Untamed Flame: Cold Authority

Rate this book
The Dragon King’s oldest daughter is a certified genius. Emmy left for an Ivy League college at fourteen and published groundbreaking research at sixteen, but she wasn’t happy with the tedium of being the smartest person in the room.

To cure her terminal boredom, she’s burned through her trust fund allotments, borrowed a ridiculously expensive supercar, and slept her way through most of the planet’s top colleges — and been kicked out of every single one because she enjoys playing with the boytoys a little too… publicly.

Her parents are done with her costly whims, and they’ve exiled her to frozen Alaska and cut off her trust fund payments. She’s enrolled in a run-of-the-mill college and bound by a contract that threatens truly dire consequences for breaking the rules.

Emmy is prepared to hate every icy second of it, but she’s completely unprepared for the vampire tasked with keeping her in line. Cold, disciplined, and immortally powerful, he’s the one man she can’t seduce, can’t stop wanting, and can never have. Like her, he’s an apex predator who will never submit.

In a sunless, decadent playground where vampires reign and submission is currency, Emmy learns that fire doesn’t just destroy; it also forges. Caught between a lethal ancient poison and two men who refuse to let her go, can she survive the flames and the ice intact?

Cold Authority is the first book in the Untamed Flame trilogy — a binge-worthy paranormal romance featuring a dragon shifter heroine. Perfect for readers who crave slow-burn romantacy with power exchange, forced proximity in a decadent supernatural world of masked balls and orgiastic frenzies, a genius but bratty heroine cut off from her trust fund and bound by contracted servitude leading to a redemption arc, grumpy/sunshine dynamics, found family, poisoning and life-threatening danger, a healing journey with emotional intimacy, protective and caretaker heroes, telepathic bonds, a triangle relationship that defies the rules, and open-door spicy scenes with bisexual characters and reverse harem vibes. Cliffhanger ending in book one, but a guaranteed HEA in book three.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Candace Blevins writes urban fantasy, paranormal romance, epic fantasy contemporary BDSM romance, and two kick-ass motorcycle club series. She’s published more than fifty books. Candace lives with her husband of twenty-four years and their two teenaged daughters. The family’s beloved, goofy, retired racing greyhounds are usually at her side as she writes, quietly keeping her company. Or sometimes not so quietly.

Her urban fantasy series, Only Human, gives us a world where weredragons, werewolves, werelions, three different species of vampires, and a variety of other mythological beings exist.

Candace's various paranormal romance series are all sister series to the Only Human series, and give some secondary characters their happily ever after.

Her Dark(ish) Faerie Tale series gives us a close-up and personal look at Queen Mab, and her Dark Underbelly series is, as you’d expect, dark and (if you’re a little twisted) oh-so-yummy.

Her contemporary Safeword series gives us characters who happen to have some extreme kinks. Relationships can be difficult enough without throwing power exchange into the mix, and her books show characters who care enough about each other to fight to make the relationship work. Each couple in the Safeword series gives the reader a different take on the lifestyle.

A coming of age book always catches my attention. When it is a trilogy with vampires, dragons, and shifters - oh my. This trilogy is focused on Emmy, Aaron Drake's eldest daughter. Aaron went a bit wild and believes it is cheaper by the dozen which is why Emmy has so many siblings. Emmy as the oldest and heir to the throne is placed under a lot of pressure by her parents. When under pressure, there must be a release . . . For Emmy, her choice of release is frowned upon, because she is female. I went into this first book expecting a lazy diva - spoiled and bratty. To my pleasant surprise, Emmy is none of those.

An explosive and challenging coming of age

What to expect:
-Second generation story (daughter of the Dragon King)
-Financial coercion
-Sexual indenture, objectification, commodification
-Genius female lead
-Vivid foodie descriptions, detailed world building, visceral descriptions
-Consensual and non-consensual encounters
-Yearning\lusting from afar and a non-monogamous journey to HEA
-Strong character growth
-Mild cliffhanger

I was excited to read this ARC because I was so curious to see the continuation of the second-generation stories in this world. Candace Blevins continues the saga here, having already covered Lauren’s story (daughter of Kristen from the Only Human series), she is now developing Emmy’s journey, the daughter of the Dragon King Aaron and the Swan Queen Sophia. This book is perfectly on brand for the author, delivering a dark mix of BDSM, sexual indenture, threesomes, shapeshifters, and vampires, genius female lead, vivid descriptions.

I enjoy this author because she makes me feel things, her books are thought-provoking, challenge my perspective and my morals boundaries. This particular story was complex, and I found myself conflicted. However, I appreciated that other characters in the book shared that conflict, and even address some of my own hangups.

This book is darker than expected. The triggering incident, Emmy being kicked out of yet another Ivy League school for "too much public (consensual) sex", struck a nerve. I couldn't help but notice the drastic contrast to the real world, where rich young men often have their sexual misconduct or rape culture tendencies swept under the rug by these same respectable institutions to protect their bright futures, often with the help of their powerful fathers. Even in this story, the men participating in these public acts with her seem to face no consequences, only Emmy is cast out.

Regarding the fathers, Emmy's father’s decision for punishment was drastic and ironic. Revoking her trust fund to financially coerce her into sexual indenture under his best friend’s ownership made it hard for me to reconcile the doting father with this brutal king persona. For me it felt like bad parenting to raise a spoiled child and then be disappointed by her wild brat behavior. However, it is aligned with his ruthless Dragon King persona established especially in Dementor. I was unsettled by how she was forced to calculate her financial situation and accept abusing sexual encounters for money, only to regret them afterward.

What truly shines here is the author’s descriptive power. She is clearly a foodie, the food descriptions are incredibly vivid and mouthwatering. In fact, all the world-building is so detailed that you feel like you are standing in the room. This makes the spice scenes intense, but also makes the descriptions of violence and disease a visceral read. Despite the dark circumstances, Emmy has a fantastic character arc. She is likable and truly proves her maturity by the end.

I recommend this book to fans of dark romance, bdsm, readers who don't mind a non monogamous journey to HEA.

One of my favorite things about Candace’s books are that they are all in the same universe. I love when an author builds a world and characters that you can revisit over again and again in new books.

This books is about Emmy this first born of The dragon king and swan queen. We met Emmy when she was just a precocious toddler. Well now she is all grown up and has gotten into some trouble. I loved how the book takes you through her rebellious teenage years and early 20’s and now she needs to mature.

She of course interacts with some of my favorites of all time. Zander (Abbott) and Spencer. Seeing how they are doing in Alaska along with the rest of the flock and of course we see Kendra again was great!

Emmy matures throughout the book and falls in love. It’s amazing to see her progression over the book from spoiled kid to understanding and maturing adult.
She really steps up when there is danger and watching her figure it out was great.

Of course the love story and sexy scenes are top notch as always and I cannot wait for book two now that she has found her loves to see their relationship mature and to see how her parents react!

Watching Zander and Spence fall in love was precious. Seeing how much Zander has changed from
Being in Chattanooga and how Spencer has matured into such a care taker from their book was really special and just another reason why I love this universe so much!

This story immediately pulls you into a world that feels both dangerous and intoxicating. Emmy is such a fascinating character, brilliant, reckless, and unapologetically wild in a way that makes her impossible to ignore. I loved how her intelligence doesn’t make her predictable; instead, it adds another layer to her defiance and restlessness.

The contrast between her fiery, impulsive nature and the cold, controlled presence of the vampire watching over her creates a really compelling tension. Their dynamic is charged, not just with attraction, but with power, resistance, and restraint, and that push and pull is what kept me hooked.

The setting adds so much to the atmosphere as well. The icy isolation of Alaska paired with this hidden, decadent vampire society creates a backdrop that feels both eerie and seductive. There’s a strong sense that beneath all the glamour and control, something dangerous is always simmering.

What stood out to me most is the underlying theme of transformation. Emmy’s journey doesn’t feel like a simple rebellion, it feels like she’s being forced to confront herself in ways she’s always avoided. There’s a sense that the “fire” in her isn’t just destructive, but something that could reshape her entirely.

Overall, this feels like the start of a bold, intense, and emotionally charged story. If you enjoy powerful characters, slow-burning tension, and a world where danger and desire are constantly intertwined, this is definitely one to watch.

I was never more excited to read a second generation than this one, Emmy is the Dragon King’s daughter and if you haven’t read that story, go do it!

Emmy just wants to be her own person and doing all she can to get that young person experience. But after getting kicked out of so many schools, her parents have had enough, so they cut her off and sends her to his best friend Zander (aka Abbott), where she is basically indentured and has to work (in many different ways) for money, something she’d not had to do before and she’s doing all of this consensually.

I really enjoyed the new characters we got to meet like Felix, Toby and Rhea, but also some we’ve already read about Zander and Spence.

Candace writes so vividly, you can place yourself there and feel, see and taste as she describes Emmy’s new surroundings. Emmy is such a great character, she is full of life and wild and unpredictable and you can see how much she changes from the beginning of the book. She makes no excuses, she very much enjoys getting and giving pleasure (or pain) and that’s another part that Candace does so well, the darker themes are just amazingly described.

I can’t wait to read the next story, this is just the first part of a trilogy, with someone like Emmy I know we’ll get so much more especially now that Zander has made his feelings known.

Emmy has found herself financially cut off and contracted to Zander's flock in Alaska. Can she use this opportunity to complete her degree and begin the life she wants?

Untamed Flame Cold Authority is first in the trilogy by Candace Blevins showing Emmy all grown up. I will start be saying it does end on a cliffhanger and the author is clear on that fact so if it bothers you wait. Having said that, this book is full of sexual romps without emotional connection. Emmy is a sensual and sexual being who has struggled up to this point to meet her growing needs even as she gets a better understanding of what they are. I didn't realize until halfway through that along with Zander I needed time to see Emmy as a grown woman and not the precocious child we have seen. I needed time to see her as something more than a spoiled woman who comes off as a bit entitled. Not that she wasn't in some ways but not in anyway that was rotten. I enjoyed seeing her interact with people who know her now and are seeing her through an entirely different lens. I wasn't expecting where Ms. Blevins took us and while I am a bit unsure I like it I must admit I am intrigued and cannot wait to see where she is going. I cannot wait for the next installment of Emmy's journey.

A unique story. Emily a dragon princess, who is a genius that had her trust fund taken away. She is sent to Anchorage Alaska to a college that has consquences for breaking the rules. The master of the school is Zander, who was once her neighbour while she was growing up. She is food for vampires and her sexual appetite is fulfilled during the feeding that she gets paid for. She decides to go to Mordnik which will be a sexual frenzy with vampires paying millions to attend. It is a different way to gain money, but the shifters will be put in danger as different species become sick. When Emily becomes ill, Zander will place her in his suite while he is looking for who is responsible. This book is full of drama, danger, tangled emotions and ends with a cliffhanger. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next.

There is something wonderful about being with a female character, confident in who and how she is, but also knowing she still has some things to figure out! Emmy was amazing, a great mix of self-assured, sultry, and curiosity. She is fearless, not reckless; She is caring, not smothering; She is assertive, not dominant. She is truly on her own for the first time in her life, and learning things she didn’t realize she wanted to know about herself. Like most things she does, she forges forward, taking what life gives her, and bending either it to her will, or her will to it. Cannot wait to see what we get to see of her in the next book <3

I literally couldn’t put this book down! Once again Candace has written another phenomenal Paranormal romance that will knock your socks off. I got so drawn into this story and loved the story line and character build that I tear up when it ends and I have to wait for more. I just love Emmy’s character and still getting to know more about the ones I’ve known and being introduced to knew once is just a delight that touches my soul. Wonderfully talented and expertly crafted word smith that I will always want to read. Five stars isn’t enough but will have to do. Trust me you want to read this book! I received this eARC copy of this book and gladly give it this honest review.

Emmy Drake is a girl who just wants to have fun. Unfortunately, her idea of fun doesn't exactly fit into societal norms. She's brilliant but wastng her talents. Finally, her parents are fed up so she's cut off from her trust fund and banished to Alaska. As usual, Candace Blevins interweaves new characters with old favorites and details life in a vampire coterie. It's harsh, gritty, brutal and savage at times. But it also fulfills Emmy's needs and desires. She makes new friends, puts her background and education to work during a crisis and stops living in the "now" and starts to imagine her future. That includes falling in love wth not one but two men who've played a big role in her life.

3.5 stars. I think if you like this author or books where spice is the plot, then you will like this book. However, for me, this had so much spice, and so little character depth and growth that I felt disconnected. The MMC was mostly missing from the book, and then suddenly, there is this electric attraction. Also, I would of loved more moments to understand each character, their reasons for their motives, but the moments these subjects were touched on were brushed over quickly. In saying that, this isn't a bad book, just not for me.

Finally

She was the cutest lil dragon princess that was ever seen. She was spoiled and headstrong. Abbott found her when she ran away and answered her questions when she was inquisitive and hungry for knowledge. But as she grew older and matured into a beautiful and intelligent young woman Zander felt something special as he watched her or anytime he was around her. So glad to see their relationship growing.

Emmy may be a genius but she still wants to experience life and have some fun. Well she’s had her fun and now the folks have shut her down and banished her to Alaska where she’ll have rules and consequences and no trust fund to fall back on.
This story sucked me in and kept me riveted to Emmy’s tale. I can’t wait to see where the next installment will take us.

back with a bang

I took a break from this author after I finished the series and spin off and coming back was better than expected. I couldn’t put this book down from start to finish and will continue to gorge, probably going back to read again later. It’s really cool to see characters I knew now fully grown.
