He doesn’t take just anyone. He takes women who won’t be missed.
At first, it’s easy to dismiss them. Runaways. Addicts. Women who slipped through the cracks. But FBI Special Agent Jane Cannon sees what others refuse to see—a pattern hiding in plain sight.
The women all look alike. They disappear quietly. And when one finally resurfaces, she’s been carefully preserved… like a secret meant to be found.
As Jane investigates in the shadows of official cases, she uncovers a methodical killer who doesn’t leave chaos behind—only questions. Why these women? Why now? And why does Jane keep finding herself at the center of the puzzle?
With resistance from above and time running out, Jane must decide how far she’s willing to go to stop a predator who plans his crimes like rituals—and may already have his next victim in sight.
Including her.
Dark. Tense. Unsettling. This is a story about obsession, justice, and what happens when a killer chooses his victims for a reason.

L.T. Ryan and K.T. Crowe’s Collateral made me realize there is something uniquely horrifying about a killer who operates quietly while the world keeps looking the other way. No flashy chaos. No theatrical violence. Just women disappearing one by one while society decides they probably weren’t important enough to search for too hard. And honestly? That reality sitting underneath this story unsettled me far more than the action ever could.
Published by Podium Audio, thank you so much to the publisher for the gifted ALC. This audiobook completely consumed my commute, my evenings, and frankly, most of my remaining emotional stability for a couple days.
Jane Cannon continues to be one of the strongest parts of this series for me because she doesn’t feel invincible or overly polished. She feels tired. Frustrated. Sharp around the edges in a way that makes sense for someone constantly carrying the weight of seeing what other people refuse to acknowledge. Watching Jane investigate these disappearances while fighting resistance from above created this constant tension where it felt like the system itself was almost as dangerous as the killer.
And the killer here? Absolutely chilling.
What makes this story work so well is how controlled everything feels. These crimes aren’t impulsive explosions of violence. They’re methodical. Planned. Ritualistic almost. The women all resemble one another. They vanish quietly. Then one victim resurfaces preserved so carefully that it feels less like a body being discovered and more like a message being delivered. The entire time I was listening, I kept thinking, “this man isn’t killing for chaos… he’s killing for meaning,” and somehow that made every scene feel heavier.
Jane’s determination to keep digging—even when people around her want easier answers—gave the story its emotional backbone. She’s relentless, but there’s also vulnerability underneath her stubbornness that keeps her grounded. You can feel the emotional exhaustion creeping in while she tries to stay focused on saving women most people have already forgotten.
“And when power protects the guilty, innocent lives become collateral.”
That line hit hard because this book is about more than catching a killer. It’s about who society chooses to value and who gets dismissed as background noise. Beneath all the suspense and FBI procedural elements is this deeply uncomfortable truth about vulnerable women slipping through cracks nobody is motivated to repair.
Hillary Huber’s narration elevated everything for me. She gives Jane this restrained intensity that perfectly captures someone trying to stay emotionally controlled while staring directly into humanity’s ugliest corners. Some narrators read thrillers. Huber makes you feel trapped inside them. Her pacing during the tense moments genuinely had me gripping my steering wheel like I was somehow personally involved in the investigation.
And because I’ve spent time in Seattle myself, I could vividly picture the city while listening—the damp streets, waterfront, gray skies, crowded neighborhoods, that constant moody atmosphere hanging over everything. The setting added so much to the audiobook experience because I could fully visualize Jane moving through the city while the case slowly spiraled darker and darker.
This was an easy 4.5⭐️ audiobook for me. Dark, tense, emotionally heavy, and impossible to casually listen to while multitasking because the story demands your full attention. If you love FBI thrillers with intelligent pacing, morally messy investigations, unsettling villains, layered female leads, and stories that leave you slightly paranoid afterward, Collateral absolutely deserves a spot on your TBR.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
“Some women disappear twice. Once when they’re taken… and again when nobody comes looking.”
Tell me I’m not alone here—what’s scarier in a thriller: the reckless killers who explode into chaos… or the calm, organized ones who plan everything perfectly?
Thank you to the publisher Podium Entertainment for the ALC.
This was my first L.T. Ryan/K.T. Crowe novel and it did not disappoint. This thriller delivered in all the ways I like. I enjoyed Jane Cannon as the main character. She felt very down to earth and relatable. I loved that in addition to her work as an FBI agent, we get a glimpse into her quirky family and how that has shaped her character. The mystery and our killer was also done really well. It wasn’t over dramatized. The authors created a realistic murder mystery vibe and it felt like I was listening to an SVU episode.
Hilary Huber’s narration was spot on with this one. Her voice helped create Jane’s character for me and kept me invested in the story.
If you are a fan of Karin Slaughter and FBI investigative mysteries, you should absolutely give this one a go!!
Jane Cannon is back in action. This was an edgy, dark suspense thriller mixed with police procedural. Jane is investigating bank robberies, murders whilst feeling the pressures of administration and the public. This was a gripping and excellent thriller, a tension filled, very engaging and quite entertaining. Highly recommend.
When you know of an author and have read all of his books, you know the newest one will be good. This didn't disappoint. Its an interesting, complex mystery that is revolved around an unconventional FBI agent. There is tension from the beginning to the end that will keep you guessing and hoping for more.
