Charlotte Hughes published her first category romance in 1987, a Bantam Books’ Loveswept, titled Too Many Husbands, which immediately shot to #1 on the Waldenbooks Bestseller list. She went on to write almost thirty books before the line closed in 1998.

Although Charlotte is widely known for her laugh-out-loud romantic comedies, she went on to pen three Maggie-Award winning thrillers for Avon Books in the late nineties, before resuming her first love, funny stories about people falling in love. She thrilled readers with her hilarious books, A New Attitude and Hot Shot, the latter of which won the Waldenbooks Greatest Sales Growth Achievement in 2003.

Her books received so many accolades that she was invited to co-author the very popular Full House series with mega-star author Janet Evanovich.

With that series behind her, Charlotte began her own, starring psychologist Kate Holly; What Looks Like Crazy, Nutcase, and High Anxiety, creating a list of somewhat kooky but always loveable and funny ensemble characters.

Charlotte is currently launching Tall, Dark and Bad, starring Summer Pettigrew and bad boy Cooper Garrett. She is writing a series set in the Lowcountry that is a WIP.

I’ve been going through all my Netgalley books this past month to keep or delete the books I will review. I was going to just skip this book but the fake romance trope is my favorite so I ended up reading it. There was parts of this that I liked and a whole lot that bugged me.
♥️💔

What bugged me the most is the way the female’s advertising job was described. Like all she had to do was sketch things and host fundraisers. For a book I got from Netgalley that appears to have been reprinted for a more modern story, it doesn’t fit. My bro-in-law works in advertising and it’s a whole lot more than just sketching things on paper… in fact he never sketches things on paper for his work. It’s all drawn up on his computer, so he’s constantly at his desk. And if she works for a big advertising company than she would have a big team of artists that worked for her like my bro-in-law had. He’s branching off and working on his own now (like the h). In a fantasy world I suppose it would be easy to just sketch things and host fundraisers. But then there’s social media to be worked that is never mentioned in the book.

The other thing that bugged me is that the two characters never talked to each other. There was barely any communication between them and because of that they seemed like strangers. There were times where they talked to others instead, which I really really did not like. I even skipped through a lot of that nonsense.

So for these things I didn’t like it’s a 2 ⭐️ and not a 3.

What I did like… well I guess it’s the fake romance because that’s just my weakness. Like giving candy to a kid I loved it. I did like how instead of just having these childish fights they had and walking away they actually did communicate better right after these fights (maybe that’s what got altered during the reprint).

I’m still deciding if I’m keeping this Netgalley book. I might check my library for more of Charlotte’s works.

This book is titled Tall, Dark and Bad. The tall and dark I can see, but what was bad? I was expecting the story of a good girl meeting a bad boy. There was nothing bad about Cooper. He drove a motorcycle and apparently had a reputation, but I'm still not sure why that is. He was sweet and patient and kind. Summer made a lot of assumptions and came across as somewhat snobbish in her opinions - going so far as to assume how much Cooper must make and how much of his salary he spent on this and that.

I wasn't going to continue reading once I discovered the head hops and switches of points of view - sometimes in the same paragraph, but after finishing I'll say the book wasn't bad. The story was mostly told instead of shown, so I didn't get the connection to the characters until the very last pages. The relationship between these two wasn't defined. They were playing a role, and then suddenly they weren't? They barely had a conversation, Summer finding out most of Cooper's past from Warren.

If the story had gone more into depth and explored the relationship between Cooper and Summer, I would have enjoyed it much more.

I don't even know where to start as far as how much I do not like this book. Summer is in marketing and making six figures a year but her grandmother is filthy rich and she's still as naive as she is? Cooper is not a bad guy, not even close, he's anti-bad. I kept hoping he'd tell Summer to go pound sand.

All through this books there were threads of a story that could have been better. Summer is a virgin, she was abandoned by her mother to live with her grandmother, and her grandmother's housekeeper was mean to her not to mention her work environment and the sabotage by one of her coworkers and friend. Cooper is secretly rich and he has a past of being a fighter. All of those could have made for a better story if only the author had latched onto one of those and fleshed it out a little more fully.

*3.5 Stars*

I just read that this is a re-release of this story, that it was written in 1996.
Aside from that, this is a short, quick and fun story, I read the first part with a smile, both main characters, Summer and Cooper, have an instant connection, there are a couple of witty dialogues and amusing situations. But near the end, I started to loose interest, Summer became a little obnoxious and her "vengeance" was very immature.
Also, Cooper isn't your regular bad boy, on the contrary He's extremely sweet and sometimes, a little too patient.
Because is a short book, the story goes fast, but I enjoyed it and would recommend to everyone who's willing to have a couple of hours of joy.

I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

This book is so dated. It was written (originally) in 1996 and has not been updated for 2015. Formatting isn't great and there are some grammar mistakes that need to be corrected.

The story itself isn't bad, but its touted as this hilarious love story. Its really not that funny.

The only plus was that it was well-written, but it needs to be totally revised to be a 2015 book, not a 1996 book - seriously, who wears pantyhose or stockings anymore.

Received an ARC of Tall, Dark, and Bad for an honest review. Charlotte Hughes has written a funny, sexy and entertaining story. Summer and Cooper areas opposite as two people can be. She's uptown and he's a biker. Cute yet hot at the same time.

Bad but good

Summer Pettigrew is an advertisement guru but she works for an old fort who still believes in the good ole boys network. Her partner, Warren at the firm, is useless and is always doing nothing while she does everything. When her grandmother is admitted to the hospital cause she collapses Summer is forced to lie about her personal life. She sets up a ruse with her partner from work and the night he’s supposed to meet her grandmother he sends a proxy. The proxy is his cousin, Cooper Garret, who has his own story to tell and the two don’t hit off at first but looks can be deceiving. Eventually everything comes to a head and things go in a direction that makes you think that lies sometimes aren’t good but can be worth it if you just realize what you have.

This is a previously released novel that proves certain love stories are timeless. It is a southern romantic comedy from a veteran author and showcases the tangled web spun by deceit and lies of omission. I enjoyed it alot, scenes stayed with me when I had to put it down for real life, I laughed often, and at 216 pages it provided great character development. It is a standalone that I recommend for all hopeful romantics.

Summer Pettigrew was raised by her wealthy grandmother after being abandoned by her parents when she was a few months old. To ease her ailing grandmother's concerns about her future, the workaholic advertising agent tells her she has a new man in her life. Her grandmother quickly sets up a dinner to meet him and Summer cajoles a co-worker into playing the part. When the friend is badly injured in an accident on the way, he sends his cousin instead.

Cooper Garrett arrives at the dinner party late, grimy from having to fix his bike on the way. Summer is shocked by the tall, muscular, leather clad bad boy that just walked into the room, so different from the suits she usually dates. Then she is infuriated when he greets her with a very hot kiss. But when her grandmother has another spell, Summer panics and tells her they are getting married. And the web of deception Summer is weaving is matched only by Cooper's lies of omission. Because he isn't what she thinks and it will take a lot to repair this house of cards.

Summer and Cooper's story is a bit unusual. Summer needed a fiance in a hurry and she works with Warren, Cooper's cousin. Warren was going to help her out of her jam, but then he was in a car accident and sent his cousin to help instead.

Cooper Garrett is sexy, bad, and a little rough around the edges. He comes riding up on a motorcycle and thinks Summer Pettigrew is too good for him. So he leaves out some of the story...

Summer is not needing a man right now, just a fiance. Nothing permanent - not now. She and Cooper come to an understanding and the story grows from there. Suddenly the story is so big - they are already having an engagement party!

Summer does not want to cause her Grandmother any more harm. Her Grams is having heat troubles and she plays it up in the hopes Summer will make Cooper a permanent offer. What they don't know won't hurt anyone, right?

Cooper and Summer have to decide for themselves if real love can happen, if the past and pain can be overcome and of course if the truth comes out. Summer does not care what Cooper does for a living - just that he cares about her in a genuine way - not just for show.

Such a sweet story told by a true romance author. Charlotte Hughes has many great books and this one is at the top of the list. I enjoyed the story and found the character development to feel real and honest.

Tall,Dark and Bad by Charlotte Hughes

Summer Pettigrew, a single career woman, needs a fiance to please her ailing (Socialite) grandmother. When her friend can not fill in the spot he sends his cousin, Cooper Garrett. Cooper is not Summers "type". He has a bad boy persona, rides a motorcycle and gets his hands dirty for a living. But summer is determined to pull off this charade to appease her grandmother. Sparks begin to fly between the pair. Although super cautious, Summer is not going to open up her heart and let it get broken. Copper has other plans for the two of them. Will Summer be able to pull off her little scheme? Will Cooper win her heart?

A well written romantic comedy. I did like Summer, she is a determined woman who knows what she wants out of life. Her grandmother was likable as well. Cooper is the total opposite of Summer, but he has qualities that I liked in a male lead. Drama, romance, secrets and humor are through out the story. I enjoyed the humor. I did find the story to be a bit predictable (at least for me). But I am a fan of Charlotte Hughes. I love her writing style and her characters. I do plan on reading more of her work and I recommend Tall, Dark and Bad to those who love a cozy romantic/comedy.

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley. I like Charlotte Hughes and I have most of her other books. This is a reprint of an earlier story now released as a Kindle edition. I was surprised I hadn't heard of this book because I most likely would have bought it in the original format. Who doesn't like a good romance, especially when it involves two people from different backgrounds? They say opposites attract, and Summer and Cooper could not be more opposite. The relationship starts out rocky, and as you would expect, two people with that much antagonism toward each other are bound to have sparks fly between them. But this relationship is built on a lie. Summer lies to her grandmother because she believes she is dying from stress from worrying about her love life. Cooper lies to Summer because he believes she thinks she's is too good for him, and has a chip on his shoulder about it and lies about his finances. When the lies start to unravel, both of them have to face the reality from the fallout. In the end Summer and Cooper realize that they're perfect for each other and are able to work out their differences to move on towards their Happily Ever After.

You can find more reviews Mademoisellesnow BlogSummer Pettigrew gets the call from the hospital that her grandmother has been taken to the emergency room during an important account meeting; it dawns on her that the only thing that her grandmother is stressed about may be her. The fact that she’s still single and haven’t found the one. So she comes up with the idea of getting a pretend boyfriend just till her grandmother gets better. In comes Cooper Garrett, a guy who oozes danger and bad boy.

I loved the chemistry from day one between Cooper and Summer. Love the way that they interacted with each other and how their love for each other grew as the story went on. The author takes us on a ride where we slowly discover bits and pieces of Copper’s life as we read on. I think one of my favourite characters were Henrietta, I just loved her spirit and how much she cares about her granddaughter. And of course who couldn’t fall in love with Cooper who’s rough around the edges but had a heart of gold. The writing made it easy to read and fall into the world and interact with the characters on a different level. There was a solid plot and I just couldn’t put it down until I finished it.

I loved this story, it was so hilarious; Summer Pettigrew is a self-reliant, do it herself overachiever, who never has any time for relationships. When a little white-lie leads to her having to produce a boyfriend out of thin air, Cooper Garrett is not what she expected.

Cooper does his cousin a favor, he just never expected to be attracted to his pretend girlfriend.

Soon Cooper and Summer's pretend relationship escalates and the little white-lie grows to a big monster of a lie.

Summer was a bit shallow sometimes, but usually very good and an over controlling perfectionist, but when you read her background story, her behavior totally makes sense.

Cooper had a rough life growing up so he often carries a chip on his shoulder; he is a really hardworking good guy.

The story is sweet, especially when these two finally acknowledge they are in love. The story was originally published in 1996 and was re-released with a few updates. This is the perfect book for a relaxing, kickback afternoon or weekend.

Oooh. I quite liked this unexpected gem that I was gifted via audible in exchange for an honest review. The story, told in dual POV follows Summer Pettigrew, high society socialite and ad executive and, "tall dark and bad" bike mechanic Cooper Garrett (love the name so much). Summer needs a fake boyfriend, and fast, her best friend sends his cousin, Cooper to the rescue. Sooo not the fake boyfriend Summer was expecting. What was her friend thinking? Things turn from bad to worse quite quickly when Cooper ends up spending the night (quite innocently I might add), at Summer's condo, much to the chagrin of Summer's socialite church going grandma. However a relationship does ensue and things are looking up until Summer discovers the real truth behind her 'fiance', and what he has been hiding (in plain sight I might add) from her. I loved Cooper, a true alpha male and gentleman all rolled in to one. Summer however I did find to be a spoilt, selfish brat who couldn't see past her own issues. Overall, a light easy read.

Tall, Dark, and Bad....I really expected this to be a rougher biker story. I was happy to find a Romantic Comedy, of sorts. Summer is a successful advertising executive working for a well respected but old school Agency. She is too busy to bother with relationships. Cooper is an enigma through most of this book. He's deeper than she knows. . The author takes us along for the ride as we discover things about Cooper a bit at a time. I loved that. Grandmother bemoans her granddaughters lack of love interest, Summer lies, telling her she is seeing someone. Then she has to come up with a "boyfriend" on short notice when Grandmother invites them to dinner. I'll stop now as I don't want to spoil it. Good book, talented author equals a good reading experience. I look forward to more from Charlotte Hughes.

Summer had been raised by her grandma when her parents left her when she was just a baby and needed a fiance fast as summer lied to her grandma to put her mind at ease. Summer works with Warren and he agreed to the part but he got in a bad car accident so his cousin Cooper came instead. Summer is still a virgin but doesn’t feel the need for a man just a fake fiance. She doesn’t want to upset her grandmother who has a bad heart. Summer and Cooper end up with an engagement party. But Summer and Cooper are complete opposites. Cooper has a bad boy persona and rides a motorcycle and he also lies about his finances as he doesn’t feel he is good enough for Summer.
I really loved this story. It made me laugh there was some drama and some secrets and lies. But also romance. It was also well written and you couldn’t ask for more. I also loved the characters . Also all the ins and outs Summer and Cooper go through. I highly recommend.

Cooper just oozes naughtiness and danger, "he smiled; clearly he liked what he saw. "Sorry I'm late, babe," he said. "Trouble with my bike." He's such a smarta** as well, "my mistake," he said. "Next time I'll just slap you on the back and offer you a cold beer and a cigar." Sometimes a girl has to show her man how serious she is, "she smiled, slid closer, and started unbuttoning his shirt. "Does this answer your question?" Cooper he's an alpha man but the boy is a softie when it comes to his girl, "the truth is I sort of get turned on watching men look at you as long as they know up front you're mine. Just do me a favor and save the revealing stuff for the bedroom. Does that sound fair?" I liked this book and I loved Cooper.

This was a quick read. It was cute but preductable. Summer's grandmother has "heart problems". She is worried about Summer being all alone when she is gone. She pretty much guilts Summer into confessing that she is seeing someone. Of course she is not dating. We are introduced to Cooper, bad boy extrodinaire. Cooper has his own secrets. I can understand him not confessing to Summer. She did come off as a little bit of a snob. I thought her reaction to his secret was overdone, but it worked out for them. The first half of the book was good, but as I memtioned before, Summer's attitude was annoying. The characters were ok and I enjoyed most of the banter. It was ok.

Summer, to keep her grandmother happy tells her she's happily dating and about to walk down the aisle. Now, she has to manufacture Mr. Imaginary in time for her grandmother's dinner party. She asks her colleague, but at the last minute, his cousin, Cooper, takes his place. Summer, telling herself she can do without Mr. Sexy, tries to avoid the attraction at every turn. Cooper thinks Summer is a snob, but is too attracted to completely give up the charade.

This book had a lot of dry wit and humour, which I enjoyed. I first expected it to be darker, but was pleasantly surprised. I look forward to more of the author's work in the future.

This is too much and just enough all at the same time! I loved Cooper! I enjoyed watching the way Summer and Cooper responded to one another and grew to genuinely care about one another. Summer is a hardworking advertising executive who throws herself into her work so much that her personal life is nonexistent. Cooper is hardworking and handles his own business in the motorcycle industry. The two meet to pull off a charade of sorts and everything spirals from there.

The writing allows for the story to be easily taken in and the characters to be related to and liked. Tall, Dark, and Bad gets a solid 4.75 star rating from me! Cooper is swoons worthy, you've been warned.

Oh the tangled webs we weave. Summer spouted lie after lie to keep her grandmother happy. Cooper let people assume the worst about him, and when it was all said and done a romance formed. The story was very cute. Henrietta was a cute feisty little old lady who didnt make it easy on Summer to tell the truth. I liked the banter that Summer and Cooper shared. The only thing that held me back on giving it another star was the sex could have been hotter. It was pretty generic and that was a little disappointing.

I really didn't care for this book. I had to force myself to read it and at the end, I really wanted to delete it from my Kindle. I hated all the deception that Summer dragged Cooper into, even though his own deceptions were nothing to overlook either. In fact, much of the book had people deceiving most of the people around them, which I disliked. The romance between Summer and Cooper was half-baked, and I couldn't understand why it became a love match. It wasn't a complete waste, so I'm rounding my rating up a half star, but it really wasn't the book for me.

loved it!

This was a sweet Romance novel. Summer is like a Princess who worships her beloved grandmother Henrietta. When Henrietta has an angina attack she decides now is the time to bring Summer up to snuff and find love and get married so Summer asked a friend to help her out but when his hot biker cousin has to step in...all bets are off and what was once expedient suddenly takes an unexpected turn for everyone...

Violence: no violence
Language: some "PG" swears
Sex: adult situations and extremely explicit musings by the H, detailed kissing, detailed (and easily skipped) sex.
But, seriously, what did I expect? Look at the book cover! But, my, oh my, the Hero is Smokin' Hot. Like, writing this and thinking about him makes me a little dizzy. The thing is, I *really* liked the book. I'm going to buy my own and redact the sex parts.

Tall, Dark, and Bad is brilliantly fun and sexy!

This is my first book I have read by Charlotte Hughes and I cannot wait to read another! This book offers an awesome story with twist and turn that leave you laughing or down right frustrated as a big lie meant to only appease a sweet grand mother turns into a roller coaster of the best kind. Great characters, smart and fun banter and a solid story!

Funny, Witty, Emotional

This was a quick read, it flowed easily and moved quickly! The characters are well developed with real world problems and assumptions about others that I think resonate with every reader.

A steamy humorous romance that is perfect for something lighter while still forming connections. I really want more of Summer Aunt though. She is a hoot!

TALL, DARK, HANDSOME AND SEXY

Loved this book. Handsome biker and rich chick - what's not to love? It's amazing how one little lie can snowball. There's only one kind of erotic love scene, but not too over the top. I loved watching them fall in love, but lies do eventually catch up with you, don't they?

Overall, I really liked the book, but the beginning felt a little rushed. I like a little more build up between characters but in this case the attraction was combustably instantaneous. Once I got past the first few chapters, I became increasingly more interested and couldn't put the book down. I recommend it.

I got this book as a free download and I really enjoyed it. I do have to agree with other reviewers that there is Tall and Dark but really no Bad, but other than that it was very entertaining and a fun read. I like the characters and even though the storyline was a bit predictable it was still an enjoyable read, plus it was for free. I am sure it won't be my last book by this Author.
