Ciardis Weathervane is officially engaged to one man and bonded to a second. She should be planning the wedding ceremony, bearding the nobles of the imperial court in their dens, and exposing an imposter emperor. Instead she’s spending her engagement on the lawless road to the western lands.
Now with the help of a guide from a tribe of seers, Ciardis is traveling to the ancient city of Kifar. Rumored to hold the only device capable of stopping the blutgott, Ciardis, Sebastian and Thanar must break a half-century’s old quarantine in order to enter the fabled city.
But the collar of Diamis is not the only thing they seek. The princess heir’s pet wyvern lurks in wait for them and the emperor, who has done everything short of challenging the new triad of Algardis outright, wants its head on a platter upon their return.
If the unscrupulous bandits don’t make short work of them, Ciardis knows that when they return she and Sebastian will have to a face and unmask the man who has stolen the imperial throne. The only question that remains…will that be before or after they’re forced to battle a god?
Book Six of Courtlight continues the drama and characters that we have grown to love.
So, I won't bore you all with character details or bits and pieces on the major trinity. If you've been reading Courtlight, then you know the three major names and the secondary characters as well. So I won't go through the introductions of everyone and assume you know them by now. If not...maybe you should check out a different review. I have reviewed them all so far, so feel free to check mine! :)
Anyway, this picks off almost immediatly after Sworn to Defiance. Ciardis Weathervane is struggling to balance out the bond she has formed with her two significant males - Imperial Heir Sebastian and Kith daemoni Thanar both of whom she is soulbonded to. One soulbond is rare enough but two of them is starting to strain Ciardis' abilities. Given that Sebastian and Thanar both want her attentions and cannot manage to agree on much doesn't really help matters. The struggle within the trinity is the major character conflict within the story and Edun does a fantastic job of using it to add stress to the characters and allow for growth as the three explore their limitations and understandings of each other.
Outside of the three is the mission to the fabled city of Kifar - a city lost to the empire in that no one goes there anymore. It doesn't help matters that it is on the other side of a desert and that, within that desert are marauders that, you know, murder imperial citizens to keep them away from the city (or so it appears). Add in a rather irate dragon and the fact that the 'Emperor' wants Sebastian dead (or so it is speculated) and you have a setup for a good plot.
And Vana has a major appearance in the story. As I said in a previous review, I really like Vana and the growth she causes in Ciardis. Sworn to Ascension is no exception to that rule. Vana provides some excellent insight for Ciardis to consider AND moves forward several elements from previous books that were left unresolved. And, you know, she gets to be Vana and that's just awesome.
It is clear that Edun has some very detailed ideas of where she wants her characters to be within the plot and the events. Furthermore, it is also clear that she is having a *lot* of fun playing with her characters and allowing them to bounce off each other in unique and interesting ways. The main trinity (Ciardis,Sebastian, and Thanar) are all given excellent opportunities to grow by the secondary character trinity of Terris, Christian, and Raisa. The interactions within the characters are more complex than in previous novels, but it doesn't feel forced. Terah Edun seems to have a real talent for characterization and interaction and it is in full force for Sworn to Ascension. I often didn't realize how far I had read in the book until after I turned off the app to go to bed - that's how much fun I was having with the characters.
The only major flaw in the story is that it doesn't feel like much is resolved. The conclusion is a bit weak in that it doesn't feel like there was any major progress on the 'outside' conflict related to Kifar. We get several major details dropped (I won't spoil them) and then a big ol' smasher and the story ends. It practically screams 'SEQUEL COMING' - which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it falls under the flaw category because it does feel more 'hanging' than any of the previous Courtlight novels.
Still, Sworn to Ascension is an excellent book with some amazing character writing. I was swept up in to it and lost track of time so well that I had to brew 3 cups of tea and only drank one of them hot - I'd forgotten the other two times. Grab this baby up.
Oh, oh, oh! This was such a great, fantastic book! Things were complicated, and they hurt, but hopefully they worked to a better place through this book! And jaw-dropping ending, which is worse for me, because the 7th book isn't out yet!
In this latest book in the series we learn more about the true nature of Ciardis and her companions. It's incredible to me how Terah manages to continue to thicken in the plot whilst also maintaining the trend of of using every single character, idea, or place mentioned even off hand to continue the story.
Talk about dragging it out. So many things that just don't need to be in here. It just feels like it's space filler, and what is with the weird nonsense arguments between Ciardis and Sebastian? They make very little sense and they don't half go on. I honestly feel like I've been mugged for £3.99 and I don't really care to read any more of their complaining.
This one I got a little mad at Ciardis, for choosing to avoid the issue of a triple bond rather than discuss it, especially with Sebastian. Then again, he is being a typical make and letting jealousy get in the way, rather than dealing.
Terah’s books are great! I love them all! I started with the “Blades” series ( even better!) and have kept on going. She’s got the gift for writing....
My first thoughts of finishing this book are. Really it ends there!! Terah Edun had taken this series to a new place and the relationships with it. But just a heads up nothing is really answered. I understand why because it is getting there bit I would have still liked a little bit answered just not everything. I know this is veg but it is because I do not give spoilers when reviewing a book. I still loved it without having my questions answered. It kept me intrigued threw out the whole story.
I hope everything will work out for the three tired together. Yes they start on their journey with few people but Ciardis was having a lot of problems, mostly emotional ones. She has some great friends or allies as everyone keeps saying even her. Things happen that you wouldn't think and certain people say/act like children. However, towards the end of the book it defend that they are going to work together. Still not were they all need to be to save the empire. My last thought on the book still is really it end there! I guess I just have to wait for the next book to come out to see into the city and hope none die there.
Sworn to Ascension was good. But I saw a few annoying grammar/spelling errors, which really annoyed me as I had been waiting for this book since summer. The fact that the group didn't even get to Kifar annoyed me too. The book seemed much shorter than those previous, also. All in all, I knocked off a point because of the things I mentioned. The other books in this series were much better.
Reread December 12th, 2019 This book still feels kind of short to me, because it doesn't cover as much, mostly just traveling to Kifar, and it actually is a bit shorter. That said, it's still pretty good, with lots of Ciardis/Sebastian/Thanar drama that had me laughing and wincing in sympathy. I look forward to the next book! 4 stars.
I love these stories, I just wish Sworn to Ascension was longer. Of course, I wish the stories would never end, but with this particular book I felt the end came too fast. Like I was unprepared. One minute I am wrapped up in the story and next minute it was over. That is my only complaint with this book and that may be my own wish to keep on reading. As always though, I continue to become even more enthralled with the Courtlight Series with every passing book and I am eagerly awaiting the next installment.
So frustrated. The proof editor did a very poor job catching grammatical errors in this book. All of the previous books in the series had some grammatical errors, but this one has so many that I've had to read some paragraphs several times to just to figure out what the author meant to say. Also, I've read about 86% of this one and just have to put it down. Too much confusion and the story line does not match up to what the "teaser" said it would be about. Very disappointed.
This is a continuation of the series, if your reading the Courtlight series you will you will enjoy their continuing story. Do not start the series with this one but I would recommend this series and author to all that enjoy an adventure with a mixed up heroine with remarkable powers that she is just learning about. You also have demons, dragons, and would be lovers. I will be going on with the story with #7.
these books are getting too short. this one covered what? all of 3 days and got us now where really in the storyline, merely from one location to the next with about 3 or 4 details that seemed crucial to the timeline. this book is unworthy to be included as a sequential book, it would have been better served as book 5.5. Though an avid follower of this series, I am thoroughly disappointed with the book. it was not worth the long wait.
This story is getting progressively more monotonous with filler that doesn't push the plot or bring new ideas at a rate that is enjoyable. It's not vague in a way that has me on the edge of my seat. It is vague in the way that they are trying to elongate something that should be done now. I'm tempted to just read plot summaries for remaining books so I know how it ends instead of wasting my time on reading these filler books.
I'm a little disappointed it didn't end here and I didn't see an indication of release date for the next one. Additionally, some of the immature behaviors by the three with the soul bond annoyed me. If I were any of them, I'd get rid of the others. Still I enjoyed the book and want to read the next one. These are the reasons I gave this book 4 stars.
My biggest complaint is that nothing actually happens until 60% into this book other than the main character complaining about her love triangle. Ignoring that, the rest of the book is a pretty good first act. However, there are no other acts in the rest of the book. It just ends.
Great continuity, some interesting character development, and a killer ending. I'm fairly bouncing with pent up agitation, wondering why I didn't let the books build up before reading them!
I was disappointed that 6 books in there is still nothing resolved. Their relationship is still on the rocks, they are at the brink of war and are rushing to save a city from being destroyed. At the end of book 6 there is still way too many loose ends left open.
A fun read with excellent character development. I hated to finish it because I liked the story line and characters. The only weakness that bugged me was too much of the story conflict was just in the protagonist's head.
Ciardis and her team is sent on another mission by the Emperor. This time to a city that has been, in essence, sealed off for 50 years. It ends as they near the city and is thus a cliff hanger to entice one into the next book of the series.
This books was great. I loved it all. The ending was not the one i would have thought for it. Can't wait for book seven to come out now. I do hope it is soon on that note.
I still plan to continue the series, but this book was a real let down. It seemed unfocused and probably could have been pared down to a novella length. Nothing much happened.
