Green Witch Cycle #2
An Uncertain Magic
Not yet published
Expected 27 Oct 26To save the city, Brooklyn’s most chaotic coven takes on the gods (yes, the gods) in An Uncertain Magic, the second book in AM Kvita’s award winning Green Witch Cycle. No big deal.
Joan Greenwood has been adjusting nicely to her life away from her powerful family of witches. She has an apartment full of friends, her dream job at an architecture firm, and a constant companion in the sentient magic that makes up New York City. For once, everything’s coming up Joan.
Until her best friend gets possessed.
There’s a god wearing his skin, a new cult springing up around him, magic is going haywire, and things go from bad to worse when Joan’s rival-turned-crush Astoria Wardwell arrives from California with the news that her best friend is also possessed. That’s one hell of a coincidence, and the strange dreams they share just might hold the key to saving their best friends before these gods corrupt them. Unless their pesky feelings for each other get in the way.

"Gods," Grace said. "What did you do to her?"
Joan had absolutely no idea. "At worst, flirted very lightly, I think."*
An Uncertain Magic follows the original crew two years after the first book, and everything is seemingly swell for Joan. However, not only Joan's best friend, but her confusing crush-rival-friend's best friend are possessed by gods, and Joan and
A major difference is that we get Astoria's perspective throughout basically half of the novel, and I personally don't know if this helped or hurt the story. Her upbringing was another version of Joan's (terrible parent), and she didn't grow in the way Joan does with her (Joan's) parents. I personally didn't find it to add more to the story emotionally; Astoria's perspective just moved the action plot forward. Speaking of action and plot, these elements were the forefront of this sequel. While there were fun quips amongst the group of friends sprinkled throughout, it was no longer a core of the story.
Joan and Astoria's relationship progresses from what their relationship was in the first book, but it also sadly didn't do much for me. I really wish I was more emotionally invested because I thought where they ended in An Unlikely Coven was unique, and I appreciated it. This was something I was really looking forward to. However, their moments together didn't move me, and I think I have to blame the action that overtook the novel. Everything I enjoyed about the first novel had to sadly take a backseat because of the plot.
The action-heavy plot was something I was ill prepared for. I think throwing in gods in an already convoluted fantastical world did not work for me personally. Fae, vampires, etc. I can kind of see living in the same world. Greek (but seemingly not explicitly stated it's based on Greek mythology) gods don't logically fit in that world. If the gods were original, I could have enjoyed the story more. However, these two aspects didn't mesh well together in my mind.
I really hope A.M. Kvita writes a cozy fantasy. I want them to write something with much lower stakes. I love the friendship dynamics they're able to weave, and their humor is so up my alley. The Green Witch Cycle is sadly getting a little too ambitious for my liking, and I won't be picking up the third book. However, I will keep an eye out for this author in the future.
Thank you NetGalley and Orbit Books for an eARC in exchange for an honest review!

"An Uncertain Magic" is a masterclass in sequels.
Safe to say that we all know how difficult it is to make a second book live up to the expectations of the first one, especially if said book was an award-winning masterpiece!
After waiting anxiously to see where Joan and Astoria’s dynamic would go after the first book, A.M. Kvita delivered an absolute rollercoaster that shattered my heart in the best way possible. Set two years after the events of An Unlikely Coven, this book is tightly packed with non-stop action, deep mythological lore, and a dual-POV structure that makes the narrative incredibly engaging and impossible to put down.
The romance in this installment is a breathtaking, high-stakes slow-burn. The evolution of Astoria’s character is easily one of the sweetest and most profound aspects of the book. Watching her grow from her past fixation on Wren into a mature, independent woman capable of choosing, loving, and being loved by Joan was deeply moving. But you'll have to read it yourself to find out all the details!
However, tragedy and mythology interweave brilliantly with their romance. Kvita beautifully incorporates Greek mythology through shared dreamscapes that parallel their bond to a past love story. From someone who studied and loved Greek mythology so deeply, I can say it was a delightful addition. It somehow crowned an already amazing plot. The worldbuilding expands massively, introducing new creatures, while reinforcing the "found family" tropes that made the first book so special. I truly loved seeing more of Mik since they are hilarious and caring at the same time, keeping together this little unlikely coven.
The bittersweet, agonizingly suspended ending left me completely broken. I am already dying to get my hands on book three. A phenomenal, satisfying, and haunting sequel. If you loved the first book, you'll definitely love this one too!

An Uncertain Magic, book 2 in the Green Witch Cycle, does not disappoint. It delivers the same energy and wonder as Book 1. Our FMC, Joan has been comfortable staying away from the drama of her powerful coven family in New York City working in an architectural firm and living the exciting life of a Brooklynite. However, when her best friend is possessed by some ancient mythological gods, she is lured back into the world of magic before it is too late for her friend.
When Joan discovers that her rival, Astoria’s best friend has also become possessed by a menacing force, they team up to not only save their friends but also save NYC from the impending danger.
The story is part cozy fantasy, mystery, and romance woven into the urban setting, and who doesn’t love an urban fantasy witch story? I appreciate a departure from the typical fantasy/witch storyline set in the woods or during a far off past. In addition to a twist on the classic supernatural witch family story, we have a sapphic, rivals to lovers trope which adds a layered development of the characters (especially to the Joan’s character) with a bonus romance story line. I enjoyed both character and the way that Kvita provides dual perspectives lets the reader into their emotions and thinking - we get to know the characters better.
The writing is seamless and engaging and the dialogue is witty and with just enough banter between Joan and Astoria to keep me on my toes. The description of the gods and the possession of young women is so interesting and engaging
This novel is pure delight in all the important ways and is sure to engage lovers of fantasy and found family themes.

Having not read the previous book in the series, I came to this book unattached to the main characters … and while they grew on me, I think a lot of the emotional beats missed me by dint of much of the buildup — especially of the will they/won’t they romance between Joan and Astoria — had been done without me. The friendships, the foes, the pressures of witch society are all well laid out, and the plotting is strong, which is a good thing as this book is mostly plot driven.
The introduction of gods attacking witches and other magical creatures feels discordant, as though the mythologies don’t quite align. While it makes sense that the witches, descendants of Circe, would have some ties to other Greek gods … the suddenness of it, the fact that no one seemed to have any idea left me flat footed. It’s one thing to have things be a surprise for the characters, but I feel like I would have, myself, like a bit more setup. (And maybe that setup was done in the first book, but I didn’t read it.)
The rapport between the friend group is … fine. I liked CZ and Abel’s moment, but I just didn’t feel the chemistry between Astoria and Joan. The book sets it up well, but with everyone’s voice sounding so very similar to everyone else’s … it just fell flat for me. It can be hard, with such a large cast of characters, to give everyone a unique voice, but this book failed at it, in my opinion. Even New York, the city, just sounded indifferent.
All in all, probably a better book for people who have read book one, or people who enjoy this author’s writing. Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the ARC.

I enjoyed the first book, An Unlikely Coven , and was pleasantly surprised to find that I liked this one even more!
There is much more worldbuilding in this book, giving us a better understanding of both new and returning characters and creatures. I especially enjoyed seeing modern, urban magic interwoven with mythology, which added a greater sense of richness and weight to the story.
While there are still plenty of cozy elements, this story doesn’t shy away from brutal and thrilling battles, bittersweet sacrifices, tragic losses, and other elements reminiscent of heroic tragedies. These darker moments are balanced by lighthearted and tender scenes between Joan and her friends, which were probably my favorite part of the book. While we saw glimpses of this dynamic in An Unlikely Coven , we really get to see them come together as a family and a team in this one.
I found myself smiling and laughing out loud at the scenes where they lovingly bicker with one another while simultaneously trying to save each other and the world in the most chaotic and courageous ways possible. I especially enjoyed seeing more of Mik’s personality as part of this unlikely coven facing uncertain magic and increasingly dangerous challenges.
The book was well-paced, and the conclusion has left me on the edge of my seat, eagerly waiting for the third book!

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this and oh my goodness I LOVED it. After absolutely adoring the first book, An Unlikely Coven, I was a teeny bit worried (as we often are!) maybe the next book in the series wouldn't hold up. I was so thrilled to find that it absolutely did! I read this in under 24hrs, I couldn't put it down. The dual POV was really interesting and it was really cool to learn more about the backstories of other characters.
The direction of the story is so interesting and the ending has me desperate for the next book in the series. Once again, there's this fantastic balance between fun and light-hearted while also tackling serious and important topics with respect. The diversity in the book, throughout the characters etc is also beautifully done because it just feels so normal and genuine, not forced. The queer, sapphic, non-binary, POC representation is the absolute best to see/read.
This series has become one of my absolute favourites and my only complaint is I have to now wait for the next one because the ending, OMG!
Just like the first in the series, this book is absolutely a 5⭐️ read for me and one I have been and will be recommending to as many people as possible!

After absolutely ADORING book 1, I was so excited to receive an ARC of book 2 from the author that I had to jump in immediately!
And I’m so glad I did… reading this book was like coming home 🥹 to my favourite Found Family of all time, to my favourite Queen of Chaos FMC, to my favourite sassy, sentient city.
The blossoming relationship between Joan and Astoria is so bloody wholesome, and isn’t Joan every single one of us when we’ve had a crush on someone? 😆
At the end of the day, Astoria’s worst crime toward Joan had been breaking her heart. And Joan found that very forgivable, because she was pathetic and because Astoria was alone now.
I think my favourite part of this book though was getting to see more of Mik’s personality. They might have even taken over from Joan as my number 1 (Booooooo!) seriously, their one-liners are top top tier 😘🤌🏻
“Can we summon her?” Mik said. “I can procure a Ouija board. Or is it like, rude?”
If you love cosy fantasy, banter for days, queer & bipoc representation and elite level found family, I could not recommend this series more!

First thank you Netgalley and Orbit Books for this advanced copy of "An Uncertain Magic" by AM Kvita; Publishing October 27th, 2025.
This book was so much fun; a perfect follow up to book 1. If you enjoyed the first book, this is a must read. I love these characters so much. Once again Kvita weaves a story with this incredibly diverse group of characters that has you literally on the edge of your seat from page one with action from jump. The gang is at it again getting mixed up in crazy magic messes. This time it's not just a cult, it's GODS!
The yearning between Joan and Astoria this book is SWOONWORTHY 😍. I'm rooting for them so hard after that cliffhanger. I'm going to need book 3 immediately, these two have to get a happy ending.
The only negative thing I have to say at all was the pacing was a little inconsistent. But it didn't effect the crave worthy plot. I was locked in from chapter 1, it just felt like the book ended a bit abruptly.

Cry Rating: Level 0 (no tears)
My Thoughts:
I was really excited for this one as An Unlikely Coven was one of my top reads last year. And as fantastic as it was to be back with this found family of queer magical beings, the plot of this one kinda lost me. Reading the acknowledgements I learned this is more of book 1 for the series whereas An Unlikely Coven was just a bonus prequel for some background. And maybe that’s the problem. Maybe I really enjoyed reading about this rag tag crew before the gods got involved. Because honestly the whole god plotline kinda lost me despite my deep love for these characters. The slowburn between Joan and Astoria is everything and I deeply need to see it come to fruition so for that reason I will probably be picking up book 3!

Ahhhh this book was so much fun! I loved book 1 and so was so excited to get an arc for book 2 - after a bit of a confusing start (maybe my fault not rereading book 1) this was such a breath of fresh air!
It's warm and cosy with the most delightful found family, absolutely phenomenal queer and bipoc representation, and yet the plot is there plotting as well!! The sass and the snark and the banter are all absolutely on point, and it's such a fun and different magic system which makes it so great to explore!!
There were times where the plot lost me, but I was having a great time with the characters so it didn't bother me that much! If you're a fan of a slow burn, then this is absolutely for you - it was so wonderfully done!

This book series might have my most favorite group of found family friends. They are so adorable fighting the good fight. I really enjoyed both Joan and Astoria POV and their journey trying to save their loved one’s. That ending was just wow and I need the next book in the series ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was happy to be back in Astoria and Joan’s world again even if it took me a bit to remember the events of the first book. Poor Joan and Astoria, they lose their friends to possessions of gods, and they must work with their friends to stop what’s going on before it’s too late for everyone. This is a non-stop, action-filled, fun ride, and I think the dynamic duo is so darn cute together. They are mostly opposite and really complement each other so very well. I was worried as we reached the conclusion, and then the epilogue came…now I really want to read the next installment. This reads almost like a NA novel, which I’m not fond of, but this is still a great series. Give it a try! Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Started this remembering nothing of the characters or what happened in book 1 (really woulda loved a recap), ended it thoroughly in my feels. Joan & Astoria are just ♥
