SHE NEVER THOUGHT ANYTHING COULD BE A LIE. NOW, EVERYTHING IS.
Alyana lives with a hole where her memories should be since the day her world collapsed—found surrounded by blood, haunted by questions she cannot answer, and unable to remember what happened.
Five years later, a strange mark blooms across her skin. In a realm that has erased all trace of magic, her mark could expose secrets the Empire has buried for millennia.
When she’s attacked and forced to flee on the eve of her sister’s royal wedding, she joins a mysterious stranger bearing a mark like her own. He promises to help her find the truth, if she helps him hunt a creature said to hold the key to stopping the corrupt power spreading across the kingdoms.
Their path will lead them beyond the Empire’s borders, across the sea to forbidden lands where the old magic still breathes, and where the lies of the Empire began.
But the truth she seeks could shatter more than kingdoms—it may destroy Alyana herself.
Laura Collin is a French author. She writes dark romantic fantasy. Her story is built on grief and secrets, set in richly layered worlds with invented species, multiple magic systems, and horror-inspired creatures that crawl straight from the Seven Hells. She writes about embracing your own darkness, finding hope in despair, and the messy, complicated nature of love and survival.
She drafts her books side by side with her furry baby, Sheldon the grumpy black cat—her guardian—while drinking tea or coffee all day long.
The opening sentence to The Last Guardian (my preread quote) immediately grabbed my attention, and after finishing I appreciated it even more. It’s a sentence I spent the whole book pondering and it wasn’t until the end that I felt its full impact.
Alyana is a princess on a continent where magic is mistrusted, outlawed by the Empire and accessible only to the High Mages, used as protection from those with magic across the sea. She has concealed a mysterious mark on her wrist for 5 years, not sure who to trust with a potentially damning secret. Shortly before her sister’s wedding she is brutally attacked and forced to flee with a man of questionable reputation.
For me this story is strongest in the delivery of the plot and world building. It wouldn’t be a true fantasy without historical lies to be uncovered and political schemes to be revealed. I feel like the execution of unraveling a complex world, magic system and a large cast of characters is well paced and thoughtful.
I generally love a world where those with magic and those without are at odds, always curious about how the power dynamics play out, especially when magic is forbidden. I also love the themes of light vs dark and how there’s not a clear preference for one, but an acknowledgment that balance is needed.
“…peace is not found in light nor in darkness, but in the acceptance that neither side will ever prevail.”
The areas where I struggled the most to connect with this story include the dialogue and the dynamic between the MC’s Alyana and Zaid. Personally I feel like the dialogue feels a bit forced and even slightly juvenile at times. This is a debut, and I would hazard a guess from my general reading that naturally flowing dialogue is tricky to master. English is a second language for this author, so that may also be a contributing factor.
The relationship between the MC’s adheres to a pattern I personally find grating, although I think from reading reviews that this won’t bother all readers. So take this with a grain of salt. Alyana is closed off due to past trauma and she is forced to confront the fact that she has been lied to by many people, so she is naturally distrustful of being reliant on Zaid and his allies. However, these two engage in a near constant dance where she says something angry, he smirks, and then says something to provoke her even more. I don’t particularly enjoy this type of banter and it feels somewhat prolonged before transitioning almost too quickly into an admission of attraction and desire.
Overall the way this story wrapped up helped counteract some of my earlier frustrations. The MC’s interactions are softer and filled with more yearning than antagonism. The mysteries are revealed in a way that feels suspenseful and well timed. The cliffhanger paves the way for intriguing possibilities to come in the series.

Thank you to Laura Collin for the eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
——————————- “Today marked the fifth anniversary of my death.”
This was a solid fantasy read. The writing style made it really easy to quickly read this book even though there were a lot of complex elements that made up this fictional world. I was completely captivated by the world building and the magic system and I loved how everything was described throughout the story. This made it easy to visualize the world and feel transported there.
I appreciated how the FMC navigated trauma and was able to rediscover herself as the story progressed. It was interesting to see how her past played a part in how she handled everything on this adventure.
There was also a great cast of supporting characters that I hope to see more from in the future. I loved Alyana’s relationship with her siblings and how it was tied into the story. They had such great banter and this was a relatable aspect of the story for me.
Perfect for fans of slow burn stories with strong world building. I’m excited to see how the story continues.
Read this if you like: → Forbidden love → Dangerous quest → Lost magic & forgotten species
Thank you to the author for the gifted copy of the book.
ARC Review (thank you!): First, I have to say this story took me out of my major romantasy slump. It was easily and quickly devoured, despite the intricate world building.
Fantasy Elements: - definitely high fantasy, but felt a bit convoluted at times. It all came together by the end though. - Intricate magic system, multiple species, multiple deities.
Romance Elements: - Top notch (I mean A+++) yearning and tension. - Open door spice, not entirely gratuitous - did build on the dynamic of the main characters somewhat.
Characters: - FMC: I couldn’t tell you anything about her other than how she responds to her trauma. - MMC: Shadow daddy vibes for those into that. Something felt “off” about him from the beginning to me so I couldn’t get into his character as much as I would have liked - Supporting characters are likeable and interesting (and IMO more interesting than the main characters) - GIVE ME MORE NEFELI!! AND DORIAN!!! Even Arthur and Lyra
Themes/plot: - I did enjoy the exploration of trauma/coping mechanisms/mental health. - To avoid giving anything away, the *main* twist was predictable, however the very very last scene took me by surprise (and brought me back in as I was beginning to lose interest).
All in all, a solid book. Would LOVE any subsequent books (I presume, given the cliffhanger), to be in a different POV, or multi POV, especially since there are so many excellent supporting characters (who I also think deserve to have their own perspectives/struggles/growth heard).
Firstly, thank you so much to Laura Collin for the ARC.
This was a really good read, I really enjoyed it. The world building is very dense and a bit hard to follow initially, à la Game of Thrones, but once you get past that it's very complex and I can tell the author's spent a lot of time crafting this story. It's got some great political intrigue and really cool imagery. I thought the plot was really interesting, too. I can't wait to see where the next book leads. I hope we don't have to wait so long for book 2, I'm already being driven insane.
I loved Alyana. This girl's been through an insane amount of trauma, and she's handling it better than I ever could. I also loved the initial build-up between her and Zaid, I thought their chemistry came off very naturally.
I was also very intrigued by Zaid's backstory, and think he's a very interesting character overall.
The supporting characters were also great. I loved Lyra, Dorian, Dax, and Nefeli, and I want to see more Sam and Bennett. Eiryl-something I can't spell her name, sorry, gave me Melisandre vibes. Haedeon was a formidable villain, and I definitely want to know more about him. I'm also excited to know more about the emperor and the whole thing with Brazen, and of course to know more about the Guardian.
And I hope Nevan dies a very slow, painful, horrible death <3
I was given the opportunity to read the ARC for this book and it did not disappoint. There was a good amount of world building considering this is the first book in a new world. I loved learning about this world and the characters! I got attached to the main characters quickly and found myself fully immersed in their interactions and backstories.
There was so much action and emotion throughout he entire book, even in the last few chapters. So much happened and it was impossible to put the story down.
I’m so excited to see where Laura Collin takes this story and what’s next in the world of Erath!
ARC review!!!! Thank you so much to Laura Collin for the chance to read this in advance 💜
I absolutely loved The Last Guardian by Laura Collin! The main female character immediately drew me in—being one of many siblings, I related to so much of her personality and perspective. The world-building was captivating, with an interesting magic system and rich backstory of gods and goddesses that kept me hooked. The romance was perfectly paced, and the MMC’s sinfully flirtatious yet sweet nature had me falling for him instantly. I was also pleasantly surprised by the found family elements—they added so much heart, especially woven together with her siblings and friend Lyra. A few parts reminded me of parts of stories I’ve loved before, but it still felt fresh and compelling. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next!
I was really looking forward to this book because the author drew inspiration from several of my favorite stories and worlds, including The Witcher, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Narnia, Anastasia, and Pirates of the Caribbean. That combination immediately caught my attention, and I was excited to see how those influences would come together in a new fantasy story.
This was an ambitious and intriguing debut that definitely kept me invested. The story follows a princess who slowly discovers that the world she thought she understood is much bigger and far more magical than she realized. As secrets about guardians, magic, and her own identity begin to unfold, the stakes for both her and the continent grow significantly.
One of my favorite parts of the book was the slow-burn, forbidden romance between the princess and the commander. Their dynamic starts with tension and banter and gradually evolves into something deeper as they spend more time together. The push and pull between duty, loyalty, and growing feelings created some really compelling moments.
At times, the writing style took a little getting used to. Some dialogue and interactions felt slightly literal or overly dramatic, and certain scenes could feel a bit choppy. However, knowing that the author is French helped provide some context for the style, and the flow became easier to settle into as the story progressed.
The plot builds toward some interesting reveals involving the Order, the role of guardians, and the princess’s connection to magic. These twists added a lot of intrigue and helped expand the scope of the world as the story progressed.
The magic system itself was occasionally confusing while reading, and although there is a helpful glossary at the end of the book that explains some of the terminology and mechanics, it would be even more helpful earlier if placed in the beginning of the book.
Overall, this is a strong and ambitious debut with an interesting world, a compelling central relationship, and a lot of potential for where the series could go next especially after that cliffhanger ending. I’m definitely curious to see how the story continues in the next book.

I absolutely loved this first dive into The Nur’Thraa Series.
It’s high fantasy so the world building is very heavy in the first quarter of the book, but once you’ve got to grips with the world, the power, and the characters, the story is thoughtful and action packed.
I LOVED the slow burn and tension between the FMC and MMC; the hints at it being a forbidden union interspersed with flirtatious banter made me giddy! But it’s not all light hearted, with some dark themes including lost and stolen memories, brutal trauma, and heart-wrenching betrayal.
The plot is solid, with unpredictable twists, thrilling battles and steamy romance, and overall this was an incredible introduction to an innovative epic fantasy. I giggled, I raged, and I cried, and I cannot wait to hopefully one day to return to Erath for more of this thrilling tale.
I didn’t want to finish this one, because I just wasn’t ready for it to end. I NEED book two… now! The descriptions in this one are just, “chefs kiss”, so beautiful. I mean come on, “my soul wandered across the black canvas of the night, in the places where stars and dying embers met.” *swoon* C’est très magnifique! The darkness was tense and riveting. The revelations were surprising and addictive. I want more! The way in which Collin kept me invested in this story was superb. The build up for the guardian?! Be still my heart!
Omggg this has become one of my favourite fantasy reads this year! The writing was phenomenal and the storyline and characters were fantastic! Alya and zaids storyline had me giggling and kicking my feet! The burn was sloww and the tension and buildup throughout the story was so good 💅🏼 The magic system was unique and I enjoyed the monsters that were in the story too giving it that darkness! That cliffhanger had me in SHOCK at the end and when I flipped to the next page and it said the end I just about had a heart attack 😩 I cannot wait for book!
What an incredible read! The Last Guardian immediately pulled me in from the first paragraph, by the end I was sobbing 😭
This is a rich high fantasy with immersive world building, layered political intrigue, and a slowly unfolding magic system that keeps you questioning everything. Learning alongside Alyana made the story even more compelling, especially as truths around forbidden magic, hidden histories, and power dynamics begin to unravel.
Alyana’s journey is one of the standout elements. Her experience with trauma, memory loss, and self-discovery adds real emotional depth, and her growth feels meaningful throughout. The supporting characters are just as engaging (and I will always ask for more Nefeli and Dorian!).
The slow burn romance between Alya and Zaid delivers on tension, yearning, and that unmistakable fated mates / destiny-driven connection - even as they resist it. The chemistry is intense, blending forbidden love, emotional vulnerability, and character-driven development in a way that keeps you invested.
One of the most impactful aspects of this story is how it explores grief - especially long-term grief and the isolation from loved ones. Paired with strong found family and family dynamics, it adds so much heart to the story.
The plot balances multiple elements - fantasy adventure, mystery, and character arcs - while building toward twists and reveals that expand the world. And that ending? A brutal cliffhanger that makes you need the next book immediately.
Overall, a strong and immersive fantasy debut that will especially appeal to readers who love fantasy romance, slow burn tension, and intricate, character-driven storytelling.
Thank you to the author for the ARC.

If you are looking for a fantasy with suspense, mystery and yearning that will have you never wanting to put the book down, then this is for you. The Last Guardian is book 1 in the Nur'thraa series by Laura Collins and is her debut series. Firstly, I would like to thank the author, Laura Collins, for an ARC. Importantly, this book contains some triggering themes, so please check the content/ trigger warnings before reading.
The cliffhanger at the end had me screaming. I am so excited for book 2 and to see how everything unfolds. I fell in love with the world building , magic system, the story, and so much more. The story flowed so well with the characters and their stories, as this was an equal character and plot driven. I loved the mystery component of this story, which was done so well. The moment you thought you knew something, it would lead to so much more to find out. The side characters added so much to Alayna's story and her character; there were so many times where we would see her care about them more than herself. Overall, this was amazing, and I'm very excited for book 2.
Alyana's story was done so well, seeing how losing certain memories affected her and how she has tried to do anything she can to get the memories back. Over time, you could see that this really affected her, and you could see how she kind of lost herself. This book really showed her journey to not just finding the answers but finding parts of herself she did not know. There were so many times when I could see myself in Alyana and her story; she is such an amazing character with her strength and willingness to fight for answers. The character growth from her story was amazing, and I am very excited to see what happens in book two. Overall, I highly recommend that you read. Happy reading.
If there’s a top ten list of books I can say will get readers into fantasy, this would be close to the top. I tore into this book, barely able to stop reading as it let drawing me further into this incredible world. I took a small break when I reached 80% because I couldn’t bear to be so near to finishing. The world building and magic system is everything a reader could ever want. The flow is perfect, the writing keeps the story progressing without being too rushed or dragging.
Alyana is not only a character readers will love, but her character growth has the readers actually interested in her story. Her personality comes alive in the story, I love her wit and sharpness. She has such a depth and struggle that that’s so real and empowering. I do love Zaid, he’s a MMC you can add to your list of favorites. While he holds secrets you can see how much he means to his friends, and how he will burn down the world to protect those he cares about. The banter between Alyana and Zaid was one of my favorite aspects to this book, they are truly the perfect balance to each of their personalities. I do have to say I have never experienced this level of yearning before and I absolutely loved it…. Let’s hope it continues in the next book.
The current and new found family brought a lightness to this book. The friendship between Alyana and Nefeli were true friendship goals. Their bond wasn’t instantaneous, it took time, mutual trust, and while at first it seemed one sided, I loved how Alyana opened up and accept their budding friendship. The combination of Lyra, Arthur, Dorian and Alyana was chaotic in a good way, they all balance each other out, and I can’t wait to see more of their energy pop out.
I was swept away from kingdoms, to seas, and mysterious caves, and I can’t decide which part was my favorite. This was genuinely an all around epic adventure that makes me want to pick up this book and re read it over and over again. The small twist at the end, and growing mysteries have me screaming for the next book to be released. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have arc read for this book, it feels great to be one of the few to discover this gem before anyone else can. Readers beware of a story that will transport you in a world you never want to leave.
Is Laura Collin the new queen of the slow burn? I kinda feel like it after finishing The Last Gaurdian!
This book sent me on an adventure and had me turning pages late into the night, as much for the mystery of the quest as for the tantalizing yearning between the two main characters. You can feel the underlying influence of popular series like The Witcher and Pirates of the Caribbean bleeding through this story.
In a land where magic has been banned, Princess Alyana is an early-20s FMC who has lost key memories about her life and has developed an unexplainable mark on her arm. This is where the story begins and is a bit confusing at first, with lots of political and magical history thrown at you alongside information about Alyana's extensive family. The writing feels a bit choppy to start, but the writer quickly finds her rhythm.
After an unfortunate event and promises for assistance in uncovering her lost memories, Alyana finds herself begrudgingly allied with her older brother's mysterious new "friend" and on a quest by ship bound for forbidden magical lands in search of the key to stopping the villainous High Mages from destroying the realm.
A whole host of memorable characters are introduced along the way, and this was probably one of my favorite things about this book. Alyana's relationship with her siblings and their banter with each other was humorous and relatable. The female friendships Alyana nurtures with her childhood friend Lyra and new friend Nefeli feel strong and authentic.
The most meaningful relationship Alyana develops, however, is the one with Zaid, the enigmatic, secretive and attractive commander tasked with helping her unlock her lost memories. And when people say they want slow-burn, full-of-yearning romance - THIS is what we mean! The progression of their relationship from dislike and mistrust to understanding and deep yearning feels organic. The banter. The flirting. The connection over their shared past traumas. The tension. UGH! It's pure perfection!
But this isn't just a story about a quest and a romance. This is also a story about a young woman healing, rediscovering herself and learning to let go of the trauma and abuse of a past defined by loss and heartbreak - which adds so much depth to this story.
Though I found some things in this story a bit predictable, I was pleasantly surprised by others. This is a fantastic debut, and I'm eager to see where this story goes.
Thank you to the author for sharing an advanced reader copy of this book with me. This review is my honest opinion, and I'm leaving it voluntarily.
Thank you to the author for letting me read this book. The book grabbed my attention from literally the first paragraph. I fell in love with the plot and the characters. I loved the FMC Alayna so much. I need to read more from this author. BUT THE ENDING !!!! Please tell me book two comes sooon.
I am at a loss for words! That ending?! Are you kidding me, I was so locked in that I didn’t even realize I was at the end. I flipped to the next page to read “the end” finding myself having to pick my jaw up from the ground. I need to know what happens next IMMEDIATELY!
I went from overwhelmed to intrigued to obsessed with this book. In the beginning there’s so much going on, fascinating stuff that captured my interest but left me a little confused.Until things started clicking!!! The banter between the characters is spot on. And the slow slow burn! The suspense regarding where scars came from, and why her memories are gone. I HAD to keep reading. It was like watching a train wreck, I knew WHERE we were going but not HOW we were getting there. I was truly invested in most of the characters but not the FMC-at first. As we dove deeper into her back story she definitely grew on me. But that ending!!!! What??? So good. And a cliffhanger.
3.75 ⭐️ Thanks for the Arc, Laura Collin. This was a beautiful book. I keep finding myself wondering about it whenever I wasn’t reading it. The writing was beautiful. I understand the writer is french and tried her best to write it in English and she did a great job.. I would definitely collect a physical copy. I didn’t see any physical pre order option on Amazon before.(they have it now) I loved the world building and the plot. The characters were interesting too but I care for them for the plot but not as a character if that makes sense? I am still not sure how I feel about the main characters and their romance. It was slow burn and I do love a slow burn. But for me the chemistry wasn’t there yet. The fantasy elements were refreshing though it reminded me of some games like league and dota. The writer described everything with so much description, you can easily picture everything vividly. It was nice but at times it felt too much. Overall this was a good debut book and I would love to continue the series. Hopefully it gets to the right audience.
Thank you to Laura Collin for the ARC of The Last Guardian. While it wasn’t the book for me, I appreciate the journey of Alyana. And, while there was a lot that I wasn’t crazy about in the book, the potential is there and I truly believe the future installments in this series will get better and better.
The book follows Alyana, a princess who suffers from some kind of compartmentalized memory loss who is the younger sister treated like a red-headed step child by her father. Then, on the fifth anniversary of her mother’s death, some strange mark appears on her skin – a tattooish kind of branding. She seeks the assistance of the high mage who… turns on her. Fleeing on the eve of her sister’s wedding, she’s thrust into the middle of an impending war between humans and the other-worldly. She doesn’t trust herself, nor can she trust those around her… but this one guy appears to be on her side sooooooooooo maybe???? Though trusting her gut instincts didn’t work out for her before. Soon she realizes what’s at stake and wants to do her part to save the world – I mean, toss in some witches, goblins, portals, demons, white magic, black magic and some creepy dreams and relics and you’ve got the story in the bag.
I enjoyed our FMC’s self talk, the repetition of the words when she was trying to self soothe or be her own spiritual buoy. I admired her tenacity.
I will say the scene just before she fled… that was like WHOA WHAT?!?! That was the hook that kept me reading because I had to know what the heck was up! The way the villain was described gave me the SUPER CREEPS!!! He was written quite well. I envisioned him something like Jafar. Don’t ask me why because that doesn’t fit the description but that’s just what I saw… cause he was creepy too. When he said, “What a delicious pleasure to see you.” It was instant hate for me. Good job!
Now, my critical feedback… this is me being me. I hate to tear apart someone’s baby but some of the aspects are worthy of mentioning because I’ve seen many others who do reviews mention these very things. But to be honest, I just couldn’t get into this book because there were too many little things that kept adding up in my head which then turned into big distractions I couldn't excape. I kept putting it down because it wasn’t drawing me in.
The chemistry between them didn’t come across as authentic. It felt merely like words on paper telling us this is what it is but nothing they did or said made it seem so. I didn’t buy it. Everything between Zaid and Alyana felt forced. It felt anything but organic and genuine.
Character flaws – she was just a bitch to him. He was a cocky guy which is definitely a typical MMC trait, but she just came across as a total bitch. Then, his perpetual annoyance with her asking questions made me really dislike him. I mean, she’d been thrust into this new experience, taken from the only home she’s ever known and he’s annoyed with her asking questions. Which leads me to my other chief complaint with him – he will NEVER answer ANYTHING. At first, it was like a play into the mysterious enigma that he was… totally feeding into that kind of trope characteristic (maybe he’s a bird shifter or something?) but then it simply became a character FLAW I decided I didn’t enjoy whatsoever. The timing of the meaningful conversation between them felt off. They didn’t communicate for days and then it’s this pour your heart out dialogue… it felt very misplaced.
The “thing” between them felt like it was being made into something so much more than it was – but even at 75% it was ONE kiss… and a lot of staring at each other…. Most of all him outright avoiding her altogether and her questions. Their time together didn’t seem to be enough to amount to anything. It all felt like conjecture made up in her head. I mean, his actions alone could be the reason for the male loneliness epidemic. Sure he’s hot but he has zero communication skills. Sorry, but looks don’t sell the whole package. The idea that if you’re confused about what you feel that you just run off and actively avoid someone – total red flag, move on girl.
Oh and about the kiss – it was so underwhelming which then further disappoints me because who doesn’t want them to finally experience that moment… hoping it will catapult this “thing” into being… something. But because I didn’t really like either of the MCs – I was like… meh. Honestly it feels like everytime they’re around each other they’re just glaring at or oogling each other. He looks at her lips, her heart pounds, she knows he can hear it… she flushes… repeat…ad nauseum. When they finally had their moment, his words… they weren’t right - it didn’t work. They felt like something just typed on a page and not the actual scene… it was all so one-sided.
Some of the metaphors were so bizarre to me… “trembling like aspen leaves” – what does that even mean? And this is from someone who lived where the aspen groves actually are… that still makes no sense to me. Or that her “mouth went dry just looking at him.” Really? “...the relic…vibrated against my skin, shaking my core.” What? What does that even mean?
I feel like the stares and glowering… our two MC’s eye fucking each other was supposed to build up this incredible tension but it just became repetitive and weird. He looks at her and leaves her panting? Seriously?
Several times it seems some words were used to end one sentence and then used immediately again in the next, which even when they aren’t used again, the immediate repetition felt off. “Tambourine” was one. That’s such an odd word and for it to be repeated so closely together… made it stick out. Things like this, I know, I know, they’re quite tedious but they stick out like neon signs to me so I mention them. Another was when she said, “I needed to distract my mind.” and in the next sentence says, “Desperate for distraction…” Bloomed was another used too closely in relation to one another in the novel.
There were so many phrases that were used and abused in this book. When it becomes so repetitive, I take notice. So, tell me, friends, do YOUR nostrils flare? I swear everyone in this book’s nostrils flared. The word nostrils appears 25 times in this book… And nostrils flared 14 times and tickled 9 times. It was grossly repetitive as was the use of the word “ignited”. “...my body ignited every time he was near.” “...emanating from his body, igniting mine…” “...my body ignited at the closeness…” “...igniting me in the process.” “What do you ignite inside of me?” And “clenched”... his hands clenched, her fingers clenched, the teeth clenched, the hand clenched, the jaw clenched, teeth clenched, jaw clenched, teeth clenched… jaw clenched… Ya’ll are gonna have some serious TMJ if you keep this up. And the smiles that “didn’t reach his eyes”. Also, his eyes were always blazing… I’m thinking he might need to seek medical treatment.
The family secrets thing was just… meh. Then the “why didn’t you tell me”. That, too, didn’t feel authentic.
Quite a bit of info dumping between the realms/kingdoms… their sigils and what not, I got a little lost on that - won’t lie.
We never got answers to the douche canoe which was grossly disappointing.
Another thing that was just described strangely to me was the tattoos, the ink “dancing”... that, to me, indicates movement so are these tattoos actually moving? It was never clear to me but that was just an odd thing that stuck out.
FAV QUOTES “It’s always the worst people who have control.” “You are not alone.” “Don’t forget to love, Alyana. It’s the only thing that proves we’re alive.”
O.M.G….this book…newest 5🌟 read! This is one you do NOT want to miss!
🖤Do you love a Strong FMC that’s not afraid to bite back — one that will show her claws but not let you know what she’s thinking until she’s 2 steps ahead of you?! Do you want to read about an MMC that will *try* to rescue her…even though she basically tells him to F* off and it will probable come back to bite him somehow anyways?!
🪄If you love mysterious, forbidden magic, secrets that may expose an entire Kingdom’s lies…sprinkle in a dash of forced proximity, found family, forbidden love and the most real grief story I’ve ever read…then this book is for you!!! 🥰
We follow Alyana on her journey after her mother’s death, a day that she cannot recall, and learn about secrets that are being kept from her as she tries to uncover memories that were taken from her!
She receives a mysterious mark, somehow linked to her mother’s passing — in trying to seek answers regarding the mark, she reaches out to the High Mage and only ends up with more questions in return, when she is suddenly attacked 👀
The mysterious mark that plagues Alyana is ALSO mysteriously linked to others… who she later identifies as having similar patterns on their skin but she doesn’t know why 🧐
She manages to escape…but barely! She is rescued by her brother’s “friend” and later awakes from her brush with death and a harrowing rescue by our dark brooding MMC 😏 …only to find herself adrift on a ship in the sea where she has never been before 😳 She has escaped her kingdom, her father who has set out to ruin her life and destroy her mind and soul, and a relationship that she can barely even recall having. She meets the Captain of the ship, yet another bada** FMC ❤️ and in her finds, perhaps, one of the first true friends she’s ever had!
This book gives all the strong FMC vibes, with the princess who does not need saving — because she HATES the man trying to save her! But also the dark brooding MMC with all the “Touch her and ☠️” energy 🖤
The yearningggg and the SLOWWWW burn…I have not read a slow burn with yearning this good since The Silversmith 😍
My favorite part is when Alyana is talking about all the scars across her body put there throughout her life by various people — many with ill intent. And she learns to LOVE those scars because the represent her SURVIVAL, her endurance and how she was taking control of her life ❤️
And that ending 😱…fully pulled a RY in Onyx Storm…the way I was swiping that kindle page back and forth like “The End”?!…What do you mean “The End”?! 👀Ummm ma’am?! Ima need book 2…ASAP 😩😭❤️🥺😅
My flabbers have been gasted. What is sleep? Not something that’s a priority when your soul has been sucked into this book.
4.5 ⭐️
Did we enroll at slow burn university to earn a major in YEARNING? Because holy moly. The weighted stares. The banter. And the *almost* kisses?! By 50%, I literally was punching the air every time I turned to the next chapter page and nothing happened between them. Side note - would have loved for Zaid to call Alyana “ashae.” IYKYK. Hopefully it’s incorporated at a later date, especially since it would bring her conversations with Nefeli and Arystan full circle. And speaking of bringing things full circle… I really need to commend the author for that double meaning on the books opening line. Chefs kiss.
“I have never been able to look away from you” got me good for some reason. Zaid is so hard with everyone but her and it makes it mean so much more. The fact that he was able to draw her, after everything… I just - 🥹
The author did a great job and portraying the extremely dark side of grief in a beautiful way. I loved seeing Alyana evolve over the course of the book and open her heart. She deserves so much.
Given this is a high fantasy, it can be confusing at times (lots of different names/places/beings, complicated magic system, intense world-building) trying to piece everything together, but it all makes sense in the end. The writing at the beginning is sort of stilted and a LOT happens which can be overwhelming, but overall I think it goes into the storyline well especially since the FMC has memory loss. And once the MMC enters the chat, trust me. You’ll be sat.
I’m really excited for the next book and can’t wait to see where Alayna’s story takes her. I have many theories and I’m anxious to know if I’m right.
Until we meet again, Zaid 😘

✨📖👑 ARC REVIEW 👑📖✨ The Last Guardian – Laura Collin
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Some stories feel like memories… others feel like destiny. 🔮
Alyana wakes with silence where her past should live — a life written in missing pages, a history soaked in blood she cannot remember.
Five years later, magic blooms across her skin like a secret refusing to stay buried… and suddenly the world that swore magic was gone begins to tremble. ✨
This book feels like wandering through forgotten ruins at twilight 🌙 where every shadow whispers, every truth hides teeth, and every step leads closer to something inevitable.
A mysterious stranger. A dangerous journey. A truth powerful enough to shatter kingdoms. 👑
The romance simmers softly beneath the danger — quiet, magnetic, inevitable… like two stars slowly pulled into the same orbit. ✨💫
Laura Collin writes like a spellcaster — every page layered with longing, mystery, and the haunting beauty of discovering that everything you believed may have been carefully crafted illusion.
Because sometimes the past is not lost… it is hidden.
And sometimes the truth does not set you free — it changes who you are. 🖤
And THAT ENDING…
I closed the book and simply stared at the wall. Because how dare a story end with truths so sharp they split the world open… and leave my heart suspended in the space between revelation and ruin. 😭🔥
Let’s just say… everything is not what it seems.
And I will be thinking about that final twist for a very long time.
If you love: ✨ lost memories ✨ forbidden magic ✨ destiny & dangerous truths ✨ slow-burn tension 💫 ✨ romantic longing threaded through peril 🖤 ✨ world-shaking revelations
I was lucky enough to be gifted an ARC of The Last Guardian by the author and wow… for a debut this absolutely blew me away 😍
This is a dark fantasy romance that you definitely want to go into prepared. The world building is rich and super detailed, I won’t lie I was taking notes at the start 😂 but once everything clicked I was completely hooked.
It’s also a slow burn 🔥 and honestly it works so well with the story, really lets the tension build alongside the world and characters.
The atmosphere was incredible, those creepy creatures 👀 so well written and genuinely unsettling. And the FMC… feisty is an understatement lol, I loved her. She brought so much fire to the story and kept things interesting the whole way through 🔥
By the halfway mark I was fully invested and didn’t want to put it down. If you love immersive worlds, darker vibes and a story that pulls you in deep, this one is absolutely worth it.
I love finding new fantasy books that break the mould a little. While some aspects were a bit predictable in my opinion, they still stood their ground. I really thought I knew where this was going but the ending proved me wrong!
I was a little frustrated by our FMC, Alyana at times, especially when it came to the ‘forbidden’ romance. She spent the first half of the book saying they couldn’t be together, then was getting annoyed when our MMC expressed the same sentiment.
I found the world building dense and hard to understand at times, but there is a glossary at the end of the book that helps explain everything.
Overall I enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to the next! Thank you Laura for this eARC!
Laura, what did you put in this book besides blood sweat and tears?! This book was written so beautifully, from the world building, characters to explaining every little detail is phenomenal. 👏🏼
Alyana has a traumatic past and it began when her mother passed away 5 years prior to the events of the book. She couldn’t remember parts of her past including her mothers death so she kept that to herself, away from her family… She was manipulated, lied to and has so much trauma.. She is definitely a complicated person but seeing her develop through her own experiences is so powerful.
Zaidkiel, oh my stars… my man, my man!! 🥵 From the very beginning of the book I fell in love with him. Two chapters in and I caught feelings.. Zaid with his sass and the sassy jokes towards Alyana and how he just knows how to annoy her without trying and especially how smirky he is ugh I love it!
The world building is incredible. We get to see many places, and creatures. Such a dark and moody world. The monsters are wild, and the cliffhanger will kill you. So many questions and so many thoughts. I definitely need the second book asap.
If you love High/Dark fantasy, lost magic, forbidden species, monsters x men, forbidden love, slow burn and etc this book is for you!!
Thank you so much Laura Collin for sending me an ARC for the Last Guardian and for also allowing me to be apart of your street team!
This book really tugged at my heartstrings in some parts. I’m still trying to find the right words to describe how moved I am as I write this review after finishing this captivating book. The characters are truly amazing, and the world-building is beautifully done. The plot, the twist, and the character growth are agonizingly amazing.
The story follows a princess whose world is turned upside down when she turns 18. She’s left to figure things out and make them work. Five years later, she finds a strange mark on her. She sets off on a journey to find answers, and along the way, she might just meet a devastatingly handsome gentleman with emerald green eyes who could hold the answers she’s seeking….
This book has some trigger warnings, so please check them out. Overall, it’s a fantastic high fantasy book with great world-building, a relatable main character, and stunning descriptions. It does end on a cliffhanger, so you’ve been warned, but completely worth it. I don’t think I’ve ever highlighted a book as much as I have with this one.

The Last Guardian by Laura Collin was such an emotional and immersive read.
Zaidkiel and Alyana’s story pulled me in immediately… the beginning is tragic and honestly brought tears to my eyes. Alyana’s backstory is heavy and definitely warrants the content warnings, but it adds so much depth to her character.
The magic system is completely unique, and the worldbuilding is incredibly detailed. I also loved the reluctant allies-to-lovers dynamic. It kept me hooked the entire time. Alyana is such a strong, compelling character, and I found myself rooting for her every step of the way.
I’m really excited to see where this series goes next.
Thank you to the author for the eARC of The Last Guardian!
It took me a moment to follow along with some of the terms and world building (wasn’t aware of the glossary at the end 😅) but once I felt I had an understanding it was really enjoyable
The pace flows well, the characters are intriguing and kept me wanting to keep reading. I didn’t see the twist of the story coming so that was a bonus!
Really looking forward to book 2 especially after that ending
3.5 stars but I completely understand why a cohort of people would rate it 5*. Unfortunately, this novel had a combination of character devices that irritate and frustrate me so to keep this honest I’ve rated it lower than others.
Despite this, the storyline is very interesting and there are a bunch of different characters that star and support and have their own stories to tell. The dynamics between the FMC’s family were a bit odd in that I couldn’t quite put my finger on the threads that bound them and I’m not sure whether that was me or the way those interactions were developed and written.
But I was SO hoping for what happened in the end to happen because I love that sort of cliffhanger! Such deliciously negative emotions and I’m here for all of them 🤣 I think a lot of people will like this novel and it’s firmly rooted in a known fantasy which was just so nice and exciting to step into.
