An easy to read, endearing story set in Somerset between 1918 and 1930. Freddie is the title character, he has a difficult start to life as money is tight. His mother struggles with agoraphobia, and only Freddie understands her and helps. But Freddie is different, he sees dead people, a fact which his father cannot understand or tolerate, so Freddie lives in his own world, afraid to tell anyone what he sees. As Freddie grows up the family buy a bakery, but Freddie has his own hopes dreams for his future.

Oh I so enjoyed this book, it’s not my usual choice of novel but it was recommended to me and I was amazed how quickly I read it.

It’s an easy read starting in 1918 during the First World War and telling the story of Freddie Barcussy and his family and their struggles as they live and work in Somerset.

Freddie doesn’t have an easy life, supporting his Mum who has a fear of going outside of their garden, a father with an explosive temper and Freddie who has a natural gift that he can’t mention, because people don’t understand these things. Then there’s Freddie’s love for Kate and the challenges they face, that keep them apart.

I cried in a few places whilst reading the book as I found some parts of the story really moving.

I am now reading the follow on book The Girl by the River and I am looking forward to finding out about Freddie’s life with his true love.

Well worth a read.

No spoiler at all. A well written easy to read story. The characters will stay with me for a long time. I enjoy books where ppl work hard and are ambitious. This is one of those.

This author likes her description there was quite a lot of it, which im not really into. The story however was good because the main character has psychic abilities and i love reading about ppl who have this gift. From poverty to earning is another of my favourite genres and this had plenty, good book.
