This story is about a girl who seems to have a stalker. There's a creepy guy who always stares at her at the coffee shop, she's gotten weird letters in the mail, and she and her roommate get random prank calls in the middle of the night. Not to mention that part of the story is told in the form of journal entries written by the stalker (it's kind of a dead giveaway).
The story starts just before the stalking escalates to violence, and it moves pretty quickly, which is the one thing I didn't like about it. I didn't get a chance to feel connected to the characters because I was trying to figure out "whodunit." I would also really love to see more from the view of the stalker, just something to give us a deeper look into his motives or something.
What this story did super right was making me suspect pretty much everyone, and still catching me off guard at the end. It helped that I was never able to peg the stalker for sure in my mind.
Overall I give this story 4 out of 5 stars. It would definitely make for a great quick read for your lunch break.
Are you ready for a creepy and bone chilling crazy ride? Do you love stalker stories? Then this book is for you!
Kaila Montgomery is young, in college and lives with her best friend. Everything is perfect in her world until one day she receives a package that is not only disturbing, but spins her perfect world upside down.
From that moment on nothing is what it seems and she is watching her back at every turn. Will she figure out how to save herself from this demented stalker before it is too late?
WOW! S.L. Dearing has once again brought us a story that keeps you on your toes til the very end. I was definitely creeped out to the very core of my being. It is a story that will haunt you every night when you are alone!!!
I was given a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.
First of all, damn. I did NOT expect the ending. I love it when stories throw me off! It was a bad idea to read this before going to bed... I actually had to get entirely under the blanket while I was reading it, because I was a bit freaked out.
There are some issues with the editing, both with grammar and content, that took me out of the story a few times.
I know it was a short story, but I still wish it were longer. Just a bit! I'd have liked a little more detail.
Creepy and mystery laden, Affliction is a well-written short story with surprises and twists at each turn. Dearing does a masterful job of working the infamous red herring, while taking the reader on a nicely detailed but terrifying journey.
P.S. You'll want to double check that you've locked your doors and windows after reading.
I downloaded Affliction as a free novella from Amazon. Very nice. Love when a story surprises me, and this had a great twist in the end. Clean writing, tight plot, and perfect ending. Well done.
Kaila Montgomery has a stalker. There's a creepy guy who always stares at her at the coffee shop, she's gotten weird letters in the mail, and she and her roommate get random prank calls in the middle of the night.
But she has upset the deranged guy and he does something that will get her attention and sends her a gift (that was super creepy, but I knew what was in the box straight away).
There were a few suspects but I didn’t work it out (even though I thought I had). Great ending! One of Dearings best shorts I've read so far.
Wow. Just wow. This short story will have you guessing the entire time, who is the stalker? Is it one of the characters we think, or someone completely different?
Kaila is just your normal college student. But she starts getting weird letters and phone calls, then a mystery package shows up. I'm not going to say more about that though.
This is a suspenseful read. Just when you think you know who the stalker is, you'll read a reason to think it's someone else. The ending was unexpected for me. This is a great read!
