Review of advance copy received from Author

So, let me start off by saying I received this book as an ARC from the author. I was incredibly excited for the prospect of this novel, specifically it being marketed as a “tragedy” rather than a “romance.” This is a very accurate representation of this book and I want everyone who is looking into reading this novel to understand that it is not meant to be romantic. Bone Chills is a unique and addicting queer fantasy I would recommend to those who like morally grey characters, want something a little different than your typical HEA, and still enjoy a little spice.

First of all: the characters!! All these characters were people I was interested in knowing about. Each was different, nobody blended together and I was never confused who was who. Even Dallen and Doran, as twins, felt like distinctly different characters from each other. I think the author could write side stories on all of them, and I’d want to read every single one. They each feel like different, unique characters, with their own traits and personalities. A few of my favorites include: Froggy, because I love how he and Alfrikr seem to share their belief in the gods and he feels very important to Alfrikr and his curse, also he’s just…so much deeper than he first appears, Siv because she was a strong woman who stood up for herself and knew her worth, and Gunther, the fur trader, simply because I loved his vibes!

I cannot possibly give this review without talking about Dallen, my beloved. I love Dallen. I love Dallen so much!! He’s so sweet and I love how he feels kinda closed off, yet vulnerable too. The inclusion of polyamory with Dallen and his partners, how Dallen openly talks about his reservations, his concerns and worries. The way that, though he loves his twin, that he felt as if people didn’t see them as separate people. I think he is my favorite character in this book. As Alfrikr’s best friend, I think the author has done a beautiful job making me care for him so deeply. I love how real he feels, the inclusion of his relationship, and the way he feels distinctly separate from his twin brother, Doran.

And speaking of twins, I really love how their bond is described. Of course a “twin bond” concept is not new, but the way this is woven into the story, written into this world’s magic system? I love it. As I’d like to keep my review as spoiler free as possible, I cannot quite get into how interesting blood sacredness, the way magic is considered to be something to be cherished and how it is “meant” to be used. Not to mention Froggy and his own use of blood sacredness as well as his view on its use. The world building feels well-paced, it doesn’t drag and it doesn’t feel like an info-dump. We learn slowly, little by little, as characters interact and from Alfrikr’s own thoughts, a journey we’re also discovering along with our main character.

This novel is written in a stylistic choice I have never seen before, which I’ll admit was hard to get used to. I know the use of bold, italics, and different fonts can be jarring and a little confusing, but trust the process. I grew to love the inclusion of the handwritten script within the story, almost like a journal entry told as a reflection back to Alfrikr’s past. The bolds, the italics, in certain scenes, from what I can tell, seem to reflect Alfrikr’s curse and mental spiral. His mental illness, that representation on why he does the things he does, how he acts and presents himself, how he thinks in general— as someone who suffers from mental illnesses myself, I could see myself reflected back into Alfrikr. I loved this main character. He was human; he felt real. I like that at times, you could not tell who were the “good guys” and who were the “bad guys.” I spent so much of my time reading questioning the motives of Doran, of Ivaldr, and even of Alfrikr. Really, I just had a great time reading this book!

I think Bone Chills really benefits from being the first in a series, mainly because it feels like a long story that needs to be told in parts. I think it was a wise decision not to put all of it in one, as it is very clear there is more to be told. Alfrikr’s curse is prevalent throughout the entire story, though his interactions with Loreth, our main “antagonist” grow increasingly more frequent as time goes on. It takes time to get to the smut, but I promise you, it is WORTH IT. The uniqueness in how these scenes happen—again, please read the book because I cannot spoil anything here for how a man cursed by another man is still lusting after his enemy, leads to some of the hottest sex scenes I’ve read in a while. I cannot get that mirror scene out of my head!

All in all, that ending HOOKED me and I cannot wait for the next one to release. Truly, I think everyone should give this one a try because you will not regret it!
