When I meet Shai Burrows, he intrigues me enough that he has me stalking him, following him, watching him.
And when I find out he’s the one who robbed me, instead of handling business, it only makes me obsess over him even more.
But I can’t just let him get away with that, so we cut a deal. Shai will work off what he owes me, with his body, something he’s as eager about as I am. Because after that first touch, our worlds collide.
We get off on danger and seek trouble we’re not supposed to find. He craves my body, and though I don’t understand it, I know I want him by my side.
He’s my obsession, and I can’t help but want more.
In fact, I want it all.
And I’ll take it.
Our world is violent and chaotic. I’ve always reveled in that, but I’m risking it all now. I need to learn control because if I lose him, no one will be able to pull me back from the edge.
Content Warning: Sweet Obsession contains violence, drug use, discussion/memory of losing a parent to suicide (flashback), past scenes of child neglect, addiction (not a main character), discussion of human trafficking, and morally gray characters with no redemption arc. This is still a Riley Hart romance though, so none of this is heavy handed and you can expect a happily ever after for our guys. Please see the next page for a more detailed content warning.
Riley Hart is the girl who wears her heart on her sleeve. She's a hopeless romantic. A lover of sexy stories, passionate men, and writing about all the trouble they can get into together. If she's not writing, you'll probably find her reading.
Riley lives in California with her awesome family, who she is thankful for everyday.
Sweet Obsession is an entertaining romance between loner Shai and slightly psychotic Rory. They have an unusual introduction to one another that sets the stage for their off-kilter dynamic and the overall story. I really appreciated how Shai keeps Rory on his toes. Shai is a strong and independent character who does not put up with any nonsense, which makes Rory instantly drawn to his prickly personality and makes him want to investigate this unusual guy personally.
Overall, this story is highly entertaining, keeping me invested in their unusual dynamic and seeing how the rest of the group reacts to Rory becoming slightly unhinged when it comes to another person and potential love interest created a fantastic element to this story. Overall, it was fun being back in this universe and its characters. Rory and Shai share a unique connection, which makes it highly entertaining.
*** I reviewed a complimentary copy of this story.***
4.5 stars Time for the chaos gremlin, Rory, to get his man. Since the first book Rory's personality stood up: always moving, always diving headlong into violence mayhem and sex. It seemed that he couldn't stop spinning around and it took meeting Shai to finally halt and give his life another purpose. His strong bond with Cillian is another important part of Rory's life and thanks to the prologue of this book, it's finally clear how they got so close: Cillian was the first person to give Rory stability and unconditional love. From the moment they met, Cillian has been his anchor, his ride and die and, above all, the person who never let him down. Their bond is special and it's one of the things that made me love this series so much. I also adored Ollie and Rory's friendship, how Rory could be hilarious, whiny, unashamed and tender at the same time with him.
Shai is a man trying to survive and he's ready to do whatever it takes to keep a roof over his and his mother's heads. Shai is also very attracted to the thrills of danger, he's not scared of doing reckless things and that makes him just the right partner for Rory. They're protective and possessive of each other and even if intimacy and feelings don't come easily for them and their dynamic evolves only around physical needs at first, but when they let go, their bond is unbreakable.
One thing that made me emotional was when Rory started questioning himself about his feelings for Shai: it made me sad that he thought he was incapable of love.
What prevented me from giving five full stars: I didn't mind the sharing scenes between the four of them because they have firm boundaries that everyone respects. But those scenes weren't as emotional as the scene in the second book with Cillian, Ollie and Rory. They didn't give me the same feelings.
This has been a very good series, now it's time to pester Riley Hart to write a book about Rian, Cillian's dad. He exudes very strong and commanding sexual vibes that cannot go wasted.
I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest review.
ARC read 5 ⭐️ 4 🌶️ Read this if you like: College setting, dark romance and mafia MM books
Fav trope: Stalker to Lovers and the debt repayment with 🌶️ favors
Fav character: Rory - he’s been one of my favorites throughout the series! He's a total chaos demon (not literally) who finally meets his match. He’s fiercely protective and obsessed.
Fav part/scene: The initial confrontation during the attempted robbery. The immediate, dark chemistry between them, where Rory is more intrigued by Shai than angry about the crime. This sets the tone for the entire book!!
Unique factor: The Family Dynamic. Even though these men are morally gray and violent, the Found Family aspect with Cillian, Ollie, and the rest of the crew is so heartwarming. Seeing how they fold Shai into their protective circle is beautiful.
Unforgettable moment: The training or work-off debt scenes. The power exchange and the way Rory uses Shai’s debt to keep him close creates electric moments and amazing banter.
Didn’t like: Nothing I loved it!
Recommend it? Yes! Especially if you’ve followed the series. It’s a perfect conclusion for Rory.
Part of a series: Yes, Sins of the Father (Book 3).
"He moves forward, and I willingly take a step back, then another and another, until I fall down to the bed. Shai goes with me, pushing me to my back and straddling my lap, still pressing the gun into me. The fire in him makes my own burn brighter."
Sweet Obsession is book three in the linked standalone Sins of the Father series by Riley Hart, which I am loving. It's a much darker-themed series than Riley's usual work and I am totally here for it!
The books can be read as standalones, but in my view are much better if they are read in sequence, starting with Bittersweet Revenge (my fave of the series so far) because the characters are so closely aligned.
This is Shai and Rory's story.
What To Expect:
🖤MM dark romance 🖤Mafia violence 🖤Revenge 🖤Stalker to lovers 🖤Possessive and obsessive MCs 🖤"Mine" 🖤Morally grey MCs 🖤Touch him and 💀 🖤Found family 🖤First times 🖤All the steam 🖤HEA (no redemption arc)
This book...hell, this entire series, is just incredible. I love this little family so much.
From the moment Rory appeared in Bittersweet Revenge, I was completely intrigued by him, and what his story would be, and by the time I hit the prologue of this book, I was already crying.
This story is dark, but it’s also incredibly sweet. The amount of love, care, and devotion within this found family absolutely wrecked me. They would do absolutely anything for each other.
Rory’s relationships are the heart of this book. His bond with Cillian is stunning. The way Cillian grounds Rory, the quiet understanding between them, the forehead touches that say everything without words…it got me every single time. And when Cil did the same to Shai? I was done for 🥹
Rory and Ollie’s relationship is pure softness. Ollie is Rory’s Bunny, his safe place in a completely different way. Their bond is so gentle and sincere.
But Shai is Rory’s soulmate. No hesitation, no doubt. Two broken, intense people who shouldn’t work on paper, yet fit together perfectly. Watching Shai become someone who could pull Rory back from the edge, when only Cillian had ever been able to do that before, was incredibly powerful.
Rory would do anything for his family...for Shai, and it shows exactly who he is at his core. Beneath everything, he is such a beautiful soul.
The way all four of them come together, emotionally and physically, is about far more than heat. It’s about grounding, connection, and belonging.
And the epilogue was just the perfect ending. Their family is still close, still intense, still unapologetically codependent, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
After reading Cillian and Ollie's book, I knew I had to get my hands on Rory's as soon as I could. He was such a fun side character that I couldn't wait to be inside his head to see what chaos went on in his brain. I may not have been prepared for how truly wild Rory can get, but he was still such a lovable man that you can forgive him.
The bond between Cillian and Rory is so unique. There really isn't an ounce of romantic feelings between them, but there is an intense platonic bond. I wondered how Rory and his new man Shai were going to fit in with the Cillian/Ollie dynamic and I wasn't surprised that Cillian was initially quite wary of of accepting Shai. He's the protector and he needed to make sure that his person and his soulmate were both safe with this new addition to the family.
Getting to know Shai was also a lot of fun. I knew he was going to be a perfect fit not only for Rory, but for the mafia family as well. Shai never gets bothered with Rory's obsession with him. In fact, he revels in it. He hasn't had an easy life so if a man like Rory wants to spoil him and love on him, Shai is going to let him. And he just may lose his own heart in the process as well.
Riley, Riley, Riley….. I am so glad you dove into this world. I enjoyed the whole freakin ride! I have been curious what was going on inside Rory’s mind since Book 1. The way he reacted, why he was the way he was, how he felt looking at Cil and Ollie, who could match him? Shai that is who. A robbery gone right! Cherry and Pet were perfect for eachother! The way they lived and loved in chaos. Rory trying to understand love all the while chasing it and living with it. The aha moment, the model, the care, the chase, the hunt and the relationship with Ollie and Cil was worth the wait. The possessive and obsession these characters felt for eachother fit so well. The way they understood and grounded eachother and the entire dynamic of the entire family is sweet, loving and devoted to eachother made for an amazing “mafia” family series. This series is darker than anything I have read from Riley Hart and I can’t be the only one that is glad she wrote this series. 5 stars all around.
Despite the rough start, I absolutely loved the way Shai and Rory got together. I loved the thrill of chasing each other and the understanding that borne out of sharing one's deepest secrets.
I'm grateful we got to see them learning how to accept help and never stopped being themselves, flaws and all. But my favorite part was, of course, the found family, our mini mob which has grown little by little since Dean join the picture in the first book.
I appreciate Rory as a neuro divergent person and I truly enjoy how everybody who loves him knows how to handle him instead of just letting him become something monstruous. I'm always glad of the bond between Rory and Cillian (and now Ollie and Shai too).
I think both Shai and Rory found each other when they needed it the most. They were lacking something important and after coming to a middle ground, it seemed as they were predestined, their connection so tangible. Their devotion (and obsession) with the other was truly remarkable and beautiful to witness. Plus the intimate scenes and kinks were the cherry on top *chef's kiss*.
I love that Riley gave us a new series with dark themes yet we always got the heart she often portrays in her characters. This undoubtedly goes straight to my favorite books of the year. I fully recommend you to read this one, I know you'll love it as much as I did!
I received an ebook ARC in exchange for my honest review via The Author Agency.
"It might not be the healthiest way to feel, but I don't care. I want to burn in this obsession I feel for him, dance in the sweet ruin we've left behind, because here, in this world we've created, we're better because of each other."
"We're going to fucking do it," he says. "Thank you for bringing me back." "Always. You brought me to life."
This was perfection. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My fav couple from this series, I would easily read 500 more pages of Rory & Shai.
Once again, I really love how they navigated and intertwined each other into their unique foursome. Rory, Cil, Ollie and Shai are just all precious bb angels I could never get sick of.
(Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.)
Calling this a fever dream gives it too much credibility of being lucid. It takes a lot for me to DNF a book and with this one I only made it to 20% before I knew it wasn’t going anywhere for me. The main characters are chaotic and whiny and I felt more turned off by the actions and conversations of the characters than anything.
I will start by saying that in my humble opinion even tho books 2 and 3 can be read as standalones ( do not recommend ) they need to be read in order. More than that, even tho they are part of a three book series due to the emotional implications between the characters from book 2 and 3 these feel like a duet inside of a multi-character series.
Why am I saying that? Because I feel like I couldn't truly love Ollie and Cillian without Shai in the picture. In my review for book 2 I said how I love Ollie and Cil, and while this is still true ( I do love them individually and as a couple ) I did not love them as much as I loved Tiernan and Dean. I needed book 3 to give me that. I needed Rory's POV and I needed Shai to fully solidify that feeling for me.
While the whole "duet" it might seen like Ollie is the glue, I think it is actually Shai. This is maybe just me but this is how I feel. These 4 cannot exist without one another... that's a fact. Their separate relationships would be dysfunctional without the other 2 there to complete the bond. I am not talking se'xualy, I am talking emotionally. They need each other to soothe something in their souls, and while their separate relationships do that, to regulate those emotions once in a while they need that bond to be strengthened.
Rory... oh, Lord, Rory is a gem. He is hands down one of my fav characters of all time. I saw myself in almost every aspect of Rory and I never felt so seen. Hey, maybe one day I will find my Shai and my Cil and Ollie.
Shai is such a beautiful soul and human being, and the way he storms into Rory's life and settles everything is unbelievably sweet. While Rory is a tornado of chaos, Shai's chaos grounds our Ror in a way that no one was able to do it before.
Their bond is absolutely beautiful. It is that kind of bond/love that will exist until the end of time. What these two offer each other is so unique and, as I said, beautiful that words cannot do it justice.
The plot of this book, the way things started, progressed and ended are perfect. They were exactly what Rory needed and deserved. I am glad Riley wrote this book in a similar fashion to book one instead of book 2. Compared with 1 and 3, book 2 fell flat... in retrospect.
I think the reason why book two fell flat for me was Cil. Not because I do not love him, I do, very much so, but he pissed me off to no end with his selfishness. I think I needed book 3 for Rory's pov to fully grasp what I was feeling. He was so selfish when it came to Rory, and tbh our chaos gremlin did not deserve that. His fear of losing Ror was unfounded since Shai never intervened between them. I think Cil was projecting tbh. He kinda left Ror behind when Ollie came into his life and only checked with Ror once in a while while he was preaching to Ol how important Rory is to him... Yeah, no.
The relationship that blooms between these 4 is beautiful, Cil is coming to his senses and Ollie is a sweetheart as always. Please keep in mind that this is NOT a poly relationship... it is more like a soul connection emotionally speaking and a kinda-sorta swinger situation se×ually... even tho not all of them swing. You need to read it to get it.
Because this book had more of a book one vibe it was an automatic 5 star for me. I knew after chapter 1 that I will ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT... and when I finished the book I was right. 5 stars, hands down.
Also, seeing Tiernan and Dean being unapologetically grumpy and moody together will always make me happy so there's that.
I am sad this series is over... very sad tbh. I wish we'd have a second gen... that would be AWESOME.
At the end of the day I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK. DEVOURED IT. GIMME MORE, but I still feel like I have a lot more to say and idk how to express all that I am feeling... maybe on my re-read. I can't wait for the audiobook now ❤️.
It has been a pleasure, O’Shea's... I will miss you. 😢
I've been beyond desperate to get my hands on Rory's story ever since he was introduced in Bittersweet Revenge, and honestly, it didnt disappoint.
As Rory is a chaotic, crazy ball of energy. Who flits from one thing to another at lightning speed. Is always hungry and not just for food. And after seeing his best friend and brother Cillian get well and truly dicked down (Rory's words), he decides he's going to hook up with a guy so he can experience it himself.
Which is how he meets Shai: As Rory arranges a hook-up through an app, only to meet the guy. He gets robbed at gunpoint by Shai. Who has no idea who he is dealing with and is shocked when Rory gets turned on and excited by the robbery. Which isn't what Shai was expecting, and in turn, he too starts to get excited in a way he never imagined. Leaving him desperate to relive the high.
As for Rory, he's determined to find the robber and kill him. That is, until Cillian learns about his boyfriend Oliie's new work friend and asks Rory to check him out. But Rory, being Rory, takes it one step further and starts stalking him. Only to realise that Oliie's new friend is the one who robbed him, leaving the pair on a collision course with fascinating consequences.
Yet, Rory is so intrigued by the gorgeous Shai and the darkness that surrounds him that he decides to have some fun, advising Shai that he can pay him back by having sex with him and generally causing chaos.
However, what starts as payback soon becomes so much more. Yet, Rory is unsure he has the tools to love someone, no matter how hard he wants to.
And I just absolutely adored Rory, from his chaotic nature to the crazy one-liners and his connections to Shai, Cillian and Ollie. As it was so powerful and real. But also vulnerable too, and I was there for every hot, sexy, murderous moment of it, and I would happily recommend this series and story to all.
I'm also really sad this series is over, but the epilogue was the perfect ending, not just for Rory, but for the other guys, too.
My thanks to TAA and Riley Hart for the opportunity to read an early copy of Sweet Obsession. All thoughts expressed are my own.
Rory is used to being in control. In his world of dirty dealings and violent dynamics, every mistake has a price. When he finds out that Shai is the man who robbed him, he should handle it without hesitation. Instead, the attraction he feels for him changes the rules of the game. Rather than punishment, Rory offers a deal. Shai will repay his debt through a personal and dangerously intimate arrangement. What begins as a way to settle the score quickly turns into a mutual obsession, into a bond that goes far beyond simple desire. But in the violent and chaotic world they live in, getting involved is a risk. And Rory knows that if he were to lose Shai, there might be nothing left to keep him from going over the edge.
And just like that, this Riley Hart’s series has come to an end. I truly loved these characters, their dynamics, and their relationships, this messy, chaotic family that found each other against all odds and chose one another. Bringing someone new into an already established group is never easy, but this series proves that families do not have to be connected by blood to grow.
I loved the first two books in the series, and I really enjoy Riley Hart’s writing style. I did feel that this book focused a bit too much on the previous couple. I will not say too much in case you have not read the previous books, but while the previous story centered on Ollie and Cillian, with a bit of Rory, this one spends a lot of time on Rory’s dynamic with the two of them before fully bringing Shai in. It is not an MMMM romance, yet at times it felt slightly overcrowded.
That small detail aside, I loved the series overall. It is definitely something a little different from what Riley usually writes, and I appreciated that. The mafia and violent elements blend perfectly with these characters. Now I really want a book about two certain characters. Let’s see if that ever happens.
Sweet Obsession was everything I wanted for Rory and Shai and exactly what a final book in a series should be. It made me emotional in the best way, but also a little sad because I’m really not ready to let these characters go.
This is fully my brand of slightly unhinged obsession. The tension between Rory and Shai is intense from the start, but underneath all the chaos there’s something genuinely soft. I was hooked the whole time. Their banter, the push and pull, the way the obsession somehow feels safe with each other… it just worked.
Rory is such a big personality. He’s loud, chaotic, says whatever he’s thinking, and I love him for it. But he’s also fiercely loyal and loves so deeply. Seeing him finally find someone who understands him instead of being overwhelmed by him felt so earned. Shai doesn’t try to change him, he grounds him. He knows how to steady Rory when he starts spiraling, and that balance between them felt so right.
Shai’s journey really got to me. He’s had to grow up too fast and carry so much on his own. Watching him slowly find safety, belonging, and people who choose him was honestly one of my favorite parts. Seeing him become part of the family felt natural and really sweet.
The found family aspect made this hit even harder. The dynamic between Rory, Shai, Ollie, and Cillian was so good, and I loved how their bonds felt solid and real. The epilogue especially made everything feel full circle and a little bittersweet.
I really hope we get more from this world because I’m not ready to say goodbye yet. Such a heartfelt and satisfying way to end the series.
This is an obsession to more dark college romance, featuring Rory and Shai, and is book three in the Sins of the Father series.
Rory becomes dangerously obsessed with Shai, the man who robbed him, but instead of seeking revenge, he makes a deal for Shai to work off his debt, igniting something volatile and addictive between them.
This was an addictive read, and was such a chaotic delight. Rory and Shai’s chemistry is explosive, but what really hooked me was their connection, it was raw, messy, slightly violence and full of vulnerable moments.
The obsession between them is so good, and there’s something beautiful about the way Shai becomes Rory’s anchor. There’s just something so captivating about these morally grey men, you can’t help but love them.
Things to expect in this book are: Book 3 in series MM dark romance Check CW Obsession to more Mafia x thief ADHD rep Drug use Stalking Hurt / Comfort MC has red hair Forced proximity Debt arrangement Bi awakening Spicy times & dirty talk All the firsts Primal play Video s*x Biting & share scenes Voyeurism & exhibitionism Breeding & Praise kink Pierced c*ck & nipples MC in lingerie Possessed & admit feelings Kidnapping & rescue Pet names: Cherry & my pet HEA
This book hit me harder than I expected. The characters’ dark pasts—especially Rory’s obsessive and possessive nature—make the story incredibly powerful. The chemistry between Rory and Shai is toxic but honest, and that’s exactly why it’s so addictive. 🔥
The spicy parts are easily the highlight of the book.🌶🥵 The primal energy, the power dynamics🛐, and Rory being written as a clear power bottom are amazing. The dirty talk is exceptionally well done natural, never cringe, perfectly balanced, and incredibly effective. 🫠
I also really loved Riley Hart’s writing style because the plot and spice blend seamlessly. The erotic scenes don’t interrupt the story; instead, they deepen the characters. The flow is smooth, bold, and the dark tone is handled beautifully. 🤞🏻🥵
Obsession, possessiveness, and the chosen family feeling can be felt on every single page.🤌🏼
If you love dark MM romance and aren’t afraid of boundary-pushing dynamics, this book is a perfect hit. 🖤🔥📚
I love Rory but this was actually a very annoying book. Cillian, Ollie, Rory and Shai have this weird thing going on. Author keeps telling us that it’s not MMM or MMMM when everything points to exactly that.
It’s like the author wanted that but at the same time didn’t? Rory and Cillian would’ve been a love story I’d have loved to read about. They’re amazing together.
And I think they both need to break up with their partners and settle down with each other, I’m sorry.
But maybe the idea was to make it not so cliche? But then again, it’s like we are supposed to be here for Shai and Rory but no Cillin and ollie keep sneaking in and then I remember “oh it’s not like that with them”
SPARE MEEEE
I asked myself at one point if the author got confused while writing this because she insists their relationship isn’t like that yet proceeds to write it differently.
Like now I’m confused and lost.
About 75% in, I realised I was skimming instead of reading. That’s when I knew I do not care about anything else that was happening.
Hence the dnf. 😊

This brought me so much joy. I loved Shai with Rory so much! And the way he works with Ollie and Cillian, too. Oh yes, please. I love this group so much. The mini mob is the absolute best. I am so sad to see the series end. It definitely ends really well, though. I love their meet cute, by the way. Absolutely nothing else would have worked for Rory, and this was perfect. I love that Shai is similarly bloodthirsty. I don't want to spoil anything but just read this book. It is the perfect ending to this series.
Sweet Obsession by Riley Hart was my first read from this author, and I ended up DNF’ing around 30%. I want to note that I don’t mind MM romance at all, so that wasn’t the issue here.
The premise had a dark, obsessive tone that sounded interesting, but I couldn’t connect with either of the main characters or feel invested in their relationship. Even though the writing was fine, the emotional connection just wasn’t there for me.
I can see this working for readers who enjoy darker MM romances, but personally, it just didn’t click.
Thank you to Wildfire Marketing Solutions & Riley Hart for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The dynamics in this series really is something so special and rare, I could not put this book down and just devoured it in one sitting 🤭
Rory, which we know from the previous books from this series, is the second half of Cillian. He has an unique and very deeply bond with him, but not romantically. Shai lives a hard life, and when he is forced to do something he actually does not want to do, his path crosses Rory's.
This whole series is amazing, and this one was fantastic as well 💙
Their connection is a bit unusual, but it works so well for them. They are very dear to me know 🤧
I adored this so much! I have really loved this series and this book was a great finish to it. Shai and Rory were both absolutely chaotic and perfect together. And I love how Shai was accepted into their little found family.
I definitely recommend all 3 books in the series if you love morally gray characters who'd do absolutely anything for those they love. 🖤
I love this series so much. Dean & T (book one) are still my faves but Rory and Shai are a very close second. Two chaos demons in love. 🥰 I also loved their whole dynamic with Cil and Ollie (book 2).
We also got a 10 years later epilogue with updates on all the boys. ❤️
I love this series and was so excited for Rory's book. It did not disappoint. Rory and Shai's dynamic is perfect! The way Shai handles Rory and his unhinged self is beautiful. The raw, primal connection was sooo good. The way the whole group eventually accepts Shai and makes him family was beautiful.
Rory and Shai i just have to say are my obsessions, see what I did there? The sex was smoking 🔥 and they were both just enough crazy for me and the found family moments were my everything. Definitely a 6 star read and a 6 star experience. And will definitely be a favorite book of 2026.
It started out being another fun and OTT book that I was reading through so fast and enjoying. Then, like 70% or so, I got so bored. I just stopped caring. Didn’t care about Kat and Jagger. Didn’t need a million explanations about how the foursome felt platonic love that had to be expressed physically through sharing (like share or don’t- I don’t care but we don’t need two books worth of repetitive “we love each other but not like that- this is how we show it)
By the end, I so badly wanted to just skim. But I finished so bumping down to 2 stars
