Lovely story with original scenery.
Thank goodness at the end I’d understand there will be more.
Adorable charming characters with great chemistry. The story and especially a certain scene was excellently written, quite enjoyable!.
A shortie with a lot of story, just how I like them. Loved it all!

FYI just for fun...my review has a many words as the pages of this story

This short story focuses on Aaron, or Ace, and the mess his love life has become. He’s just been dumped by his boyfriend and he’s upset. He’s going to take the advice of his very loyal, oldest friends and “take a little time for yourself before you jump back in the pool.” Excellent advice. He realizes his taste in men is “…truly the worst selection of men ever.”

As the manager of a pharmacy, he is there when a disgruntled customer begins to berate the sweet fill-in pharmacist, Darren. Aaron steps in to help out. And so begins a sweet introduction of Ace and Darren (and Darren’s confusion about all the friend’s nicknames is so endearing.)

The one quibble I had with the story was the overuse of the friend’s names. Ace and Finn were repeated so often during their conversations sometimes I just shook my head. This is a minor thing but in a short story it’s much more obvious.

The game they play at the end is adorable (I guess sexy games maybe shouldn’t be considered adorable but this was!) It’s a long sex scene considering the length of the book but as it is tied to the game, I found it so interesting.

As my initial read of this author’s work, I was happy to discover someone I would read again.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Well that was certainly a tasty little treat. Opening Day is not your typical sports romance because neither of the leads are athletes. However, their opening day activities place this novelette squarely in the sports romance genre. Add to that a healthy dose of sexy man-on-man action, well I was enjoying a little bit of heaven as I read about Aaron and Darren’s meet cute and first date. Having been dumped yet again by another arrogant bad boy, Aaron decides that he needs to take a break from dating. But Darren’s arrival as the new floating pharmacist has Aaron second guessing his hasty decision. After an incident at work has Aaron coming to Darren’s rescue, his second guessing is gone and Aaron takes a well-presented opportunity to invite a new colleague out for a bite to eat. When the night goes well, they agree to a first date over opening day for their respective baseball teams, who just happen to be playing one another the following evening. What takes place during the baseball game is a highly erotic twist on the drinking games so many fans tend to enjoy, with the guys advancing from first base to second base and clothes being shed with well-timed strikes. As expected, the sensuality increases with each baseball play until it culminates in a seriously hot grand slam. I loved the chemistry between Aaron and Darren and can easily see myself rereading Opening Day when I’m looking for a quick read that combines a little bit of sweet with a whole lotta hot. I look forward to reading Evading Exodus to see what Ms. Woods has in store for the pair.

I was leaning towards 2-stars, but the baseball play-by-play while they were having sex was just odd... not to mention baseball terminology is not a language I'm fluent in.

Also, 10 pages of preview in a 60 page book seems a bit much to me.

Opening Day is short story about the start of a relationship between Darren and Ace, both of whom just got out of a relationship. The bulk of the story takes place during the Opening Day game between the Red Sox and the A’s and it is one long smokin’ hot yummy scene. This was a quick read, less than two hours, but there was enough character development outside of the yummy scene to keep me interested and wanting more. I generally like stories that have some focus on the typical first date emotions – awkwardness, nervous excitement, a bit of insecurity. I think the author did a good job with this, especially considering the brevity of the story.

I have a quick comment on the chapter titles. I thought they were great and clever up until the point they confused me.

Chapter 1: The Pregame Talk Show
Chapter 2: Introduction of the Players
Chapter 3: First Pitch
Chapter 4: Bottom of the First
Chapter 5: Top of the Second
Chapter 6: Bottom of the Second
Chapter 7: Top of the Third
Chapter 8: Bottom of the Fourth
Chapter 9: Top of the Sixth

There was a bit of a pattern, so when I came to Chapter 9, Top of the Sixth, I assumed I had messed up my spot in the book and I went looking for the Fifth inning. The Eighth inning doesn’t get a chapter either. Ultimately, this doesn’t have any effect of my enjoyment of the book. I just was left wondering why these innings were skipped.

The story does go into some baseball detail, but as I like baseball and understand it, I don’t think I’m a good person to judge whether it’s going to be a problem for non-baseball fans.

This was the first book I read by author Alexis Woods and I will definitely be looking for more from this author. I’ve already added book 2 of this series to my to-read list.

This book was given to me free by the author in exchange for an unbiased review.

Ace meets Darren when Darren fills in at as a Pharmacist in the store he manages. The 2 hit it off and go out for dinner and before you know it they are playing strip baseball.
A cute, short read. Most of the book resolves around the sex scene as the boys watch their baseball team on Opening Day.
The use of baseball terminology is clever although I am not sure how a reader without some knowledge of baseball would fare.
All in all an enjoyable read. I look forward to reading book 2 in the series.

Pharmacy manager, Aaron Lark (“Ace”) has decided to take a break from the dating scene for a bit since he just broke up with another boyfriend. His ego needs a rest. But when he met Darren Goldman who was temporarily filling in for Becky in the pharmacy, he almost had second thoughts. Both of them are attracted to each other and get along well. They have lunch at the nearby T.J.’s Ale House owned by Ace’s buddies Terry and Jake. They were offered soup to take with them which Darren brought by the next day for his and Ace’s lunch. Both of them still enjoying each other, they arranged to watch a ball game together at Ace’s since they were both strong fans. And this is where the reader should grab a copy and read all about the game they come up with to give baseball a very special meaning.

This was a nice story where friendships abound and the friends genuinely care about each other. Grab your copy and see what’s in the future for both of them!

If you like baseball... you're going to love this! Just when you thought you knew how to watch the game Darren and Ace give you a whole new appreciation for how the game is 'called!' Instant attraction turns to dinner dates and 'let's watch the game on your couch...' They watched the game and really enjoyed themselves. A fun read!

"Opening Day" by Alexis Woods is the first book in the Southern Jersey Shores series, and it appears that the second book, "Evading Exodus," will also feature the couple from this first book. Aaron, whose nickname is Ace, works as a pharmacy manager. His boyfriend recently dumped him, and his new mindset about dating is to try and take things slowly with a genuinely nice guy. His love life is jump-started when Darren covers a substitute shift as the pharmacist in Ace's store. The men are attracted to one another, and the physical attraction is reinforced by kind actions and supportive words during the course of a hectic day. Ace and Darren decide to trust in their mutual attraction and see where things go by dating each other.

The internal dialogue and feelings that the reader experiences through Ace's narration felt realistic. The secondary characters gave insight to Ace's life as well, especially as he navigates the protective and well-meaning conversations of his best friends. This book was fairly brief, and the shorter length of the story meant that I sometimes found myself wondering about what other personality details or character traits Ace and Darren might share, or how the next few days after their dates would have gone. I'm glad to know that there is another book about the couple, since that solidifies the ending's optimistic feel for Ace and Darren's new relationship. "Opening Day" had a good flow to the story, and the men bonded in charming and humorous ways. I enjoyed reading about Ace and Darren, and they put a very fun spin on watching baseball together at home.

I look forward to reading more by Alexis Woods. I recommend "Opening Day."

3.5 stars...First I've read from this author.

Great cover on this short story.
Aaron and Darren...Good thing they call Aaron Ace eh? :)
I liked these two. Ace is fresh out a relationship with another in a long string of 'bad boys' and looking to take a little time for himself before jumping back into things. This plan does not last very long. He meets Darren the very next day at work and BAM there he goes again. Darren is a whole different kettle of fish than Ace's usual, but that's just what Ace needs. Since the story is told from Aaron's point of view Darren feels a little less fully formed and a little younger than he should be.
The story could definitely been longer (I always say that), but there wasn't really much missing. There were some great side characters. I like how close Ace was to his long time friends.
The sex scenes are done very well and are definitely hawt! That baseball game, whew! Some hints of a possible D/s aspect to the relationship but it is only vaguely hinted at. This is only the very beginnings of their life together but their story continues on in the next book. I will be looking for more from this author in the future.

**I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.**

Aaron "Ace" has had no luck in the romance department, he's looking for mister right but finding a whole bunch of mister wrongs. He figures he'll take a break in the men department until he meets Darren. He's cute, sexy and just Aaron's type.

The story was about the Aaron and Darren and revolved around a baseball game. It wasn't at all what I was expecting for a sports story, especially when neither of the MC's are athletes. The chapter titles were all named after baseball innings and there was a ball game at the end of the book. It seemed like two stories somehow merged into one. Not a bad read at all just okay. The ending seemed a bit abrupt though. I would have liked to see how they got from point A to point B more.

I absolutely loved this story! It was very short and was a small snapshot in time where Ace and Darren meet and start to connect. Despite it being short, I didn't feel that the story was lacking anything. I got to know the personalities of Ace, Darren, and their friends. I felt their attraction and friendship grow.

I loved the use of the sub-chapter titles. The use of baseball throughout the book was fun and I liked how the book was laid out in relation to a baseball game. Very clever and fun.

I would have liked it to be longer and see if the relationship lasts beyond the few days this book spans, but Alexis did expand their story in other shorts (the newest is book 2 Evading Exodus), and that made me very happy. This book was meant to be the story of them meeting. Next comes the growing relationship and I can't wait to read it.

This is my first time reading Alexis Woods. When I read the synopsis, I chose to read this because I was looking for something short, and a naughty fix so to speak, and it delivered!!

Aaron, is a manager of a pharmacy and dealing with the disappointment of a break up. The author doesn't drag out his heartbreak though.

Darren, is filling in for a pharmacist at Aaron's pharmacy. A sweet sexy addition to Aaron's life.

When Aaron and Darren meet for the first time, you can feel the attraction through the pages. I loved that the author included chapter headings that refer to baseball!! The author definitely has a way with naughty words and this was a fun, sexy, quick read.

I guess I'll be the minority here to say the story didn't work for me.

Getting dumped the night before to meeting Darren for the first time the next morning then had dinner together after work didn't struck me as stepping back from dating scenes at all.

There was also too much baseball lingo that I don't get. It amazed me that Aaron and Darren could had sex while paying attention to the game on the telly... Was that really doable? I'm not so sure.

Other aspects aside from that (referred to baseball/sex game) didn't really grab me. What can I say, this is not what I expected from the blurb.

The story starts with Ace and his boyfriend breaking up with him. He has two amazing friends called Jake and Finn and they really care about Ace and they’re sad for him and his bad luck with love.
When one day he meets Darren, who starts working with Ace at the pharmacy, and they seem to like each other. The story is on Ace’s POV and there is a lot of baseball involved. I don’t know much about baseball because we don’t usually play it where I come from but, I laughed a lot reading the sex scene with baseball’s terminology.
Love is in the air and I can’t wait for book two.

I'm a sucker for a story about everyday characters with everyday jobs, so this story was right up my alley.

There isn't much to this story. They meet, date and have a very creative steamy scene. Easy enjoyable reading.

Aaron’s boyfriend just broke up with him and he has decided to take a break from dating since he seems to keep picking the wrong guys. The next day Darren is called to fill in for the pharmacist at his store and he is instantly attracted to him. Aaron and Darren get together for dinner that night to get to know each other. They end up spending the next evening together also, with explosive results. This was a very enjoyable short story.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review through the GR Don't Buy Me Love program.

This was a hot and sweet little short. Ace is a manager at a pharmacy who has just broken up with his boyfriend when Darren comes in to fill-in for another pharmacist. They hit it off right away and the story is mostly about their date for Opening Day of the Red Sox. The story is full of baseball terminology, but that doesn't detract from the story, it actually gives it a little more humor. I really enjoyed this story and will be reading the second one when it comes out!

Opening Day has been edited, slightly altered, and recovered, but the overall story remains the same.

All the books within the Southern Jersey Shores series are short stories with HFN endings with the potential for more. There's attraction and acting on that attraction. Each story takes place over only a few days time.

Each book also revolves around a theme:
Book 1 - Opening Day - baseball
Book 2 - Evading Exodus - Passover
Book 3 - Ultimate Summer - Ultimate Frisbee
Book 4 - Spin Play - games
Book 5 - Cue the Music - music
Book 6 - Say You Will - surprises

Opening Day was a quick, easy read in the MM romance genre about two baseball lovers making the most out of the first game of the season. Fun and orgasms were had by all. LOL!

Short stories in general are a hard sell for me because of their very nature...they're short. When telling a story about two people who don't know each other, that means the storyline has to move very quickly and sometimes things are rushed, which is the case for Opening Day. I would have preferred things to move at a little slower pace, but then it wouldn't be a short story.

Regardless of the rush, there's still a lot of fun to be had in this tale of two sexy men connecting over a love of the game. *wink wink* The writing is solid and the characters are interesting and have a lot more to share...in the next story, coming soon.

Could Have Been Better

I was anxious to read this story as I am a native of the South Jersey Shore and wanted to see how the region was incorporated into the story. Alas, there was nothing recognizable in the story. I couldn't even guess where it takes place. Apart from the name of the series, it could have taken place anywhere. South Jersey is Phillies country, not Red Sox. Also, other than the title and the chapter headers, this is not a sports romance. My other issue was that the dialogue ranged on a scale from boring to cheesy and back again. Overall, I was very disappointed by the story.

Who knew baseball could be so...entertaining?!? Ace & Darren, local bar & friends, and baseball-perfect recipe for the cutest story ever. I enjoyed this first book and look forward to the rest of their story.

Warning: this short story introduces you to Darren, Aaron “Ace”, and their merry band of friends. It details their initial meeting up to their eventual hookup. The author does give you a sneak peek at the next book which thankfully will be out soon.

I loved this short story so much!! Both MCs were adorable and their interactions were great. It was insta-lust, but it didn't feel forced, They just hit it off from the start and it was so nice to read.

Their first time was sooooo HOT! I absolutely loved the game they played. Moving on to the next story.

note: although book 2 in this series will continue Ace & Darren's story, this book does not end in a cliffhanger. It has a satisfactory end on its own.
