Dr. Collins achieves another notable accomplishment by writing “You Visited Me: Grace and Healing in the Modern Medical Center” after previously mastering clinical medicine and scientific research. He covers many important topics in a relatable fashion for a broad audience. His description of the challenges faced by cancer patients and their doctors is consistently insightful as well as emotionally engaging. He skillfully uses patient stories to illustrate God’s grace. The book is packed with heart tugging stories. Many readers will be moved to tears, perhaps more than once. An oncologist cannot escape witnessing physical as well as emotional suffering and Dr. Collins uses his experience as a physician scientist along with his understanding of Catholicism to effectively address that challenging topic. He also accurately describes the pressures and anxieties that many physicians who care for very sick patients experience as a consequence of their work. His own faith journey will resonate with former skeptics and with converts. I anticipate that his personal story will provide the last nudge toward faith needed by many individuals who are still skeptical. This is an impressive piece of writing. It’s earned a place among my favorite books.
