Rate this book
A new series set in the world of LOST FANTASY! Aaron Hillburg was just another rich-kid failson—ghosting his responsibilities, hopping rooftops, and hating his billionaire father in peace… until a mysterious floating dragon egg bonds to him and ignites a hidden lineage of ancient magic inside his body. Now every violent outlaw wizard, biker cultist, and supernatural warlord between New York City and The World Beneath is hunting him—and they’ll burn the world down to pry the egg from his corpse. Again, I confuse this title/universe with another one from Image. This time it's the "massiveverse" which I also thought has a fire powered character of similar appearance. Turns out this is spinning out of the "lost fantasy" series whose #8 intrigued me a lot last month. This series really doesn't demand any knowledge of the parent title and actually helped me understand the world of "lost fantasy" a little more - particularly as this is set in the "real" world not some fantasy one.
The tone of the book feels a little more "the darkness" than "Spider-Man"/"invincible" but it does focus on a late teen/young adult as the protagonist. He feels more in the younger side with his attitude and living with his Mum but talks as if he's in his twenties. The character hasn't won me over yet but he hasn't put me off.

I'm not so sure about the swearing, not because I'm prudish but because everything else feels like it could be a Marvel/DC book at this stage in terms of content so the swearing feels slightly out of place and potentially audience limiting. It could be that future issues require the mature label but from this issue it would work just as well without.

The art was the real selling point for me. It has the feel of Marvel's Pepe Larraz "house-style" with a hint of Chris Bachalo before he went hyper stylised (the colouring reminds me of Bachalo too but I confess I've forgot the colorist from that era). There are some really nice touches to the art throughout the issue, such as the way magic is used to conjure up weapons/vehicles. I also really liked the way they conveyed running which involved one large panel with multiple copies of a character within that panel accompanied by what looked like glass panels behind the running character. It gave the impression they were stepping through portals and was an excellent way of conveying time passing. In addition they used the same technique later in the issue where the running was not occurring in the traditional left to right reading movement but the fact the mini panels were behind the running character made it instinctive to follow. Impressive storytelling from an art point. Another page I enjoyed was where the panels were the plan of the apartment and again used in such way where time flowers in a logical way.
The Fireborn design is neat but not overly distinctive (hence my confusion with another Image character) but it does look like dragon armour so fits the bill.

Overall impression = 4/5
Writing = 3/5
Art = 5/5

Will I read the next issue? Yes

Wait for the trade collection? There was an impressive page number and amount of material in this initial issue, so I'd probably go for monthly issues at this stage.

Did I need to read previous issues/series? 1st issue. Despite being part of "lost fantasy" I didn't feel left out or confused beyond recognising some characters. It made more sense than the issue of "lost fantasy" I read.

will I read earlier issues? There isn't one but I'm more inclined to read "lost fantasy" from issue 1.

Great first issue of Fireborn.
I enjoyed the artwork and storyline.
Still many questions surround the
main character.
