As the second book in the Ambrosia Chronicles, The Initiation packs a punch of information and moves the story along at a pace that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Alex must learn to control her powers now that she knows who (and what) she is. She and Ian go on the run, trying to protect Alex and her newly acquired status, while Alex learns to deal with all of this new information about herself. Also, Regina is brought into the story – she is the one that gave Lucas his powers. Alex feels something towards Lucas, but she is with Ian and tries to concentrate on that.

This second book contains so much storyline and information that it does not fall flat. The writing was more detailed and informative, but there was less world building within this story which left room for the story to grow. I enjoyed the pairing of Alex and Ian, but could not help but root for Lucas the more I read. I can’t wait to see where the end of this story goes in the last book in the series.

In The Initiation Simos’ lead, Alex, is suddenly on the run after she’s accepted the role she’s been given. The fantasy element is much more present now that Alex is enveloped in an adventure she doesn’t have a lot of control over. The second novel is fast-paced and the writing is brilliant, particularly for a YA novel. Alex becomes even more complex, and the questions she starts to face are many. What I enjoyed was that Alex didn’t fit into a trope, she didn’t fit into a box that often YA characters get drawn into. She was multi-layered and realistic, dimensional and intelligent. There wasn’t a time where I wasn’t able to see Alex as a real person. Simos has a way of writing her characters on multiple levels that is sometimes subtle and really refreshing.

I love this series. This book is SO much better than the first one. I didn't want it to end! I can't wait for book 3 now. I want to know what Eric is sooo badly!
