Couldn't put it down!

Essex…that man! Lakia wouldn't let me put this one down. You really see soft love all throughout this book. Yes, there's trauma, there's pain, there's healing, laughter, and a grumpy man that doesn't want nothing but his work and his dog...at first. Until Nariyah shows up. Her son is acting out because his dad is worthless and his life has been upeneded, but when he literally crashes into Essex's property he gets the guidance he needs - albeit a little harsh at first. Essex gets the vapors from Nariyah and decides for her and Nash, he'll do anything. Y'all, Essex was Mr. Make It Happen. That man stepped, and stepped correct when it concerned Nariyah and Nash, and after all he endured, he deserved a chance for pure happiness. There were so many ain’t ish people in this book. Nariyah’s ex and his parents, Essex’s parents, but Mrs. Nina. Mr. Jordan, and Ms. Candace more than made up for the peasants. This was such a good read that I really enjoyed. I've valued my sleep so much lately but I couldn't stop reading until I got to the end, it’s 2am🫣Happy Reading Y'all!💋

I liked the story and the characters. I just feel like the chemistry leading up to the initial sex scene wasn’t there so then it made it really hard to feel anything between them moving forward. However, Essex was an amazing man. He really care for those he love and I’m happy Nariyah get to experience love from a thuuug.

First, please check the trigger warnings because Victoria’s storyline is heavy. Like… heavy. Once I got through that, I was locked in.

Essex? Whew. That man stepped up in a way that did something to me. The way he handled Nash after the car situation and decided he was not about to let that boy spiral? I loved that. The structure. The mentorship. Making him write that essay and work off what he owed. That bond between Essex and Nash felt real and intentional. I ate that up every single time they were on the page together.

And can we talk about how Elise, Rashawn, Nina, and Jordan held Essex down through everything? Grief. False accusations. Depression. Isolation. They never switched up. That kind of loyalty matters.

Now here’s my little pause. I liked Essex and Nariyah as individuals. I did. But I wanted to see them fall. I needed more tension. More flirting. More moments that made me feel it building. It felt like we were told they were in love instead of watching it unfold. And I wanted that.

I did appreciate that Nariyah wasn’t insecure about Victoria and even supported Essex with the foundation and car show. That maturity was refreshing. And Lambo? That fur baby was on assignment and I loved it.

Overall this was a solid read. Emotional but not overwhelming. The couple handled things like grown people, which I respect. I just wanted a little more on page romance development to push it over the edge for me. (4.25/5)

While I see why those who love it, loved it- but this was missing a key ingredient to me. As someone who loves a glow up and stepdaddy romance, I was excited about this story. The beginning captured my attention, Myron was the absolute worse- so I was anticipating the MMC coming in and loving all over her.

Pay attention to the trigger warnings: because the storyline involving Victoria is heavy. So having gotten through all of that, I was ready for the meet cue. And it was perfect. And everything after that kept missing the mark between the MMC and FMC.

Now the author did a great job with showing us the relationship building between Nash and Essex. Which is sometimes minimized in romances involving single parents. So that really raised the rating of this story for me. I adored the bond between Essex and Nash. But Essex and Nariyah’s relationship just happened. It was told to us, but we didn’t witness them fall for each other in the beginning. No flirting, banter, or anything. As a matter of fact, prior to the deed happening- she accused him of not liking her and said she didn’t like him.

It was almost a second thought of them acknowledging the other person was attractive. So for me every act after they became a couple didn’t hit the mark. Even though I liked them as an individual people and would’ve really enjoyed them together had we experienced them fall in love.

Rashawn and Nash were my favorites. Overall the story was interesting because despite needing a trigger warning. It was somehow a light urban read. Like yea it had violence, but the angst was minimal. The couple handled things pretty maturely. My only complaint is the lack of on page relationship development between the FMC and MMC.

Oh and I wouldn’t mind Elise and Rashawn becoming a thing.

The beginning had me in tears, so please read and trust the trigger warnings.

I liked the story and the characters, but I couldn’t really connect with the chemistry before the intimate scene at 60%. Still, Essex was that man. I’m glad Nariyah got to experience real love from her grumpy neighbor.

When you think about a thug per se, your mind doesn't exactly scream caring, gentle, or attentive. Essex was all those characteristics plus more when it came to Nariyah and Nash. Once Nash forced his way into Essex's life, they built a concrete bond that a boulder couldn't crack. Nash became the perfect undercover wing man and didn't have a clue he was one. Essex needed a breath of fresh air in his life. His will to live outside of his normal routine needed to be shaken a little. He was becoming monotone. Nariyah's life wasn’t a stroll through the park either. Her ex wanted to control everything, including her. I was cheering internally once she mustered up the courage to say it was over. Her ex-husband wanted a docile wife that had no ambition, but Nariyah was anything but docile.

This masterpiece is well written, slow burn type of love. You will fall in love. The MMC had to handle grief, rebuild, and fall in love that tells you what kind of men he was. He did it all with his sister beside him. She was his true womb mate. She looked out for him when he couldn't look out for himself. So all in all ladies and gents you want to get into this novel. Download or purchase your copy so you can meet Nash, Essex, Elise, Rashawn, and Nariyah.

Ooooh, Essex was mean, and I loved it. The beginning and even parts sprinkled throughout are kind of tough to get through since he’s dealing with a really traumatic event, but I really loved this story.

I loved Essex’s relationships across the board with his twin sister, Nash, and Nariyah. I loved Nariyah. I was rooting so hard for her happy ending because she and Nash deserved that peace.

There’s a lot of pain and trauma in this one, but Essex will have you giggling when you least expect it, and the healing journey for both him and Nariyah was just beautiful to watch.

We love a good father, no step necessary. The story was super cute but it started a little heavier than I expected.
Essex and Nariyah were good together and brought out the best in each other. I wish Essex was upfront earlier on about his wife and parents. I wanted to punch Myron for all the chaos he cause smh but baby when Essex confronted Myron at the family function I was cracking up! Served him right. 😩

This was such a good story. I liked the way we got a glimpse into both MC's previous life. It really helped underatand their character arc and showed so much of their development. I did not want this story to end, that's how much I came to love them. This was a great read and I highly recommend it.

I absolutely adored this story from start to finish! I was completely sat! Essex went through so much heartbreak to not only meet one but three people that healed his heart 🥹 Nariyah and Nash deserved someone like Essex! Nash needed that father figure and Nariyah deserved to be shown what it truly meant to be loved by a MAN 🤏🏾 Mr Make It Happen made it happen every time 🥰❤️

I hate that I kept putting off reading this story because it was so good. I hate what Essex had to go through but his growth was truly beautiful. He definitely was Mr. Make it Happen.

The author’s note & the first prologue had my chest tight and had me not knowing what to expect with this book. What I got was a masterpiece in navigating love after loss and taking control of your life & healing. It was so refreshing to see a MMC value therapy & therapeutic interventions without having to be coaxed or using it as a device in a 3rd act break up to get his woman back. Essex was a mean ol thing (but for good reason) but after fate brought him and Nariyah together in an unconventional way, we saw him soften…just for her and Nash though🤣He showed up for them with intention & steadfast consistency.

Nariyah was a strong FMC. She was independent and about building her business & taking care of her son. And I loved how Essex had to remind her TOO many times that he was “Mr Make it Happen” and she didn’t have to do it on her own anymore.

This really was a great love story, with a MMC that was mature & emotionally intelligent and a couple who communicated well. I enjoyed the found family aspects & the way people showed up for Essex while he was in his grief. There were a lot of flashbacks and some scenes that were just told to us that I wish we got to see play out. But overall, you wouldn’t be disappointed reading this.

Loved this Thug

If I am being real, Essex was more gentle than the so-called wealthy man. Nariyah and Nash were better off with Essex and Elise than fake Myron. Essex softness was what love should feel like in a relationship. The story was pretty awesome.

Tropes: Second Chance at Love, Proximity, Enemies to Lovers, Suspense, Reformed MC, Single Parent, Loss of a Loved One due to violence
I am exploring new authors and new genres. This book is the first book that I have read by Lakia. I was intrigued by the description of The Softest Love Came from a Thug and decided to dive in!
Essex Hunter suffered a traumatic loss when his wife, Victoria, was murdered, and he was almost railroaded for her death and the death of the perpetrators. During this ordeal, his religious parents turned their backs on him. He has walked away from the street life and is running his car restoration business, minding his business and continuing to seek justice for his wife. His neighbors give him and his dog a wide berth and he is taking life one step, one day at a time.
Nariyah Smith married her husband before she finished college. He comes from a family of lawyers and expects her to depend on his resources, while allowing HER dreams to wither. When she has had enough of his putdowns and sabotage she walks away with her young son. Her husband does not make her escape easy; he systemically tries to destroy her financial outlook while spending zero time with his child.
When Nariyah and her son move into Essex’s neighborhood, she minds her business and also gives him a wide berth. UNTIL, her rebellious ten-year old takes her car and plows into a car on Essex’s property. How will Nariyah find in her already strapped budget the money to pay for the damage? Will Essex find it in his shattered heart to step up and help this struggling mother or is his heart drained of all kindness?
Conclusion:
Ms. Lakia gives us an awesome story with plenty of chemistry and a sweet road to love. For all of his gruff demeanor and no-nonsense attitude, Essex had the capacity to love, both as a partner and as a parental figure. We observed his love for his twin sister, Elise, and his longtime friend, Rashawn; it was inspiring to see how he made a difference and became a true role model for Nash. Nariyah finally stood up for her interests when she made the hard choice to put herself first and left a bad marriage. Her meeting with Essex was more traumatic than cute but gradually she came to see the goodness beneath his street persona. Complications came from secrets not shared but I was glad that the misunderstanding was handled quickly. Final word, I enjoyed this story and loved the progression and family growth. I look forward to reading Elise and Rashawn’s story next. It will be interesting to see how her parents react to her dating Rashawn seeing how they disowned Essex when he was in trouble ☹.
Favorite Lines:

If anybody knew how to kick a bitch while she was down, it was Myron. Every chance he got to diminish my accomplishments, he was going to do it.

“Yeah, life is all about pivoting because life is always going to life,” pink dress added.

“We stan a queen with multiple talents,” blue sparkly dress snapped her fingers.

“Beat me over there,” I stated, and he looked at me, confused. “Run!” I shouted.

As much as I hated to admit it, Nash completely turned his behavior around since working with Essex at the shop.

Praying wasn’t even in my repertoire, but I needed big sandals to come through today.

Nariyah hugged me, and I broke.

This was such a cute easy read. I loved it. I was kinda iffy about reading it cause I cantttttttt do it with the dead spouse I just can’t. But this book did it for me.

It was cute, little drama. I was so nervous cause he didn’t tell her what happened to his wife and I was like omg this is gonna be the downfall of their relationship. And it wasn’t, I didn’t like how she immediately jumped to ending things which annoyed me. The lack of communication; like yes it was a horrible way to find out but it came from your ex husband. That would’ve been the first flag that hmm maybe this isn’t the whole story. But I love love love how they settled that shit in one chapter and didn’t drag it out.

I also love when they form their own separate relationship with the kid first, I always find that way more authentic. I loved me some Mr Make it Happen. Yes plz. I loved how even tho they were both left with trauma, they didn’t fight their feelings when it came down to it. They were guarded but not closed off. I loved the support system they each had. He had me screaming too. Like everything that came out of his mouth was so unhinged especially when Nash and him first met.

Only thing I didn’t agree with and I wish he got a little more closure on was his parents. Nothing that he did warrant their behavior. He had no part of having shitty parents.

This was def a 10/10 for me. I loved it

Mr Handle It Indeed!

The trigger warning warned me but I kept going anyway and while it was a very emotional start there was a turning point that made me want to keep going. Essex was dealt such a terrible hand, first with his trash AF parents and then with an unexpected and heartbreaking tragedy that turned him into someone else. With time and therapy he healed and stopped being so mean. Considering all that he had been through though, his growth was actually really beautiful to watch. His level of petty was also unmatched so there were plenty of LOL moments because of him and his shenanigans.

Then Nariyah was literally living with her biggest hater but thankfully she remembered who the F she was and after her life came crashing into Essex's, eventually her and "Mr Handle It" built something beautiful together. It wasn't without drama and challenges of course, but on page there was definitely more good than bad.

I enjoyed this read and I really liked that the epilouge showed us how Victoria's family received Nariyah and Nash. The only thing that I wish we as readers got to see more of thiugh was a friendship from the sparkly dress ladies that were actually a big part of the reason why Nariyah remembered her power. It would have been great for them to have been written in as a part of her growth story.

2nd Chance at Love 🙌🏾

Mr. Make It Happen!!! Essex has got to be one of my top MMCs of the year thus far. This book starts out with a major punch to the gut. We get to experience Essex losing his wife, and we see the hell our FMC, Nariyah, goes through with a prick of a husband. Both their pasts set up where we start off in current times. They are both still recovering from those life events and just getting by. Through a series of events, Nariyah’s young son, Nash, is the tether that brings them together. Though it is attraction at first sight for them, it takes a minute for Essex and Nariyah to actually like each other, but once they lock in, I love how Essex was all in with her and her son. Well from the jump Essex was pouring into Nash. I loved that he was doing it genuinely because he saw the guidance Nash needed and not just to make an impression her. Again, I say this all the time, but I enjoyed them so much and their story and journey to love each other together that I would love an update book on them. This book had a fair share of drama, spice, and, of course, funny moments.

Wow!!! What a book!!

This book was so real and I must admit that it had me totally caught up. Essex loses his wife to police brutally on her birthday. After experiencing this tragic loss, he is just surviving. He meets Nariyah and her son Nash when Nash crashes his mom’s car into Essex’ car parked in his yard. Essex goes off and makes Nash work in his custom car shop to work off the car repairs. His mom goes with him so she’s always around. Essex takes time with Nash when he realizes that he lacks male influence. Nariyah and Nash are slowly bringing Essex out of his holding pattern. They are making him feel alive again. Essex shows up for Nariyah like she’s never had before. Their love emerges from the ashes of life. Nariyah softens Essex and she and Nash give him purpose.

This was a phenomenal second chance romance.
Essex was such a good man and he still had a good heart after everything he’s been through. He was just the kind of man Nariyah needed and she was just what he needed. I absolutely loved this book.

Essex and Nariyah

Listen Essex went through a lot in the beginning with how he lost his wife Victoria. I could see why he was so guarded let alone “grumpy.” While Nash (Nariyah’s son) was becoming a little out of control, it was Essex who quickly got him together after stealing his mom’s car. Nariyah played no games either especially when it came to Nash or her business. Her ex Myron was definitely a piece of work but I respect that Nariyah still tried to make sure Nash could have some kind of relationship with Myron although Myron could care less. The connection that both Essex and Nariyah built was much needed for the both of them. Listen Essex didn’t play about either Nash or Nariyah. Oh and the love that Victoria’s parents still had for Essex was amazing as well being that Essex parents could care less about him. Great read from LaKia as always. Haven’t read something that I couldn’t put down.

Essex and Nariyah

This story was beautifully written and deeply emotional. Essex is a man grieving the loss of his wife to police brutality, carrying pain that shows up as rough edges and a sharp tongue, but beneath it all, he has the biggest heart and so much love to give. Nariyah is a single mother, newly divorced and starting over, and she’s the perfect balance of soft and strong. A true firecracker, she wasn’t letting anyone talk to her sideways.
What really stood out was the communication and honesty between the characters, along with the found family that slowly came together. The bonds that formed felt real and earned. Nash looking up to Essex was everything he wasn’t asking for much, just some male guidance and someone to show up for him. Watching them build not just a relationship, but an entire village, was beautiful to witness.

I love Essex. Such an amazing man. Nash was the glue that kept him and Riyah together. Elise, Essex’s twin, I loved her too. She was very overprotective of her brother, and I liked how she constantly checked on his well-being. I feel like Rashawn is eventually going to wear her down, maybe in a future book. 👀

Essex and Elise’s parents were a piece of work and honestly very unhealthy for Essex. And Myron… that trifling mf. He really tried his best to tear Riyah down because he was jealous. He knew if she didn’t need him, he would have no purpose in her life, and she still left. Jokes on him for thinking she would sink without him. She found a real man who lifted her up, supported her dreams, and actually invested in them. Then Myron showed just how much of an asshole he was by cutting his son off just because Riyah divorced him, yet still thinking he had a say when someone else stepped in. Myron’s whole family was a mess. Good read.

Second Chances @ Love & Healing Hearts 💕✨

This was my first time reading this author, and I’m so glad I did! 📚💖 Essex and Nariyah’s story was truly good.

After witnessing his wife’s murder and being arrested for her death—along with two officers—Essex’s world completely fell apart. To make matters worse, his parents shunned him. 💔 Nariyah and her son, Nash, helped him find happiness again and reminded him what it felt like to truly live. 🥹💙

In return, Essex helped Nariyah rediscover her confidence as a successful businesswoman and an excellent mother. 👩🏽‍💼🌟 They both had to heal from deep pain and heartbreak, but together they found love, strength, and restoration. ❤️‍🩹✨

I especially loved how Essex became such an amazing mentor and father figure to Nash. 👏🏽💙 A beautiful story about healing, growth, and second chances.

Ooo, this was sooo good! Essex, Nariyah, and Nash were the perfect family coming together. I loved how he stepped in for Nash after his the no good dead beat dad was a no show in his life. He put the fear of a God in that boy's life, so much so that he had Nash in tears, answering yes sir, and loving the show of love Essex gave him.

Now he and Nariyah had a tumultuous start with them both getting on each other's nerves. I enjoyed their stand off, until it was no more. They were good for each other, whereas it was a 2nd chance at love for each.

Essex was definitely the protector for both of them. He wasn't playing about his woman or Nash with her ex husband. Nariyah didn't play about her son, with neither her ex or Essex.
Essex was definitely a boss bae. Loved this from start to finish!

Essex and Nariyah

Essex was living the life, married, happy, and excited about the future. That is until any enemy from his past changes things. Now, he is a widower and angry at the world.

Nariyah is a divorced single mother doing the best she can. She finds herself asking if it is enough now that her son is acting out.

Her son's action put her in the path of Essex. They are a grunpy/ sunshine mixture. Essex finds himself fighting his attraction for her. One day, he decides that he doesn't want to deny his feelings.

They are now a couple navigating their baggage together.

I enjoyed this read and author's work.
