The stakes are high, but the secrets are buried bone-chillingly deep in the luxurious, ultra-private billionaire enclave of Paradise Grove, where the decadent sizzle of 365 Days meets the scandalous intrigue of Desperate Housewives in USA Today bestselling Booktok sensation Shain Rose’s dark and edgy romance for fans of Ana Huang, Rina Kent, Marni Mann, LJ Shen, and JT Geissinger.

He was only supposed to be a secret fling. A forbidden kiss stolen in the dark . . .

Not the cold-blooded monster who betrayed me.

Callahan Knight is the Diamond Syndicate’s perfect weapon with honed muscles, lethal control, and merciless loyalty. Even when taking out a rival cartel’s capo—my uncle—he doesn’t flinch. He shatters my family without hesitation, and I swear I’ll never forgive him for that.

But the Syndicate doesn’t care about my hatred. To secure their power, they demand more: A vow of marriage or watch everything we love get destroyed.

Now I’m the unwilling bride living in the luxurious prison of Paradise Grove with the man I refuse to call my soon-to-be husband. Instead, he’s the villain. Enemy number one. My tormentor . . .

But also maybe my undoing.

Because when he looks at me with the same fire we once shared, I can’t decide if I want to kill him . . . or kiss him.

Yet, I refuse to be distracted by his touch or piercing gaze. Instead, I’ll play the part, wear the ring, and say my vows all while I dig for his greatest weakness.

Because he may be the Syndicate’s deadliest weapon—

But I’m just as lethal as the monster I have to marry.

I am so fucking sick of picking up every goddamn book and watching it turn into absolute dogshit in my hands while I sit here with my jaw locked so tight and my eyes burning because I kept hoping one would actually be good. Jasmina is supposed to be some badass syndicate-raised assassin who watched her parents get blown away at six years old and learned how to gut grown men and launder millions, but she gets sold off like a prize pig into a marriage with Callahan Knight, a smug diamond syndicate prick who supposedly protects her family in exchange for her body and a baby. Archer is Callahan's head of security standing guard outside her door every night and the only fucking person in that damn mansion who talks to her like a human being instead of a piece of meat, so they bond by throwing knives in her bedroom, untangling yarn, talking and laughing together like friends. Callahan watches that shit on a monitor and instead of using his goddamn words like an adult, his pathetic baby-dih ego gets bruised and he calls up his fucking ex.

That skank Demi rolls up to the house, and Jasmina hears giggling echoing down the damn hallway, walks out, and listens to that bitch call her family dirt while Callahan stands there mute and lets her disrespect his wife, agreeing that her being down the hall means fuck all. Jasmina pushes the door open to see Callahan swallowing Demi's face with his paws all over her, and then he grunts out knees, and that pathetic ow drops right onto the floor and starts fumbling with his fucking belt while he stands there like a smug piece of shit letting her do it. Jasmina stands there with her hands shaking and instead of burying a blade straight into the spine of the lying bastard who forced onto her exclusivity three hours ago, she walks right up, points a knife at the side piece's throat, and tells her to finish sucking her husband's dick to show her how she does it. What a fucking humiliating pick me circus. She threatens the mistress on her knees and lets the actual cheating fucker keep his neck intact, and then later that piece of shit has the balls to whine that he needed an outlet because his tiny ego could not handle her talking to Archer, blaming the security guard for his own damn infidelity while his wife was two doors down.

This author calls this fucking garbage a romance novel when it is just an abusive mess of pathetic cuckold humiliation porn!! This is what passes for a romance now, a story where the hero cheats and the heroine terrorizes the side piece instead of him. It is just depressing to watch a supposedly tough woman act like a clown over a cheating prick who treats her like dirt.If this is what modern romance writers consider a strong heroine and a swoonworthy alpha male, then fiction is completely fucked!! I am so exhausted atp!!Romance is supposed to feel like an escape, not a punishment where you root for everyone to catch a disease!!

P.S. Just to get the exact fucking details straight for all you nosey girlies, let us talk about his royal highness Callahan and his pathetic little open marriage lecture where he sat there and laid down the absolute peak of misogynistic audacity. The prick with absolute zilch shame told Jasmina that he did not owe her a single drop of loyalty and could hoe around with whoever he damn well pleased, but the second Jasmina tried to match that energy and bring up having her own indiscretions, he clutched his pearls and shut that shit down real quick because his precious wife was not allowed to have fun. So of course peeps it is not technically cheating in because he openly announced that he was allowed to be a slutty little hypocrite while his wife was expected to sit in her room like a good little nun. Apparently a man can hoe around until the cows come home, but a good woman cannot do a damn thing except find out he is fucking around and keep her fucking mouth shut, all because the asshole supposedly cared so damn much about protecting her pristine reputation. What a fucking gentleman. Now where is that darn brick when you need it?

Also Goodreads is currently trying to test my fucking patience 😭 The app won't let me operate properly at all, and when I open it on the web, my homepage is suddenly showing random-ass people I don't even know instead of my actual friends' updates😭 My friends list itself is still intact, but WHERE ARE MY BESTIES' UPDATES??? I just wanna stalk my friends' reading lives in peace, Goodreads!!! 😭💀

"You're not going to have any indiscretions with other men while married to me... I don't care about your reputation, but I'm not marrying a woman who's going to tarnish mine"

"We can trust one another and have that mutual respect, but you don't get to expect me to be faithful to you. I don't owe you an ounce of that sort of loyalty"

(me big man make big rules, me stick widdle twig wherever me please, wait what? me nothing but a drooling hypocritical cumdumpster? how wude😤😤)

At last, Some gems from Excerpt VII; De Virorum Arrogantia et Fuckitudine (On Male Arrogance and Fuckery) of La Sapientia Assholiana:
A coward whose pants are forever unzipped will always write a constitution about his sacred right to hoe around, just as wise elders of antiquity long ago observed that men who throw massive temper tantrums over their wives talking to guards are usually hiding three side pieces.🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

(⭐️⭐️ 1.5/5) I couldn’t connect with it. The plot did not keep me engaged, I unfortunately lost interest pretty quickly. I tried to lower my expectations & just vibe with the romance aspect, but that faded quickly. I really loved Jasmina though. She was strong, independent, and took no shit, but the womanizer mmc ending up with the strong, feminist fmc is almost always a miss for me. Bleh. I don’t care to hear about all the women he’s been sleeping with halfway through the book unless it’s to shit on them. Defending other women, entertaining them, and inviting them to sleep with him still at 60% to “get Jasmina out of his head”? He was ALSO kissing and touching Jasmina the literal whole time, it was wildly unnecessary. It made her unnaturally insecure & made me absolutely despise him. He can do whatever he wants, but she can’t. Then they fall in love somehow. Pass. Where was the connection or the intimacy? It felt like they just gave into it by physical attraction & forced proximity only. Also, don’t write a strong, feminist fmc & make the mmc weak, pathetic, and controlling over her & everything she does. These types of storylines can be done well, I’ve read them, but this just missed so many marks. Instead of these things being a catalyst for angst, they just pissed me off.

Jasmina Ruiz agrees to marry Callahan Knight, a member of the secret - and powerful - Diamond Syndicate, in an effort to strengthen alliances. The problem? They already have a history.

A passionate one-night stand left far more behind than either of them was prepared to admit, and now that they’re being forced into an arranged marriage, pretending their relationship is purely strategic is becoming increasingly difficult. With secrets between them and plenty of reasons to keep their distance, giving in to the chemistry between them would be reckless. But inevitable? Absolutely.

I love an enemies-to-lovers romance, whether it’s the kind where everything changes in an instant or the slow-burn variety where the shift happens so gradually you barely realize it’s happening. This one was definitely the latter.

As Jasmina and Callahan navigated their arranged marriage, outside forces, their own stubbornness, and all the secrets standing between them, watching their relationship evolve was so damn satisfying. It was in the little things - the subtle changes, the moments of vulnerability, the ways they started showing each other they cared. Add in a healthy dose of jealousy and plenty of angst, and the payoff was absolutely worth it.

Sometimes the best kind of love story is the one where you get to watch them fall without either of them realizing it’s happening.

I wanted to love this book. I adored the first book in the series, Behind Closed Doors, and I even liked Callahan's character in the first book. But this one did not hit the mark for me for a couple of reasons.

Also, I did an immersive read where I listened to the audiobook and read the book at the same time. Overall, the narration was fine but it almost felt like the narrators weren't that into the story either because I felt little of the emotions when they happened and thus the narration fell a bit flat for me.

First, there was other woman drama and what I would consider cheating in this book. And that's an immediate turnoff for me. I love a morally gray main character but the kind that would burn down the world for her, not the kind that would cheat on her because he was "frustrated." Nope. Basic romance rules are the second the two love interests touch one another, they cannot touch another. Period.

Second, the FMC was okay but she had some serious issues. The idea was here is a tough, hardnose, independent woman that could take care of herself. Instead we got some genuine poor decision making and a naivete that bordered on childlike. Certainly not I've been a major part of a crime family level of savvy.

Finally, the pacing was off on this. Felt like it was a bit of a slog - oh and the author self-inserted her books into the story which felt kind of cringe - and then it was immediate I'm obsessed with you. Fine. But the whole "mystery" was pretty much the most obvious ever and saved until about the last six pages. So it was slow, slow, slow, slower, and then bam, big climax, issues resolved, HEA all in six pages.

I'm so sad about this. Oddly I think I'll read the next one simply because I've loved Archer since the first book. But this one was a miss. None of the incredible relationship building in the first book and Callahan was no Jameson. Too bad. Two stars.

Themes & Setting: Some definitely dark themes of murder, tortue, and cartel business details. Read the trigger warnings. I felt the themes of finding the family that accepts you are lifts you up were well handled and I enjoyed them. The enemies to lovers theme was next level and explosive !!
FMC: Jas is the best stabby FMC. The amount of times she tries to kill Cal is just fabulous. She is all about family and loyalty !! Smart and while she is willing to do anything she has her morals.
MMC: Cal does not know what he is in for. Its amazing to watch him slowly realize what he has signed up for. Totally a wild ride and entertaining the entire time.
Conclusion: Mmmm dark, delicious and stabby !!! I was totally waiting for Cal and Jaz’s story after reading book one and the hints dropped. This story was absolutely on fire and explosive!! The way the two of them just seem like they are meant to be together but are fighting it is soo fun to watch. True enemies to lovers!!! With a little of she tries to kill him a few times. He kills her family members. Their families for real hate each other. These two have every reason to be enemies … and yet … are so dedicated to family doing things the “right “ way they have every reason to be together.. but will they be able to ??? I just ate up this story as soon as I got it in my hands !!! I had been soooo wanting to hear their story.

Favorite Quote: "Yeah, the whole East Coast coming for me couldn't stop me now, Jas."

🌶️Spicy Alleyway Meets and Dangerous Chemistry.

I absolutely loved diving back into the continuation of Callahan's story with Jasmina. From the very beginning, their chemistry is explosive, and their spicy "meet and greet" in the alleyway set the perfect tone for the rest of the book. The possessiveness in their dynamic, and the "touch her and die" trope is execution-perfection, hitting every single mark flawlessly.

The plot itself is incredibly engaging, balancing intense danger with a highly captivating dynamic. I enjoyed how the marriage contract initially takes center stage, driving the immediate stakes of the story. As Callahan and Jasmina continue to develop genuine feelings, the contract naturally shifts to the background, allowing their relationship to truly thrive. Adding to the tension is the thrilling family drama, as Jasmina tries to uncover and understand the deep corruption her family is involved in. It is so refreshing that this life isn't something she wants any part of, yet she remains a complete ride-or-die for Callahan—just as he is for her. Their banter is sharp, their possessiveness is off the charts, and their intense chemistry makes this a solid read. I cannot wait to move on to Archer's story in the next installment!

💙Enemies to Lovers...For Real.
💎Arranged Marriage
💙Secret Society
💎Possessive & Protective Hero
💙Touch Her & ☠️
💎"Where is My Wife" Energy
💙Dual First Person POV

Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope and this is the best kind with rival families where after his family unalives her uncle, she destroys his billion dollar building. Then when they see each other after…she stabs him. Jas is a no nonsense, smart, fierce, and ambitious female lead. She has tirelessly worked for her family’s business to get a seat at the table. Her attraction to Callahan is something she never saw coming and wasn’t ready for. Cal is a bit of a playboy, ruthless, and has a presence that sucks all the oxygen out of the room. They both are loyal to their families, willing to do anything for them. Her attraction to Callahan is something she never saw coming and wasn’t ready for. Cal is a bit of a playboy, powerful, he has a presence that sucks all the oxygen out of the room. He’s ruthless and is used to getting what he wants.

Callahan and Jasmina’s first meeting leads to a memorable night. Cal is immediately drawn and felt possessive of Jas. He never thought one night with her would lead to an obsession. His obsession only grows after she tries to stab him a few times. That attraction is still simmering when they come face to face a year later. Jas’s family is in trouble and to save their business they agree to an arranged marriage with Callahan’s family. To save her cousin from the arrangement she goes directly to Cal to change it for herself instead, he agrees but he has specific rules. Those rules he tried to set for their arrangement…ridiculous. There’s an incident where he tres to prove to himself and Jas that he can do whatever he wants while she can’t. That does not end well for him.

He loves her violent side nicknaming her Viper. Cal also knows she’s capable of taking care of herself but just wants to be around when things get stabby. Jas’s comebacks are just as lethal as her favorite knives. The number of times she tried to stab him was hilarious. Every interaction felt like it could have ended up with them kissing or injury. The tension was delicious while they tried to fight their attraction. The fighting only made things hotter. Their slightly toxic interactions are addictive and had me engaged from the start. They have a true talent for getting under each other’s skin and their chemistry is undeniable despite really hating each other in the beginning. So you can imagine what they’re like when they stop being stubborn. The spice is incredible and we learn he has an affinity for diamond piercings on a certain body part. That was quite the surprise! I love how how the spice and humor was balanced with the darker elements of the story. This arranged marriage enemies to lovers mafia romance delivers and checks off all the boxes: suspense, secrets, humor, danger, and of course delicious spice.

So why is this not a solid 5 star, because I took off some for the plot. A few things felt forced/rushed with the switch in status of their relationship.

I ate this up.

This is one of those books where you kind of have to suspend disbelief. It's like a soap opera. It's addictive, a bit toxic and notably unrealistic. But it's entertaining.

If you aren't a fan of enemies to lovers, lust to love, then this one isn't for you.

Jasmina grew up in the mafia. From a young age, she was taught their ways. She is a smart, fierce and ambitious. Jasmina is desperate to make a place for herself it what most would consider a man's world. She can shoot, fight and plot. Her greatness weakness honestly might be her undeniable attraction to Callahan.

Callahan Knight is a wealthy, powerful, playboy. He wears a power like a second skin. Born into a powerful family, he is a man used to getting his way and being obeyed. When he meets Jasmina he's immediately drawn to her. She's no nonsense and unapologetically herself. Sure, she stabs him when they meet again years later but he's into it.

Jasmina and Callahan have chemistry in spades. And they're both frankly hot as hell.

Callahan did piss me off a bit with his rules for thee but not for me. Kissing Demi? Bitch ass move. He immediately regrets it, but I was still mad. The only reason I accepted Jasmina not going scorch earth on him is because they weren't officially together or married. Their engagement was still a business arrangement at that point. Fortunately, after that incident, Callahan got his act together.

Once they were both committed, they were definitely a force to be reckoned with.

The surprise or supposed twist at the end was a tad predictable. Mostly, because I had zero faith in Jasmina's family. The betrayal didn't hit me the way it did Jasmina.

All-in-all I had a great time. I finished the book in a day, and I can't wait for book 3. I love me some Archer.

Thank you to the author for providing me with ARC of this book is exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. There were definitely moments where I found myself having to push through because the story felt like it wasn’t progressing as quickly as I wanted it to. That being said, the final 10% completely made up for it. It was packed with drama, emotion, action, and high-stakes moments, and easily ended up being my favorite part of the book. The enemies-to-lovers trope was definitely one of the strongest elements. The enemies portion? Absolutely nailed it. No complaints there. The transition into the lovers side of things, however, didn’t hit quite as well for me. I thought Jasmina and Callahan had solid chemistry.

Jasmina Ruiz is easily one of my favorite FMCs. She is fiery, confident, and completely capable of holding her own, especially as a woman working in such a male-dominated world. Callahan was a bit more hit-or-miss for me. He definitely had his moments, and I loved seeing how deeply he came to love Jasmina. But there were also plenty of times when his behavior gave me major man-child vibes. I found myself feeling pretty indifferent toward him for a good portion of the book.

Despite my mixed feelings about some of the romance and pacing, I still think this was a solid read, especially if mafia romance and enemies-to-lovers are your thing. If you enjoyed the first book, I definitely think this one is worth giving a chance.

Thanks NetGalley for the ARC.

honestly this book started off well but by the time we hit the 45-50% mark i found myself getting soo frustrated :( me and this mmc genuinely have beef now i think...

there's also points in this book where the author is essentially dropping ads/promo for her other books into this one and idk... it just felt SO cringe to me and really took me out the story completely. if it was a quick one time mention itd maybe be fine but this popped up on multiple pages in more of a longer conversation between out mcs. each to their own obviously but this just had me fully removed from the story at that point

i will say, the narrators really helped me stick on with reading this book, they were really appealing to listen to and really helped me to feel and care more about the story. i would love to check out more of their work in the future!

thank you to netgalley and rbmedia for providing me with a copy of this audiobook - this review is honest and voluntarily!

First of all, Corvin King & Elena Wolfe absolutely ate this narration up! These two were the perfect combo to bring this story & these characters to life!!

I was so excited for this book & I loved it so much!! Jasmina was such a badass, fierce FMC! Callahan is a ruthless bad boy MMC who is also down bad and holds a soft spot for Jasmina!

The tension & banter in this one was top tier enemies to lovers vibes!! I absolutely love a good mafia arranged marriage trope & this one hit all the marks!!

Suspense, secrets, humor, spice, and just a dang good time!! This book truly had it all! I highly recommend this book! I think it’s my fave in the series now!! 🤭

Thank you @kensington, Libro FM, RB media, and Shain Rose for this early arc & alc!

Let me start by saying this is a great read but please check out the trigger warnings before you opt in. This Dark Romance if that is your thing you are not going to be disappointed. When it says enemies to lovers they are not kidding, I don’t think there is another book where the FMC tries to kill the MMC with such delight.
Jasmina is one tough cookie. She is loyal to a fault and all about family when Cal shatters her family he places himself in her crosshairs. Watching these two fight their attraction to each other was delicious. Their banter is amazing and even though they fight it is clear they are made for each other.
There is so much to love about this book. If you love mafia books add this to your list.

Shain Rose… WHAT ARE YOU PUTTING IN YOUR COFFEE?! Because whatever it is, I would like some. Immediately. Preferably intravenously. 😂

Book one was brilliant, but book two absolutely understood the assignment and then set the assignment on fire.

And can we talk about this audiobook?!

Corvin King & Elena Wolfe absolutely ATE. THIS. UP.

It has been far too long since Corvin King was in my headphones, and let me tell you… he was worth the wait. But Elena Wolfe? Honestly. Perfection.

Jasmina is exactly the kind of FMC I LIVE for. Give me a stabby, fierce, independent woman who can absolutely handle herself and I am already emotionally attached. She isn’t waiting around for anyone to rescue her, and watching her go head-to-head with Callahan was bloody glorious.

And Callahan…

Sir.

You killed her uncle. You broke her family. You’re the enemy. You’re the Diamond Syndicate’s lethal weapon. You are quite literally the last man she should be marrying.

So naturally… arranged marriage.

Because apparently peace was never an option. 😂

The enemies-to-lovers tension between these two was TOP TIER. The banter had bite, the chemistry was ridiculous, and every interaction felt like it could end in either murder or kissing.

Sometimes both.

We’ve got mafia, secret societies, forced proximity, arranged marriage, danger, secrets, humour, spice and two stubbornly lethal people who absolutely refuse to admit what is happening between them.

Basically, my audiobook headphones were working overtime.

And the suspense? Those twists towards the end genuinely caught me off guard. I thought I knew where things were heading and then Shain basically said, “Cute. Anyway…” and threw another grenade at the plot.

I loved the balance of humour and darkness too. One minute I’m laughing at their ridiculous banter and the next I’m completely invested in the danger, the secrets and the emotional fallout.

But honestly, my biggest takeaway?

STRONG FMCs IN DARK ROMANCE.

I will never tire of them.

Jasmina is badass, vulnerable, furious, determined and completely her own woman. She doesn’t lose her strength just because she falls for someone—and THAT is the kind of heroine I want more of.

Shain, you’ve done it again.

I loved book one.

But this one? Oh, this one DELIVERED.

And Elena Wolfe and Corvin King made the whole thing play out in my headphones like a bloody cinematic experience.

Five stars from me—and possibly a small concern for my blood pressure. 🔥

Now excuse me while I go investigate exactly what Shain Rose is putting in that coffee…

Because I want some. 😂

Huge thank you to Shain Rose and the audiobook team at NetGalley for the ALC in exchange for an honest review.

I started Shain Rose’s In the Dark as a tandem read and listen, and between the paperback and Corvin King and Elena Wolfe in my ears, Callahan and Jasmina pretty much took over my reading time. Thank you to Kensington Books and Recorded Books for the gifted copies. What is it about two people who genuinely have reasons to hate each other that makes enemies-to-lovers SO much better?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Callahan Knight and Jasmina Ruiz come from rival families, and calling their relationship complicated would be wildly underselling it. They shared one unforgettable night, went their separate ways, and when they meet again, Jasmina basically chooses violence. Literally.

Then an arranged marriage puts them on the same side—or at least that’s the idea.

Jasmina absolutely made this book for me. She’s smart, fiercely loyal, stubborn, dangerous, and perfectly capable of protecting herself. I loved that Callahan didn’t need to turn her into someone softer or less formidable to want her. If anything, every time she pulled a knife or challenged him, the man seemed to fall a little harder.

And Callahan? Ruthless Diamond Syndicate weapon to everyone else. Completely obsessed fool when it comes to Jasmina. Watching that realization slowly dawn on him was ridiculously entertaining.

These two have actual enemies-to-lovers energy. Not “we had an argument once” enemies. We’re talking rival families, betrayal, murder, revenge, an arranged marriage, attempted stabbing, and enough mutual distrust to keep a therapist employed indefinitely.

The banter had me laughing, the jealousy was completely unhinged, and the “my wife” energy was STRONG. Underneath all that chaos, though, I really loved watching Jasmina figure out who deserved her loyalty and Callahan learn that standing beside her was far more important than trying to control her.

The audio made it even better. Corvin King and Elena Wolfe perform this in duet narration, and GOOD GRIEF. Listening during my commute definitely made Northern California traffic considerably more interesting.

This is dark romance, so definitely check the content warnings before jumping in. It gets violent, messy, morally gray, and very spicy.

Now tell me: what’s your favorite kind of enemies-to-lovers—the playful rivals, or the “she might actually stab him” variety?

Now? I just wanted him to bleed.
-Callahan Knight

Callahan Knight and Jasmina Ruiz had chemistry from the very start! I mean can we just talk about their first meeting, knowing their families are enemies and they still couldn’t resist the pull to each other.

Jasmina is doing everything she can to prove to her own family that she should be taken seriously and not treated like someone who should have to shut up and listen just because she is a girl. Even when injured, she pulls herself together and focuses on the family and not her own well being.

Callahan Knight knows what he wants and he knows just how to push her buttons. He tried to resist her and boy did he lose! He falls so hard and when his protectiveness kicks in…. Lord have mercy! Even the cat can’t resist him!!

The plot twist at the end was so good! I had suspicions in the beginning but no one wants to believe someone they hold dear is capable of that. I will not elaborate because SPOILERS, but trust me when you read it, it’s so good!!!

This might be my favorite Shain Rose couple and book to date! I am such a sucker for an enemies to lovers romance! Pair that with all of the marriage of convenience, "my wife," and "touch her and you ☠️" moments, plus the quick witted back and forth banter between Jas and Cal, the fireceness of Jas, and the over the top protectiveness of Cal, and i was a goner for these two!

Jasmina was an absolute firecracker! She was smart, strong, defiant, and just a total bada**. She needed no one to protect her, as she was more than capable, and proved it time and again, that she could protect her own damn self. I mean, come on, she burned a whole billion dollar building by herself just out of pure spite, even if it was dangerous or reckless.

And you know I love an absolutey possessive and obsessive MMC and Callahan checked off every single box! Not only did he treat Jas like a queen and was willing to get her what she wanted, but he treated her as an equal in a world where others wouldn't 👏 he also would burn the world down for her and would destroy anyone who dared look at her and would go after anyone who wronged her! I seriously could not get enough of the insane chemsitry these two shared!

If you like:
💍 "my wife" moments
🖤 touch her and you ☠️ moments
🖤 "who did this to you"
🖤 rival families
💍 marriage of convenience
🖤 enemies to lovers
🖤 dark mafia-ish romance

Then you will love these two!

What's inside:
- Secret Society
- Billionaire
- Enemies to Lovers
- Intrigue & Betrayal
- Arranged Marriage
- Touch Her and Die
- FMC That Doesn't Need Saving
- Posessive & Protective

I enjoyed Behind Closed Doors, the first book in the Kept in Paradies series, but Into the Dark didnt really hit the same way for me. I've loved Callahan as a character since the first book, and I was really looking forward to his story, with him being the tough playboy that doesnt get attached; I always love watching those MMCs fall.
I liked Jasmina as a character when she was introduced; I love that she is tough and determined and isn't someone that needs to be saved or needs a man to provide her with security. While she has had to deal with the misogynistic ways of her family, she still managed to find her place there and earn a spot where she is important and needed. With 2 great characters in this story, I was all set to love this book and absolutrley devour it.

Unfortunately, this one fell flat for me. At times the story felt forced and just didn't feel authentic. It felt like the author tried too hard to incorporate certain scenes or tropes and didn't let the characters tell their own story. I did enjoy the enemies to lovers aspect and the way the book started, but the relationship building was weak and the 2 characters were declaring their devotion to each other without enough to get them there.

Overall, the book was OK to read once, and I appreciate Kensington providing the opportunity for me to read this book early.

Let me just say, the banter had me kicking my feet and loving these two! Jasmina is a fierce woman and she definitely lives up to that nickname of Viper! And let me just say I’m here for all those stabby moments! And then Callahan is literally obsessed with Jas from the first night they met. Despite being enemies, that tension is THICC from the beginning! This was sassy and spicy mafia romance that I devoured!

Read if you enjoy: mafia/crime syndicate, touch her/him and die, arranged marriage, secret society, forced proximity, one night stand, enemies to lovers, found family, obsessed, down bad

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from Shain Rose, and as if that wasn't exciting enough, I also received a signed advanced copy when I met her at The Well Red Damsel's From Milwaukee, with Love! event this past weekend. Needless to say, I was counting down the days for Jasmina and Callahan's story, and it absolutely did not disappoint.

There is just something irresistible about combining enemies-to-lovers with an arranged marriage, and In the Dark delivers that combination in the most explosive way possible. From the very first chapter, the tension between Jasmina Ruiz and Callahan Knight practically crackles off the page. These two have every reason to hate each other, yet their connection is impossible to ignore.

Jasmina quickly became one of my favorite heroines. She is fierce, stubborn, fiercely loyal, and completely capable of handling herself. Whether she's throwing out razor-sharp comebacks or reminding Cal that she always has a blade within reach, she never backs down. What I loved most is that beneath all that toughness is someone who would sacrifice everything for the people she loves. Her devotion to family drives so much of her character, making her both formidable and incredibly easy to root for.

Callahan Knight is the perfect match for her chaos. Ruthless, powerful, possessive, and used to getting his way, he finds himself completely unprepared for the hurricane that is Jasmina. Watching him slowly realize just how deep he's fallen was one of my favorite parts of the book. For everyone else, Cal is the Diamond Syndicate's cold-blooded weapon. For Jas? He's hopelessly gone, even if it takes him a while to admit it.

The chemistry between these two is absolutely off the charts. Their relationship is messy, dangerous, obsessive, and packed with enough tension to keep the pages turning. The enemies-to-lovers payoff felt earned because these families genuinely hate each other, and neither character simply rolls over to make the relationship work. The constant power struggles, jealousy, banter, and moments where Jas repeatedly contemplates murder made for some seriously entertaining reading.

I also appreciated that neither character loses themselves in the relationship. Jasmina remains strong and independent, while Cal learns to support rather than control her. Their partnership ultimately works because they challenge each other, respect each other's strength, and share the same unwavering loyalty to the people they love.

The story also delivered several twists that completely caught me off guard. The emotional reveals toward the end hit hard, especially as the truth behind certain events came to light. My heart broke for Jasmina, and I admired how Callahan gave her space to process everything rather than forcing his perspective on her.

My only slight criticism is that the ending felt a little rushed. After such an intense buildup, I would have loved a few more chapters to fully explore the aftermath and tie up some lingering questions. Still, it wasn't enough to take away from how much I enjoyed the journey.

Overall, In the Dark is dark, addictive, violent, spicy, and packed with unforgettable chemistry. If you love arranged marriages, warring families, obsessive heroes, strong heroines, and true enemies-to-lovers romance where both characters have legitimate reasons to hate each other, this one absolutely delivers.

Book 2 of Kept in Paradise Series

Tropes:
🖤 dark mafia romance
💙 enemies to lovers
🖤 arranged marriage
💙 secret society
🖤 forced proximity
💙 possessive MMC
🖤 billionaire romance

The second book in the series did not disappoint!!

The story follows Callahan Knight and a mafia princess, Jasmina Ruiz. Wow the tension between these two! They are sworn enemies after the incident that happened in book 1 (no spoilers 🤫) but now they must enter an arranged marriage to benefit both families.

This is a true enemies to lovers romance. Jasmina was fierce, defiant, quick witted and I lost count how many times she tried to kill her future husband. She was a total badass throughout the entire book. Cal was cold, smooth but I loved watching his possessive side come out. Even when Jasmina was trying to kill him, he was sweet and loved her violent side. The banter and explosive tension was everything in this book!

I loved when they started opening up to each other, they are my favorite couple of this series so far! And the plot itself around the rival families was fast paced and interesting.

The audio was fantastic! Corvin King and Elena Wolfe brought these characters to life - adding to the tension.

Overall, I recommend this series to anyone who loves dark mafia romances!

I had the pleasure of receiving this as an e-ARC & ALC and voluntarily will be giving my honest review. I absolutely loved the Second Book in Kept in Paradise Series. The banter was on point and lo ed the chemistry between the two!! I can’t wait for the next book in this series!! Chefs kiss.

“He was only supposed to be a secret fling.

My tormentor . . .

But also maybe my undoing.”

🎧 ALC REVIEW — In the Dark* by Shain Rose
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was SO excited when I heard we were getting a second book in the Kept in Paradise series, and this one did not disappoint! I received an ALC through NetGalley, and the narration was AMAZING. Elena Wolfe as Jasmina and Corvin King as Callahan in duet narration?! 🤌🏻🔥 They absolutely brought these two to life.

This audio had me on the edge of my seat!

Callahan fell for Jasmina from the moment he first laid eyes on her, but Jasmina absolutely FORBIDS herself from falling for him. He’s the enemy—the leader of the Diamond Syndicate. She’s a mafia princess. The two of them should NOT go hand in hand…right?

The banter. The tension. The chemistry. THE NICKNAMES. 😂 These two had me laughing one minute and completely invested in their tension the next. Their dynamic gave me major Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in *Mr. & Mrs. Smith* vibes—two strong, dangerous people constantly going toe-to-toe while the chemistry between them is absolutely undeniable.

I especially loved Jasmina. She wasn’t waiting around for someone to save her—she was the heroine of her own story. She’s independent, fierce, stubborn as hell (something I can definitely resonate with 😂), and incredibly strong. The pain and tragedy she experienced before being forced to leave with Callahan was heartbreaking, but it also showed just how much strength she had.

And watching those walls between Jasmina and Callahan slowly start to crumble?! 🫠 I loved seeing them begin to trust each other, let each other in, and eventually fall for one another when neither of them was supposed to.

Then those final twists and turns came out of NOWHERE. My jaw was on the FLOOR. 😳

Romance, danger, hilarious banter, tension, two strong characters who refuse to back down, and twists I did not see coming—this one had me hooked.

Elena Wolfe + Corvin King + duet narration = PERFECTION. 🤌🏻

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ALC, LOVED IT!!

Thank you The Smuthood, Kensington, and the author for a copy of this book.

4.5 rounded to 5

Another great installment in Paradise Grove. This is a dark mafia romance for sure, with more insight into the secret society of the Diamond Syndicate Callahan and Jasmina are true enemies to lovers, their families have been at odds for generations. They have a one night fling, and go their separate ways. One year later, they are thrown back together in an arranged marriage so Jas can save her family's legacy. I loved the banter between the 2 of them, and that Callahan was all in, as soon as they met the first time, he just had to convince her to trust him.

Feral, but Emotionally Meaningful

Thank you to NetGalley and RBmedia / Recorded Books for providing an advance listening copy.

⭐️ 5/5 | 🌶️ 5/5 | 🎧 5/5

In the Dark gave me exactly what I hoped this book would be: dangerous, morally gray, intense, wildly possessive, extremely spicy, and somehow still built around a relationship where the heroine’s agency actually matters.

Jas is sharp, capable, and deeply conditioned to treat vulnerability like a liability. What made her arc work so well for me was that the book never asked her to become less dangerous in order to be loved. Instead, it gradually made room for softness, care, preference, protection, and being chosen to belong to her too.

And Cal? Sir. “Not soft” is simply not a credible defense. 😂

What sold me on their relationship was that he did not earn Jas by overpowering her. He increasingly earned her by respecting her teeth. Again and again, the book distinguishes possession from choice, and that mattered enormously in a forced-marriage setup.

Their chemistry is completely feral. Mutual jealousy, knives, possessiveness, body marking, “Viper,” and behavior that would get everyone involved sent directly to therapy in another genre. 😂 But this is dark romance, and the toxicity is intentional rather than disguised as healthy relationship behavior. More importantly, Jas actively participates in the chaos instead of simply enduring Cal’s.

The external plot is comparatively quiet for stretches, especially for a nearly fourteen-hour mafia romance, but I genuinely did not care. The relationship and character work carried the runtime so well that I did not realize how long the audiobook was until I was already staying up far too late to finish it.

Plot? Barely.
Vibes? Excellent.
Complaint? None. 😂

And audiobook listeners: this is DUET narration. Corvin King and Elena Wolfe narrate, and that absolutely deserves to be advertised more clearly. Corvin as Cal was ridiculous in the best possible way—menace, possessiveness, softness, sexual intensity, and especially “Viper” all landed exactly as they needed to.

🌶️ Spice is a full 5/5 even for an experienced dark-romance reader. If you are newer to explicit romance, this is probably not the book I would choose as your introductory field trip. Expect rougher consensual dynamics, BDSM-adjacent content, exhibition/public elements, body marking, blood-play discussion, and a generally very explicit sexual relationship.

Content notes: significant family trauma/abuse, trafficking-related material, violence, reproductive trauma, self-endangering behavior, and darker consensual sexual dynamics including blood-play discussion and body marking/cutting.

Who Should Listen?
Dark-romance listeners who want a morally gray mafia MMC who is dangerous to everyone else and soft for her, a heroine who remains powerful within the relationship, arranged-marriage tension, very explicit spice, strong character work, and a romance-first story that does not need constant external action to stay engaging. Bonus points if “feral, but make it emotionally meaningful” is somehow a selling point for you.

💎 Enemies to lovers
💎 Forced proximity/arranged marriage
💎 She’s morally grey, he’s morally greyer
💎 He falls first and harder
💎 ‘My wife’

ARC read, thank you to the author and Smuthood PR for an early copy.

If shady mafia-esque secret societies, organised crime families, and scorching hot enemies to lovers is your thing, this book has it all! This is the second book in the series and follows Jameson’s brother Callahan and his contract bride, Jasmina.

There’s definitely an instalust element to this book, and the chemistry is electric for the one night they spent together a year ago. But when the story picks up, they’re not only enemies from rival families but also find themselves forced into an arranged contract marriage.

Jas is a triple threat: super smart, super lethal, and super beautiful. Basically, Callahan stood no chance! She has a hard exterior and doesn’t let anyone get close to her because she’s been trained to view any attachments as a weakness, but Callahan somehow manages to get through all of her walls.

Callahan is ruthless , savage, and does whatever Jameson and the Diamonds need. But he has a gooey centre that gets decidedly mushy for Jas from the moment he first sees her. He’s a man obsessed and desperate to show Jas that he wants a real marriage because he wants her regardless of any business arrangements.

Their banter was one of my favourite parts of the book. Jas won’t take any crap from anyone, including Callahan, and he takes jealous and overprotective to a whole new level, yet always gives in when it’s something that’s really important to her, particularly her wanting to be treated as an equal.

And the spice! These two nearly melted my kindle a few times! 🫠 The tension is delicious, they both try so hard to fight their connection and when they finally give in, they combust 🔥

Callahan falls first and hardest. He gets so defensive when Jas calls their engagement a contract marriage with an expiry date, and shows his love in a million different ways, both large and small. He stands beside her rather than in front of her, he sticks up for her when her family are railroading her, and he’s determined to earn intimacy with her despite them having been intimate in the past. He also gives her time to process the truth about her family’s businesses, and agency to deal with it however she wants.

These two are so perfect for each other, they’re equally as unhinged and morally grey and they just work. I love seeing Jas’s walls come down and Callahan stripping away the various personas he wears and just being himself with her.

I loved spending time with Archer, Mia, and Franny (especially seeing her order the hardened organised criminals around!) and, if the epilogue is any indication, I am so here for the next book!

Buckle up: long review ahead.. sorry not sorry!

It is incredibly easy for me to love a book, but every once in a while I read one that reminds me there is a difference between loving a book and being completely, ridiculously obsessed with one. In the Dark was that book.

I am a slow reader, esp with physical books, and I genuinely could not put this down. For a book of this size, I flew through it. It was fast-paced, easy to read without ever feeling boring or like filler. There was so much depth in the characters, their relationships, and the themes covered.

Enemies to lovers is by far my favorite trope, and THIS is how I want it done. Give me the tension. Give me the banter. Give me forced proximity & an arranged marriage. Give me two people who can absolutely go toe-to-toe with each other. And yes, absolutely give me the morally gray, possessive, I’ll burn the world down for her man. Cal delivered!!!

But here’s the plot twist I wasn’t expecting:

I think I fell harder for Jasmina than I did for Cal.

And I don’t think I’ve ever said that about a romance.

I’ve loved plenty of FMCs, but usually I’m still obsessed with the MMC. This time Jasmina is the only thing on my mind she completely stole this book for me. Her wit, her strength, her heart, the way she carries herself, the way she loves, the way she stands her ground, everything about this woman!! She felt like a whole person rather than simply written for us to understand why the MMC loves her.

And THAT made Cal and Jasmina even better together. There was real depth to both of them individually, which made their relationship feel earned rather than simply relying on chemistry or tropes. And trust me… the chemistry was chemistrying

I also loved that Spanish was included in parts of the story in an authentic way.

I loved Behind Closed Doors. I loved Jameson and Mia. But Jasmina and Cal?! I’m sorry. A million out of ten. I know there are other characters whose stories I am very interested in getting in ‘hush, hush’, but you could also tell me the rest of this world is just ten more books about Jasmina and Cal existing together and I’d say, Perfect. When does the next one come out?

If you love enemies to lovers, arranged marriage, forced proximity, morally gray/possessive men, “I’ll burn the world for you” energy, banter, spice, and characters who actually have DEPTH beyond their romance, you need this.

Thank you so much to Shain Rose for the opportunity to read an ARC of In the Dark. I already know my review copy isn’t enough because I’m about to go spend money on a physical copy that I absolutely do not have shelf space for

At this point, Shain Rose can just have my money

Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend.

P.S. Coming back to add as a cat mom, I loved loved loved there was a cat!! We love a crazy cat lady!
