Discover the remarkable life of Isabella I of Castile...
Isabella I of Castile was one of the most pivotal monarchs in history. For some, such words might ring of hyperbole, but for Isabella, it is simply the truth. Her reign didn't just shape Spain—it reshaped the world. Ascending to power during Spain's final push to reclaim the Iberian Peninsula, Isabella completed the centuries-long Reconquista and unified a fractured kingdom. She accomplished this in an era when women rarely wielded sovereign power. Though she didn't command troops in battle, she personally oversaw strategy, logistics, and troop movements, and even established field hospitals for wounded soldiers—an innovation centuries ahead of its time.
But her legacy extends far beyond Europe's borders. When an Italian navigator named Christopher Columbus sought backing for an audacious westward voyage, Isabella saw what others couldn't. Her decision to sponsor his expedition launched Spain into the Americas and triggered a collision of civilizations that would forever change the course of history.

Very informative. I thought I knew this woman from the Columbus story but even that wasn't out of the goodness of her heart but to help Spain beat Portugal to India! She also instigated the horrific Spanish Inquisition. I went from having a positive view of this woman to having a decidedly negative view of her. I don't blame the book for this. It was mostly well-written though not as good as some Hourly History books I have read hitherto.
I wish that I had read this short history before visiting Spain. It was confusing following her dynasty and the Moorish conquest. I didn’t understand the importance of the thirty years after Columbus’ voyage. The fall of the Byzantine empire, France’s attach on Rome and Naples, and Henry’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon.
Catherine lived in a truly dynamic era. She as equal to the challenges that arose in those times, and even initiated some of them. (Think Columbus.) This book provides a sketchy outline of her life and accomplishments, but it is adequate.
Very concise quick reading history of Isabella and her impact on history of Spain. Excellent for young readers to make history comprehensible and enjoyable
