I adored that this book centred around all the drama of a dysfunctional family. Ruth writes brilliant characters and you will LOVE to hate a couple of them. Peregrine is bad but Graham is even worse. You’ll be turning the pages to find out if anything happens to them but you’ll have to read it to find out if anything does! The setting provided the perfect forced proximity for all the drama to unfold. The twists were great and I loved the ending. This was more than just a psychological thriller with the brilliant exploration of family dynamics throughout. I’m so glad I picked this one up!

3.5 ⭐- The Family Break is shelved as a psychological thriller, but honestly this read far more like a dysfunctional family drama. The mystery elements felt secondary to all the emotional wreckage, at least until the final stretch.

There are a few twists and turns along the way, however none of these felt particularly clever or surprising to me. I think because I went into this thinking it was a thriller, I expected thrillery events to take place. However aside from a couple, non really did.

I enjoyed the overall concept of the story. It was fun learning about each member of the family & how different they were. Failing marriages, new beginnings, bullying & hierarchy all play a major part.

At certain points I thought the story was taking a paranormal twist, but this was hidden behind a quiet child’s poor communication skills.

I have to say, for most of the book, what kept me turning the page was to see what happened to Graham, the husband / son in law / weasel / sycophant brown nose! He was so obliviously entertaining! What a sad sack of a human. I actually started to feel a little sorry for the towards the end. The man is a walking red flag!

Would I recommend this book? If you like your family gatherings dysfunctional rather than nonstop suspense, then I think you’d really like this. Just go in expecting more "trapped with people you can't stand" rather than a scary thriller.

After reading roughly 250 domestic thrillers in the first year or two of my daughter's life 😅 I'm on a bit of a pause from the subgenre. No twists can surprise me and every book feels like something I've read before --

BUT I saw this on NetGalley and it said all the right things.😏 Luxury travel, mysteriously sponsored vacation, remote setting, relationship drama... alright, alright, I'm seduced.

Premise - an upscale travel agent, Allegra 🎶, gets a free stay at a new high-end woodland retreat for her extended family. When they get there, the spa treatments and fine dining quickly take a backseat to in-group tensions. Feeling taken for granted, Allegra bonds with someone new... da-da-da-duh.🦈

Okay, okay. I knew what would happen from right at the start, it was signposted SO obviously. I, however, believe a story doesn't need to surprise me to be good. Do I like to be surprised? Sure, but I care more that the twists are justified and they were here (even if they weren't quite twists as much as a logical progression of events).

I think I was supposed to like Allegra more than I did, but the only characters I ended up liking were Ben and Enzo (and maybe the little boy who saw the ghost, because lmao what an imagination).

I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Emer Heatley. She did a great job with the read! Her reading, alternating between conversational and dramatic as required, paired with a quick-paced story made this a great workout/errand listen.

When Allegra, a luxury travel agent, is offered a complimentary stay at a high-end woodland retreat, she is delighted. She invites her family to stay and with the beautiful setting and chance of relaxation, it should be perfect. But relationships between the family are strained and as resentments grow, they miss the warning signs that something more dangerous may be at play.

Having enjoyed the previous book I read by this author, I was looking forward to trying another. I’m glad I did, as this was another entertaining, fun story, however read more as a dysfunctional family drama than thriller. Even though this was more of a drama, I didn’t mind in this instance, as there was plenty of it and it made for an absorbing read.

My main enjoyment came from the characters, as some were so unlikeable, they were highly amusing and I loved to hate them. I did find the story fairly predictable, guessing where it would go. But even so, I still found myself invested in the majority of the story and think this was a well written book. I would certainly read more by this author. The Family Break is a tense psychological thriller that combines an idyllic woodland holiday setting with simmering family tensions. The secluded treehouse retreat creates an atmospheric backdrop and Ruth Irons does a great job building an unsettling sense of unease from the very beginning.

The novel shines in its exploration of complex family dynamics, with vivid descriptions and an addictive pace that kept me turning the pages. The isolated setting adds to the suspense, making it easy to feel immersed in the story.

While I enjoyed the gripping premise and the mounting tension, I found some aspects of the plot and character development less satisfying than I'd hoped, which prevented the ending from having its full emotional impact. Even so, it's an engaging read for fans of slow-burn psychological thrillers with a holiday-gone-wrong premise.

This was tense and interesting, though a bit predictable. The author did a good job of making it feel like a lifetime of frustrations and resentments were really about to hit a breaking point. The focus was more on the interpersonal family drama rather than being full of thrilling twists and turns; it was still entertaining, but if someone is looking for a Freida McFadden/Lisa Jewell/Alice Feeney style thriller this may not quite hit the same mark.

Overall the narration was great; the one downside was that the POV would occasionally switch mid-chapter, and though the narrator did a good job of changing her voice when this happened, it was still jarring each time and took me out of the story for a brief moment until I realized what had happened.

Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. Family holidays are supposed to be relaxing… this one definitely wasn’t! I was hooked watching all the family drama unfold while trying to work out who was hiding what. Every time I thought everyone had shown their true colours, something else came out that changed everything. The multiple POVs worked really well because everyone had their own secrets and version of events, which kept the story engaging from start to finish. It had a great mix of family drama, mystery and psychological suspense, with plenty of twists to keep things interesting all the way through. If you enjoy dysfunctional families, secrets and a holiday setting where nothing goes to plan, this is definitely worth picking up.

A woman receives a luxury vacation at a brand-new retreat and invites her extended family to join her. What begins as a dream getaway quickly turns into anything but relaxing as old family drama resurfaces in the remote setting.

The audiobook narration was easy to follow, and the multiple points of view kept the story engaging while adding depth to the family dynamics. I listened while running errands and poolside. I personally feel this is simply a cozy entertaining family drama escape.

This didn’t quite fit the thriller or mystery genre for me, it wasn’t thrilling or shocking, it felt more like a drama.
So, as a drama, I enjoyed it, with its web of family tension, and some characters who really got on my nerves, but in a way that added to the story. It was a bit slow paced, and the mystery element needed more. There was something about the writing style that I struggled with at times, I felt like it jumped person perspective within a chapter.

Loved The Family Break. It's a tense, unsettling, pacy thriller, set in a holiday resort, where family tensions reach breaking point, with deadly consequences. Really enjoyed the twists and turns, the cleverly handled suspense, vivid descriptions and red herrings. I didn't guess the ending! Highly recommend a read.
