Honestly, it was the cover and my love of desserts that drew me in. This book highlights the importance of what joy and delight desserts can bring us and does it in a fun way. I enjoyed learning about them and the history that's sprinkled in because Borsato felt like a tour guide that was taking me around the world while sharing the history and recommending some locations to try them from. I also enjoyed the author's writing style and its very accessible. The illustrations added a fun touch and originality because it's not your typical photoshoot for the food. One of my favorite desserts and story was the Cannoli one and it was crazy for me to learn that a bouncer has to be used for a cupcake shop in Manhattan due to it's popularity. At the end there's a log book to keep track of the decadent desserts you've tried that's mentioned in this book. Overall, this an enjoyable and interesting book on sweets.
This is not the book to flip through when you are hungry! So many wonderful desserts, with beautiful illustrations, jump out at you and beg to be eaten. I was lucky to grow up in a very international urban area so I’ve tried many of these but, as Borsato points out, these “are not too difficult to find and are affordable for most of us” There were some favorites (halo halo, babka, pavlova, mille feuilles), some intriguing (maple syrup pie, charcoal ice cream), and some I’ve been dying to try but haven’t had a chance (souffle pancakes, sticky toffee pudding). There are also some new to me with such mouthwatering descriptions that I have moved them up my list to find. Fortunately, there’s a handy list in the back to help me with my quest.

Super cute illustrated book highlighting the intricacies of trendy and timeless desserts. Diane Borsato does a great job discussing the desserts and the descriptions are beautifully paired with gorgeous artist depictions of the desserts in discussion. The additional checklist with ample spacing for including your own experience is a nice touch. Thank-you, Chronicle Books and Diane Borsato, for this complimentary copy. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
