In a city filled with vampires where none are allowed to drink from a living source one thing is blood.
Lives are broken or made on that one, mystical substance—something Adrienne Valois knows all too well. Revered in Oylen’s black market as “the jewel of the Souzterain” Adrienne is all too aware the second most important thing in this world is beauty. And hers is a siren call to powerful blood drinkers.
Adrienne finds herself trapped between two immortals who vie for her attention—one a patron of the blood den she works and the other the oldest vampire in the world, Lord Eamon Azad. Though she believes Eamon merely wants what runs in her veins, nothing could be further from the truth. But after years witnessing the darker side to Oylen’s vampire elite, trusting the promises of a mysterious ancient immortal feels as dangerous as placing her palm over a flame.
Oh how I’ve missed Gillian’s super passionate writing with men who YEARN!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥
I loved this! These stories will forever fill that void of reading a quick read but with actual substance and great writing!! It makes you feel like this isn’t a shorter story and you consume so much more!!!
I will DEVOUR a vampire story and Eamon & Adrienne’s story absolutely HITS! I freaking loved Adrienne’s back story and honestly if you don’t fall head over heels with Eamon, somethings not clicking 😂😂 **he’s actually perfect**
I really loved the timing of everything, while also incorporating characters from book 1. Even though they’re interconnected standalones I Definitely recommend reading Book 1 so you really fall in love with this group of characters 💙
We have such a great balance of world building, romance, action and spice for a shorter read!
If you are looking for a quick vampire story that checks off ALL the boxes, you absolutely should read this 🎶💙
I've never read a book with more yearning. I don't say that lightly.
Vampires are outlawed from drinking human blood... so black market blood dens have operated in secret... giving vampires a taste of what they crave most...
Our female main character works for one of these blood dens... and finds herself trapped between two immortals who want her...
One... a patron of the blood den she works for...
The other... the oldest vampire in the world... Eamon Azad...
She believes the only thing Eamon wants is what runs through her veins... but nothing could be further from the truth...
This book is so romantic and dark and gothic it reminds me of the video game Bloodborne.
This story has so much worship and reverence it will give you goosebumps.
The spice took my breath away. The spice had me panting. The spice had me setting the book down just to process what I had just read.
The pining, the yearning, the longing, it's almost unbearable in the best way possible.
Nobody obsesses like a vampire.
"I wanted to know what it would feel like to hold her in my arms, to be so close to that light. If I burned, I would take the fire every time."
I'm telling you... I literally felt like I was under some sort of vampire hypnotism here. I couldn't put this book down. I was screaming at the romance.
I don't know how to get my point across enough that this is the most romantic series ever.
These vampires are down BAD and it is our absolute pleasure to watch them suffer and fixate and ultimately devour these female main characters...
If could ever jump into a book and start living a character’s life... I'd be diving headfirst into this one.
Also... I just have to put it out there... there is a chase... in a forest... you're welcome in advance.
I'm obsessed with this world, I'm obsessed with these characters. The found family you discover here will literally fill any cracks in your heart that are currently present.
I've never read a book that explores one's personal journey through worthiness more intimately than this one.
"You are not a thing to be bought or sold. You are the light itself that shines at dawn, that grows the flowers and the grass. So incredibly vital."
You will not finish this book with dry eyes, I can tell you that.
Every character you meet... you'll be like I'm in love... and then you'll meet someone else and you'll go... wait... I'm in love again.
Can this be read as a standalone? Yes. Should you read this as a standalone. NO. No. Don't. You Dare.
Each book follows a different couple, but a much larger story is at play here too. You need to read every book and meet every couple intimately.
And I'll just say that what is still to come from this series... has me so excited I think I might pass out... so please... join me on this journey.
𝓤𝓝𝓣𝓘𝓛 𝓣𝓗𝓔 𝓜𝓔𝓛𝓞𝓓𝓨 𝓔𝓝𝓓𝓢 is a forbidden vampire romance between a blood giver and the oldest vampire in the world. This is book two in an interconnected series, you can read this as a stand alone, but highly recommended to read book one first!
In a city filled with vampires, where none are allowed to drink from a living source, one thing is king: blood.
I did not read Until the Heart stops, but I do plan to go back to it before the next release. I definitely recommend it if you want a stronger connection to the decisions those characters make in this one. Overall though, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I do wish it was longer though. There is so much in this world that 280 pages just feels so short. I’m hoping as the series goes on we get more of that world.
This story follows Adrienne and man does she have a rough past. Born from a mother who is abusive, manipulative, and only cares about two things: money and herself. Adrienne was raised for the life of a giver and that life alone. You really start to understand the war she is fighting in her mind. Torn between two immortals, one a patron of the den she works for, the other one of the oldest immortals alive. She wants to give in and to trust, but she is plagued with her mother’s scarring words.
I’m usually not a fan of miscommunication, I’ll admit sometimes I just really wanted to slap these two, but as Adrienne’s past comes to light you start to understand it. There was so much yearning, so much care, and the other characters love and friendship made this haunted world feel almost alluring.

5/5 ☆ i’m a sucker for the paranormal, yearning/pining, and any sort of fated mates scenario. this book had all three, so naturally, i’m obsessed. witch x vampire with a gothic feel… SOLD! and the writing style was great ☁️ so moody and hopelessly romantic ughhh i loved. the world building and atmosphere within the book was also so impressive, especially considering that it’s a relatively short book (~250 pgs).
some plot points were a bit difficult for me to follow, but i’d attribute that to me not having read the first book in the series. definitely want to go back and read book one before coming back to this for a reread!
huge thank you to west for sending me an advanced copy. the goodies were so lovely. gorgeous art <3 happy release day! (all thoughts are my own!)
Thank you to the author for this advanced copy! I loved this book! Anyone who knows me knows I love a vampire romance and this one didn’t disappoint. It was spicy and I loved the slow burn and tension. I loved the MMC’s yearning and the FMC’s trauma! This book made my chest hurt with emotions. Read this if you like a soft FMC, a green flag MMC, and lots of emotional damage.

Review: There is yearning, and then there is YEARNING. Eamon Azad is a YEARNER of the highest caliber. I knew from the snippets we got of Eamon and Adrienne in Until the Heart Stops that this book was going to hurt, and boy did Gillian deliver. Eamon is the sweetest most beautiful gentle vampire soul I ever did meet. Not only in his love and devotion to Adrienne, but also to Jules and Lilith, and then Callum, Mateo, Henry, and Gabrielle. Hes fascinated by Adrienne at first and as their relationship develops and his feelings deepen to the point where their mate bond is invoked his only priority is her. Making sure that she feels safe, cared for, and supported in every single sense of the word. Adrienne has a lot of trauma to work through during this book. She was basically raised as chattel by her mother to provide for their family and to the vampires who would be enticed by her beauty. Her mother builds this insecurity that she is only good for what she can provide and when she can no longer provide that she will be tossed away like trash. Eamon does everything in his power to help heal her wounds but they take time and he’s not going anywhere. We watch her push him away out of fear and when she finally lets him in she feels the weight of his devotion like an armor settling over her skin. I just love this world and this family so much, and I’m really excited to continue this series. We got to see a lot more of the side characters and we got the perfect set up for the next book. While I’m super excited for that one I want to linger in this and savor everything that Eamon and Adrienne are. Also we got primal play, coffin sex, and literal bodice ripping. Like what else could you want in a vampire book?
Thank you so much Gillian for an early copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The second book in this series is spectacular. I recommend reading the first book, Until the Heart Stops, to really sink you teeth into this story! A 4.5 star read!
Adrienne navigates the undercurrents of vampire society where beauty is as coveted as blood. Working as a giver in hopes to save her family from destitute. She catches the eyes of the quiet Lord Eamon and is made an offer that she can't refuse. Fighting the tension between them, she is determined to keep him at arm's length. However, her heart takes a different path.
Eamon, is bewitched by the beauty that is Adrienne. Torn between claiming her and allowing her to live her life as a giver, he will take whatever he can get. Even if it means denying his own happiness.
I DEVOURED this book in 2 days! I couldn't put it down. Just when I thought I knew how the story was going to end, the last few chapters had me on the edge of my seat! The yearning in this book is fantastic! Eamon has my heart.
Gillian writes yearning so good that you don't want to story to end, giving us a refreshing twist on classic vampires. I can't wait to read the next book!
Thank you so much again for the opportunity to read an eARC, all opinions are my own.
I fear Gillian has outdone herself on the “men who yearn” front (and that’s saying a lot because I loved the Infernis duology). I’ve been so excited to learn more about Eamon and Adrienne’s story and this definitely delivered. While not necessary to understand their individual story, you should definitely read ‘Until the Heart Stops’ for the full effect.
Adrienne really went through it to get her HEA, and there is no one she deserves more than Eamon. That immortal man ADORED her and would happily burn the world down if it made Adrienne happy. Learning more about what lead up to the events from UTHS & being able to see it from an alternative perspective kept things refreshing whilst also expanding on the context we have from the first book.
All of this to say, I cannot wait to read more in this universe 👀
vampire books are my faveee!! this was such a fun read! i loved how it got me hooked and it wasn’t even that long! adrienne is soo lovable and eamon was perfect! he reminded me of elijah mikaelson!! and adrienne reminded me kinds of caroline hehe!! i loved the world and characters in this story! i kinda want more!! i will definitely be reading more vampire books now!!
this is book two in the oylen city series!! this was fast paced and a perfect book if you love vampires and angst and fun vibes!! this book is for the lovers of paranormal romance, vampires, yearning, jealousy and my favorite trope “who did this to you?”
tropes: 🜲 paranormal romance 🜲 vampires 🜲 yearning 🜲 jealousy 🜲 “who did this to you?” MY FAVORITE
We got to meet our MCs in book one of the Oylen City series and this story did not disappoint.
Adrienne has been a blood giver her whole life. Taught to please her patrons from a young age and withstand the trauma of the similar lifestyle that her mother lived. That is until she meets a a vampire like no other, Eamon. Eamon is ancient, patient, and possesses the qualities of a vampire that Adrienne never sees.
Needless to say, Eamon spends every waking moment earning her love, trust and fighting any human, vampire or lycan that gets in his way of his woman.
If you are a fan of vampires and Romantasy, and are looking for your next fun read to breeze through, this needs to be on your TBR!
The yearning, the romance, the dark gothic vibes… I ate this one up!
I will mention that the main reason this wasn’t a 4 star for was mainly my fault. I feel like it would have been a lot more immersive for me if I had read the first book of this series prior to starting this one, since this really dove into the world and characters without much background. So although it can be read as a standalone, I HIGHLY recommend reading book 1!
So I did not read the first book…and honestly it made this a confusing read. It’s definitely one that will read a lot better if read in order. But with that being said, I really enjoyed the characters, they were very well written with beautiful description. And the world building was excellent. That alone made this a wonderful story so I’m going to go back and read the first one and I’ll vine back to update.
THE QUEEN OF YEARNING IS BACK!! Trust me, if you can’t find true love, devotion, and desire in the real world, just look between the pages of a book by Gillian Eliza West.
- vampires - a “hunt” - yearning - trauma - fated mates - the importance of choice
Overall, this was 2.5 stars for me. It was good, but not as good at book 1, which I rated as 4 stars.
Alright, first comment that is important for readers to know is that this book (book 2 in the series) took place before, during, and after book 1. Most of this book took place before book 1, a few chapters occurred during the same time as book 1, and then a little took place after. The author noted at the beginning of this book that this book was a standalone in an intertwined series and could be enjoyed independently, no matter if you had read book 1 or not; yet, she also noted that this book would likely be better if you had read book 1. I agree, as the side characters and storyline made so much more sense due to the overlap with book 1. However, what I thought was done poorly and made me super confused was the overlap in timeline.
I first noticed this with the side character Mateo. He was a big side character in book 1 and again a main side character in this book. As noted, most of this second book took place BEFORE book 1. Based on what was written in book 1, which occurred after Lilith’s mother’s death, Mateo and Lilith (the MFC from book 1) met for the first time and discussed what they could call each other (page 67 of the kindle version of book 1). Earlier in book 1 there was a comment that Lilith may know Mateo, but then later they had this formal greeting where they were introduced to each other. This was SUPER confusing to me because here in book 2, we learned that Mateo was in love with Lilith’s mother and Mateo was always attending 1) Eamon’s parties that Lilith attended with her mother twice a year and 2) events with Lilith’s mother, as well as Mateo was at Lilith’s mother’s funeral after she died. You are telling me Lilith never met Mateo until after her mother’s death (as indicated in book 1), but all these events in book 2 show them in the same crowd, repeatedly, AND her mother and Mateo had a deep friendship? What?
As I looked back in book 1 for some clarity, when Mateo was being flirty with Lilith to anger Callum, Lilith thought Mateo looked sad and was grieving. Mateo had commented to Lilith that he could see why someone would be fascinated with her. This was just a passing comment that meant nothing at that time, but this book showed us that Mateo had loved her mother and now her mother was dead, both the thought and comment made so much more sense.
I felt that way about Henry and other characters, as book 1 really showed us that Lilith did not meet these vampires until Callum showed interest in her. However, here in book 2, again took place before book 1, Lilith was around these vampires and her bestie Adrienne knew them. Therefore, I was left wondering what was happening and wished the author took a bit more time to flesh this out and take more time clarifying the timeline. Maybe it will be easier for others to understand and this confusion is just me, but I just did not get it. I have read other books where timelines overlap in different books and have not felt confusion.
Moving on. I really loved Mateo in book 1, so I was happy that he was included in this book. I enjoyed obtaining more detail about him. We learned about his love for a human and why it was not reciprocated. We got more character depth to him, which was fantastic and devastating.
Since much of this book occurred before book 1, we received more detail about Lilith’s mother, how she ran her business, and her relationships with Noah, Lilith, and Adrienne. We also learned more about how Noah, Lilith, and Adrienne became close friends. These details were a great addition to the story.
Since some of the book occurred after book 1, we were given a little bit of information about Lilith and how she was functioning as a vampire.
The pacing in this book was slow and a bit boring for me. I wonder that, because I read book 1 and already knew that Adrienne would become exclusive with Eamon, all the build up to her saying yes was lack luster. It was kind of like reading the end of the book and knowing what would happen so it was not as interesting. It was not until after the events of book 1 was I more interested, which unfortunately was the end of the book. The end of the book, so the last 15%, the pacing picked up and I was hooked.
The yearning in this book was strong and my heart broke for our MMC. He was such a kind, patient, thoughtful vampire. He fell fast and hard; yet, the MFC was not ready. The MFC was highly traumatized throughout her childhood and given a ton of messages from her mother growing up about how bad vampires were, specifically they would use her and let her go eventually. Those messages given to her as a child became deep rooted and were reaffirmed repeatedly by her mother now that she was an adult. The MFC believed every word her mother said. I had a lot of empathy for our MFC, and probably would have thought the same thing if I were a human living in a vampire’s world. Although the MMC was incredibly different than every other vampire, due to how vampires generally treated humans and her trauma history, believing the MMC’s words and actions right away was not something she could comprehend. The MFC’s hesitation made sense and the author did a great job explaining that. Also, the MFC’s hesitation created great tension and the MMC had to work for it.
Unfortunately, the MFC did not have the growth I had been hoping for. Now, she did grow in this book, quite substantially, but it was not because she did the work or challenged herself. She was so stuck in her rigid thinking because of her trauma with her mother that she kept the MMC at a distance for almost the whole book. She was avoidant, kept him at an arms length, and refused to allow their relationship to grow. Eventually, she had an emotional tantrum at him, gaslighting that he was the problem when in reality SHE was the problem. The MFC had zero insight that her current predicament with the MMC was due to HER choices and actions. Due to her complete lack of insight, she became emotionally labile and lashed out, again gaslighting him. The MMC became so fed up with her constantly denying how he felt that he forced a blood bond between them so that she could genuinely see and feel what he was feeling. THIS was the ONLY reason she believed him. Only at this point did she start to trust that what he had been verbally telling her was true.
So, although I was delighted that she was shown that he really did love her, and that her mistrust was unfounded, it was not because she did any of the work. She essentially was just forcefully handed on the silver platter the truth because she was so blinded by her trauma. This was a huge let down for me. I wanted HER to do the work. I wanted her to feel empowered to question herself, challenge her trauma, and take a chance with the MMC because the MMC had been so stable and kind in her life. I wanted her to try and be vulnerable with the MMC. I wanted her to take control of her own life.
Don’t get me wrong, stories that include an MC only starting to change and grow after they meet a stable partner are excellent, but those stories are about the MC developing insight and being ready to grow themselves. Yes the stable foundation from a partner was needed for that, but the character still does the work. This book felt like the man just “fixed” her and she never actually had to put in effort to better herself for herself. Even after he forced her to feel how he felt, she had zero reflection and insight development. She just knew how he felt and said alright. Also, I was hoping to see her own her behavior towards the MMC and apologize for how she treated and gaslit him. Nope. NONE of that happened. I will say there was brief reflection later when she was kidnapped about how her saying no to fully bonding with the MMC due to her fear was a mistake and she wished she had done things differently. But that was maybe one paragraph and only due to active trauma, not because she wanted to better herself. I was bummed.

Until the Melody Ends by Until the Melody Ends, provided directly from the author, is genuinely one of the most emotionally consuming vampire romances I’ve ever read.
I truly do not say this lightly when I say I have never read a book with more yearning than this one.
The emotional tension woven throughout this story is absolutely unreal.
Set in a world where vampires are forbidden from drinking human blood while black market blood dens secretly operate beneath the surface, the atmosphere immediately feels dark, dangerous, addictive, and emotionally immersive.
Adrienne works within one of these blood dens and quickly finds herself caught between two immortals who both want her for very different reasons.
And then there’s Eamon Azad.
The oldest vampire in the world.
Ancient, mysterious, dangerous, obsessive, and emotionally devastating in the best possible way.
One of the strongest aspects of this book is the emotional reverence and worship woven into the romance. Every interaction between the characters feels layered with longing, restraint, obsession, vulnerability, and emotional intimacy that honestly becomes overwhelming at times in the best way possible.
The yearning throughout this story is almost unbearable.
Not only does the romance feel emotionally intense, but the gothic atmosphere and darker fantasy elements make the entire world feel hauntingly immersive. It honestly gave me strong Bloodborne-style gothic fantasy vibes throughout the story.
I also loved how deeply this series explores themes surrounding worthiness, identity, emotional vulnerability, desire, and devotion. There are so many emotionally raw moments throughout the story that genuinely stayed with me long after finishing the book.
And the spice?
Absolutely unforgettable.
The emotional and physical tension between the characters builds in a way that makes every scene feel emotionally charged, intimate, and consuming.
This is also absolutely the type of series where every book should be read in order because there’s such a large interconnected emotional and world-building story unfolding underneath each individual romance.
Every character feels important. Every relationship carries emotional weight. And every book adds another layer to the larger story unfolding throughout the series.
Overall, Until the Melody Ends is a breathtakingly emotional gothic vampire romance filled with obsession, yearning, dangerous immortals, emotional devotion, haunting atmosphere, unforgettable tension, and one of the most emotionally intense romances I’ve read in a very long time.

Another home run for West… not sure what she puts in these books but I absolutely adore her writing. 🤷🏼♀️ I’ve loved everything she’s written, and this was no exception.
Let’s get one thing straight… this woman can write a man who YEARNS. Her MMCs are top tier, serious green flags who have perfected the art of yearning so well it makes you ache. I knew from book 1 (Lilith and Callum) that Eamon and Adrienne’s story would be one of soul deep love that lasts, and West delivered.
Adrienne has a lot of healing to do, her childhood shaped by grueling lessons with one goal: you are only as good as what you can provide, and she has spent her life providing blood to vampires with enough coin. So when sweet Eamon falls hard for her and realizes she is his blood mate, Adrienne cannot let herself believe his feelings are true. Paralyzed by her fear he will tire of her and leave her, as her mother was left over and over again, she does her best to push him away and keep him at a distance. But our Eamon does not give up so easily, and he endeavors to use their very long slow burn courtship to prove to his love that he is not going anywhere.
This was the epitome of slow burn, but when they *finally* come together, the sparks explode. The last 30% of the book was delicious heat and heart pounding action, and quiet reminders their love endures.
I loved seeing Adrienne’s growth throughout, I wanted so badly for her to see the truth in Eamon’s feelings. I am absolutely feral for another of West’s MMCs, sweet Eamon who envelopes everyone he cares about in his warm embrace, and loves unabashedly and with his whole being. My heart broke for both of them at different times, but they were such a great pair and the romance in this book is top tier. The larger world/plot is important and progresses beyond book 1, but this story was definitely romance forward.
I cannot wait for book 3, the teaser from this story making me more than excited to see that play out. And loved seeing beloved characters from book 1 move forward in their own stories… dare I say another potential couple is emerging between a certain venefica hunter and a lonely vampire…. 😏🤗
I’ll devour anything West writes, and can’t wait for more of this world!!
This was such an amazing book! And I loved every page from start to finish! Literally I think I could gab about this book for hours because I loved the drama, the romance, the characters, the banter! Just everything about this book had me hooked! Adrienne and Eamon were absolutely phenomenal characters that I just couldn’t get enough of! Adrienne is blood giver who has been raised since a young age to be docile, know her place, and not to make waves so that she can earn a decent living and help her family… but one fateful night when one of her patrons takes her to a high class party she meets the ancient immortal everyone can’t stop talking about… Lord Azad. A man she finds herself instantly drawn to but knows she can never fit into his world. And if she does catch his interest it’s only going to lead to heartache. Fate has a funny way of making things work out though, because just as Adrienne is drawn to Eamon, Eamon finds himself immediately drawn to her, not just drawn to her but infatuated, protective, possessive, feelings he’s never had for anyone in his long immortal life. But he sees that Adrienne is fearful of what fate has in store for them and he is willing to be endlessly patient with her. And omg does it make for just the sweetest, slow burn, romance that’ll have you hollering at these characters to just kiss already! It’s not all just sunshine and rainbows though as there’s darkness in the city… and sometimes the ones that are meant to protect you are the ones who you should never trust. If you’re looking for something with a bit of Bridgerton vibes, vampires, witches, a sweet, slow burn romance, filled with amazing characters, tons of banter, just the right touch of spice, and plenty of moments that’ll leave you guessing what’s going to happen next then I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Until the Melody Ends today!
Thank you so much for the opportunity to have read an ARC copy of this book!
First and foremost, thank you so much to Gillian Eliza West for the ARC of Until The Melody Ends, the next book in her paranormal romantasy interconnected standalone series!
Full disclosure: I went in completely blind, and that’s on me—I fully believe this one would’ve read completely different if I had context from the first book. Some of the character dynamics and world-building felt like it was carrying weight I hadn’t earned yet as a reader, and I’ll 100% own the disconnect I sometimes felt as being my own dang fault.
Until The Melody Ends is a romance-heavy vampire story centered on Eamon (one of the oldest vampires, like ever) and his fated mate/he human woman he longs for, Adrienne. If you’re here for the love story, the vibes are angsty low stakes with a LOOOOOTTA yearning (love!) 🙂↕️ Think swoony spicy vs suspenseful.
The only thing that gave me pause was how quickly the romance moved. These two honestly moved faster than I could connect with, and the pull between them was sometimes hard to feel the way I wanted to. Adrienne has a really interesting thread about feeling used, and the world building is solid—I just wish the tension had more room to breathe before the second act (time jump).
I think readers who come in with the foundation of book one will have a much richer experience than I did. For me, this was a yearning-filled read that I’d recommend to low-stakes romantasy lovers—just maybe do as I say and not as I do, and start at the beginning of the series 😅

Eamon, the most ancient immortal (and incredibly romantic), lived through the great Purging. Now, his only desire: He wants Adrienne attention, her affection, and most of all her love. ❣️
Adrienne was groomed from a tender age to serve as a Blood Giver🩸. But she is fearful of those vampires🧛♂️ and so, creating deep and profound bond is nearly impossible. But her heart disagrees and is yearning for that connection.
I truly enjoy a good vampire story, I love a yearning spicy🌶 romance, I need an exciting plot, and I crave character growth. Did I feel content within these 282 pages? Yes but partly. In my humble opinion, I feel cheated out of an epic saga.
The story line is excellent👌 but far too complicated to plume down in such limited words. I want more, so much more. More details, more emotions, more world building, more destroying edgy moments. I want to feel the pain as if it was my own. I want to stop breathing from one line to another. I want frissons, lots of them.
I am, without a doubt, so grateful for this passionate fable. The author did an awesome job giving life to these characters and making us love them😍. I’m forever attached to all the persons in this novel. Her writing is poetic and filled with care and tenderness. Thank you Gillian for sharing this incredible story with us. Trust me when I say…I am eagerly looking forward to book 3.
Do I recommend ‘’Until the melody end’’ 🤔? Hell yeah😆! It’s worth your time.
Thank you to the author for an ARC. I want to start by saying I did not read book 1 as I was told this could be read as a standalone.
Unfortunately, this one fell well short of my expectations despite a promising premise. My biggest issue was with Adrienne. For the majority of the book, she exists as a passive observer in her own story — shaped entirely by her mother's cruelty, never acting on her own desires or instincts. She remained frustratingly inert for so long that I found it difficult to stay invested in her journey. Eamon, too, left me underwhelmed. His decision to give Adrienne space, while understandable, translated on the page into an extended stretch of miscommunication and longing that felt more exhausting than romantic. For a vampire love interest, he lacked the magnetism the role demands. Taken together, the pacing suffers. The story feels stretched thin across its runtime, and by the final act I had lost my emotional connection to both characters. A tighter edit and a more active heroine could have made this something special — the bones of a good story are there. The only part that I felt anything was when I read about the relationship between Lilith’s mom and Mateo. That was heartbreaking. I found I cared more about their relationship than the main Adrienne and Eamon. As it stands, though, this one just wasn't for me.
This author is bringing back chivalry and yearning. This is like Bridgerton, but throw in the supernatural. Adrienne is a witch who works as a giver, someone who provides blood to vampires for payment. She was taught her whole life that she is what she offers and that it’s only a matter of time that she’ll be discarded for something better. But here walks in Eamon, the embodiment of a gentleman despite being a vampire. SWOON. He’s determined to be patient and take whatever she gives in hopes that she’ll one day believe in his feelings for her and go all in.
This is book 2 in interconnected standalones, but after reading the synopsis for book 1, I feel I may have enjoyed the book more if I had read Lilith and Callum’s story first. I think their story is along the same timeline as Adrienne and Eamon’s so I think the story would have felt more lush.
I do feel like some plots weren’t fully closed out and left us hanging. Maybe to leave room for a book of their own? Like
I received this eARC from the author and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Because boy oh boy is Eamon Azad reporting for duty!!! 🫡
This is the second book in her interconnected standalone Oylen City series (the first is Until The Heart Stops), and it’s honestly one of my favorite things Gillian has ever written 🥹
If you like: 🩸Forbidden romance 🩸Vampire x Human 🩸YEARNING 🩸SO MUCH YEARNING 🩸Literal bodice ripping 🩸Found family 🩸Moody gothic vibes in a city full of ancient vampires, witches, demons, and humans 🩸A hot, ancient, and rich MMC who has to fight hard to be with the woman he loves 🩸An FMC coming into her own after a lifetime of measuring her worth by what others could take from her
…then I think you’ll love this one!
I first read Until the Melody Ends on a flight while it was still titled “Eamon & Adrienne - Draft 2,” and while it wasn’t the first time I’ve cried in United Economy, it was certainly the most memorable 😭
I’m constantly in awe of Gillian’s talent: at her world building, the emotion she brings out of her characters, her V̶A̶M̶P̶I̶R̶E̶S̶ ̶ MEN WHO YEARN, and above all, the way she manages to write the 𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 books that never fail to bring me to tears but stitch my heart back together by the end.
This one felt deeper than the first book. more emotional weight, more character development, but just like before, I couldn't help wishing it was longer. There was so much more to explore and I would've happily stayed in this world a little while longer.
I really enjoy Gillian's writing style, it's so good. It has this lyrical, almost poetic quality and the way she writes yearning?? Yeah, it's actually unfair. You will fall in love with her MMCs... scratch that → honestly, all of her characters.
Adrienne carried so much trauma and watching her slowly heal and come to terms with the bond was incredibly rewarding. That emotional journey? Beautiful.
I also really enjoyed seeing Addie and Eamon's backstory unfold and eventually line up with the ending of book one. It was such a satisfying way to connect the two stories.
I would mention though, this is book 2 in the Oylen City series. It can be read as a standalone, but to fully appreciate the story and all the little connections, I'd definitely recommend reading book 1 first. Some moments will just hit harder and make a lot more sense that way.😊
I'll preface this by saying I'm usually not huge on stories with vampires, but this was so well written and engaging, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this one! Our MMC, Eamon, is an ancient vampire, but he's a bit of a golden retriever for our FMC, a witch named Adrienne who is also a giver, or someone who is hired to give blood to other vampires. And when I tell you he yearns, I mean he YEEEEAAARNS. And when the spice happens, oh, it is good. Like bodice ripping good. Like, and not just a saying. Like actual, literal bodice ripping. 🥵
Adrienne's past and upbringing has definitely caused her to have some trauma in a lot of aspects in her life, which cause her to continue to push Eamon away - and that makes the eventual 'giving in' so much better!
This is a standalone in an interconnected world with some definite Bridgerton vibes, and while I didn't get a chance to read the first one, it isn't exactly necessary. Yes, I would have had a better understand of some of the side characters, I still read and understood and loved this one (I do plan to read the first one though!)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ eerie, dark, gothic vampire romance 🌶️🌶️ Pub Day: May 8th, 2026 Pages: 282 Book 2 in the Oylen City Series
Thank you so much Gillian Eliza West for the gifted eARC. This is my honest, voluntary review.
I highly recommend reading book 1 in this series prior to reading this standalone book in the series. That being said, this story was eerie, dark and everything I love about gothic romances. The beginning was sultry and created the vibe for the entire rest of the book.
I found the story well done and I was able to track despite jumping in to book 2 without having yet read the first book in the series. NOTE the ANGST was high with this book.
The beautiful way Gillian writes will always be engrained in my mind. I want to grab the audiobooks for an immersive experience as well because those audiobooks look really good. I bet they'll make for an amazing experience.
I would read whatever Gillian writes because typically I like to read a book series in order and she got me so engrained in this world that I want to learn more.
ARC review The second book in the Oylen City series is a prequel and sets of one year before the events of the first book. The story follows Adrienne a beautiful blood giver and witch who tries to navigate the dangerous world of Oylen City. Adrienne works at a blood den that is run by Lilith's mother. Everything changes when she catches the eye of Eamon, a powerful ancient vampire. Gillian continues to build the rich world of Oylen City. She expands the lore of the vampires, witches and the Covenant. I loved the gothic setting of the balls and the blood dens. I liked Adrienne as a FMC, she is beautiful, talented and resilient. She also has a vulnerable side and with that her character is well balanced. The book contains a delicious slow burn. Their connection is instant and intense but the journey to lovers had quite some obstacles. To me the first half of the book had a slight drag with some repetitive scenes and some other scenes in the book felt a bit rushed. Luckily this does not deter from the story.
I was lucky enough to receive a ARC of this book and I’m so glad I did!
I already knew going into it that I would love this book because Adrienne and Eamon stole my heart in Until the Heart Stops. This book did not disappoint! It met all my high expectations! The ANGST!! 🔥🔥 The YEARNING!! 🔥🔥 I LOVED it 🤌🏻🤌🏻 Eamon is a sweet cinnamon roll who is down bad for Adrienne. Adrienne has feelings for Eamon, but she’s scared of getting her heart crushed so she tries to hide how she truly feels. But she’s secretly down bad for Eamon (I don’t blame her—I would be too).
I don’t want to give any spoilers but their love story was really beautiful, and I enjoyed reading this book! It also was nice to see more Lilith and Callum (from Until the Heart Stops). And we got to see more of Seth too. I find Seth very interesting so I loved that. There’s a sneak peek for the next book in the series at the end and it’s so good 💖💖💖
This was a really quick and easy read. There’s a lot of side characters so at some points I had to go back and just make sure I was thinking of the right person, but I would definitely look into reading future books based on any of the main said characters.
Eamon was a very enjoyable MMC. He was patient and a top tier yearner. Adrienne was very cautious but strong willed character. I will say that a lot of this book sped pretty quickly through conflicts, which sometimes is nice when you want a quick read, however a lot of this book revolved around on how Adrienne’s mother effects her life but the very ending I don’t think we have any closer on where her family is at all.
This was definitely an interesting read and great palate cleanser if you’re in a slump or in between books and want something that’ll hold your attention and can revisit the series at any time.
Thank you so much to Gillian Eliza West for the ARC of Until the Melody Ends! This review is based on an advanced reader copy.
I loved this book from beginning to end. The emotional pacing was one of the strongest parts for me — every reveal, relationship shift, and emotional moment happened at exactly the right time, which made the story incredibly easy to get invested in. Nothing felt rushed, but it also never dragged. The tension and payoff were balanced so well.
And Eamon… absolutely perfect. Protective, emotionally layered, intense without losing his softness … he completely stole the show for me. The chemistry and emotional connection felt genuine and addictive in a way that made me want to keep reading “just one more chapter” until suddenly I was flying through the book… literally read it in one night!!!
I cannot wait to read the next one, I already know Seth is going to be everything.
