Always the Best Man… Loyalty Is the Perfect Alibi

ARC Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 stars — Twisty, tense, and psychologically wicked from beginning to end, this book’s pacing never loosens its grip. This book doesn’t sneak up on you; it confronts you head-on, smiling politely, shaking your hand… while quietly measuring you for a coffin. And I mean that as the highest compliment. 😈

S.K. Winters’ The Best Man is deliciously sinister from page one — the kind of psychological thriller where trust becomes a dangerous weapon, and every act of loyalty hides a threat waiting for the safety to click off. The tension doesn’t just build; it coils, slowly, patiently, until you realize you’ve been holding your breath for chapters.

Set deep within the realm of psychological revenge, forensic mystery, and dark domestic suspense, this story crawls under your skin instead of jumping out at you—no cheap shocks. The horror lies in patterns, implications, and the chilling realization that what seemed like a tragic coincidence might actually be calculated acts of vengeance—far more personal and deliberate than anyone expected. It’s less about who did it and more about how long it’s been happening while everyone smiled for photos and toasted champagne. 🍾

At the heart of it all is Elliot Harrow, the publicly mourned widower haunted by the eerily similar deaths of four wives, each five years apart. When the fourth wife dies on their wedding day, even grief can’t muffle the unignorable scream of statistics. Enter Dr. Mara Ellison, a forensic geneticist who specializes in cold cases and trusts data more than reputations. Science has finally caught up to the past, and the evidence is starting to uncover the truth that was never buried — it was standing in plain sight all along.

Mara is an excellent anchor—sharp, methodical, emotionally unaffected. She follows microscopic traces while everyone else clings to comforting narratives. But this isn’t merely a contest of evidence; it’s a psychological battle. Because the true antagonist doesn’t just manipulate events—they manipulate perceptions. They understand loyalty, grief, and social bonds, weaponizing them with ritualistic patience. This is someone embedded within the circle, protected by familiarity, moving like a predator who needs no concealment—because no one ever thinks to look at them twice.

The evolving relationship between Mara and Detective Jonah Price adds gritty realism, their partnership rooted in mutual respect and a shared obsession with truth over convenience. Meanwhile, Elliot’s past romances reveal themselves to be carefully curated, as if someone else has been shaping the narrative from just outside the spotlight. Looming in the background is the ever-present best man—a constant figure in every wedding, every celebration, every tragedy. The more you think about that, the more unsettling it becomes.

What makes this thriller truly resonate is its obsession with patterns—not chaos, not impulsive rage, but meticulously choreographed moves. Elegant. Scheduled. As if the crimes were designed not just to kill, but to teach a lesson. Revenge here isn’t explosive; it’s patient, programmed, and terrifyingly devoted. “Loyalty is the best blindfold" could be the book’s thesis, revealing how love, friendship, and trust can be twisted into perfect disguises.

The pacing is unrelenting in its quiet, persistent way. Nearly every chapter ends on a hook that compels you to read just one more, and the chapter titles pulse with foreshadowing. Winters’ writing is sharp and atmospheric, depicting polished weddings and wealthy social circles with the same dread as sterile labs and evidence rooms. Even in wide-open spaces, the sense of claustrophobia lingers—because the real threat isn’t in the shadows; it’s in the wedding photos.

By the end, answers are given—yet comfort is not. Resolution is achieved—but peace remains elusive. It’s the kind of ending that satisfies your mind while leaving your nerves tingling and your trust shattered. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ without hesitation. I devoured this book and immediately wanted to scream, "You HAVE to read this so we can spiral about it together.”

Overall, this is a chilling, twisty thriller that reminds us the greatest danger isn’t the stranger lurking in the dark—it’s the familiar face standing beside you at the altar. Read it… just maybe keep a skeptical eye on the wedding photos afterward. 🤵‍♂️

How close is your best friend
Elliot Harrow has an amazing life, well-to-do, a beautiful woman on his arm to marry him, and a great best friend who is his best man... again. Finding that this is Elliot's fourth wedding, with Lucas being his best man, the previous 3 woman died... differently, of course. This brings a lot down upon Elliot. How is he supposed to deal with this one? She died on their wedding day!
There is a whole lot of information in this story to sink your need for a new story into.
This is a great story for most, unless you are like Lucas, then you already know.
Thank you, S.K. Winters, for a great story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest review.

THE BEST MAN, Audiobook - This is a average, disappointing story. The same words/phrases are shared by everyone, curated for example. The story lines are interesting but the writing and the law enforcement knowledge are not up to snuff. There is plenty of psychology, but no suspense; the reader is being told instead of letting the story flow. The characters are okay, but I don't care about them becuase od the writing style. This story needs better editing, too wordy, too much repetition, no individuality. The narration is by Virtual Voice. I'm not sure this was a good choice since the voice did not add to the story. I've listened to narrators that improved the books with their narrations. Source: My Audible library. 3*

This was a mind blowing story. From page one it grabs you and keeps you turning the pages needing to know what’s going to happen. This book was intense to say the least.i was so engrossed in this, i couldn’t put it down. Every twist and turn kept me nose deep in this. I thought i was starting to figure out what was going on, who was being things, but i wasn’t even close. This is a very deep and dark psychological thriller. It has so much depth to it that you feel like you’re on this journey with everyone trying to figure it out. You feel the intensity and chaos. Wrapped up in the suspense. This is a must read for sure. You’re cheating yourself out of an amazing story if you don’t read it.

The Best Man: A Gripping Psychological Thriller of Loyalty and Revenge, my twelfth read from author S.K. Winters. A 381-page domestic thriller. “I received a complementary Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author with The Endgame: A Chloe Reid Thriller, Book 1 high on my TBR list. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

I really wanted to love this one. The story was incredible, however the execution not so much. Too many repetitive dialogue. Several times it felt disjointed. Unexpected quality from S.K. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book provided by booksprout.
