn’t really work for me. It took more pages than I would have liked with just a lot of telling/setting up. I think this story line is one that needed to be flushed out more. It was just kind of a let down.

Also, I didn’t like the ending at all. I don’t want to give anything away, but the reason why the killer got away with it seemed so far-fetched – and what I mean is the person that had the evidence in hand.

This is part of a series, The Deadly Ambition series, but is a standalone read.
