I was never meant to descend into the world beneath the waves— never meant to fall into the orbit of a Sea Elf whose power could shatter oceans.
He is danger wrapped in control. Cold. Commanding. Untouchable.
His city is beauty honed into a weapon. His restraint is legendary. And yet the way his gaze lingers tells me he wants me as much as he fears what I awaken in him.
I don’t belong in his realm of tides and shadows, where ancient magic stirs and secrets are buried deep. But every step closer pulls me under—desire tightening, temptation burning hotter than the sea itself.
The truth I uncover could ignite a war. Loving him could destroy us both. Leaving may already be impossible.
Because when the ocean begins to rise and everything he’s sworn to protect is threatened, I understand one dangerous truth—
The sea isn’t the only thing capable of burning. And I’m done resisting the fire between us.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Donna Grant weaves a captivating story of forbidden desire, dangerous secrets, and impossible choices in this seductive installment of her acclaimed Elven Kingdoms series.

📖 Kalyani is a human, set out to help her people defeat the Masters in any way she can. Varum is a sea elf determined to keep the Sea Elves safe. When their paths cross he takes her his city to find out more information. Danger surrounds them as humans are strictly forbidden from entering the sea elf city. They must figure out if they can trust each other and find the information they need to protect their people and get out of the city alive.
✨ There are so many things about this book that I loved. Despite this being the fifth book in a series, it read almost like a standalone. Still connected to the other books however, we were given enough information that it wasn’t hard to follow the connections and the overall goals for the characters.
Kalyani was so strong and determined to help. She is fiery, stubborn and so brave in the face of the dangers around her - everything I want in my FMCS. Varum is reserved and insistent in his intentions to protect the city with a wall up to protect himself from the disappointment of others - a swoon worthy book boyfriend. I loved how their relationship developed, each giving a little bit into their forbidden desire.
🩵 I will absolutely be going back and reading the other books in the series and cannot wait to continue this story further!
I always enjoy a book by Donna Grant and have loved her Dragons and Reaper stories so was keen to read about Elves that live in the oceans . So imagine my surprise at discovering this is book 5 in this what I thought was a new series ! Oh well as usual I was captivated and coincidentally so was the heroine Kalyani hehe ! She’s the prisoner of Sea Elf Varum who saved her although truth be told she really does not believe she needed him to rescue her . What follows is obviously a slow romance but we learn of mysterious dissapearences and as this ends a rather intriguing character named Dain definitely has me wanting more ! Final thoughts are I adored Kalyani , struggled to warm much to Varum sadly but I did enjoy reading this and would recommend this authors books to anyone who enjoys a magical romance story. This voluntary take is of an advanced copy
Quick Summary: A multi-layered, under the sea fantasy romance
My Review: Burning Sea by Donna Grant is book #5 in the Elven Kingdoms series. This novel is categorized as "Romance | Sci Fi & Fantasy." It was released on 5/11/26.
About the Book: "Desire runs deeper than the ocean…
...a captivating story of forbidden desire, dangerous secrets, and impossible choices..."
In My Own Words: A Sea Elf warrior and a human (yet something more) find themselves in close proximity, working to deal with the Masters and more.
My Final Say: This was an intriguing read. It had so many layers and details that I liked. At times, I felt like I was dropped off in the middle (and I was, since I had not read any other books in the series.). There were other moments that I could easily fall in line and understand what was happening. One thing that was immediately obvious was the tension and pull between the leads.
This is the certainly the type of story I could lose myself in...in the right conditions. That is meant in the positive. I want to know more than I know, therefore I shall keep reading. I will likely go back to the beginning and work my way up. I don't want to miss a thing.
Other: I would love to listen to this entire series in the audiobook format.
Appreciation is extended to the author, to the publisher (DL Grant, LLC), and to NetGalley. Thank you for providing access to a digital ARC of this title in exchange for an honest critique. I am grateful for the opportunity.
Interesting This book is set on the planet Zora, where Dragons, Humans, and Fae reside. Elven Kingdoms deal with the different types of fae that are found there. As you might guess from the title Sea Elves exist on this world. More at home in water, they are still able to live on land by having gills on the sides of their necks. But we first meet another elf, whose brother’s story was told earlier in the series. Kaylani has the ability to hold her breath underwater for and unreasonable amount of time. And she loves to swim. On a long swim, she sees a slave ship and decides to single handedly save the slaves and so starts this story. She is saved/captured by a Sea Elf named Varum and taken far from her home near her brother and the beach. Here I feel the story started to drag, as she sits in Varum’s quarters, unable to free herself. I didn’t think that the interactions between Kaylani and Varum really moved the plot along until near the end of the book when it seems that everything has imploded and there is no hope. As always, Donna Grant writes an exceptional story with well-developed plotlines and interesting secondary characters. Readers of this series will get bits and pieces of information that moves the larger story along. Characters from prior and future books make appearances. All of this ensures that readers will continue to want more from this series. Overall, I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next one in this series. I received and ARC of this book from the author through BookFunnel and this is my honest opinion.
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It is the 5th book in the Elven Kingdom series by Donna Grant. I have not previously read any of the I the books in this series but I was able to read this as a stand alone. This was an easy read that kept me entertained and opened up a new interest for me. The villain to hero was perfect and had me rooting for him and our FMC the whole time. The FMC Is a perfect balance of the want to be soft and feminine but the need to be strong and brave. I would recommend this book and I plan on reading the whole series.
Another book where nothing really happens and the storyline doesn’t progress. Most of the book is spent in Varum’s home in the Sea Elf Kingdom where Kaylani is being kept prisoner and interrogated by Varum. A few chapters from other characters trying to figure out how to get Kaylani back but not actually doing anything.
Kaylani attacks a slave boat to free slaves. The slaves jump in the water and all drown or get eaten by shark-like creatures. Kaylani is beat up, chained and tossed in the water to drown. She has gills though apparently even though she is human. She can breath under water but is unconscious. Varum was collecting intel on which Sea Elves were helping the Masters and sees it all. Kaylani is about to be eaten and he intends to leave her to her fate but decides she might have info he could use so he saves her. What a prince.
He takes her to his home which is against the law. Most of the book is Kaylani healing, sitting around Varum’s home alone unable to leave or Varum interrogating her. As soon as she started complaining she couldn’t keep food down and her legs were numb and she couldn’t walk I clocked that she was going to be revealed to be a mermaid. Not a Sea Elf but something different.
There are some chapters with Dain, Savita, and One but they also don’t really do anything. Dain is pining for Reva and One is crushing on Savita.
There was supposed to be a plot twist that changes everything but I’m scratching my head because nothing happened, nothing changed, no new info was gleaned.
There is also no world building. We are in a brand new kingdom with sea elves we haven’t met before and we only ever get to see the inside of Varum’s home and learn nothing about Sea Elf culture other than they keep themselves seperate from the rest of Zora and don’t let humans into their kingdom but they never explain why they are so isolated. What do they eat? How to they live? What is life like under the water? How did they create their homes? What are their strengths and weaknesses? We’re left learning absolutely nothing about Sea Elves.
I’m struggling with this series because the bulk of the books is just repeating what happened in previous books and characters sitting around talking not doing anything and the storyline is not progressing. We’re not getting new info, nothing is changing. The characters are going from strangers to enemies to allies to lovers too quickly. The relationships are not earned. Love is being declared after one night of sex.
I need more action and I need the couple to spend more time getting to know each other before falling in love. If they wanna angry fuck, cool but I can’t understand why Kaylani would fall in love with someone who kidnapped her, interrogated her, was mean, tried to strangle her and kept her prisoner for weeks.

BURNING SEA is the fifth instalment in Donna Grant’s adult ELVEN KINGDOMS paranormal/ fantasy romance series, set in the author’s numerous interconnected paranormal series focusing on the Dragon Kings. This is sea elf Varum, and human Kalyani’s story line. BURNING SEA can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary . The events of BURNING SEA cross over with, and run parallel to the events of book four STORM WOOD.
SOME BACKGROUND: The Elven Kingdoms are being threatened, and their people, including young children and women are going missing. There is the torture and trafficking of humans and elves, and the existence of Moon, Star, Dark, Sea, Mountain and Wood Elves as well as Healers and Readers. Someone is abducting and forcing the elves and humans into slavery, and there are those working from within and from the outside hoping to rescue and make a change. The Council of Masters continues to seek power and control, while the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) and the CCD (Counter Corruption Division) work diligently to find the people involved.
Told from several omniscient third person perspectives including Varum and Kalyani, BURNING SEA follows in the aftermath of an attack against ship suspected of abducting humans and elves but while sea elf Varum watched from afar, collecting data to report back to his superiors, our hero notices a human swimming in the sea, a human whom he rescues from the churning seas but it is against their laws to bring humans to their city, and Varum must hide our heroine or they will both face a sentence of death.
The world building focuses on the protection of our story line heroine, keeping her safe and hidden from the people in charge but Varum begins to suspect all is not well in his home world of Taranargh, and the Council of Masters may be closer than he could have ever imagined.
The relationship between Varum and Kalyani begins as a rescue; a mutual attraction between two people who are about to face the biggest fight of their lives when Kalyani is discovered, and Varum finds himself facing down the people he once called friend. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate.
There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, questionable and energetic secondary and supporting characters including the return of Kalyani’s brother Rohan and his mate Farah, and several of the previous story line couples. We are introduced to Arvind the Tidewarden, and his daughter Tinara, as well as Varum’s friend Niram.
BURNING SEA is a story of secrets and lies, power and control, betrayal and vengeance, acceptance and love. The slow building premise is detailed and dramatic; the romance is seductive; the characters are desperate and charismatic-our heroine will discover she is something more, something of which no one was aware.
This series just keeps getting more intense, dark, and twisty as Donna Grant takes us deeper into the lives of the elves and the humans that control their portion of the alternate reality first introduced to us in the Dragon Kings series. The dangers abound for both humans and Elves alike, with the common denominator being powerlessness and our inability to protect ourselves from those stronger than us. As we learn through each new installment, there is never a shortage of those willing to stand up for the greater good, but only by standing together against those that are seeking power can there truly be a balance of power and end to those determined to take evil advantage of others. I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy this story, but the more we got to know Kalyani and Varum I saw that they were a great team and they were going to be a wonderful addition to the team of fighters. While I can see that the more stories are added to this series, the more the team battling against this evil rounds out and because more unstoppable, I still miss the more romantic and relationship focused stories that were so common when I first became a huge Donna Grant fan. Don’t get me wrong, I will keep reading them, but I’m going into them with a reclassification, knowing in my mind that these are Romantasy stories and not Paranormal Romance. Doing that allows me to realign my expectations and enjoy the plot and world building, the drama and action, and then the short and sometimes sudden romances that form the relationship aspect between Kalyani and Varum. I look forward to the next episode of the series, but I do hope that we get to see the good guys win a few battles soon, because seeing them lose so much is a bit disheartening. Read with an open mind and willingness to have an overall plot cliffhanger, even if the relationship gets a happy ending, and you’ll love the new Elven Kingdoms addition Burning Sea by Donna Grant.
Donna Grant truly treats her Dark Universe like one gigantic, intricate puzzle, and somehow every new installment makes the picture even bigger, more dangerous, and more addictive. At this point, I’ve simply accepted that this woman’s imagination operates on a level the rest of us can only admire from afar.
Burning Sea, the fifth book in the Elven Kingdoms series, takes us deep into the mysterious world of the secluded sea elves, and honestly? Donna Grant made me want to pack my bags and relocate to a magical underwater kingdom immediately. Preferably one without the betrayal, vengeance, and looming danger, but we can’t have everything.
Varum and Kalyani’s relationship begins with a rescue, but quickly evolves into something layered with trust, fear, loyalty, and undeniable attraction. Their romance unfolds slowly against the backdrop of political tension and deadly secrets, making every emotional moment feel earned. The intimate scenes are limited, but when they happen, they absolutely deliver on passion and emotional intensity.
One thing Donna Grant consistently excels at is creating ensemble casts that feel alive. Familiar faces return, including Rohan and Farah, alongside a colorful mix of charismatic, suspicious, chaotic, and deeply entertaining secondary characters. Nobody is entirely trustworthy, everyone seems to have secrets, and I loved every second of it.
The story itself is filled with lies, power struggles, betrayal, vengeance, and self-discovery, particularly for Kalyani, who slowly realizes she may be far more important than anyone ever imagined. Meanwhile, the larger battle against the Masters continues simmering in the background, threading the entire Dark Universe together in a way that keeps you desperate for the next piece of the story.
And speaking of next… Donna Grant, respectfully, can we please talk about Dain? Because if he’s next in line, I am already emotionally prepared to abandon all responsibilities the second that book lands in my hands.
Donna Grant's BURNING SEA, Elven Kingdoms #5, was another wonderful addition to this incredible series. Whie the underlying plot of this series doesn't really sadvance, a lot of information was given. The Sea Elves finally make an appearance and much is learnt about them.
Kalyani is a human who has always been drawn to the sea. Noticing a ship, owned by the Masters, with prisoners on board, Kalyani decides to be brave and tries to rescue them, during the attempt she is severely injured. Left to the sea she is rescued by Varum, a Sea Elf, who takes her to the underwater city of Tarangarh. He promises to return her as soon as she is recovered, knowing if she is found in the city she faces immediate death. Varum has been doing his own invesigating into the Masters and the connection they have to his city.
Kalyani is wary of Varum, especially when he interrogates her about the Masters, she divulges as little as possible not trusting him with everything she knows. They are complete opposites, she is emotional and fiery, while he is stoic, cold, and emotionless, yet he was caring toward her. The chemistry between them was obvious, but the romance was definitely a slow burn. The more time spent together the more they were unable to hide their desire for each other. Would Varum be able to keep Kalyani safe until he returns her to her home?
BURNING SEA was filled with mystery and intrigue. Donna's descriptions were magical. The twist at the end had my jaw dropping, but I still need all the answers. I have so many questions. I cannot wait for the next installment, Dark Ruin, especially if I think I know who it might be about.
A forbidden romance blossoms in the depths of the ocean amidst conspiracies and danger.
Thank you to all the book gods for Varum's ignorance surrounding the Masters and that Kalyani had to fill him in on everything that had happened so far.
Varum's distrust and paranoia battled with his growing admiration for Kalyani. He had a healthy dose of skepticism, but he also kept an open mind while Kalyani shared all the stories. She certainly showed a whole lot of patience and restraint while waiting for Varum to figure out an escape route so she could go home. They were both fairly moderate people, not ruled by emotions, not super passionate either.
The romance between them was warm, sweet, and solid. It was also the main focus of this book, and less about the bigger fight against the Masters. Though, there were glimpses of the other heroes fighting the good fight, with unexpected twists thrown in to keep us on our toes.
I enjoyed the underwater world of the sea elves and seeing Varum find purpose in life again.
This is the series for you if you like steamy romance, elves, dragons, and magic happening on a different realm. It is definitely best to read the books in order. Each book introduces a new couple finding their happy-ever-after, but there is a central plot that carries on from book to book. The Elven Kingdoms series forms part of the wider world of Donna Grant’s Dark Universe and can be a good starting point if you’re new to all of this.
Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I want to shout "THIS IS A MUST READ". I don't want readers to miss out on this book. There is so much going on within the story that closing the book to deal with real life was challenging. The author transports the reader to a new Elven world deep in the ocean that left me in awe of the author's imagination. The description of the Sea Elf city of Tarangarh and how it was created was so fascinating that I found myself writing it all down, not wanting to to forget anything.
Burning Sea is a forbidden romance, not just between a human and an elf, but between someone who lives on the land and someone who lives in deep waters. Sea Elves do not socialize with others. No one but Sea Elves are allowed in their cities. When Varum, a Sea Elf, takes Kaylani, a human, into Tarangarh, he has sentenced them both to death if caught. She has must remain hidden if there is any hope of survival. Who knew forced proximity could be so hot!!!! I found myself reading faster, not wanting to wait to see what was going to happen next.
What happens next left me speechless, blew me away. If you like plot twists; Donna Grant has written a doozy. If you like to have your mind blown; get ready for a wild ride. If you like shock and awe in a story; you can't go wrong with Burning Sea. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book in the series. I was reminded once again why Donna Grant is one of my favorite authors.
A world full of diverse Elven nations, all with a common purpose to eliminate those who enslave.
Elven kingdoms of the sea mix with the humans of the land in this enemies to lovers adventure fantasy. Kalyani wants to be in amongst the danger, helping to free those enslaved and meting out some justice. But with a big brother who wants to keep her far from danger, Klyani resorts to a "ask forgiveness rather than permission" mindset. Which inevitably leads her into a world of trouble.
Varum is well aware of his lower status among his people. He's found out about some of his people assisting with the trafficking of humans and other Elven people and sets out to get to the bottom of it. Then Kalyani gets in trouble and now he's nursing her back to health as well as keeping her safe from his people.
Add in some unexpected allies, betrayal at all levels and a nicely expanding found family of rebels and this series is fast becoming a firm favourite.
Now this story may not move the overarching storyline along a whole heck of a lot, but sometimes it's a nice change of pace to get to know characters you've already met a bit better, see how the new ones fit into the plan and what the next step may be.
Kalyani is all fire and determination meeting Varum’s stoic, calm but icy façade.
The Masters had best tread carefully, these Elves and their beloved are out to bring them down.
Burning Sea pulled me right back into the world of the Elven Kingdoms with its mix of dangerous magic, political tension, and sizzling romance. Donna Grant really shines when creating immersive fantasy settings, and the underwater Sea Elf realm was vivid, mysterious, and beautifully atmospheric. The romance was the heart of the story for me. I loved the push and pull between Kalyani and the powerful Sea Elf , Varium. His cold restraint mixed with their undeniable attraction made for plenty of emotional tension and chemistry. Their relationship developed at a satisfying pace, and the forbidden-love dynamic added just enough drama without overwhelming the story. I also enjoyed the continuing expansion of the Elven Kingdoms world and the hints of larger conflicts brewing beneath the surface. The blend of romance, fantasy, and danger kept the story moving, even if some elements of the series are beginning to feel familiar from previous books. Still, the strong atmosphere and emotional connection between the characters carried me through easily. Overall, this was a captivating and steamy addition to the series that will definitely satisfy fans of Donna Grant’s fantasy romance style.
Donna Grant has delivered another absolute gem! Burning Sea pulled me right back into the Elven Kingdoms with its perfect mix of dangerous magic, political tension, and sizzling romanceu. From the very first page, the story captivated me. The highlight of this book is the immersion and atmosphere. Grant really shines when creating fantasy settings, and the underwater Sea Elf realm was vivid, mysterious, and beautifully realized. Against this backdrop, the romance between Kalyani and Varium was the true heart of the story. The push and pull between them—especially Varium's cold restraint mixed with their undeniable attraction—created intense emotional tension and electric chemistry. Their forbidden-love dynamic added just enough drama to keep me gripped without overwhelming the plot. While some elements of the series are beginning to feel familiar, the strong emotional connection between the characters and the hints of larger conflicts brewing beneath the surface kept the story moving at a satisfying pace. The ending left me breathless and desperately wanting more. If you’re looking for a steamy, atmospheric addition to this series, Burning Sea is a must-read! Note: I received a free Advanced Review Copy (ARC) of this book and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Burning Sea takes readers back into Donna Grant’s richly woven Elven Kingdom, this time diving into the mystical and beautifully atmospheric world of the Sea Elves. The setting is just as magical and enchanting as one would expect, delivering exactly the kind of world-building fans of the genre enjoy.
One of the main aspects to consider is its connection to the rest of the series. The narrative features a large cast of recurring characters from earlier entries, along with their backstories, meaning that the nuances of the plot are best appreciated if you are familiar with the previous books. However, the hints regarding future plotlines and the intriguing appearances of One add a captivating layer of mystery that successfully keeps the reader engaged in the bigger picture.
As for the main protagonists, their romantic journey is steady and well-crafted. While it may not stand out as the most gripping romance in the series, it is a solid and enjoyable relationship that progresses smoothly without any major flaws or missteps.
Overall, Burning Sea is a balanced addition to the saga. It functions well as a stepping stone for the overarching lore, and it will certainly satisfy readers who are following the complete journey of the Elven Kingdom.
Thank you, Donna Grant and DL Grant, for this opportunity to read this ARC!
I used to be obsessed with reading romantasy that combines a romance that has you giggling with rich world-building and drama. This book has all those elements and more. I loved getting to know both Kalyani and Varum, both strong characters striving to protect their people who also didn’t shy away from pursuing a romance, which I found beautiful.
Kalyani is exactly the kind of character I love reading about. Although a little stubborn, she is curious, confident, and steady. I can’t imagine what I would do if I found myself stranded in an unknown place with individuals I had never met before, but she handled it wonderfully. I originally wasn’t impressed by Varum. I found his protectiveness over his people admirable, but a little annoying at times. However, I grew to understand him more as the story went on. Once the walls he had built around Kalyani began to break down, I was able to understand him better and really came to enjoy his personality.
This book did start a bit slow due to the world-building and getting to know the characters, but once it picks up, you won’t be able to put it down. Great read, and I’ll definitely be rereading it sometime soon!

Varum is a sea elf and while in the water he saw a ship and sea elves helping it. The Masters have been kidnapping elves and he knows of sea elves going missing. Varum sees a human swimming up from the deep and bop one of them in the head. A battle begins and the female is hurt so Varum takes her back to his house. No one is allowed in their city except for sea elves so he sneaks her in. Kalyani awakes in a strange house and in pain. She wants to go back to the surface but her captor can’t let her go just yet. Neither trusts the other. They both want to destroy the Masters. Varum starts to interrogate her because he saw something strange and wants her explanation. Kalyani doesn’t know what he is talking about. But when they are discovered, both Varum and Kalyani are taken in and interrogated by the Tidewarden but they both know its death for them. Unless they can escape.
This is such a good story. Suspense. Sea elves. Secrets. Surprises. Steamy. Varum doesn’t trust because his family threw him down and left him when he was young. Kalyani is beautiful and the ocean has always called to her and it gets her in trouble. Voluntarily read and reviewed this book for Netgalley.
This is book 5 in the Elven Kingdom series and it did not disappoint. This book centers on Varyn and Kalyani. Varum is a Sea Elf, who has never ventured beyond the sea. Kalyani is a human, who is drawn to the sea and is on a mission to save her people, who were kidnapped by the Masters. During Kalyani’s rescue mission, she was gravely injured and was saved by Varum. Although, the sea Elves and humans’ interactions are strictly forbidden, he chose to take Kalyani to his realm for treatment, which would be a death sentences if they were caught. This is an enemy to lovers’ book and a slow burn. It took a while for the two main characters to trust each other, but eventually, trust was gained, once they realized they needed to rely on each other for survival, as well as having the same objective, to destroy the Masters. Unfortunately, the Varum and Kalyani were discovered and integrated. They knew they had to find a way to escape, for their survival. Wow…another rollercoaster of a read that will keep you intrigued from beginning to end. DG has done it again. I highly recommend this book, but suggest that you start at the beginning of the series.
Donna Grant has completely outdone herself with Burning Sea! I am giving this book a well-deserved 5 stars because it kept me utterly hooked from the very first page to the absolute end.The absolute highlight of this story for me was the incredible chemistry between Varum and Kalyani. Watching a cold, strictly guarded sea elf risk everything to save a resilient human woman created the perfect slow-burn tension. Their dynamics, mutual respect, and undeniable spark made their romance feel entirely earned and deeply emotional. On top of the romance, the world-building is spectacular. Grant introduces us to the underwater world of Taranargh, and it is so vividly described that I felt like I was submerged right alongside the characters. The atmosphere is lush, unique, and adds a brilliant layer of danger to the plot since Varum breaking elven law to hide Kalyani keeps the stakes incredibly high.If you love paranormal romance with high stakes, fierce characters, and immersive fantasy worlds, you need to read this book immediately. It is an unforgettable addition to the Elven Kingdoms series!
I went into Burning Sea not realizing it was the fifth book in the series, so I think that definitely shaped my experience a bit. I still really enjoyed it regardless.
This is a dark universe paranormal fantasy with that slow, magnetic pull between characters that builds tension in a really engaging way. The atmosphere is immersive, the Sea Elf MMC is very much the “cold, controlled, and dangerously powerful” type, and the ocean setting adds a lot of depth and mood to the story.
The romance has that push-and-pull dynamic, desire mixed with restraint, secrets, and stakes that feel like they could tip everything into chaos at any moment. The world itself feels rich with ancient magic, political tension, and danger lurking just beneath the surface.
Because I didn’t start from book one, I definitely felt like I was catching up at times, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment overall.
I’d rate this a 4/5 for me personally, an engaging read with strong atmosphere and chemistry that I think I would’ve appreciated even more if I had read the series in order.
Finally, we get to see the world of the Sea Elf's; where they stand in regard to the Masters and the location of another Shaldorn (read book 1 of this series for the back history of Shaldorn).
What I like best about this book is how author Donna Grant creates an underwater world that makes one feel like they are in the Atlantis of Elves.
Human Kaylani is drawn to the water and has never understood why her brother Rohan (who's story is in Storm Wood Book 3 of the series) fears for her life every time she goes into the water. Her affinity to water creates a surprising storyline that finally gives her resolution to her unknown abilities and shocks everyone around her
Varum, a sea elf, takes Kaylani hostage and tries to discover what and who she really is. This is against the rules of sea elves and is instant death for both when caught.
This book is about finding one’s identity, self-love, and doing the right things. It’s about loving someone so much that you let them go.
I recommend this series for it's creative world of elves. I give it 5 STARS.
The sea has always called to Kalyani. Try as she might, she couldn't keep from the sea. Only this time, it got her in trouble. In trying to rescue some captives of the masters, she finds herself abducted by a Sea Elf. Slowly but surely, she comes to realize her captor, Varum, isn't out to hurt her. He's looking for information on the Masters, to fight back and protect his people. In taking Kalyani, though, he's put them both in danger. Now they need to work together to discover who is working with the Masters and how do they stop them.
This next installment of the Elven Kingdoms series doesn't have quite as much action as its predecessors, but there is a strain of tension that runs through the entire story. From Varum trying to make sure he keeps Kalyani hidden, to his efforts to investigate the danger stalking his elven city, this story kept me on edge from start to finish. I was highly invested in this story and found it hard to put down It's my favorite of the series so far.
Thank you to the author for a copy of this book. The thoughts and opinions are my own.
Burning Sea wad a captivating and atmospheric addition to Donna Grant’s Elven Kingdoms series, delivering a wonderful blend of dangerous magic, political tension and a deeply satisfying romance.
The heart of this story was the characters and their romantic dynamic. The plot followed Kalyani, a protagonist filled with determination that crossed paths with Variam, a powerful but stoic Sea Elf who carried a cold and calm façade. The romance between them was a beautifully executed forbidden love story. The push-and-pull between Kalyani’s fiery nature and Variam’s cold restraint created a wonderful sense of emotional tension and undeniable chemistry. Their relationship developed at a very satisfying pace, it felt warm, sweet, solid and wonderfully grounded, as both are fairly moderate characters who are not entirely ruled by chaotic emotions.
However, this installment was very character-focused and acted more as a slower-paced detour rather than moving the series' grand, overarching storyline against The Masters.
Burning Sea by Donna Grant delivers a gripping blend of elemental magic, tension, and slow-burn intrigue. Set against the mysterious world of the Sea Elves, the story immediately pulls you in with Varum’s quiet fear that isolation may no longer protect his people from the creeping corruption of the Masters. Kalyani’s fiery determination contrasts beautifully with Varum’s icy restraint, creating a dynamic that feels both dangerous and irresistible. Their relationship simmers with distrust, chemistry, and high stakes, making every interaction feel charged with possibility. Grant excels at world-building here, expanding the Elven Kingdoms with depth while maintaining a fast-paced, emotionally engaging plot. The looming threat of the Masters adds urgency without overshadowing the character-driven core. A compelling installment that balances romance, danger, and fantasy, Burning Sea is a must-read for fans of elemental opposites and richly layered magical worlds.
Burning Sea, Elven Kingdoms is the 5th book in the series, and the book continues to build out the Elven Kingdom storyline on Zora (spin-off from the Dragon Kings). Burning Sea is a forbidden romance, not just between a human and an elf, but between a human who lives on land and an elf who lives in a hidden city under the ocean. Sea Elves do not socialize with others and no one but Sea Elves are allowed in their cities.
Kalyani is a human who was injured when attempting to rescue prisoners aboard a ship owned by the Masters and was left at sea to die. She’s rescued by Varum, a Sea Elf, who was already investigating the Masters. Varum saves Kalyani and takes her to the underwater city of Tarangarh. When Varum, a Sea Elf, takes Kaylani, a human, into Tarangarh, he has sentenced them both to death if caught.
The more time that Kalyani and Varum spend together the more their forbidden romance grows. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series, Dark Ruin!
Burning Sea pulled me right back into Donna Grant’s Elven Kingdoms world. The underwater setting of the Sea Elves felt vivid, mysterious, and completely immersive. Varum and the heroine are drawn together under dangerous circumstances, and I really enjoyed the slow-building romance between them. Their relationship develops alongside political intrigue, ancient secrets, and plenty of action, which kept the story moving at a great pace. One of my favorite parts was the atmosphere of the underwater kingdom. Donna Grant creates a fascinating fantasy world filled with tension, magic, and danger, while still keeping the emotional connection between the characters at the center of the story. There are still many unanswered questions by the end, which makes me excited to continue the series. Overall, this was an addictive fantasy romance with strong world-building, suspense, and a satisfying romance.

Diving into More Elven Kingdom Goodness! Kalyani is a human who feels drawn to the ocean and can swim under the water for long periods of time. Varum is a sea elf who has never seen anything above the ocean. While trying to free kidnapped people from a ship, Kalyani is injured and Varum brings her to his underwater city, which is forbidden and punishable by death. What happens next gives you all the emotions at once. It has a slight feeling of the little mermaid but more mature and intense. A slow building relationship, a touch of ex-girlfriend issues, a growing inexplicable evil, and the excitement of becoming something you didn't know you were. I still wonder how that came to be. I wonder if we will ever find out. The climax was perfection! I can't even tell you how much I love this series. I am hoping to see more of this couple in future books.
Love is off the scales (pun intended) in Donna Grant’s Burning Sea. She weaves a story blending attraction, intrigue, desire, and the growing love between our two main characters. Varum is a Sea Elf working tirelessly to protect his people, who prefer to live in isolation. Kalyani is a human, or is she something else? Varum rescues her after she tries to save passengers on a ship bound for the Masters. He risks everything by taking her to his city below the sea to heal and recover. This mysterious world of the Sea Elves lies deep in the ocean, where no others can survive. If they are discovered, it could mean their deaths. Their attraction, although immediate, grows and develops slowly. Can their love survive their differences? Will they be able to overcome the evil that are the Masters? This installment just keeps the story building…looking forward to the next development!
Burning Sea introduces several new characters in the fight against the Masters: Varum, a Sea Elf, and Kalyani, a human. The two of them meet in the midst of danger resulting in a shaky start to their relationship. But circumstances change and romance grows until a final reckoning with the Sea Elves. The mysterious One makes an appearance at a time of need. Is he friend or foe? There is a bit of a cliffhanger ending, with Dain's condition left pending. As always, Donna Grant provides a sizzling romance with amazing world building and richly detailed characters. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in this series, Dark Ruin, to learn what happens next in the Elven Kingdom.
