A troubled artist and a lone-wolf writer uncover a need for connection in this swoon-worthy romance from New York Times–bestselling author Carolyn Brown.
Jillian Williams, a Texan artist specializing in oil paintings, doesn’t have time for romance. She has three more pieces to complete ahead of her upcoming gallery show, and besides, she’s perfectly happy in the company of her cat, Molly. Unable to afford any distractions, she escapes to a cabin in the remote town of Wamba. It’s the perfect, tranquil setting to get some real work done—until the quiet forest backdrop is disrupted by country songs blaring out of a nearby truck’s speakers.
Wyatt Creswell is a bestselling mystery author who does his best work while listening to loud music. Accompanied by his dog, Rascal, he has less than a month to finish his latest novel. It’s crunch time to say the least, but his flow keeps getting disrupted by a certain haughty neighbor asking him to turn the volume down. He wishes he could just write her off, but there’s a haunting quality in her eyes that he can’t shake. It draws him in, bringing him back to her doorstep each passing day.
Soon, what started as a hostile standoff turns into something akin to domestic bliss. With every shared meal and nature walk, the two break down each other’s walls, learning to trust again for the first time in a long while. But their stays in Wamba were only ever meant to be temporary. Their real lives are calling, their deadlines closing in. As Jillian and Wyatt get swept back up in the hustle and bustle of city life, however, their work begins to feel uninspired. Will they finally come to realize what they truly need is to let someone else in?
Hi! I'm twenty five years old and movie star gorgeous. The camera added thirty plus years and a few wrinkles. Can't trust those cameras or mirrors either. Along with bathroom scales they are notorious liars! Honestly, I am the mother of three fantastic grown children who've made me laugh and given me more story ideas than I could ever write. My husband, Charles, is my strongest supporter and my best friend. He's even willing to eat fast food and help with the laundry while I finish one more chapter! Life is good and I am blessed!
Reading has been a passion since I was five years old and figured out those were words on book pages. As soon as my chubby little fingers found they could put words on a Big Chief tablet with a fat pencil, I was on my way. Writing joined reading in my list of passions. I will read anything from the back of the Cheerio's box to Faulkner and love every bit of it. In addition to reading I enjoy cooking, my family and the ocean. I love the Florida beaches. Listening to the ocean waves puts my writing brain into high gear.
I love writing romance because it's about emotions and relationships. Human nature hasn't changed a bit since Eve coveted the fruit in the Garden of Eden. Settings change. Plots change. Names change. Times change. But love is love and men and women have been falling in and out of it forever. Romance is about emotions: love, hate, anger, laughter... all of it. If I can make you laugh until your sides ache or grab a tissue then I've touched your emotions and accomplished what every writer sets out to do.
I got serious about writing when my third child was born and had her days and nights mixed up. I had to stay up all night anyway and it was very quiet so I invested in a spiral back notebook and sharpened a few pencils. The story that emerged has never sold but it's brought in enough rejection slips to put the Redwood Forest on the endangered list. In 1997 Kensington bought two books for their Precious Gems line. Two years and six books later the line died with only four of those books seeing publication. But by then Avalon had bought a book and another, and another. Ten years later the list has grown to thirty nine. Last year Sourcebooks bought the Lucky Series which is in the bookstores now. They've also bought The Honky Tonk Series which will debut with I LOVE THIS BAR in June and will be followed by HELL, YEAH, MY GIVE A DAMN'S BUSTED, and HONKY TONK CHRISTMAS.
Folks ask me where I get my ideas. Three kids, fifteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Note: I was a very young grandmother! Life is a zoo around here when they all come home. In one Sunday afternoon there's enough ideas to keep me writing for years and years. Seriously, ideas pop up at the craziest times. When one sinks its roots into my mind, I have no choice but to write the story. And while I'm writing the characters peek over my shoulder and make sure I'm telling it right and not exaggerating too much. Pesky little devils, they are!
I have a wonderful agent, Erin Niumata, who continues to work magic and sell my work. I'm very lucky to have her and my editors who continue to believe in me.
Thank you Podium and Carolyn Brown for an ALC copy of Paint Me Happy.
This book is about an author and an artist who book a stay in a remote location with the goal of accomplishing their work. The two main characters couldn’t be more different in their work styles if they tried. The FMC likes early mornings and quiet and the MMC enjoys working late into the night with music blasting. The FMC is a total cat lady and the MMC is a dog dad.
These two need to figure out how to coincide with each other as new neighbors in a remote area.
Overall, I thought the book was good. It is quick but that is to be expected with a novella. It definitely has some of the sweet southern charm mixed into the writing as well!
Paint Me Happy by Carolyn Brown was the perfect palette cleanser I needed after finishing a string of reads with heavier themes. At just under three hours, this audiobook is short and sweet, and I honestly loved that it didn’t feel like it dragged out or became overly repetitive.
Sometimes a romance story simply doesn’t need to be over 400 pages to be impactful. As a standalone novella, you don't need to read any of the author's other works to jump right in—you can just dive into the small-town charm! I also really enjoyed the narration by Brittany Pressley. I recognized her voice instantly because she also narrated one of my favorite books ever, The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston. Having listened to so many of her other projects, I can confidently say she is a pro at capturing a wide range of emotions and male voices, all while staying perfectly clear even when I listen at increased speeds.
The story follows Jillian, a painter with an adorably aloof cat named Molly, and Wyatt, a bestselling mystery writer with an equally lovable dog named Rascal. While the story insisted that these two were drastically different opposites, I couldn’t help but laugh a little. As two artists under the same creative umbrella, I thought that they have way more in common than they think! The tension between them—starting as a hostile neighborly standoff over loud music and evolving into something much sweeter—was a delight. This is an easy, fast-paced read that is exactly what I was looking for. If you need a light, refreshing listen that doesn't take a huge time commitment, I definitely recommend giving this one a try. Perfect for fans of: ✨️ Cozy small-town romances 🎨 Painter FMC 📝 Writer MMC 🐾 Cute dogs and cats 🥰 Forced proximity ❤️ Standalone short stories
Thank you to Podium Entertainment for the advance reader copy of this book. I am choosing to write this review voluntarily and these are my honest opinions.
Thanks, @PodiumEntertainment and @carolynbrownbooks for the ALC.
Jillian Williams needs to finish her oil paintings for her next showing, so she escapes to a cabin in the small and remote town of Wamba, TX, hoping for peace and quiet. Well, she's greeted by a neighbor blasting music so loud it can shake the earth... Annoyed and distressed, she marches to confront the culprit.
The person who opens the door is Wyatt Cresswell, bestselling mystery writer with a deadline around his neck, who basically had the same idea as Jillian about seclusion - but with eardrum shattering music. He wasn't expecting neighbors, let alone the beautiful woman with the haunting eyes.
Soon they are sharing coffees, dinner and talks on the porch and her cat and her dog become friends while they become lovers. And the words start flowing for Wyatt and the drawings for Jillian. Maybe all they needed was a muse...
This short novella is around three hours of audio but out delivers a satisfying story with fleshed out characters, especially Jillian, who unexpectedly starts facing some trauma from her childhood spent in foster care.
It is narrated solo style by Brittany Pressley, who does an amazing job in such a short audiobook. Her Texan drawl added an extra bonus that puts us right there in the small Texan town with these characters.
What you get: neighbors, a confrontational meet cute, forced proximity, adorable pets, finding your muse and a heartwarming HEA.
Note: this is a closed door romance
Content notes (included but not limited to): the FMC has had a traumatic childhood (loss of parents - drugs) and lived in foster care. There are mentions of child neglect and of SA of minor (not the FMC)
Two artist, one creates story's with words and one with paintings, and a cabin in the woods. What could happen... Jillian Williams need some time away from the city to finish her masterpieces for an upcoming show she was having. The tranquility of a cabin in the woods of Texas in a small rural area was just what she needed. So along with her cat Molly, she ventures to this isolated cabin to create. But what she finds when she gets there is not the quiet and tranquility that she needs. But a grumpy writer, his dog and loud music.
Wyatt Creswell is on a deadline to finish his latest book and he needs his rock music to find his muse, along with his four legged companion Rascal the dog. When a banging on his door disturbs his peace and asked him to lower the music, he can't believe that she will take over his days and nights and become his muse and will become more important than any of his best sellers. And what they will both find in these cabins in the woods is a more than words and paintings but a passion and learning more about themselves and what each can bring to a happiness that neither has ever found before. I knew from the first page that this was going to be another hit for Carolyn Brown. It's her gift for taking two people who are so opposite but have no much in common that they can't help but end up liking each other and finding things that they never thought they could have. Another masterpiece for Carolyn Brown. A quick read filled with passion, friendship and a happy ever after.
🎨📚 ALC Review | Paint Me Happy by Carolyn Brown Release Day: 5/5/2026
Jillian and Wyatt escape to a quiet rural town to focus on looming creative deadlines, but forced proximity quickly turns their peaceful retreat into something neither of them expected.
This was a short, sweet love story with an absolutely cute storyline. The opening, especially how they meet gave me Emily Henry’s Beach Read vibes, and I was hooked right away. If you’ve read that one, I think you’ll catch it too. What starts as annoyance slowly shifts into cozy moments, shared routines, and soft, healing conversations that felt both tender and earned.
The audiobook narration was fantastic! @brittpressley nailed the voices and brought the characters to life perfectly.
If you love forced proximity, creative main characters, and quiet small town romance, add this to your TBR.
Thank you @podiumentertainment and @carolynbrownbooks for the ALC 🤍
Super cute! I’ve been really enjoying my time with Carolyn’s romances lately; this is my second from her and both have been fun, quick love stories that you can just gobble up.
This reminded me a bit of Beach Read by Emily Henry! Having two artists (author MMC and painter FMC) staying in neighboring cabins while they try to finish their current project and fight their growing feelings is such a fun concept that I just can’t get enough of.
I’d definitely recommend this!

This charming novella was a delightful listen from start to finish. I adored how Jillian, an artist, and Wyatt, a writer, initially clashed but couldn't deny their growing attraction. Both renting cabins right next to each other while working on their projects, they soon found their friendship blossoming into something more. Even Wyatt’s dog and Jillian’s cat hit it off. It’s a short, sweet love story filled with adorable moments and a captivating storyline.
The narration by @Brittpressley, one of my favorite voices, was exceptional, bringing the characters to life with unique accents and adding depth and authenticity that truly immersed me.
If you're in the mood for a quick, heartfelt love story that brightens your day, this one will definitely do the trick.
ALC review of Paint Me Happy by Carolyn Brown, narrated by Brittany Pressley
Jillian and Wyatt are both creative people who have rented cabins in order to work on their projects. Jillian is a painter and Wyatt is a writer. They quickly become acquaintances, friends, and then more. This book is super cute and cozy.
Often I comment that the super short novellas don’t give enough time for the characters to feel like there is any real connection for me. However, this book actually let me feel the opposite. Like spending all your time for a few weeks together without other people could, in fact, lead to intense emotions and connection a lot faster.
The narration was done really well and I enjoyed Brittany’s storytelling a lot. I’ll need to look up some other books she’s worked on in the future.
This was a perfect palette cleanser of a story. It had all the cozy, sweet vibes I needed after reading a few dark romances.
This story follows a painter and a writer who both book solo cabin retreats to focus on their work, only to end up renting neighboring cabins, which naturally leads to an early clash when someone’s music is a little too loud. I really enjoyed their interactions as they started getting to know each other. They’re complete opposites, with her being more of a daytime, cat-person type and him being a night owl and dog dad, and that made their dynamic really fun to watch.
It felt like a story about finding love when you’re not looking for it and learning to let people in. Overall, this was a quick, easy audiobook if you’re in the mood for something light, cozy, and heartwarming
Thank you podium entertainment for the opportunity to listen to this.
We have the two main characters Wyatt & Jillian. He is a popular mystery novel author and she is a painter. They both decide to rent a cabin in the woods. Wyatt has to finish is book and he likes to blast music to help him focus. Julianne was to paint but needs peace. On their first interaction they clash because of his music. He then finds himself being intrigued by her and she becomes his muse lol. It is forced proximity, so I did like that about the story.
The narration was good, however sometimes her male voice would throw me off. It can just be a me thing, i do prefer a dual narration.
A short and spicy and sweet forced proximity romance. Both an author, his loud music, and his dog and an artist, her paint and her cat rent a house for a solo retreat only to find that they are now roommates. Not only do they get to rediscover themselves—why they love what they do, but it’s a bonus that they share that with someone who understands. Brittany Pressley narrates…she brings every piece of this to life. Just an overall delicious treat of a book. Thanks to Podium Entertainment for the free audiobook.
Thank you to Podium for allowing me the opportunity to have an advanced audiobook!
This is such a cute quick story about two people who were not expecting to meet someone and fall in love! They were definitely opposites at the beginning quickly became friends. I love the use of the animals in the story that love for their pets The narration was great with the southern accent. I laughed, it was a funny, nice little happily ever after! Love the animals featured throughout the book! The narration was great! The accents really helped elevate the setting and storyline!
I received the ALC of this book from Podium. It is a fade to black, forced proximity, MF contemporary novella. The story is super cute and sweet and it was a fun book. The characters are both introverts and creatives who take a vacation in a cabin in the woods to work on their art forms in peace. Only to cross each others’ paths and open up new sides and futures for both of them. The narrator did a fantastic job and was extraordinarily talented.
Jillian and Wyatt’s initial meeting was absolutely not love at first sight. I’d hardly even call it a meet-cute! It is amazing what letting walls down can do and the amount of time it can do it in. This is such a refreshing read. It’s a gentle reminder to step outside of your comfort to find what “paints you happy.” I ate this ALC up! It was so refreshing to have a a book to listen to in under 3 hours.
This was a cute short read and it’s a fast burn as you meet a writer and a painter who meet with a not so great first impression but it quickly becomes more. This is a sweet little love story and a good pallet clensor. The author @Carolynbrownbooks and narrator @brittpressley did such an amazing job here. Thank you @Podium Entertainment for producing this and sharing this book with me.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is an average romance story. The narration of the audiobook was good. The story was sweet, but there wasn't much unique about it or that kept me interested throughout and kept me wanting to keep reading. The characters were sweet and lovable and it was fairly short (main reasons I am giving it 3 stars).
This is a Very mixed emotional read. Life full of struggles, that fine true happiness that is deserved by these two characters. Good narrative without the use of repetitiveness. I have read many books by this author and I love her style. Natural , clean, and realistic writing. Enjoy this read.....
I'm so use to reading about cowboys with ranches and all that entails from Carolyn. This was a total surprise! A very lovely surprise.. I love the characters and the different backgrounds they came from. Thank you Carolyn for another great read.. I have most of your books and reread them all the time.. Thank you again.. Maggi Deibel
Carolyn Brown never disappoints. Even when a book begins on the down side, you know she is going to dig her way out of it. There is just nothing for it, if her name is on the author line, I’m reading every word, every page, and smiling when I read the most hated words in any good book, The End. Loved this one. Heres to many more🥂🥰
This book was one I can relate to, I'm a want to be story writer, a sometimes artist and a somewhat gifted crafter who pours everything into what ever I am creating at the moment which often leaves me feeling so tired I can barely move. I loved this story and what a great ending!
Highly recommend this delightful read!! As always, characters you will fall in love with, the fun of seeing the relationship of two opposites build and develop will keep you smiling and sighing at the end! Enjoy
Whenever the world gets too dark and intense I pick up a Carolyn Brown book to change the scenery. Reading one of her books is like taking a long drive down a winding road with the radio blaring your favorite play list.
Jillian had an explosive meeting but a sweet and tender new beginning. I loved the fact that the author used the title in the beginning ok as country song. These two were made for each other. Highly recommend.
Carolyn Brown knows how to write a fulfilling story. She is masterful in human psychology, portraits relationships with such positivity. I am a long time fan, never tired of her sassy stories. She never drags on just to fill pages. Just right.
