Josie Jackson has been thrown back to the era of the Mongol Empire by Carter, the mastermind behind her trip to the Old West. Soon after arriving, she’s discovered by Carter’s enemies. They sever her connection to her handler, leaving her no choice but to obey them – or risk never making it home.
She completes the mission they assign her, only to have her hope of seeing her family and time again crushed. Her new handlers have stranded her in the past - alone, friendless and with no empathic memory chip to help her navigate the dangerous politics of an Empire at war.
When a Mongol warrior named Batu becomes her protector and guide, she can't decide if she's better off with him or alone. Strong, brave, loyal and quick to both laugh and kill, Batu and his world initially baffle her. With nowhere else to turn and no other option, Josie takes a chance to find happiness in the beautiful yet dangerous steppes of thirteenth century Mongolia.

This is not the best book I've read by any means. Sometimes it's spotty, didn't make sense, or just ridiculous at best but it kept me thoroughly entertained.
I assumed that Josie would still be reeling from the pain of losing Taylor, and though she did, it wasn't in the way that I thought. It wasn't heartbreak but guilt. She really wasn't in love with him. She adored Taylor but she loved Batu.
I will admit to not seeing the romance blossoming between Josie and Batu early on though when I caught on I couldn't deny the chemistry and the tenderness between the two. Batu's big bad brute vibes is in massive contrast to his witty and playful attitude towards Josie and that in turn brings out her playful side which, until now, only exists in her head because it's not time-appropriate to voice them out. I adored the teasing and jesting between the two.
what worked for me — 1. unexpected twists and turns; 2. humor and banter; 3. action-filled; 4. romance.
what didn't work for me — 1. freaking CARTER; 2. time-jump stuff lost me.
Also Josie, what about using protection? exercising precaution? You are immune to every disease in God's green Earth but not pregnancy! How about STD? What then?!
I always like the adventure aspect of this book and how it centered on just Josie. I'm excited about the Vikings era jump. However, I found out that South which was originally planned for July 2017 has not been released to this day. I don't want to wait for longer so I will not be reading North just yet.
I mean, I figured when I saw there were two more books planned for this series (North and South) that things couldn't just end on a HEA note. But, COME. ON.
I feel like a lot of people might dislike this book because, unlike with West, here it's mostly Josie and Batu for a major chunk of it, and it's travelling, but at the same time, I loved it. I was also growing accustomed to what Josie had to accept and it actually didn't sound too bad to me because, well, Batu.
But then Carter happened.
Again.
I'm torn between whether or not it would have been better for her to wait for Batu and tell him what Carter told her, or applauding her for having the strength to do what she did. It's like ... OHMERGAWDIWANTOPUNCHYOU.
Seriously.
Now we're off to Viking land. And since I'm just off the season 2 high of Vikings, well, I kind of like the idea of that.
I still feel heartbroken, but I'm beginning to think it might be a given in these books lol.
If I've said it once, I'll still say it again, and that is Lizzy is going to drive me crazy with this series. I barely held it together with what happened to Taylor, so am glad this one did not end in a similar way, but I also have to wait a year before the next book.
I can't say that I loved this one more than the first one, cause to be honest, I'm not sure what Josie was supposed to accomplish or perhaps that is just it...Carter got thwarted so she didn't set out to do what he wanted. Instead, this one was quite different from the first which I admit did make it interesting in its own way. Having gone back 1,000 years or so, the portrayal of what life back then was like was both brutal and liberating. Women had more authority, but death and killing was a way of life too.
I wasn't too surprised to learn Batu's history; a part of me suspected, but it took awhile. There is a part of me that wonders how this girl is going to survive. She has no real skills. It is actually a miracle she lasted this long and that has more to do with the fact that the main men in her life fall for her. That someone is always looking out for her. Maybe that is why I'm one step away from loving this series. I really enjoy the storyline and the glimpses into the past, but although I like Josie a lot, I want more from her too. Yep, got some big expectations here people.
The Carter situation is the biggest mystery. Trust him or not? What is he really hoping to accomplish and who is he to Josie? For some reason, my instincts are telling me that there is a link between the two, but I'll have to watch as the story unfolds to understand what that is. All I know is that I am still seeing the good in Carter, even when Josie is about ready to give up on him.
Bottom line, I don't watch Dr. Who, but I may have to take a peak into that. The idea of time travel is both scary, but exciting too. One of my favorite series was the Outlander series. I don't know how I would survive if I was stuck in the past, but have to admit a part of me would like to be able to experience what it was like then too.
Lizzy Ford, author extraordinaire, is an evil mastermind. She knows exactly how to weave a suspenseful tale and how much to give the reader before taking it away, enough to break your heart and enough to make you demand to know how Josie's story ends.
Written in the first person, from the perspective of Josie, we feel everything that this lovable and sensitive (but not too sensitive) characters as she's torn from the world she knows and finds herself lost in time and in Mongolia, on this occasion.
Still reeling from the upheavals that beset her in the first book, she has to find herself a place in this new world. What makes this so engaging to read/listen to is that she's developing as a character and Ford takes a deep dive into her psyche to really explore how being so lost and confused would feel when you're a naturally warm and empathetic person. This is why the author is an evil mastermind.
I'm impressed by the scope of the author's writing, she's successfully gone from the wild West to the Mongolian empire without breaking her stride - writing outside your own culture can be a minefield but in this case, I think it's perfectly done.
The book follows the journey of Josie and Batu to the steppes, their interactions are fascinating as they bond despite being such different people. There's nothing rushed in the writing style and I was hooked.
Not only does every fan of time travel, fantasy and romance need to read this book, they need to do so in the audio format. I think that Lillian Yves' has outdone herself with this particular title - she turns Josie into a real and breathing person for you, which makes this story all the more breathtaking. As a first person perspective, I think it's essential to pick the right voice artist for the role and this was a match made in heaven.
Wow, just wow. If you thought West was gripping, wait till you get your hands on this one! Josie has been sent to the Mongol era and needless to say, things are going rather unexpectedly. First, Carter puts her in cryostasis and when she wakes up, she has no idea where she is. She doesn't know who to trust around her and with her emphatic memory chip broken, she knows nothing about the era. As she struggles to fit in, Josie struggles to understand the importance of her presence and whether she will pine for home forever or accept her circumstances and do her best to fit in. The author has written an extremely gripping tale that left me constantly wanting to pick up the book to continue reading. Josie plight is mesmerizing and her adventures left me spell-bound. I have just absolutely got to know what will happen to her next in North. I hope certain characters from East beyond just Josie also make their way into the rest of the series. Like Josie, I have got to know what is Carter's end goal for Josie.
After West I anxiously awaited this one- We were left wondering what would become of Josie. If you thought Wesr was good- It has nothing on East. This time Josie finds herself in the Kahn Era. In a world filled with strange customs and ways, she must find a way to fit in. When some stuff goes down she finds herself trapped with no where to go and no one to turn to. Josie is unsure of her mission here and doesn't trust anyone around her. Becoming frustrated and feeling like she don't belong, she tries and tries to figure out her purpose, her way to be useful. We meet some very interesting characters and the story kept me entranced. Batu is a great honorable warrior, who's sole purpose is to protect the goddess Moonbeam. He is strong and a little goofy- but honest to a fault and I fell in love with him. This series is filled with mystery and suspense- great characters and interesting times and places. If you are looking for a journey, you will find it in this series. Canot wait for North!!
WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? If you read West then you will want to read this book but you will not see what is coming. This was an amazing book BUT Lizzy Ford sure knows how to get us to come back for more. This book starts off where West ended and boy does it take you on a roller cost. SO not only does Josie get sent back in time to the Mongol era but she also gets put in cryostasis. When she wakes up she has no idea where she is much less when. Not only that but she has no idea who to trust or what she is "suppose" to be doing there. As the story moves along we get to see more of Josie's character and we get pulled on an emotional ride with her. I read this book in one sitting and loved it! The ending left me with so many questions and I hope that Lizzy Ford brings some of the characters from East into the next novel North. I want to know Carter's endgame and what is going to happen to Josie in the end. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was given and advance copy for an honest opinion.
I have to say that author Lizzy Ford has by far the greatest imagination I have ever encountered.
Josie is thrown now years back into the age of the Mongolians, I don't know how this poor girl is going to end up and if she will ever get her HEA. But I am glad that Batu has been thrown into the picture cause he to can travel in time. I'm still trying to piece together where Carter fits into Josie's life, but I guess that will remain a mystery until the next books come out, Ohhh in a year???? I'm only wondering what North and South has in store for her.
Awesome time travel adventure Lizzy Ford never ceases to amaze me looking forward to the next book!
This was an amazing book, that I could not put down until I finished the very last page. It picks up right where the first book, West leaves off. It moves along at a great speed, has amazing characters that you feel like you know personally and a story that you cannot put down until you finish the book and then you are craving more. This has got to be read, you will not be sorry that you did.
I got this audio for free. I enjoyed the story just as much as I did when I originally read it. I thought the narrator, Lillian Yves, was very good and made the perfect Josie.
I liked the change up from the first book, because Josie really needed this time to heal and sort through her emotions and guilt from Book 1. After the initial bloodbath, her time in the Mongol Empire was a kind of respite. Also as much as I loved book 1, I need a break from really scary skeletons and the horror. Sure, this was still violent, but it wasn't as personal and thus didn't affect me that much.
In the first book, it irritated me a bit of her not loving Taylor, but it made sense considering they had just met and I don't think we're the perfect match. Also, Josie was like I think I could come to love Taylor... I think there are a few men one could come to love, but there will always be one who is the best for you and is your one, like Batu was for her. I also liked how the love-making was different here. All these books have one major sex scene towards the end of the novel you gotta wait for; I wonder if the third novel will as well. I wish she had told Batu she needed to leave; I don't want him thinking she betrayed him and lied. Though maybe if she told him, it would be even harder for her to leave cuz two people in love wouldn't want to give each other up.
*Spoiler alert*: I'm assuming she's pregnant with Batu's baby (aww cute) by the end of the novel. Even though the thing with Batu is sad, I'm excited for the Vikings time..and hopefully another romance with a hot Viking (cross my fingers bc she was even less willing to emotionally attach in this time). Though with Batu's baby, that would be less hot and romantic...
In the next and final novel, we need finally learn Carter's motivations...like why 1) he wanted to uncreate Taylor??! that was so weird, 2) have her go to the Mongol Empire .......................... The author better come up with a good explanation.
I enjoyed going along Josie on her next journey, this time to Mongolia in the 13th century. She is a survivor, that's for sure and doing her best to find her footing in the unfamiliar barbarian society. So many twists, situations where I was scared, elated or sad along with her. But yet again just as she makes peace with her lot and finds love again, it is crushed and taken away from her. My heart was hurting as she left Batu behind to give him a chance to survival and was chanting along her the message to Carter I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU! I hope he gets what is coming to him. The story is engaging and I cannot help wanting more. Going NORTH next ;) - 4 stars
Ms. Yves did a way better job on this story, I like the improvements from the last story. Her voices are versatile and much better used. The slight variation of Josie's voice from previous story is reflective of her situation in this time and place. Enjoyable listening experience. Looking forward to the next one. - 4 stars
Well that was a rollercoaster. Josie has left the old West and been dumped into the Mongol Empire. Feeling out of place there was nothing compared to here. She has no idea who to trust or what she’s supposed to do, desperate for home but with no way to return, she doesn’t know what to do or who to trust, definitely not Batu the warrior she meets ‘imprisoned’ in a dungeon. Told from the first person Lizzy again makes us feel what she feels, weaves a dizzying tale of a woman out of time. But this time, she’s a little stronger and a little more determined not to let circumstances drag her down.
I’m a huge Lizzy fan, but Josie annoyed me a little in the first book, in this one she’s grown and won me over, I literally couldn’t put it down. The ending though Lizzy WHY?!! I know there are 4 books but the stress! I need the rest immediately, please and thank you!
This is the first I've read/listened to in the series, so both author and narrator were new to me. All I can say is, WOW!! I read up on the first book in the series, West, so that I'd have an idea of what I was getting into, since I hadn't yet listened to it. With that said, I had a decent understanding of the premise of the story, and how Josie got from Tombstone to 1840's Indian territory to 13th century Mongolia. Very well written story, it drew me in and I was captivated the entire time. I think Lizzy is a great writer, and I loved Lillian's narration, great job. I definitely want MORE! Recommended, it has it all - time travel, romance, a little scary in there, suspense, action... loved it! I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I listened to the audible version of the story and I have mixed feelings about this series. There are things I like and dislike about the story. I love the characters although there are times when Josie works on my nerves. I do love the playfulness between her and Batu. Batu is funny, sweet and protective. However, I'm ready for Carter to reveal what his real motives are with Josie. I'm tired of him throwing her from one place to another. As soon as she finds love and I'm happy with how things are going she has to leave and go somewhere else and the journey begins again. I'm ready for this series to end. It's a good story and the narrator has done a fantastic job but I'm ready for Josie to either find her HEA. I really want her to go home and find one of the time travels in her present time that she shared a past with.
I really never expected the final twist in this story. It totally threw me! The story itself is engrossingly brilliant and a 'page-turner' of note. Lizzy Ford certainly knows how to spin a tail and she does so in an easy and well plotted way with well thought out characters who come to life in the telling of this story. Lillian Yves, the narrator, enhances it with her interesting rendition of 'East' and I loved the effortless voice changes that identify each character. This is the second book in the series and I am very happy to recommend it as and exciting and entertaining stand-alone that held my attention and kept me entertained throughout. I listened to an audiobook supplied by the narrator and this is my voluntary and unbiased review of it.
East is the second book in the History Interrupted series by Lizzy Ford, and that series title takes on a whole new meaning in this book. Josie is finally where she feels like she knows who she is and where she belongs. She has given up on returning home and opened her heart to a new home and a new family...but then the lives unravel. This is a book of many strong characters, where honor is the word of the day. Very well done, but no HEA yet.
I liked this book, start to finish. Heartbreaking and heartwarming at once. A lot of adventure, a lot of questions, a lot of passion...and, surprise!
Like Josie, I really can't help but hate Carter. Thrust in situations she has no control over. Learning to live and trust, just to be yanked out at the worst possible moments. The big question, what is it all for?
The narrator is pretty perfect for this series, she does a great job of bringing the story to vivid life.
This was amazing. The relationship between Batu and Josie was beautiful. I loved how the story developed and how Josie changed after West and during East. This story was beautiful but the ending sucked. Why would Carter split them up.
Josie is very relatable to me, I would so freak out and not be able to cope with the circumstances she finds herself in. Carter is a total bad guy who you hope doesn't win the game he is playing. Can't wait to read book 3 !!!
I thought the first book in this series was pretty good. Then I read the second one. And I cried and got mad and fell in love with Batu and cried some more and laughed. Wonderful love story and I liked the way Josie developed as a person and grew. On to read North now....can't wait.
"I've been an emotional mess..", yup that's you Josie. That's why we like you. Batu, you are strong, funny, and no nonsense. Easily my favorite character from this series so far. He was a great contrast with Josie and I enjoyed their back and forth throughout the book. A must read.
Carter….whoever you are….I am warning you!!!! grrrrr…… . I am emotional writing this review. Have you ever read a book where you can “feel” the love between two characters? I am not talking just “reading” I mean “feeling” it?? I absolutely love this author…(maybe bit of a stalker lol) but I swear ...she will kill me with this series. This story is about Moonbeam aka...Josie. YOU must read book one……..so go no further here!!!!!
Josie…...poor Josie. I like the name Moonbeam much better. Josie survives till the next adventure, *not so sure about me though. Anyway, we meet Batu in this journey. I love him. I adore him. He makes me laugh. Batu her guardian, he will protect her with his life. He is an honorable guardian who will kill anyone who hurts her. I don’t want to spoil anything here. So all I will say is, well written!! no GREAT!! Like book one you will not be disappointed. Couldn't put this one down either!! We are thrust into the era of Mongols!!! **inserts music da da don ….. …** This era is well…...barbaric as Josie would say. It’s hard living here, and she is having a hard time adapting here unlike the Old West. She must learn how to survive. She needs to learn a skill and she feels the guilt of what happened to Taylor. She feels responsible. How many times will she have to sacrifice her happiness? Will she ever forgive herself for Taylor? Can she survive? Will she survive? Will you survive?? And now Ladies and gents…..we wait patiently……. *I was given an ARC for an honest review.
East begins where West left off, with Josie waking up in another time and place and having to feel her way around. The book is interesting, fairly fast-paced, with an intriguing time travel plot.
Josie is determined to do things differently this time around and not become attached to the people she meets. She wants to do the task that her puppet-master, Carter, has for her and continue to move on in hopes of returning to her real life. Despite this intention, I think she ends up doing the same things - getting attached and listening to Carter despite his treachery. She meets Batu, her protector, and through the trials of navigating this new world, she comes to care for him and his people. Batu is a wonderful character who takes the world as it comes and is very much at peace with who he is.
Josie, on the other hand, is impetuous and a bit wild. Her emotions seem all over the map and sometimes not very fitting for the situation. She claims to mourn those we meet in West, but I don't really feel that from her. She continues to listen to Carter despite the havoc he has caused and she doesn't fight for what she wants. She doesn't stand behind her decisions and it is for this that I am a bit ambivalent towards her.
I'm not sure where Lizzy Ford is going with this and I'm nervous. I want Josie to have a happily-ever-after not go from one guy to another throughout history.
So, if this were a standalone with a different ending, I would have loved it. However, that is not the case so I can only say that I liked it.
What the freaking hell?????? Come on Lizzy, so not cool. I really liked West but I loved East more. I love the character Josie is turning into. I hate Carter even more then the first book. I pretty much feel the same hate Josie says. Needless to say I knew this book was not going to end happy because there are two more books probably in two different eras. Lizzy is a genius in putting time travel in her books. The way she takes modern times and jokes about it during the book is too funny. I loved the added character Batu. Though I did not see that twist coming. I thought maybe but I wasn't sure. I really hope this series ends with a happy ending and all this mystery about Carter and what her tasks are is pissing me off. Just tell us the plan Carter not stupid secrets. The story flowed well and had both suspense and emotion. I liked that it was mainly these two characters for the most part. The tribe and minor characters were a nice touch and added greatly to the story. I would love to see Batu's point of view especially at the end there. I know it adds mystery when it is just Josie's point of view but seeing other characters would be nice just so that we can get in on what is really happening but I guess that is also part as to why I keep reading because I have to know what is going to happen. I highly recommend this book as well as this author.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
